Chapter 48

True to his word, there lay a gold embroidered box on my bed, a little card note sticking sitting on top of the box.
Picking up the note, I read as follows:
I know you'll look spectacular in this today, god knows that anyone seeing you in this afternoon will think of you as snack enough.
xx Z
"What a cheeseball." I said out loud as I took the golden top off the white box. Inside lay a silver dress, glittered with jewels on the top half and intricate silver patterns covering the skirt half.
A wide smile covered my face as I unfolded the dress and took off all my clothes but my underwear. Unzipping the back, I let my fingers roam the soft material of the dress, knwing that such quality couldn't have come cheap.
I don't want to be in debt to them, I'm sure I can just pay back however much this dress was, god knows I have the money.
Slowly stepping into the dress, I looked closer at the beautiful design that covered the skirt half, appreciating each and every curl and line.
Goddammit, I can't reach the zipper.
Turning my back to the mirror, I tried to have a look at the zipper, trying to think of a way to get it up my back without having to call someone else in to help.
Come on, zipper, just go up my damn back.
Gripping and grabbing the zip seemed to do nothing and if I went at this for any longer, I knew it's break off and I really couldn't deal with what I was going to wear if I didn't have this dress. I don't even know where we were going yet.
"ARGH fuck it I'll call, erm. Who the heck am I going to call." I said to no one in particular.
Zara probably didn't want anything to do with me, I don't trust Nance or Lorna. They hay be nice but they were friends with the enemy.
The enemy which has literally done nothing to hurt you other than you beat in a fight that your fat head thought you could win.
"Shut the fuck up." I sighed as I grabbed my phone.
Before I could scroll down my contacts, a melodic knock came at the door.
Knock, knock knock knock.
"WHAT!"
A chuckle came from the other side of the door.
"You sound like you could use some help there, you know."
"Connor, get your fatass in here now and help me zip up this dress."
"Alright, m'lady. I'm coming in."
Opening the door, Connor walked up behind me and looked into the mirror that I was tanding infront of.
"I already know you're going to look absolutely jaw dropping in that, I haven't even zipped it up yet."
"Hurry up and do that." I commanded, excitement leaking through my tone.
Without wasting any time, Connor reached to the zipper which was sitting on the small of my back and zipped it to the top which sat in the middle of my back.
I could feel the air getting vacuumed out of the room as me and Connor simultaneously sucked in a quick breath.
Whoever had picked out this dress had an extremely good taste because looking in the mirror now, the mid v-neck of the dress perfectly sat on the top half of my body, the waist of the dress hugging me perfectly and then flowing down my hips so it flowed to the floor in a waterfall of soft silver.
Oh hell yeah do I look good.
It wasn't too trampy but neither was it too reserved, but it sat in the middle ground where it showed off enough just to be classy.
"It must be what you're wearing to tonight's dinner aswell. When I chose this dress, I knew it would look good on you but I vastly underestimated just how good it would look on you." Connor exclaimed, all in one breath like he was extremely flustered.
"Keep it in your pants, Mr. Adams."
"Only girl I'd ever go straight for." Connor cheekily said, adding a playful wink at the end for emphasis.
We looked at each other for a few seconds before bursting out laughing.
"And you're the only gay guy I'd ever go for."
"What, not even Zayne?"
There's no way Zayne is gay.
"Na, I don't think he is."
"He definitely is. I don't know what it is but Zayne is gay."
"You remember Tanner, right? I think he might have been. Remember when we were in Jack's? He always looked at Derek weird, but like weird how a cheerleader looks at a boy she wants to shag, kind of weird."
"I'd shag Tanner, have you seen his eyes?"
"We basically have the same eyes, you know. Let's not talk about the fact that he's like 7 years older than us as well."
"Well, if he was looking at Derek while you were clearly there, he's definitely gay. No way did he not pay you any notice."
"Shut up, you dipshit." I said, lightly wacking him around the head.
"Maya, I just have to snap a picture of you in this dress, there's no way I'm not getting a photo of you in this dress."
"Take one in half an hour when I'm done with my makeup so I look at least half decent."
"Ok, tell me when you need me to do your eyeliner."
"Not doing liner today, mind helping with my browns though?"
Nodding at me, Connor went to sit on my bed as I got to starting my makeup. I blended out some concealer under my eyes and little on my forehead. Setting it in some powder, I put on some light blush and hilighted my cheekbones and nose, waiting to go on my brow bone after Connor was done with my brows. Coating my lashes in a few coats of mascara, I signalled for Connor to come over and do my brows.
With him basically in my face, I couldn't help but notice how he didn't smell like how he usually would.
"You wearing a new perfume?"
"Don't move, I need to finish your brow."
"Hmph."
Waiting for him to finish up on my brows, I tried thinking about how familiar that smell on him was, the idea on the tip of my tongue but however hard I thought, I only got further and further away from the conclusion.
After Connor had set my brows, I concealed and hilighted them, finishing off with some setting spray.
"You can take you pictures now."
After about ten minutes of Connor fawning over how good I looked, it was ten to two. Heading downstairs, I walked into the barren living room and sat on one of the sofas.
At least, I thought I was alone till I started hearing the sound of lips against lips.
Looking to my right, I saw Shawn and Nance making out, clearly too lost in their own world to notice how I had come in.
"Ahem, you guys could just go up to one of your bedrooms, you know?"
The two of them just snapped their heads towards me then dropped their head in what looked like embarrasment.
"Sorry." Nance apologised as she raised her head.
