Chapter 39

I heard footsteps receding from the doorway of the room and I already knew it was Jacob.

I knew that it hurt him, seeing that I was close to Derek but he had to know that I couldn't just discard Derek because he liked me. It's not like his feelings could have been that great either, I'd only known him for like a month.

I pulled away from Derek after both of our sobbing had went down significantly. He wiped his face and I wiped my own before we both got up.

"You know, Jacob saw a lot of that. He was in the doorway holding a mug of something."

"I'd asked him to get me some coffee. He likes me you know."

"I'm not surprised." He said but then his eyes widened, as if he said something he shouldn't have.

"What?"

"Nothing, don't think about it too much."

"Ok, I need to go find Jacob."

"Oh, ok." He said, his voice slightly betraying the fact that he was a little upset and a little annoyed.

I ignored it though, knowing that questioning it would probably only put me in another situation.

I got up and walked out of the room, the headache I was sporting from earlier completely gone. Guess the painkillers did their work.

I looked around for him and I couldn't find him anywhere, that was until I went back into the kitchen.

He stood there, hands both face down on the brink of the sink.

He was breathing heavily, as if he was almost angry.

"Jacob, you ok?"

"I'm fine, don't worry about it."

"I know you saw what happened between me and Derek."

"I know you know but that's not what I'm worried about right now."

Relief flooded over me as he told me that he wasn't too fazed, that made things that much easier.

"What's wrong then?"

"You're in danger, Maya, and my step-dad's the one who's the stem of this danger. I don't think it's safe for you to be here for much longer."

"If you're talking about what Connor and Zara were talking about, I trust them, ok? I've been thinking about it for a while and honestly? I trust them enough to believe that whatever they're doing is for my benefit. If they wanted something bad to happen to me, it definitely would have already happened. And you were there when they were talking, they seemed more scared about the face that I was in danger than whether Mendez was going to get to them. I trust them so if it all goes backwards, it's on me ok?"

After a few brief moments of silence, Jacob's shoulders un-tensed and he nodded, taking a deep breath.

"Ok, fine, I trust you so I trust them too."

But I must have spoken too soon because all of a sudden, Connor had rushed into the room, hysterical as he kept saying something about us being compromised.

He pushed us downstairs, yelling at us to go faster.

He took us down to a room which he then unlocked.

"Ok, guys, control room is telling me they saw Tanner standing outside our door, they have machine guns and all and there is well over 5 of them there. I need Derek to take Maya out back and I need Jacob to help us out at the front, if they see it's you, they might let us go."

"Or they might just kill us."

"We have too much training for that."

"Too much training for what?" I asked but Connor looked at me then decided he wasn't going to answer.

As Connor turned on the light, my eyes widened in shock as I looked into the room.

There were enough military grade weapons in here to arm an actual army.

"Derek, Maya, grab a handgun and the ammo which is in the crate down there. Jacob, grab a rifle and I want a shotgun strapped on your back. Ammo is going to be strapped onto you too, hurry up.  Come on! They're about to fucking gun us down!" Connor screamed at us.

Me and Derek ran off, trying to navigate our way through the room to find what we needed.

"Hurry up, you guys are going to be dead in a minute or else." Zara pleaded.

I'd grabbed what I needed for me and Derek and found my way back to the door again.

Everyone seemed strapped up and ready, yet I still couldn't shake the fact that even though they had this planned out, something was going to happen.

"Zara, what's going on?"

"I'm so sorry, but I really can't explain right no--"

But before she could finish speaking, a massive crash could be heard from the front of the house.

"Shit, they've already made their move. GET OUT MAYA." Connor screamed, worry and fear written across his face.

Derek grabbed my wrist, pulling me upstairs back onto the ground floor.

"We got to get out."

"Yes. I know."

Ok, I may be a bit oblivious sometimes but I'm not completely stupid.

He led me to the back of the house, into a room I hadn't actually been in before. Opening the door, he pulled me to the back of the room and on the floor was a latch. He pulled it open, pushing me to get in.

Sensing his urgency, I quickly grabbed the ladder and began climbing down.

I was nearly at the bottom when I felt something hit my head.

"Ow, Derek, that was my head."

"I'm sorry that you're going down this ladder at the speed of a dead snail."

"I do want to get out of this alive, that means not dying from falling off a ladder. Just slow down a little, the others will buy us time."

"If what Connor said about the numbers of them outside is true, chances are, they're going to have to leave soon aswell, or they'll get killed."

I carried on climbing down, thinking about what he'd told me.

It's true. And that scared me a lot.

Connor, Zara and Jacob could get themselves killed out there.

They'd be getting themselves killed, trying to get me and Derek out safe.

I'd made a promise a few weeks ago, I'd promised that I'd get everyone I cared about out of this mess but all I'd done was get them further into it.

"Derek, they will make it, right?"

"Of course they will." He said but the level of uncertainty in his voice didn't reassure me at all. It sounded more like he was trying to get himself to believe that.

They weren't going to make it.

And suddenly, there was such a loud scream from up above that I let go of the ladder, landing straight on my ass on the floor.

Thank god it wasn't too far down.

But the scream I'd heard, I couldn't get it out of my head.

It didn't belong to anyone on my side, that was a relief but they still must have been struggling up there.

"Derek, I'm so scared."

"I am too, Mays, I am too."

And with that, I got up and walked with Derek, one arm around him, the other hand on my gun.

I was ready for this, I wasn't going to  let the others bare all the brunt for the situation I seemed to have caused.

No.

Everyone was going to get out of this safely.

At least, that's what I wanted to believe.
