eighteen
Cuddling could be so addictive. Wafa never thought she'd get to experience it though. A warm smile crept up her cheeks as she lay on their bed lazily, spooned into Shahzaib's arms. He held her waist like his life depended on it. She could feel his breath on her neck.
She didn't even open her eyes completely and her day already seemed better. Cuddling was their new normal and she loved everything about it. Her heart rate spiked as she turned around and nestled into Shahzaib's chest, hiding her face in his warmth. He grunted in his sleep whilst wrapping his arms around her backside comfortably again, pulling her more into him.
Heat raised onto her cheeks. It was like, Shahzaib couldn't stay away from her even for a second. Her life has taken such a drastic change in the last three days. She could never get used to his open declaration of affection. He has been more vocal about his like for her, after that night. As if he didn't have anything to fear and just started being more open.
It was the way he looks at her, looks at her with all his heart that makes her absolutely lose it. Wafa never knew he was so into her. But he was. And it was the best thing in the whole world.
Her eyes flew open as she realized what day was today. Her smile was replaced with panic as she arched her neck to look at the wall clock and heaved a sigh of relief, there was still plenty of time, "stop moving." She heard Shahzaib's deep morning voice as he held her firmly. Her toes curled subconsciously as she moved her gaze to his face. He hasn't opened his eyes yet but Wafa could tell he was awake. A soft smile appeared on her cheeks instantly.
Gosh! He was so handsome and all hers. His jawline looked so perfect and those eyelashes were to die for. Wafa didn't realize but she was shamelessly gawking at him.
"Are you awake?" She questioned him randomly, Shahzaib just hummed in response, "aren't you getting late for office or something?" She chuckled this time, he lazily opened his eyes and gazed at her, "Let's stay like this for a few minutes."
Her heart quivered at his words, "I'm getting late for my field trip, Shahzaib." She whispered with a mischievous smile and giggled as he groaned whilst tightening his hold on her, "it's already tomorrow?"
Shahzaib has openly admitted his dislike of her trip. But Wafa has anticipated this trip so much throughout her college years. Maybe not so much at the moment as she thought about its consequences. She wouldn't get to wake up next to him like this and she was already missing him, her heart fell just at the thought of it. Wafa moved closer to him, nuzzling into his neck, "you know I had to leave,"
"How about you cancel it? I'll take you on a private trip. It will be more interesting than your boring college," Shahzaib stared at her with all seriousness, she couldn't believe he was the same man who didn't want to stay married to her forever. Wafa smiled softly at him.
Three days ago, things were so different.
She didn't even know if they would last another day together and here they are. More close than ever. Fighting all their insecurities to being together.
"You know I can't do that," She replied helplessly while they detangled from each other and sat up straight, looking at each other's faces.
"Of course, I was not being serious," He shrugged while throwing off the blanket.
He was totally serious. Wafa hid a smile as she too got up from the bed, stretched her hands, fought off a yawn, and tied her hair in a messy bun. She could feel Shahzaib's intense gaze upon her and was taken off guard as he engulfed her in a bone-crushing hug, "I'll miss you,"
"I know."
Ironically, she was already missing him. She looks up at him with a small smile, "so, who will bath first today?" She asked to distract his mind and it seemed to work somehow.
They fight about the bathroom every single morning though. Wafa was someone who loved showering for half an hour or something like that and Shahzaib always had something to say about it when in reality even he uses just as much time in the bathroom.
So they always end up getting late for their work and college when they could have simply used the common bathroom or the guestrooms.
"You go first, I have something else to take care of," Shahzaib grumbled whilst walking out of the bedroom, Wafa smiled as she watched his retreating figure and rushed to get bathed.
She got ready in a plain white Kurti and tied her hair in a French braid. Shahzaib was not in their room for a while now, Wafa wondered what he was up to whilst taking a final glance at herself. She smiled before walking out of the room only to be surprised.
"What is this?" She beamed widely at her husband, who looked proud of himself as he pulled out a chair for her at the dining table. She chuckled softly before taking her seat. Her eyes went wide as she gazed at the breakfast. It was her favorite pasta.
"You made breakfast for me," Wafa stated the obvious while Shahzaib took a seat beside her and he began to fill her plate. She stared at him in awe.
"If you look at me like that, I won't be able to let you go," Shahzaib muttered huskily making her cheeks burn.
