Four years later!
"Haba! All I'm asking is for you to give me the chicken!" I scowled and eyed Prince. He didn't look my way as he flipped the chicken cuts.
"Can't you wait?" he chuckled. I let my gaze up and down his figure. His look left me wondering how a person could be both cute and handsome all at the same time. He was wearing my purple apron but looked far better on him than on me. My eyes dropped to the fry pan and I began to salivate again.
"No na! I just want to taste," I whined.
"Don't worry. Don't taste. It is sweet. I know it is. Don't bother about tasting," he replied and winked at me.
"What you are doing is not good oo"
"Last time I allowed you to taste, you finished the chicken before the whole food was ready. What you did that day was not good oo," he responded and threw an accusing look at me. I shrugged nonchalantly and picked a fresh apple from the bowl on the counter. We were in the our home, the new duplex we had saved and built to our taste. The kitchen had all the features I had always prayed to have. It had a fancy bar room filled with healthy, nourishing drinks. Yep, I'm still the same doctor that's against alcohol. The kitchen was spacious with dishwasher, inbuilt gas cooker and microwave and other machines. It had a large window that I love. It allowed the sunlight to seep in and filter on my belly bed husband. His brown skin gleaming with beads of sweat rolling down his forehead, face and to his neck.
"Ah ahan! It was our one year dating anniversary. I had to enjoy"
"So?"
"This is our first wedding anniversary. You can't even pamper me?" I gasped dramatically and shook my head. "This hurts so much".
"I will pamper you after the rice has boiled and the table is set," he said with an air of confidence and continued his work on the chicken.
"Ah na!" I exclaimed and lifted myself up on the counter. "What's your own sef?"
"It's for your own good. Don't you want to see fried chicken on your plate of rice?"
"Forget that one," I grumbled and crossed my arms over my chest.
He shook his head in silence. My cheek flushed as I watched him cook. I still didn't understand how he tolerated me but he did. No matter how childish, stubborn or annoying I act, he had this patience with me that I admired. God knew I needed a man like this. I'm just so grateful right now. Prince was my better half. Sometimes, I feel he knows me more than I know myself. It's crazy but mostly true. He knew how to make me happy. He always knows what I need and at what time to give it to me. I won't say he is perfect in everything nor can I say his character is flawlessly. He is human and he does have his days when I'm like "Who is this Prince?" But we learnt that we shouldn't condemn ourselves but work together to build our relationship. We should not be the one to cause the flaws to be obvious but to help mend and grow the person more. We should bring out the best from our spouse and that can't be possible if we aren't showing our loving, good and Christlike characters. Prince and I have learnt to understand ourselves and that's why we never get tired of each other's company. Today was our wedding anniversary. We had dated for two years to get to know ourselves better and to grow our career and then, we married last year.
As soon as Prince took the fried, crispy chicken out of the hot oil, my eyes were on them. He placed them in a plate and proceeded to fry the others. While he wasn't watching, I sneaked to it and my hands, midway to it, he slapped off. He took the plate and rose it to the air.
"Try and catch it!"
I hopped on my feet but couldn't reach it. "Just because you are tall, abi?"
"You are tall too"
"Not like you. Give me the chicken jor"
"Okay!" He replied with a meek smile and I smiled back. He took them and swiftly placed them in a cabinet he knew I couldn't reach.
"Stop na," I whined like a child and spanked his butt.
He burst into laughter and shook his head again. "When will you change?"
"When you start loving me more. Now, spoil me with fried chicken jhare"
"Your job is to make the rice and salad. My love, allow me to do my own in peace. Please," he voiced and the word love had a nice ring to it. He moved back to concentrate on the sizzling chicken cuts.
"Why can't I be given the task to fry the chicken?'
"You will eat them all"
"It's a lie!"
"It's the truth"
"It's not fair"
He glanced at me, winked and sent his sexy smirk he knows I liked. "I love you so much, my angel".
