Chapter 20. The Ruin Within
Abir spent the entire night enveloped in a fog of anguish and introspection. His mind was a maelstrom of conflicting thoughts, torn between his insatiable thirst for revenge and the profound love he harbored for Mishti. The vengeance he yearned for was slowly consuming him, yet his love for Mishti held him back from fully succumbing to the darkness. He was caught in an agonizing limbo, a battle raging between the past's vengeful ghosts and the luminous future he envisioned with her.
As night gave way to morning, the arrival of the new day only deepened their tragedy. Mishti awoke to find herself in bed, the memories of falling asleep by the window, her tears mingling with the moonlight, still fresh in her mind. She scanned the room and noticed Abir busily packing their belongings. His movements were methodical but heavy with an unspoken sorrow.
Worried, Mishti rose from the bed and approached him. Placing a gentle hand on his shoulder, she asked with a quiver in her voice, “Ab... Abir, what are you doing? Where are we going?”
Without meeting her gaze, Abir continued his task, his tone icy and detached. “We’re not going anywhere, Mishti. You are,” he said, his words like shards of ice piercing through her heart.
Mishti's breath hitched, her body trembling with shock and fear. “Wh... where?” she stammered, her voice barely above a whisper.
Abir finished packing her things and finally turned to face her. His expression was one of profound sadness and resolve. With trembling hands, he cupped her face, his touch tender despite the turmoil within him. He leaned in and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead, a tear slipping from his eye and landing on her cheek. Mishti’s own tears welled up, and she managed a faint smile through her sorrow.
Pressing their foreheads together, Abir whispered softly against her skin, “Angry chorni, you are my love, and I could never bear to hurt you. I can’t live without you, but on the other hand, I have my family—those I have lived for until now. If I stay with you, my conscience will be betrayed, and if I heed my conscience, my heart won’t allow it.”
Mishti’s brows furrowed in confusion and distress. “What are you trying to say, Abir?” she asked, her voice tinged with desperation.
Abruptly, Abir pulled away, causing Mishti to stumble slightly. A sharp pain shot through her abdomen, and she gasped in pain. Abir, hearing her cry, closed his eyes tightly, fighting back tears. Despite his efforts, a single tear slipped down his cheek, which he quickly wiped away before turning back to her.
"Samundar apni bebasi kisi se keh nahi sakta, milon tak fela hai magar beh nahi sakta," he quoted softly, his voice carrying the weight of his own helplessness.
He continued, his tone resolute but heavy with emotion, “What I mean is that this is as far as we go. From today, our paths diverge. If I stay with you, it would dishonor the oath I took on my parents' ashes. And if I were to harm you, my love would turn against me. Nan— Kunal will take you and your family to a safe place outside this country where you can live peacefully with your parents.”
Mishti stood there, her eyes brimming with tears, her heart breaking into a thousand pieces. A mix of emotions surged through her—anger, heartbreak, disbelief. With a powerful surge of emotion, she grabbed Abir’s hand and pulled him toward her with all her might, causing him to lower his head in shame.
“What... what did you just say? Are you telling me to leave? Am I a joke to you, Abir?” she demanded, her voice rising with each word, her pain palpable.
She continued, her voice louder and more desperate, “When there was passion, I was everything to you, and now that it has faded, you want me to disappear from your life?”
Abir closed his eyes, his heart aching with each word she spoke. “It’s not like that, Mishti. It’s not passion—it’s love. But I can no longer sustain it. I won’t harm your family, and my soul no longer allows me to love. I wanted to destroy Vishamber Maheshwari, but now... now I can’t bring myself to destroy you.”
Mishti chuckled bitterly, her heart breaking further. “Destroyed? How much more can you destroy me, Abir? What more is left?” she asked, her sarcasm biting through the pain.
She began clapping her hands slowly, moving around him with a mocking gait. “Oh, what a splendid loyalty you’ve shown, Abir Rajvansh. What a wonderful game, taking me away from myself, breaking me once again. No worries, don’t feel guilty—because the mistake was mine for trusting you again,” she said, wiping her tears away with trembling hands.
Her anger flared once more as she shouted, “You want me to leave your life? Fine, I’ll go. I’ll go so far that your cries, your tears won’t bring me back. I will never return to you!”
“Within myself, I will die,
Grief will never weigh me down,
We’ll smile through it all,
If you truly desire separation,
Whether it’s the heart you want or to part ways,
Tell me, what do you truly want from us?”
In her fury, Mishti began throwing things around the room, her sobs mingling with the chaos she created. Abir stood by the window, his back to her, unable to face the devastation. Amid the turmoil, Mishti knocked over a file containing important documents, scattering papers across the floor. Her gaze fell upon an abortion agreement, already signed by Abir. She picked up the paper, her hands trembling as she read the words.
The realization hit her like a tidal wave. The betrayal and the finality of Abir’s decision shattered her world. As she stared at the signed document, the full weight of Abir’s actions came crashing down on her, leaving her feeling utterly broken and abandoned.
Mishti broke down upon seeing the signed abortion papers. Her voice trembled with a mix of disbelief and anguish. “Ab... Abir, have you fallen so low that you want to end our baby’s life?” Her words, laced with pain, struck Abir with a jolt of shock.
With a voice dripping with hatred, Mishti continued, “Abir, I was angry with you before, but now I hate you. How dare you think you have the right to make decisions about my life and my baby? Am I just a toy for you, something you can use and discard at will? How could you even consider abortion? You don’t need me or our baby, but I need him. I will never terminate this pregnancy, do you hear me? Never!”
