Chapter 4 - Oliver

I watched the clock tick towards 5:30.

I was in my tiny apartment, waiting for the moment I could call her.

I don't know what it was about Lily that made me want to wait. But every time I closed my eyes, I saw her smile engrained in my memory and heard her laugh echoing in my ears. She was so different to everyone else. The last girl I dated, her name was Arleigh, and it was always constant drama with her. It didn't last that long, because we used to argue, and then suddenly she wanted to move in with me, but we had been dating for a month and she had never even been to my place more than twice. It was the craziest relationship I think I've ever been in, and after that, I just concentrated on auditioning for Unforgettable Memories and playing my music. It wasn't that I didn't want to date, I really did, I just never put in enough effort to do so.

Lily was a joker like me. She still had a little bit of a child in her, and that child had no intention of growing up. And it only accentuated her personality. It wasn't innocence, and it wasn't a wild side, it was like she well and truly accepted herself for herself.

Maybe I was reaching. I only had one conversation with her, after all. But maybe she was exactly how I remembered her. Maybe. And I really wanted her to be how I remembered her.

She didn't seem to recognize me from when they were holding auditions for Unforgettable Memories and they publicized the whole thing. That's good, it meant that she could meet Ollie, before Oliver Brighton.

The digital clock that I had been staring at finally hit 5:30 and I eagerly picked up my phone. As my finger hovered over her contact, I realized that if I immediately called her, she would find me too eager, and that wasn't the greatest impression you could make on a girl you're hoping to date.

I waited patiently for what seemed like forever, before just pressing call. I looked up to realize I had only waited a minute and laughed lightly to myself. I guess I wasn't as patient as I thought.

It took her a minute, a very long minute, to pick up.

"Sorry! Sorry, how long were you calling for? I kept my phone on silent for my final exams and just turned it back on!" Her frantic voice filtered through my phone's speaker and I laughed.

"Not long, just a minute or so. So, are you still free tonight?" I asked, nervously. What if she had forgotten about me and had made other plans? It was Friday night.

"Of course, yeah, I'm actually just entering my dorm right now, let me get changed and I can meet you somewhere?"

Think, Oliver, think, what's a good date place? "Um, yeah. I didn't really have a plan when I called you, I was kinda worried you would've forgotten and made plans." Honesty is the best policy? OK, fine, it was a really dumb thing to say. I should've stalled while I thought of something.

I held my breath until I heard her laugh echo through the speaker. "Have you met you? How would I forget you? And it doesn't matter, we can just walk around until we find a place. Do you want to tell me your address and I can meet you there, or vice versa, or we can go to a mutually agreed upon place?"

"OK, um, where are you living?" I asked, trying to work out how far she was and whether it would be better to go to her, or meet her somewhere.

"UBC dorms."

Perfect. "I live pretty much next door, I can meet you in front of your building?"

"Sure, I'll be ready in 10 minutes, I can meet you anytime after that. I'm in building 4."

"15 minutes then?" I asked, already ready to go.

"OK, see you then!" She sounded excited, or at least I hoped she did. I certainly was.