I could tell she was going to say more but the words seemed to have gotten stuck in her throat as she looked over me, her eyes widening in surprise as she took in how I looked.
"Mendez isn't going to know what hit him." Shawn said as he did the same, earning a playful punch from Nance.
"All eyes on me, mister."
I got up and walked to the arch to leave the room and as I left the room, Mendez walked out of the room in a black suit and silver tie, matching my dress.
"Why, you just look absolutely beautiful, my dear Maya."
"Wish I could say the same for you." I snorted as I carried on moving forwards. Even though I said that, it was a given that he looked really good in his suit aswell, muscles clear in his arms as the blazer hugged his figure closely.
Any normal girl would swoon.
But I had to remember that this man was a killer. He's taken away many lives before and he's going to carry on taking lives.
I thought back to last night where I nearly went to kill this man. Now thinking about it, that was probably a real stupid idea, given the fact that this man would have learnt to defend himself even if he were unconscious.
"We'd better get going, princesa."
"Can I just ask, why did I need to dress so extra?"
"We have a dinner party to get to later, why not?"
"So this has nothing to do with where we're going now?"
"Nope, just saves a lot of time. We're going out for lunch, that's your chance to ask me anything you want to. After that, we'll be visiting a dear friend."
"Do I know said friend?"
"To an extent."
Without asking anything more, I walked out of the door, looking over the massive white driveway.
Oh my fucking god.
I didn't miss a beat as I ran up to the cars that were parked in the driveway, my eyes falling on Kira and Brylee, the two things I had missed the most during this whole ordeal.
Ok, that might be a stretch but oh hell did I miss them.
"Brylee, you're all fixed up! And Kira, oh my god you're ok. Thank God you're both ok." I cried with relief as I awkwardly tried to hug the two, only it ended in me just sprawling across the two cars.
"Mendez, we're taking Kira for a spin."
"Ok, I'll drive."
I sent him an incredulous look.
"Are you out of my mind to let you think that I'm going to let you even think about touching that steering wheel of Kira's? I don't need your grimy hands anywhere near her."
"These hands are more expensive than you're life, young lady, I'd be wary if I was you."
"Alright, grime hands."
"That's it." He said as he grabbed me, throwing me over his shoulder before I could even protest.
"Put me down before I bite you." I said, my voice cool as I tried not to panic.
He only laughed heartily though, saying "It's funny because after today, I was going to give you back Brylee and Kira but maybe I won't do that anymore."
"Touch them and your dead."
"Ahh, there it is again. An empty threat."
"It's not very empty, I tried to last night."
"I heard about that but the fact of it is, you didn't even get past the kitchen. It was pretty pathetic if I'm honest. I expected more from you."
I didn't even want to know how he found out about that.
"I've got cameras all over the house, I know what everyone is doing, when they're doing it and how. It's my house, my rules."
"I don't care, just put me down."
"Nope." He said before pulling out the keys to Kira, unlocking the car.
Opening the door, he shoved me in the passenger seat, shutting the door downwards before I could have opposed.
"For god's sake." I muttered as Mendez slipped into the drivers seat. "One scratch and I'll make you pay for a whole new car."
"Won't be a problem, I own one of the same car. Your mother and I brought it at the same time."
"Wait wha--"
"Questions at lunch, remember."
Disregarding what he just said, I tried to repeat my question.
"What do you mean, why would you and my mum even need to do that?"
Nothing.
"Mendez, I could go on all day."
Still nothing.
"My milkshake brings all the boys to yard and they're like, it's better than yours."
Absolutely nothing.
"You know what song your teeth remind me of? Shine bright like a--- kidding. BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW."
From next to me in the drivers seat, I could hear Mendez sighing, his patience probably nearly maxed out already.
"You could just answer my question."
"You could just shut the fuck up."
"It doesn't matter whether or not we get to the restaurant, you'll be answering the question anyways."
"It's because your mother and I were together."
Silence overtook the car.
I guess it was the answer I was expecting all along.
"Fine, why did you guys split up."
"Ahh, that's where it all starts getting a bit messy. See, your mother and I never split up. If she didn't die at Jack's hand, she'd still be mine."
"Women aren't possessions, she was never yours."
"Sorry, princesa, I meant she would have still been my woman."
He took a right, pulling up to a restaurant which could have easily been rated over 3 Michelin Stars.
A man stood by the drive-in. Mendez rolled down his window and the man offered to take the car down to the park.
Damn, the place was so fancy it even had valet.
Mendez nodded, getting out of the car. Walking over to my side, I waited for him to be standing just behind the door before I flung it open, only missing Mendez slightly. I sent him a dirty look which he returned as a smile.
Outstretching his arm, he non-verbally asked me to latch on. I looked around and noticed how almost all the women were linking arms with their respective man.
Looking down at his arm, I linked mine with his.
Upon entering the restaurant, I could only have described it as beautiful, the golden interior perfectly complimenting the white intricacy which laced inbetween the wallpaper. Chandeliers swung from high up the golden ceiling and the tables were all covered in white, red chairs circling them. Some seated two people, others four, some even up to 12 by the look of it.
"Hello sir, who was the reservation made under?"
"Oh, sorry madam, that would be under mine, these two are my guests." Another man said, popping up from behind the receptionist.
"Sorry sir, I hope you all have a good night." She said before letting us all past.
Walking us to the table, everyone sat down, the two men sitting either side of me around one of the round tables. The other man stretched out his arm in a handshake which I took.
"Hello, Maya. I'm Caleb Direal, I'm sorry I didn't get to meet you with the others at Sapphire but I was busy on an assignment. It's nice to finally meet you."