"I can't help it if you do things like this," Wafa whispered before looking down at her plate, "these look yum, Shahzaib."
"And tastes just as good"
"Of course, Mr arrogant." Wafa nudged him in the arms playfully before taking a spoonful of pasta and her eyes instantly closed as she savored the taste.
"Mmm," She moaned in delight before smiling at him, her breath hitched as he was already gazing at her.
"Thank you," She stuttered shyly before eating her food in silence, he just continued to stare at her, "my pleasure." He smiled in response.
"Stop looking at me like that," Wafa whined while he just chuckled, "my wife, my wish. I can stare all I want,"
Heat raised onto her cheeks instantly, she gave him a bashful look before eating her food in silence. Wafa couldn't get enough of hearing him say, wife. It warms her heart completely after all that she went through. The fear of them separating one day was still very fresh. But she was beginning to let it go slowly and his subtle acknowledgment was only making it easier. To believe that it was all real.
The next few minutes went by in a blur as Wafa rechecked her things and sighed as everything was ready. An unknown sadness surged through her as she brought everything to the living room. Shahzaib looked equally sad.
"I'll be back after a week, It's not like I'm going for" Her words died deep down as he placed his hands against her mouth and glared at her, "you'll come back after a week." She smiled with a shake of her head.
"And you'll take care of yourself," He added sternly, she nodded, "and you'll call me every night."
She nodded again. Her smile widened now, "you'll also stay out of trouble."
"Anything else?" Wafa removed his hands from her mouth and questioned him teasingly, "yes, come back soon."
Her heart melted like a puddle as she threw her arms around him and engulfed him in a bone-crushing hug, "I'll be back soon, take care of yourself too."
She loved their hugs. It's always full of emotions.
"I'll try,"
"And here, wear this." Shahzaib broke the hug as he took out something from his pocket, Wafa raised her brows at him as he held a cute little pendant in his hands.
"This is so cute," She gushed excitedly while he turned her around and moved her hair to the front, and made her wear it by himself, shivers ran down her spine as he did that, "I wanted to give this to you last week itself but then Humera messed up everything."
"Stop blaming it on her," Wafa made a face at him but smiled as she eyed the pendant again. It had the infinity symbol craved with little white stones.
"This looks expensive," She whispered in a low voice, "stop looking at the prices." He rolled his eyes.
"Look at the emotions behind it. I want an infinity with you, Wafa."
Wafa smiled despite herself. The pendant became a hundred times more precious after that.
From wanting her as just a temporary wife to this. They have indeed come a long way.
"I want an infinity with you as well, Shahzaib." She tiptoed on her legs and placed a long kiss on his cheeks. Time seemed to freeze for the both of them as she lingered in the kiss, with her eyes closed before pulling away abruptly. His stubble gave her a weird sensation to the whole cheek kiss thing.
Her heart rate spiked intensely as she turned away from him, feeling bashful. She had no idea what came over her to that. But there goes their first kiss. A precious memory that they both will cherish for the rest of their lives.
"I like this return gift so much better," Shahzaib grinned cheekily as he touched where she has kissed. She couldn't meet him in the eyes but Wafa knew from her heart that it was one of the best moments of their married life.
Feeling shy, she wanted to move out of his gaze but he caught hold of her hands as if reading her mind. She gazed at him questioningly, cheeks turning brighter than ever.
"Just returning the favor." He muttered amusedly whilst leaning in towards her face. Her eyes widened slightly as his lips came in contact with her cheeks.
Did he just kiss her?
Wafa couldn't breathe. It was just a cheek kiss. But it felt so much more intimate, with the way he lingered, savoring the moment. She turned bright red as he pulled away before placing another long kiss. She was a mess. Shahzaib freaking Hussain always had this effect on her.
He gazed down at her, finally as he stopped kissing her, she could feel his eyes screaming how much he desired her and it did something to her heart.
"I'm getting late," She muttered nervously before walking out of their main door.
He just shook his head in amusement whilst carrying her suitcase for her.
The first few seconds inside the car were awkward. Shahzaib played some random music as he rolled down the windows.
She could still feel his lips against her skin. She closed her eyes before composing herself. A small smile played on her lips.
The ride to college seemed so quick and with every passing moment, Wafa's heart was pounding in despair. They'd just gotten close, taking this huge leap of faith and this week's gap suddenly felt a little too much.
