3 | Boys and Their Tourney
I walk into the library, and into the room with desks, and groan.
There goes my quiet study hour.
FG grins at me, as I take a seat, and pull my laptop out. I begin working on my assignments, but can't help but overhear their lesson.
"If someone hands you a crying baby, do you, A, curse it? B, lock it in a tower? C, give it a bottle? Or D, carve out its heart?" FG asks the four, Blue's hand going up. "Evie." So THAT'S her name.
"What was the second one?" She asks, sending FG into a frown.
"Oh, okay. Anyone else?" She looks at Purple, who seems content with drawing whatever she's drawing. "Mal?" Another name learned. Yay! She lazily looks up at FG.
"C, give it a bottle." She responds, looking down at her drawing.
"Correct. Again." FG grins.
"You are on fire, girl!" Carlos comments, looking at her. By this time, I give up on doing the assignments, but I look like I'm doing them.
"Just pick the one that doesn't sound like any fun." Mal comments, twirling her hair.
"Oh." They all say, understanding.
"That makes so much sense." Evie grins.
"Oh..." Mal mocks her friends, going back to her drawing. At this point in time, Jane decides to enter, squealing as she goes by the new kids.
"Oh. Hello, dear one." FG smiles at her daughter.
"Hi. You need to sign off on early
dismissal for the coronation." Jane hurriedly tells her mother, handing her a clipboard, looking at the kids. I see Mal nudge Evie's elbow, suspicious ringing out loud and clear.
"Everyone here remembers my daughter, Jane?" FG signs whatever document Jane handed her, the smile still on her face.
"Mom, no!" Jane whines, looking embarrassed.
"It's okay." FG reassures her daughter, giving back the clipboard.
"Jane, this is everyone." She turns her daughter around, and kind of pushes her towards them.
"Hi." The kids don't respond. "That's okay, don't mind me. As you were." She leaves, squealing again as she does.
"Ahem. Let's continue." FG goes to her blackboard, excited. "You find a vial of poison. Do you, A, put it in the king's wine? B, paint it on an apple?" Mal and Evie giggle at this, because coincidentally, Evie's Mother, did that to Snow White. And boy is Snow White scared of apples now. "Or C, turn it over to the proper authorities?" Jay uses his brute strength to force Carlos' hand down, raising his other.
"Oh! Ooh... get off." Carlos attempts to raise his other hand, but Jay forces that one down too.
"Jay." FG calls, pointing at him.
"C. You turn it over to the proper authorities." He answers, letting go of Carlos.
"I was gonna say that." Carlos pouts.
"But I said it first. Come here!" Jay pulls Carlos on the table, messing with him.
"Ow!" Carlos shouts, trying to get away.
"Come on, who said it first? Who said it first?" Jay mocks, still not letting him go.
"Ow! Stop!" Carlos shouts again.
"Ah! Boys. Boys!" I use my magic to seperate them, without making it look like it. "I am gonna encourage you to use that energy on the tourney field." FG suggests, pointing outside with her ridiculously long stick.
"Oh, no. That's okay. Whatever that is, we'll... We'll pass." Carlos smiles, amd the bell rings, making the boys go out to the tourney field anyway. Since my free period is right now, I follow, sitting on the bleachers.
"Jay, Ben, offense." I hear Coach yell, rolling my eyes as I do my assignments. "Chad, you're defense. Taylor, you're the shooter." He assigns, and I look up. Jay stares at me, making me take a deep breath. "Hey. Hey! Hey, you. Lost boy! Put your helmet on. Get out of the kill zone! Come on." Coach yells at Carlos, who looks so confused. "Pick it up. Put it on! Two hands." Coach yells before blowing the whistle. I watch as they run the play, and feel horrible for those who get into Jay's way. I laugh as Jay does a happy dance in the goal, and he stares at me when he gets done.
"You! Get over here!" Coach yells at Jay, and I proceed to get off the bleachers. "What do you call that? I call that raw talent. Come find me later. I'll show you something you haven't seen before. It's called a rule book. Welcome to the team, son." Jay looks triumphant. Then he turns to Carlos. "You ever thought about band?" Jay laughs, and Carlos looks defeated.
"I'll work with him, coach." Ben offers.
"All right." Coach sounds drained, for whatever reason. "Let's run that again." And the boys go nuts. Sort of. I get down from the bleachers, and go inside, meeting Chad, Audrey, and Ben outside.
"Hey guys.." I smile, but it fails.
"Those kids are trouble." Chad says under his breath, ignoring me.
"Bye, Mal." Evie waves.
"Bye." Mal responds.
"Come on, Chad." I sigh, fed up with this thinking.
"Give them a chance." Ben fights.
"Oh." Audrey grabs Ben's hands, and from then, I just want to slap her. "No offense, Bennybear, but you're just too trusting." Yep. The Queen Bitch has arrived everyone! "Look, I know your mom fell in love with a big nasty beast who turned out to be a prince. But with my mom, the evil fairy was just the evil fairy." She nudges towards Mal. "That girl's mother." I sigh.
"I think you're wrong about them." Ben fights again, with me nodding. "I'll see you later." Audrey sighs, puts her glasses over her face, and sashays away, with Chad looking at his friend, then leaving too.
"Go talk to her." I nudge my 'brother.'
"You think so?" He glances at me.
"Ben." I give him the look. "Sooner or later, you're going to break the ice. Go, man!" I kind of push him towards her, and walk away myself, running into Jay.
"Hey..." He smiles.
"Hi." I force a smile, and try to get away. It's one thing helping Ben with Mal, but it's another fighting my own battle with Jay. He shoves his list into my very full hands.
"You have my next class right?" I nod.
"Seems like it." I fake another smile, and start walking that way.
"So, what is it...." He asks, and I look again.
"Basically you're in the library getting whatever homework your earlier classes have given you. Lucky for you, its last period. So all your homework could be completed." He gives me a smile.
"And if I need help?" I shrug.
"I guess I can help you." I smile, and turn the corner into the library.