"Go away! Chop your love jor. I no want am"
"Okay oo!" he laughed. "You have said your own. I won't say anything".
"Don't say anything. Mtcheww!"
I frowned and he left his work to peck my cheek. I feigned my anger some more and slapped his arm. "You- " I was cut short by the shrieking sound of Prince's ringtone. "Your phone is ringing, Charming".
I had decided to call him Charming than to say the full words 'Prince Charming'.
"Go and pick it. It must be mum," he replied with pleading eyes.
"You go and pick it. Let me handle the chicken," I suggested and hopped off the counter.
"No way!" he wiggled his index finger in the air.
"Why na?"
"You will eat the chicken"
"Prince, so you don't trust your wife? Haba!"
"Mum will want to talk to you. Go and answer the phone"
"How do you know she wants to talk to me?"
He tsked and sent a teasing look at me. "I know my mom will want to talk to you. Everytime she is always telling me to give the phone to you. What did you even give my mom that she loves you more than me?"
My face lit up with a bright, toothy smile. "She saw my uniqueness na".
"Hm....Cocky much!"
"Don't even talk" I glared at him
"Okay oo!" He chuckled and blew an airkiss at me.
I growled and exclaimed, "Why did I even marry you again?"
"Because you love me!" He replied and exploded into fit of laughter.
His phone had stopped ringing when I had gotten to the living room. I threw myself on the couch and dialed his mother's number again. She picked at the first ring.
"Mother in law!" I exclaimed.
"Daughter in law"
"Sweetest mum!"
"Most beautiful daughter"
"How are you ma?" I greeted and a cheerful smile rested on my face.
"My dear, I am fine oo. My waist is paining me but it's still fine. I will be fine. Don't tell Prince oo. He will start to worry and I am tired of going to the hospital or seeing that doctor's face"
"Mum, don't forget what I use to tell you- "
She cut in. "If you have any health issue to talk about, tell me. I'm a doctor too".
I nodded though she couldn't see me. "Exactlyyy!"
"You are always telling me this. Madam surgeon. How's the children in the hospital that you take care of?" she inquired and I could her the joy in her voice as she spoke to me. I don't know how it happened but after Prince's mother had recovered from her heart attack and her husband had survived the coma, she changed. She became more close to God and it influenced her attitude to life. She became more loving and that allowed her to easily accept me as her daughter in law. Soon, our relationship got close too and we now share a mother-and-daughter bond. Mr Arinze, Prince's dad, has also accepted me in the family. Barbara didn't like me at first but when she discovered I meant the whole world to Prince, she was forced to accept me. Presently, our relationship is good. As for his brother, we are chilled. He is a cool boy but he is more extroverted than Prince and his good looks has gotten too deep in his head. Sometimes I feel like he thinks he is worldwide handsome.
"....the children there must love you.....also.....Wait! Hello? Anita, are you still there?"
"Huh?" I snapped out of my thoughts.
"I'm asking about the hospital?"
"Oh okay! Hmm..The hospital? It's good. The children are all fine"
"What are you called again? Remind me. You know how my old age dey affect me na. I don't remember well again," she burst into laughter.
I chuckled. "I'm called a pediatrician".
"Ehen! My daughter"
"Sweetest mum!"
"My dear, I just remembered. Your mum and I want to go shopping tomorrow. We have some native soup we want to cook"
"Mad oo! My best mothers hanging out oo"
"Yes!" She chirped. "It's so nice that you like children. I can already imagine how much love you will show on my grand children".
"Hmm....Mama! Grandchildren?"
"Yes oo! I have been patient oo. You and Prince said you want to build your career and relationship first. In fact, I think you guys are perfect and should start having the children. Start with a girl. I like when girls are first born".
"But you gave birth to a boy as firstborn?"
"He suppose be a girl".
I gasped. "Ah! Omo!"
"Yes oo"
"Imagine Prince as a girl!" I exclaimed. "E go too choke".