The past three days were a roller coaster in itself as she made herself believe that her marriage was real. They have taken baby steps from that day on. And that's why today's incident came out as a surprise. But then again, she initiated the kiss anyway and he just returned it. She kind of liked it a little too much.
She glanced at him sideways, memorizing his features. She's already missing him if that even made sense.
Oh, she was a goner alright.
"If you continue to look at me like that, then I'll seriously reverse the car and take you home with me," He groaned in slight frustration.
Home!
A warm feeling erupted inside her heart just at the thought of it.
She remembered feeling so sad at the thought of it not being hers but it always was hers.
"I'll miss home too," She mumbled half-heartedly whilst enjoying the natural air pass through the window. Shahzaib has always been considerate of her motion sickness. It could be one of the many reasons why how he'd broken the huge walls that she has built within herself.
"Home will miss you more, trust me. I'm going to have a hard time keeping up with everything," He chuckled sadly.
They'd divide chores among themselves, working together as a team. But now that she's going away for a week, all of it was Shahzaib's responsibility. She didn't think he'd be able to cope with so much.
"You can always call me if you can't find anything," She smiled encouragingly but it didn't quite reach her eyes.
"I'm thinking I'll just go and crash at Rayyan's apartment. It's been a while since we have spent time together."
Wafa didn't comment on that. She was still very apprehensive about Rayyan Khan. She could sense how unhappy and disinterested he was in his marriage with Humera, even from miles away.
"We are here!"
Shahzaib didn't look too happy about reaching college either. She heaved a sigh whilst gripping tightly on the seatbelt, not wanting to remove it.
"Let me," he leaned in to remove it for her. His cologne invaded her nostrils, making her feel goosebumps all over her hands.
She waited for him to move, but Shahzaib took his sweet time while his gaze was fixed on her throughout. Their breath mixed, faces inches away from each other. Wafa bit her lower lips in nervousness. He had finally unbuckled her.
Wafa did not know why she was disappointed when he moved away as soon as the belt was removed. She sucked in a deep breath and made up her mind to finally open the door. But a gasp escaped her lips as she felt herself being lifted in the air and now she was on his lap. It was kind of uncomfortable at first but she gazed at him in surprise.
He wrapped his arm around her waist as she adjusted comfortably while the windows were automatically closed. His hand now goes to cup her cheeks.
Heat rushed on her face as she gave him a questioning look in return, "what happened to you?"
Her heart began to take frantic beats as he tenderly caressed her cheeks, his eyes gazing at her with so much fondness that it made her all mushy and giddy. She waited for his next move, but he just gazed at her. There was a moment of silence as they just continued staring at each other.
"I'll miss you," His voice was almost a whisper. She gave him a sad smile in return.
"I think it's time for you to go," He muttered dejectedly and her heart fell in disappointment. Why did she think he was going to do anything more? She nodded sharply and was about to move out of his lap but he at once leaned in and claimed her lips, taking both of them by surprise.
Her eyes closed automatically as she absorbed the feel of his lips against hers. He didn't move for a second so she decided to be brave and kiss him back. Her hands go to wrap around his neck. He groaned before kissing her ever so softly. It was slow and tender. He kissed her like they had all the time in the world. Wafa couldn't describe what she felt at this moment.
She has been waiting for this moment since what like forever and this was worth all the wait.
He tasted like mint and gosh, he knew what he was doing. There was fireworks everywhere.
Her breath hitched as he pulled away for a few seconds, his forehead resting against hers. But he was kissing her again and she just followed his lead, kissing him back with so much yearning and desire. Her heart felt like it was about to explode with ecstasy.
They broke apart, gasping for air, panting softly. She finally opened her eyes and was met with his intense gaze, blood rushed to her cheeks. He looked at her like she was the most precious thing in the world.
Wafa couldn't get enough of him it seemed as she cupped his face and pulled him in for another kiss. He groaned into her mouth. This was nothing like the previous one. It was filled with eagerness and passion, a strong desire that she didn't know existed before.
Her phone rang, startling them both. She had to pull away abruptly. She looked down bashfully while searching for her phone. He got hold of it first and then scowled a little.
"Your friend," He rasped. Wafa knew she had to leave in a few minutes. She couldn't get herself to move though. He pulled her close to him, hugging her tenderly, "take care of yourself for me." She felt his soft kiss on her head.
It was going to be a tough week ahead for sure though.
