Chapter 41

Please leave a vote <3

I felt relief as I heard the back door open.

Maya was out safe.

Hopefully, I would be able to defer Jack and his men, I mean, I was still his step-son, he owed it to me at least for turning me into what I am now.

Grabbing the rifle from my chest, I loaded it with the ammo that Connor had supplied.

At this point, I wasn't even surprised that Connor had access to these kinds of weapons, I mean, if you're working for Mendez, I wouldn't expect anything less.

I was almost impressed, actually, at how far Mendez was going to make sure that he got Maya alive.

Connor, Zara and I stood in the first living room, me and Zara standing either side of the doorway whilst Connor stood behind the door itself.

I was fine though, knowing that I might not make it out of here, it was a strong possibility given I had become traitor to Jack.

But it didn't matter, as long as Maya had gotten away. Derek was with her too, so she'd be happy.

She'd have someone.

With that hope in my heart, I listened intently, ready for the men to burst through the door.

All was silent for a few seconds. The calm before the storm.

And then it happened.

The first gunshot resounded through the house and then, it was raining bullets.

"GO." Connor screamed from behind the couch.

Nodding at Zara, we saw our first man.

Taking a quick aim, I squeezed down on the bullet, the satisfying sound of bullet piercing skin making it's way to my ear.

The man had hardly hit the floor before another four came at us.

I shot at three of them, two of which I had gotten in the head, another one of which was still coming at me.

Zara shot the other man down and was already aiming the gun at the man who wasn't slowing down, still charging at me.

He was hardly a few meters away from me when the sound of brains hitting wall hit my eardrums.

"Damn, I thought you were going to let him get me then." I said, nervously chuckling at Zara.

"I would never." She said, a small grin playing on her face.

We all moved back to Connor's level, making sure we still had a clear line of sight of the doorway.

By the time we had gotten to Connor's line, the wall next to us splintered.

"Shit, GET BEHIND THE TABLE." Zara screamed.

But we hardly had time to jump before the whole wall next to us exploded, sending us towards the table anyway.

The splintering from the wall covered my shirt as my face got hit by a chunk of wall.

"They really could have done that without destroying my wall." Connor groaned.

Around ten men ran through the massive hole in Connor's wall, all charging straight for us.

Connor had managed to shoot down most of the men with the machine gun he was holding in his hands.

Two men had gotten away though, still charging for us.

Zara shot the one coming at her.

I tried to shoot the one coming for me, but when I pressed down on the trigger, no bullets came out.

"Guess your luck ends there, traitor." said the man standing infront of me, a gun pointed right at my head.

"Guess it has." I said, slowly reaching into my pocket. "Not."

I thrust my hand forwards, a scream escaping the man as his gun came clattering to the ground.

I withdrew my hand from him, pulling out the knife in the process.

It dripped, red with his blood and like I said before, with each life I took, I lost a part of myself.

At the rate I was going, there was going to be nothing left.

But like I'd said before as well, it's fine, as long as Maya got out of this in one piece.

It was like playing Plants vs Zombies, the waves just kept on coming.

But by the fifth wave of them, their number of men started dwindling.

Now there were only two men, two men which I knew very, very well.

Now standing in front of me was Isten, Jack's muscle.

He was loyal, I could give you that much. The way he stood by Jack even after he knew what he was doing was wrong was almost honourable if it wasn't for the fact that they were after Maya.

"Where's the girl?"

I smirked at him.

"Long gone."

He looked over at Tanner, sending him a look to go after her.

"He can chase her if he wants, but he'll never get her."

"Oh, I know." he said.

What?

"See, Jack's already on her trail, she didn't exactly make it hard by screaming his name, telling him to come find her."

I suddenly felt cold. We'd done all this, just to make sure she got away safe and now here she was, dancing with the devil.

Derek was meant to be there with her, why hadn't he stopped her?

Fuck, I was going to kill them both if we made out of this alive.

"I don't believe you. Where's Tanner gone then."

"To give him some backup; we know about Connor's cabin. We know she's planning something, she's not stupid."

She was going to get herself killed.

I was so bust trying to think of ways to kill Maya myself that I'd loosened my grip in my gun. Isten knocked it out of my hands with ease.

"Oops." he said as he raised his gun to my head.

I felt around for my knife but then I looked over to the ground. There it was, just as bloody as I left it when I  dropped it to grab my gun.

Maybe I wasn't going to make it  out of here to kill Maya.

Jokes aside, I was genuinely terrified. Not for myself, but for Maya.

I needed her to get out of this alive, I needed her to counter my bad, I needed her to balance me out.  I couldn't do that while she was dead, could I?

Isten looked so proud in himself for having me cornered. I couldn't even do anything about it.

Tanner must have also called in more men because Zara and Connor were now fighting again, gunshots resounding from everywhere in the room.

"Any last words, traitor?"

But before I could even let any words escape my mouth, Isten just dropped his gun, grabbing his leg in a scream.

His eyes looked so helpless as he fell, taking in his laboured breaths.

But I couldn't focus on that.

No. The only things I  could focus on were the hazel eyes that were staring at me from across the room.

Tanner stood there in all his glory as he held the handgun that had brought Isten down.

A wide smile went across his face as he noticed me.

We stood  there for a few seconds, me paralyzed to the spot and him smiling at me before men stormed the door down.

But this time, I recognised them as friends, not enemies.

DI Greene and his men stood there, looking at us as if it wasn't an actual bloodbath in here moments before.

Connor and Zara finished off the last of Jack's troops as I just stood there in awe.

So Tanner was a friend all along?

What the fuck was going on?
