How I planned my week was far different from how it turned out. I yawned and began my rush back into a patient's room. For four days, I've been in and out the hospital. My work got tougher and tedious than before. The new doctor that I was under was determined to bring out the best in me. I haven't met him but I knew the right word to describe him– Ambitious and hardworking.
After another surgery, I went to the cafeteria and ate my first meal for the day. It was eleven in the morning. I knew I won't have time to get lunch with Prince. I miss him. For four days, we haven't seen each other. He had tried so much to create time for us to meet for lunch but I never had the time to join him. I sighed as I now moved to the locker room. The moment I opened the locker, I saw the red roses lying in it. For this four days, I had received four red roses.
Who is sending this mystery roses?
The letters that came with it always says I miss you and it's anonymous. I picked my phone that lay beside it and dialed it. Prince picked on the first ring.
"Hello, angel!" His voice echoed with hope. "How are you? Should I come pick you up for lunch?"
"Nope! I've eaten. I have a surgery to attend to in the next thirty minutes," I replied.
"Oh!" he voiced.
"Yeah!" A sigh escaped my lips.
"When will it be done?"
"I don't know how many hours it will take but I know I'll go home late today"
"Like how late?"
"Like maybe after eleven," I sighed again. "Na wa oo! Who send you to get me a diligent doctor".
His sweet chuckle that I so miss, rang and it sent a shiver down my spine and to my toes. I bit my lips and rushed to the nearest chair. "I want you to be the best and so I got the best to teach you".
A large smile spread to my face. "You want me to be the best? Why?"
"Cos I can't wait to see you establish your own hospital?"
"My own hospital?"
"Yes, angel! I want the best from you. Make me proud," he chuckled. "Also...."
"Also?"
"Hm....My sweetest girlfriend," he cooed.
"Ah! Wetin dey sup? "
"I'm sad"
My brows shot up. "Why?"
"My bestfriend came over to my office today. I've told him about you and I said I'll introduce you to him. But I got a big surprise. He came today with four of my childhood friends," he explained.
I snickered, "Why are you sad then? Meeting your friends is a good thing"
"It's because...." he said, feigning sob. I quickly put my phone in loud speaker mode. I'm shocked to see Prince being this childish and dramatic.
"It's because you aren't eating lunch with me today," he added.
"So? You can eat with your friends"
"They said I'll die lonely," he chortled and sighed.
I burst into a fit of laughter. "Ah! Why?"
"They said I'm too workaholic to use my looks to get a babe," he replied.
The gist captured my attention and I crossed my legs as I sat on the chair. I placed my phone close to ear, my undivided attention on it.
"What did you say?"
"I didn't want to say anything since our relationship is just on a contract and won't last long," he voiced, levelly but to me, it stabbed every corner and part of my heart. "Two of my friends are married with kids. They spoke so well about their family and relationship and I felt oppressed, angel".
"Ah!" I forced with a bitter laughter. "You chose to be single na. Why are you then sad?"
"Well, I actually boast about you and how you are the most beautiful woman and my girlfriend," he laughed and I froze. "I showed them the pictures we took at the beach and they said they must meet you today. I told them that you are a surgeon and they think I'm lying. So the sad part is that I'm hidden in another office, calling you and getting a reply that you won't come. How will I explain to them?"
"Oh!"
"Yep!"
"Tell them I have a surgical operation soon," I replied.
"I know and I will"
"Okay!"
Silence fell between us. I chewed on my bottom lip and stared at the wooden door across me. "I'm sorry I disappointed you"
"No problem," he said with a sigh.
Another irritating silence stretched for a minute. "So are we really dating or still the contract stuff?"
"The contract. I am not ready for a relationship"
"Then, tell them you don't have a relationship. Tell them the truth about yourself. Maybe they can help you get rid of Amarachi," my voice came out acidic. I couldn't help it. "Tell them that I'm your fake girlfriend to frustrate Amarachi till she leaves you".
"Do you think they'll help me out of it?"
"Yeah! Whatever! Am I your friend? Ask them na. Maybe it will allow us to end the relationship on time. I can see you are already stressed sef," I hissed. My fist clenched and I bit my lips some more.
"I'm not stressed," he replied, clearly annoyed.
"You are"
"I'm not"
"You are," I rolled my eyes and hissed aloud to show my irritation. "Bye! Get back to your friends and...".
I rose to my feet and moved to my locker. I opened it and my eyes fell on the roses. "Did you send me red roses?" I asked calmly.
"Roses? No! I didn't"
"Oh!" The disappointment was evident in my voice.
"You got roses?"
"Yeah! Probably another guy screaming his love to me," I replied as if it was a daily thing.
Funny thing is that it kinda happens a lot. Either through texts, calls or in person. Some guys do beg for my attention.
"Love?"
"Whatever! I don't think I'm even ready for relationship. I've got dreams. Thanks for reminding me. Play time is over," I remarked acidly.
"Wait! Are you angry?" he said and I could imagine the cute puppydog eyes he has.
A grown man with such beautiful and cute expression is kinda hard to believe.