Abir, desperate to console her, began to explain, “Mishti, listen to me. The abortion is necessary—”
But he was interrupted by a call from Kunal. Abir answered, his voice firm and devoid of emotion. “Yes, the abortion will happen today. Take Mishti to the hospital and stay with her until the discharge. Afterward, bring her and her parents to the location I mentioned. Also, bring Vishamber Maheshwari and his wife. Mishti will leave with you,” he instructed, before ending the call abruptly. Mishti’s grief seemed boundless, her sorrow echoing in the room.
“Why, Abir? Why?” Mishti cried out, her voice breaking. “Was this all the love you had for me? Why did you leave me at this crossroads?”
Abir, holding her shoulders in an attempt to comfort her, pleaded, “Mishti, please, you don’t understand. This is necessary.”
But Mishti, fueled by anger, jerked away from him. “I don’t want to hear anything from you. You’ve done nothing but wrong. You tried to take my baby away from me. I will leave your life, but not because you told me to. I will never return to you,” she declared, her voice laden with bitterness. She turned to leave, but Abir, desperate, followed her.
“Mishti, please, listen to me,” he begged, his voice tinged with desperation.
Mishti stopped and turned, tears streaming down her face. “One last thing, Abir. After me, don’t ever break another woman’s heart like this. It tears her apart,” she said, knocking on her own chest, her voice filled with pain.
She began to open the door, her tears blurring her vision. Just then, Nishant entered, his smile menacing. Mishti froze, fear written all over her face. She took a step back, while Nishant advanced, leaving Abir paralyzed with indecision.
Nishant, with a sinister smile, sang mockingly, “On your way, you met the one you feared. How fitting, don’t you think, sweetheart?” He reached for her hand, but Mishti recoiled. Abir tried to pull her back, but she remained out of his grasp.
Mishti’s breath hitched as she took another step back, her body trembling with fear and confusion. Abir’s eyes darted between Mishti and Nishant, his mind racing to comprehend the sudden turn of events. The realization that he had been outmaneuvered by Nishant began to dawn on him, filling him with a sinking dread.
“Get out of here, Nishant,” Abir growled, his voice low and dangerous. “This is between me and Mishti. You have no place here.”
Nishant chuckled darkly, completely unbothered by Abir’s threat. “Oh, but I do, Abir. You see, this is exactly where I belong. I told you, didn’t I? I always get what I want. And now, Mishti is exactly where she’s supposed to be—right here, in my grasp.”
Mishti’s heart raced as she glanced at Abir, silently pleading for help. But Abir’s face was a mask of uncertainty, his earlier confidence evaporating in the face of this unexpected threat.
“Nishant, stay away from her,” Abir warned, his fists clenching at his sides. He took a step towards Mishti, ready to shield her from Nishant’s malice.
But Nishant’s sinister smile only widened. “Or what, Abir? You’ll do what exactly? You’ve already broken her spirit, haven’t you? What more could you possibly do to protect her now? You’ve taken everything from her—her dignity, her hope, her future.”
Mishti felt her knees weaken under the weight of Nishant’s words. The truth of his accusation pierced through her like a cold, unforgiving blade. She had placed her trust in Abir, only to have it shattered beyond repair.
Nishant moved closer, his eyes fixed on Mishti with a predatory gleam. “Don’t worry, Mishti,” he said in a mockingly soothing tone. “I’ll take good care of you. I’ve been waiting for this moment for so long, and now it’s finally here.”
Before Nishant could reach her, Abir intervened, his hand shooting out to block Nishant’s path. “Don’t touch her!” Abir snarled, his voice quaking with barely restrained fury. His entire body was taut, ready to spring into action to defend the woman he loved, despite the turmoil he had caused.
Nishant paused, his eyes narrowing at Abir. “What’s this, Abir? A sudden change of heart? You think you can save her now after all you’ve done? It’s too late for that. You’ve already lost her—forever.”
“I said don't come near her.”
“Fine Traitor”
Nishant, taking a seat on the sofa, grinned maliciously. “Mishti, Mishti... Mishti, you see, in this world, no one can love you more than I can. You think you’re betrayed? That’s nothing compared to what I have in store. Anyone who can betray me can betray you too. But don’t worry; I’ll make sure he gets his punishment,” he said, his voice dripping with malice.
Nishant forcefully grabbed Mishti’s hand, dragging her towards him. Mishti, terrified, struggled but was overpowered. Abir’s rage boiled over as he saw Nishant press the gun against Mishti’s face.
Nishant taunted, “Sweetheart, I hear you’re pregnant. It’s so sad. But don’t worry, I won’t take long to deal with your baby.” He gripped Mishti’s hair tightly, causing her to cry out in pain.
Abir’s eyes were bloodshot with fury as he shouted, “Nishant, let Mishti go!”
Nishant turned with anger in his eyes. “Lower your voice, traitor. I don’t talk to people who raise their voices at me.”
Nishant turned back to Mishti, his face twisted in rage. “How dare you think you can have this baby? You didn’t consider what I would do to you. I’ll go to your home, and both you and your baby will pay,” he threatened, shoving her away before turning towards Abir.
At that moment, Kunal burst through the door, his arrival offering a glimmer of hope. “Bhabhi, let’s go. Your mom and dad are on their way,” he said.
Nishant’s eyes widened as he saw Kunal and realized the situation. Abir seized the opportunity, shouting urgently, “Kunal, get Mishti out of here!”
Kunal, understanding the gravity of the situation, rushed to Mishti’s side. As he hurried to help her escape, Abir, paralyzed with rage and helplessness, watched as the chaos unfolded, praying for Mishti’s safety.
