Chapter 21

I can literally feel my brain doing somersaults because I can't even try to come up with any ideas about what the hell is going on right now.

First of all, why the hell did Tanner have Martinn's medications?

Second of all, why did Tanner have a board with Maya in the middle?

Third of all, why was this all news to me?

And that's when it hit me. What is Martinn Roberts rearranged?

Tanner Trisromb.

I remember the deal I had made with Greene that if I was going to have Tanner chaperoning my every move, I want to know what's going on at all times of the investigation, especially if it had direct ties to Maya.

With Interpol breathing down his neck, what the hell did Tanner think he was doing, dancing with the enemy? Did he think he was being smart? Did he think he was going to get anything from playing double agent?

So many questions swirled around my head that I was oblivious to the fact that Tanner had stirred. I had only realised once I felt a pair of eyes drilling into my back.

Slowly turning around, I came face to face with a metal object. A metal object that I know shouldn't be flung around without care.

For the second time in my life, I was looking down the barrel of a gun.

This was starting to get old.

"What are you holding there, Derek?"

My eyes quickly travelled to the bottle of sleeping pills that lay in my hand, the incriminating evidence unavoidable. I couldn't even hide them if I tried and I couldn't pretend like I didn't see Martinn's name on the bottle because that look on his face told me everything  I needed to know.

He knew that I knew.

Raising my arms in surrender, I felt myself trembling slightly at the deja by this whole situation caused.

"I guess you have a lot of questions but they're just going to have to wait. Follow me right now if you don't want a bullet in your head."

"You can't kill me with your issues and expect there not to be any questions."

"I know, that's why it's unlicensed. You forget that I could easily lie my way out of this situation, you're the only witness and funnily enough, you'll be dead. I'll give you ten seconds and after that, you can say bye bye to Maya, me and the rest of this world."

Scrambling to my feet, I kept my arms raised above my head.

I wonder, could I do that trick that Maya has always gotten away with, by pushing the gun out of his hands like she's done to me many a time before?

Tanner's face turned stone cold as I walked infront of him cautiously. Jabbing my back with his gun, I felt a light cold sweat break out over my back.

I could literally die right now.

I turned my head but I immediately wished I hadn't because the sinister grin on his face did nothing to calm my nerves. It actually did the complete opposite and I could feel my hands getting clammy.

I tried to stay calm but calm and collected Derek was no where to be seen. All those years of building up a string front came crumbling down right away.

Facing situations like these, it makes me think what I could have done to avoid it all.

What if I had just called Maya out in her blatant lie about the gym? What if I had just ignored her and done some homework instead?

What ifs circled around my head like a vulture eyeing prey.

I saw Tanner holster his gun but his gaze remained deadly as he warned me to not pull anything and then pushed me into the passenger seat of his car.

The tension in the air was thick, so thick that even a simple butter knife could have shattered the atmosphere of the car.

I could feel the questions bubble inside me more and more and I couldn't keep them at bay, especially knowing that Maya could bare the brunt of it all.

"Tanner," I started, watching him carefully "what's going on?"

But all I saw was him roll his eyes and mutter something like 'I don't have time for this.' under his breath.

He turned on the car and started to drive. He drove for hours and hours and at around 3 or 4 hours after we had left, he pulled up at a gas station.

Eyeing me with caution, he got out of the car and locked it shut.

After he had turned his back, I let the panic set in. I'd just been kidnapped.

I could feel heat coming at me and from me in all directions as I used my limited time to find something I could use to aid my escape. I looked in the side pockets of the car and through the glove compartment, desperate to find anything, a phone, a gun, anything.

Terror flared through me as I realised that time was running short and that Tanner had reached the cash register already.

Roaming my hands around the car, I felt the slight raising of a carpet which peaked my interest.

It kind of reminded me of a savage animal, the way I pulled back the carpet to the floor for my seat. But it was all worth it when I saw the small brick phone laying on the floor inside the hidden compartment.

I grabbed the phone and guessed that I had about 3 minutes before Tanner returned.

Typing in the number Greene had told me to memorise, I sent an SOS and described my situation, explaining everything I could in as much detail as I could but you could probably guess that for my deadline, I could only write so much.

I felt my heart sink as I noticed Tanner walking back to the car, his terrifying expression not faltering as he held my gaze.

What had happened to the timid Tanner from just a few days ago?

Getting into the driver seat, he eyed me intensely, making me think that he knew what I had done but I felt myself relaxing when he turned to face the steering wheel again, my whole body slumping against the surprisingly soft leather seats of the car. If it wasn't for this compromising situation, I would have felt at home with the luxury and sophistication of the car I was sat in.

Tanner drove for about an hour again I'd say but I didn't trust my judgement. It could have been hours, maybe only half an hour but it felt like months had passed before we pulled back into a house.

Nevermind, calling it a house was a big, big stretch.

It was more like a mansion which had been managed and built by Van Gough, the way it beautifully merged in with its environment only adding to the nearly magical element of the house.

Tanner saw me ogling the house and a smirk appeared on his face.

"If you think the outside is impressive, wait until you see the inside." he said, followed by a snigger.

But I only caught onto the irony of his statement a few seconds too late as I felt a burlap sack being thrown over my head.

I would have even found this situation funny, should it not have been me who this was happening to.

Being pushed around like some kids doll wasn't my idea of a fun past time but, given my situation, I didn't have much choice. I could swear that by the amount I've nearly tripped up the floor, we were walking up some stairs heading to a higher floor.

I was pushed around like this for only five minutes before I was forced down onto a bed.

Removing the sack, Tanner smirked again then left the room, leaving me in deep thought.

The room was a mixes of greys and soft blues but for the most part of it, the room was empty. The bedsheets were a striped grey and white whereas the wallpaper was a light blue, edging a grey. The furniture was all a darker shade of grey, complimenting the slight off white carpet under my feet.

The only real different point to the room was a picture that hung on the wall, a picture of three boys. The boy on the right had greeny-blue eyes and brown hair whereas the boy in the middle had curly black hair and intense hazel eyes, in some way reminding me of Maya. The boy on the right though, I easily identified as the man I shot in the thigh when he tried to get his hold on Maya the first time. Then it dawned on me that the boy with the brown hair was Brian, Maya's dad.

Why was there a picture of the man who tried to hurt Maya with Maya's dad on the wall?

Then I realised that the picture was old, like it was a childhood relic of some kind of childhood relic.

It was clear that whatever was going on now had a lot more to it than just a random man on a killing spree, there was something more to this story. Something more I was going to find out.