"I'm not," I replied, void of emotions. "I got to go. Bye! I hope your friends help you out".
"Wait..."
I cut in, "I want to ask, what problem do you have with relationship?"
"I..."
"You know what....Goodbye!" I said and terminated the call. I switched off my phone and tossed it into my locker. The loud thud made me quickly pick my phone up. I rubbed it tenderly and laid it down....gently. I turned my gloomy eyes to the roses and scoffed. I put on all I need to wear for the operation and headed out.
As I walked down the hallway, my thoughts ran wild.
In a way, I feel like I'm a tool to Prince. He's using me to chase Amarachi away. I know I agreed to it but sadly, I got my feelings involved. Wrong move, Anita.
"Anita oo! Can't you hear your name? Are you deaf?" I heard a disembodied voice yell.
I slowly turned around and folded my arms over my chest.
"What happened?" a worried look rushed to her face. Chisom, my colleague and friend, placed her palm on my forehead. "Are you sick?"
"Nah! Mood swing," I mumbled.
"Oh!" She responded and waved me off.
"Why did you call me? I have somewhere to go"
"Hey! You know I told you about the new doctor," she said in excitement.
"Yeah! So?"
"You get to see his handsome face today. He's the one in charge of the operation. Also..." she waggled her brows. "He said I should call you. He wants to talk to you at his office. You can check him out and see for yourself. He is a hottie. I hope he notices me and asks me out".
I rolled my eyes.
Another sad news...I only wish to stare at Prince and no one else. It's a really sad news. Anyways, I think I want to break up with Prince. That's if we are dating sef. I need a real relationship to get over him.
I smirked. "Let me see this doctor sef. I need some fun in my life. Maybe a sweet relationship will be nice," I thought aloud.
"Madam! I saw him first oo. Don't go and use your big bumbum to steal him from me. Carry your fine face to another side. I take God beg you," Chisom said between laughter.
"Too late! Where is his office sef?" I chuckled as I headed to the stairs.
"Anita, have mercy na! Go and look for another man na. I know you can catch the attention of any man of your choice," she said with a serious tone. I blew an airkiss to her and she pouted.
"Ole" she snickered and walked down the opposite direction. I waved to her and headed to the new doctor's office.
I got there and knocked on the door. It opened and a nurse walked out. "He's not around but you can wait inside," she informed me and left with a file in her hand.
I sucked in a rush of air and walked in. I decided to stand and wait for him. Three minutes later, my thoughts were back to Prince. I was trying to understand how I fell for him and why.
"Sorry for the delay," a deep voice boomed when the door opened.
"No problem, doc!" I spun to face him. Our eyes met and my blood drained from me.
Stephen smiled at once. "Anita! Hello"
He moved and pulled me into a hug. I pushed him away.
How dare you?
"I've missed you," he said.
I paused. "The roses?"
"Yes!" he nodded. "I have another one. I don't mind sending them everyday. I'm so glad I get to work here. Can you please forgive me?".
"Pfft!" I snorted and rolled my eyes. "You're glad you get to work here? Really? Have you ever been ignored? That's exactly what I'm gonna do to you".
I stomped to the door. He rushed to it and stood in my way. He grasped my hand in his and entwined it. I glared at our hands and then at him. "Are you in your right senses?"
"Anita, I admit I'm a selfish bastard! I was so busy in my education abroad that I didn't create time for you. At first, I wanted to give you space to focus on your exam..."
I cut in. "Oh really? That's a lie and you know it. You ignored me intentionally. Besides, I'm not important to you. I know that. You should know you are a nobody to me too".
"No! No! I still love you. I tried to suppress the feelings for years but when I saw you at the hospital late time, my feelings sprung up again. I want to prove my love to you. Please give me a second chance," he pleaded.
I sighed and turned my gaze to the ground.
"Your silence means yes....right?"
"No!" I snapped. "I'm mentally exhausted. Please...Just stop".
"There is no one that can love you like I do. Me and you are meant to be. I promise you that," he insisted.
I pulled my hand from his. "I don't care about what you have to say. We shall only have a professional relationship. Nice to meet you Doctor Stephen Okonkwo".
I stretched my hand to him for a handshake. He ignored it and pleaded, "Please, give me a second chance".
The image of Stephen came to my mind.
"I have a boyfriend," I stated, venom in my voice.
He smirked, "It doesn't mean you love him".
I glowered at him. How dare he....still look good with a smirk?
Then, it set in. "Did you just say I don't love him?" I snapped when his words echoed in my head. "You don't have the right to say that. I don't love you. Know that. I've moved on".
"It still doesn't mean you can't fall for me again. It doesn't mean your boyfriend is treating you well. It doesn't mean he loves you back," he said with a knowing smirk.
My fist were clenched and I gritted my teeth. I moved closer to him, making our faces inches away. He smiled and I sent an icy glare into his dark eyes. "I have moved on. Whatever you say doesn't matter. Your words mean nothing to me," I snarled.
I took some steps back. "Is that all you have to say to me, doctor Stephen?"
He let out a gloomy sigh and nodded. He went some steps away from the door and I walked out with my head held up high.