"What do you mean?" She quizzed.
"I mean. Prince would have still looked good as a girl"
"I wanted to call her Princess sef," Mrs Arinze disclosed.
"Ah! Mama na! So you wanted a girl sef"
"Yes na! But I'm glad it was a boy. I'm so happy I have a wonderful and caring son like Prince," she said and let out a satisfied sigh.
"I always thank the Lord for having Prince in my life. I know I am not a saint and my relationship with God wasn't so close at that time but he gave me a man that I can say is the born of my born and flesh of my flesh".
"Yes oo! Are you two still going to visit Amarachi in jail?"
"Yes! We decided to do it today. We want to speak to her. We want to start a new relationship with her. Actually, I've learnt to forgive and I am going to forgive her".
"I love that you and Prince are growing close to God as a couple. God bless your marriage oo. It will never fail nor break. Amen!"
"Amen oo"
"Where is Prince?"
"In the kitchen"
"Hmmm..." Mrs Arinze hummed. "I'm still surprised that you have made my boy a number one fan of the kitchen. Someone that is too busy to even remember to eat is now cooking for his wife".
I blushed and bit my bottom lip, my gaze directed to the ceiling as I lay on the couch. "But warn Prince oo. He doesn't want me to eat chicken".
"Call him for me. How can he do that to our angel?"
"Ehen! Prince, your mom wants to speak to you," I screamed out.
"I'm coming," he replied from the kitchen.
I gave him the phone and allowed him to get absorbed by his mom's gist. I went to the kitchen and quickly picked a small piece of chicken. I munched on it and all of a sudden, the hot oil splashed and met my tender skin. The pain crawled in and I yelped. I glared at the hot oil. It continued to sprinkle oil on the cooker, ignoring my existence.
"You don't like to hear word," Prince snarled as he walked in.
"What do you mean?"
He narrowed his eyes at me. "You hurt yourself, didn't you?"
I laughed nervously. "Not really".
He shook his head at my words and came to my side. "Why are you rubbing your arm?"
My eyes fell to my arm. Indeed, I was rubbing it. "Hot oil actually touched me," I let out shyly. i wasn't a fan of this kind of moments. I don't like to hurt myself. My job was to help people who got hurt not hurt myself and watch people help me. With Prince, I had learnt to get used to him worrying about any little injuries I got.
"I'm fine. It's just a burn," I said the moment his face became gloomy.
"I don't like seeing you hurt"
"I'm fine"
"No oo! An ointment must be on it," he snapped and rushed out of the kitchen.
I facepalmed myself and ran after him, "Prince stop oo. I'm fine".
He later forced an ointment on my arm and we finished preparing the food. We ate in our dining room, laughing and chatting.
Later that day, we went to see Amarachi in the jail. Her dad was sentenced to death by hanging while she was sentenced to life imprisonment. Surprisingly, she had welcomed us with a sweet, joyous smile and had said she supported our marriage. I noticed she had this peace and joy that I had to ask her why.
Amarachi looked at me, her smile still in place and she replied, "I learnt to trust in God and in him, I find peace daily".
The words still rung in my head. Prince, his family and I have forgiven Amarachi and her dad for all they had done to us. Why you may ask, because we learnt that we should, "From Ephesians 4:32, Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you".
We were actually motivated by Freddy and Naomi since they had given support to Kate and her family despite all she had done to them. Forgiving was hard but worth it. It makes your heart healthy and keeps you happy. I'm a doctor. I've seen a real heart and how bloody it can be. However, with my journey with Prince, I knew the heart can have other function than the biological ones I know about. I haven't really comprehended what love is but I know storing rotten food items isn't good so as storing grudges in your heart isn't good.
After hearing Amarachi's words I was speechless as we left the prison. On our way to our car, the ground below me began to spin. I thought I was dreaming and just kept moving, hoping to get a grip of Prince's shirt since he was a few steps away from me. Just when I was about to touch him, I fell to the ground with a loud thud. My whole body became numb and I fell helplessly into pitch black.
