Chapter 50

The car journey was quick and swift. No one spoke the whole time. Mendez drove with Caleb in the front seat as the waiter and I sat in the back, his gun still pressing against my forehead telling me that a single word out of me would have ended with me a lifeless pile of cells.
Ten minutes of driving brought us to what looked like an abandoned warehouse but I knew that was a front.
"What's all this protection you were talking about, huh? I could call for backup right now if I wanted, couldn't I and you would be able to do absolutely nothing about it." The waiter looked almost proud of his revelation, smiling like he had just outsmarted the smartest guy out there.
He was wrong about having outsmarted Mendez but he wasn't wrong about Mendez being smart.
A laugh was building in my throat, one that could possibly kill me but how stupid could a man get?
I didn't know what the plan was but I knew Mendez had one. If he didn't I was going to really start questioning his leadership skills. He'd definitely be a bit of a bad gang leader if he couldn't even get us out of this situation.
"Caleb, can you turn on the air-con, it's getting a bit hot in here." I requested, not feeling the threat from the gun at all.
My calmness must have made the waiter wary because he jabbed the gun into my forehead a little harder, giving me a look that said shut the hell up. Caleb also gave me a warning look before turning on the AC, the cool blast of refreshing air relaxing me as I felt less and less clammy.
This dress really was a bit over the top.
"Why does she need the air-con, we're all getting out." the waiter said, reaching over for the door handle.
The warehouse was a good 100m away and I was starting to get impatient, really wanting to know how this was going to play out. The walk up to the door was painstakingly slow but it was worth it when Mendez authenticated himself on the fingerprint scanner on the 'warehouse' door. An iris scanner followed and when Mendez was done with it, the door cranked open, men clad in black with guns strapped around their chests standing behind the doors.
Their eyes all turned to the man that was holding me by gunpoint. I could feel the waiter forcibly shaking behind me.
Not so big-mouthed now, are you?
I got ready to throw this man over my shoulder but before I could make any moves, Caleb touched my hand, telling me to carry on playing along. This piqued my interest; what were they planning?
The four of us, followed by three men in black went through many door and hallways till we got to one room which one of the men in black opened for us.
"He showed some resistance when we tried to give him food so Nathan had to knock him out." The man who opened the door informed.
"Alright, we're going to need to wake him up for him to see this. Go get some water, Jason."
"Ok, sir." Jason said with a nod before going back through the endless hallways we came through just before.
The man behind me was now shaking like a leaf and I couldn't stop a smirk of satisfaction crawling over my face.
Just a little longer now before I can get his grimy hands off of me.
We went into the room and true to Jason's word, Jack lay knocked out and tied down to a seat. Jason returned with a bucket of water and looked over at Mendez who gave him a nod. Without waiting, he poured the contents of the bucket over his head.
I could feel the chill from the water from standing about 10 meters away and by the wide eyed shivering Jack who had just woken up, I presumed it was as cold as I thought.
His eyes were so full of jealousy and hate that I could practically see his silver eyes going green as he looked at Mendez.
Caleb signalled his hands next to his leg, telling me to wait.
Just a little longer.
He showed me one finger.
Just a little.
Then a second.
One more second.
Then a third.
Go.
I pulled the stunned waiters hand away from the gun, the metal clattering onto the floor. Grabbing his shoulder and knee, I slammed him onto the floor, his groans in pain telling me that I had once again done a good job.
Getting on my knee, I pulled the main up by his hair and pushed him infront of Jack.
"Go on then, aren't you going to get the man you nearly got killed for?"
He only groaned in response.
"I thought so." I seethed before slamming his face into the floor, his consciousness leaving his body before he could groan once more.
"So Jack, who's good books did you get in for them to send five men to kill us and find you, hm?" Mendez asked, lowering himself so he was looking straight into Jack's eyes.
"You're mad if you think I'll tell you anything." Jack responded, a dark smile harboring his face. He looked over Mendez and straight at me with a look mixed between pride and remorse.
Probably regretting the day he kidnapped me. All this wouldn't have happened if he just kept himself in check.
"Well, we still have Jacob, wouldn't want anything bad to happen to him, would you?"Mendez threatened. I couldn't tell if he was bluffing or not with the stoic expression on his face but I didn't show any emotion on mine either, even if I was slightly worried about his threat.
I would think that the biggest gang leader of London would follow through on his threats.
Jack looked a little conflicted, not knowing whether or not to leave Jacob with Mendez or to protect whoever he was working for.
But then as quick as I saw that, he changed it completely up, the darkness coming back to his face.
"The moment he left me for you is the moment he stopped being my son. It won't matter anyways, by tonight, I would have won anyways."
That made me stop for a minute. He was planning on doing something at the dinner, wasn't he?
Mendez and Caleb must have also read it like that too, the room falling into a quick silence.
"And what makes you think, Jack, that you would be able to outnumber and outsmart my army?"
"The fact that I have more help than you think. You'll understand how this was a plan that's been in action for years. This all might be a slight hiccup in the whole plan but we'll make it work."
"Who's we?" I asked, ice taking over my voice as I realised that this could be putting everyone in much more danger than I would have liked.
Instead of answering, Jack just let out a heartly laugh. "You little bitch, if you think that after all that I'm going to tell you anything, you're gravely mistaken."
Mendez suddenly grabbed his shirt, roughly pulling him down do that Mendez was at his ear. He said something, something that made Jack's face falter slightly before returning to a smirk.
"You still haven't told her, have you?" Jack said.
"Well, she was going to find out tonight but seems you have a different agenda."
"Oh, please, Esteban, don't stop your plans because of me. It's probably better to tell her at the dinner. You never know how it could turn out and you may never get a chance to tell her afterwards."
"You seem pretty confidant in this new ally, don't you. Don't be surprised if they drop you soon." Mendez said as he turned around, signalling for one of the men to replace Jack's gag and to tie up the waiter.
We followed him as he left the room, leaving Jason to lock the door again.
Upon leaving the warehouse, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was going to off at this dinner tonight.
"We still will need to go to the dinner tonight, just will need to let Haran know about what's going to happen so we have some preparation. This dinner is necessary and important for a lot of reasons so it can't be rescheduled but we're going to take them down, don't worry about it." Mendez said, probably already forming a plan to take out Jack's men.
"Who's Haran?" I asked. I wasn't still completely submerged in this gang stuff but I had a feeling that after this dinner, that was going to change.
"Haran is Mirage's leader. You might also know him as Derek's dad." Caleb said, breaking his silence from this whole time.
"How long have you guys been in a partnership with him?"
"They have been in a partnership before Esteban even become leader. It's a long story that can be explained later." Caleb finished before climbing into the passenger seat.
The drive back to Sapphire took about 20 minutes, enough time for me to have thought of 50 ways this dinner could go.
Only about 10 of them ended well.
A 1/5 chance wasn't too bad, was it?