When I opened my eyes again, it felt like I just slept and woke up. But as a doctor, I knew I didn't. I fainted and my calculating brain did its best to figure out why. I was out of options and watched the hospital room door in hope that Prince would walk in. He did, his eyes red with worry and his brows creased. He let out a sigh of relief when he saw me awake on the bed. A man stood behind him with his white coat and stethoscope, I knew he was a doctor.
"Good afternoon Mr and Mrs Arinze," he greeted.
I'm not still used to my new name. Anita Angel Arinze. Triple A!
"Good afternoon!" I replied.
"Please, have a seat sir" he instructed Prince and nodded with a calm, reassuring smile.
"I hope all is well. How's my wife?" Prince asked.
I smirked. I'm the wife oo! Hmm...I be hot wife oo! No try me. I too fine sef. Hot wife and hot husband equals to....Do the maths!
"She is fine oo. In fact...." The doctor smiled and glanced at me. His eyes flickered to my belly before he turned them to Prince. My eyes widened in realization and I touched my stomach. What's he about to say?
"You have to take care of your wife more," he said to Prince.
Prince shuddered in fear. "What's wrong, doctor? Speak to me".
"Your wife is fine oo," he replied and chuckled.
This doctor is not well. Why does he want to start beating around the bush?
I rubbed my belly. I studied it the way I used to study the pregnant patients I sometimes had. "I'm pregnant," I announced.
The doctor's head whipped to my direction.
"Right? I'm pregnant"
A broad smile spread on his face. "Yes ma. You are right. You are pregnant".
I bobbed my head calmly. I glanced at Prince he did the same. The doctor cocked a brow at our reaction.
"Any more information?" I asked.
"Yes! Quadruplets, ma"
"WHAT?" I screamed. Prince's voice was louder than mine as he yelled, "You say what now?"
"Yes, you are fourteen weeks pregnant and the scan shows four babies in your womb. Congratulations," he answered with a firm voice. I could see his eyes lit up with excitement.
"Thank you," Prince rose and surprisingly, escorted him out of the room. As soon as he left, Prince placed his hands on his head. "Quadruplets?"
I nodded. Our eyes locked and he strode to me. "Four babies, angel?" He exclaimed.
"Yep," I nodded. "That's what the doctor said".
"You are pregnant," his eyes welled up with tears. I nodded as my eyes also began to sting. "You are pregnant".
I nodded. He opened his arms to me and I cuddled in. My tears exploded and I felt his body vibrated as tears from his eyes soaked my hospital gown and rolled down my shoulder to my back. He leaned away and wiped my eyes. "Don't cry".
I shook my head. "This is different, Prince. This is tears of joy".
His eyes drilled into mine.
"I didn't imagine my life would turn this way. I never thought I would find this kind of happiness. I was clueless on the kind of woman I would marry. In fact, I only thought of business and money. I didn't plan a martial life. You came in and gave me happiness and now you want to give me a home. A home with four kids? Quadruplets? Anita, I don't think I deserve you".
"Are you crazy? Don't say that!"
"I don't think I will be a good dad"
"Prince, stop" my tears ran down in torrents as I watched him sob.
"God is just too good to me. I don't understand," he sniffed and wiped his face with his arm. I pulled him into a heartwarming hug.
"You will be an amazing father through the blessings and wisdom of God. You deserve me, Prince. You are the only right man for me. What God has joined, let no man put asunder. Stop doubting, please".
"I love you," he said as tears streamed down his face. "I'll be the best friend, husband and father I can be. I promise you".
"And I promise to be the best friend, wife and mother I can be," I voiced with a smile. "I love you too".
He leaned to me and we shared a kiss I would never forget.
Time to make plans for four kids in our life. I wonder what their genders would be.
