28: Is this goodbye?.
Lailah Dk
It's been two days since I met my mum. I was so happy when I saw her. I couldn't believe the crazy Nailah was my twin sister all along. I felt really happy knowing this, my heart was at peace and It couldn't feel any better than this.
"Lailah, why don't you wanna follow us back to Canada? Please Lailah comes with us." Nailah said. I had come to spend the night with them.
"Nailah I can't leave, I need to stay here. But I promise I'll be safe. Nothing will happen to me. I promise" I held her hand.
"We just got you back and you want to leave so soon, that man is here and you said it yourself. He wants to kill you." She said. "Okay, why can't you leave?"
"I have a job in Niger. I have to attend to it, and also the king. Haidar I..." I mistakenly called Haidar's name absentmindedly. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have mentioned Haidar" I looked away from her eyes.
"It's okay. It's clear he has feelings for you and not me. Haidar would never slap a woman, and he slapped me. For you, He loves you." She said.
"No, he doesn't. It's just..." She cut me short.
"And from the way you are looking away from my eyes, I know you love him too." She chuckled.
"I don't, I just care about him," I said and she chuckled again.
"And that isn't love? You'll realize it soon, I assure you." She said.
"And you? don't you love him?" I asked.
"I did, He slapped me. I can't forget that" She said.
"I'm sorry about that, it was my fault," I said.
"It wasn't Lailah, it wasn't your fault he fell in love with you. You are very beautiful, nice and well any guy would crush on a cute military woman," she said and I chuckled. "I knew he had feelings for you when I came to visit the last time, I just thought I was insinuating it"
"He doesn't love me Nailah, I'm certain. He'll come back to you, I saw the say way he looked at you yesterday." I said.
"You saw nothing. It was just a look of pity in his eyes. Haidar doesn't have feelings for me anymore" She said. "It was all my fault though, I was refusing to marry him but I guess God didn't want us to be because you are his real wife. You'll marry him, I'm sure about that." She said. I burst into laughter.
"You are still as dramatic as I left you. Nailah nothing is ever going to work between me and Haidar. We fight every day, he doesn't fail to throw rude words my way. He's always grumpy," I smiled. All the memories of I and Haidar for the past six months made me laugh. It was funny most of the time. I didn't even know how we resolved our differences and started seeing eye to eye.
"You see you look happy speaking about him." She chuckled. "Let's forget about Haidar for now, the main thing is that you need to follow us to Canada. Please for our Late father's sake Lailah, we'll bring Salim with us as well. You need to come" She pleaded.
"Okay let's make this deal, I'll follow you to Canada but I'll only spend a year with you guys. I'll give my position in Niger to someone else for a year. Deal?" She asked.
"Of course, it's a sure deal. Maybe I'll speak to some of my connections over there and they'll get you into the Canadian army. How does that sound?" She asked. I smiled.
"Brilliant," I said and she smiled.
"I'll begin speaking to them so that we can stay in Canada forever." She hugged me tightly.
"Not forever darling. I'll come back to my country." I said and she chuckled. It was nice being with her, I couldn't be happier than to have found my sister.
"One last thing Nailah," I said, she broke the hug.
"Don't tell me you are having second thoughts." She raised her left eyebrow.
"No, you have to quit drugs Nailah."
I said. She seemed taken aback.
"Haidar told you?" she said.
"No, he didn't, I found out myself. I'm a military officer, I know when someone is on drugs" I said.
"I want to get myself into a rehabilitation center. I promise I'll stop" She said.
"That's good," I said. We chitchatted about much funny memory from our childhood. Finding my sister was the best thing in the world.
~*~
I wanted to spend the night with Nailah and my mum but I decided not to. I couldn't just leave Haidar without saying Goodbye. I just arrived at the palace, my three days with him were already over. Yeah, he said I should never come back here after that but there was no way I was going to leave without seeing him for the last time.
I parked my car in the parking lot and took calm strides towards his palace. I knocked on the door lightly when I got in front of it and Jamal opened it With a smile on his face.
"Hey Jamal, can I come in?" I smiled at him cheerfully as well.
"Sure, Madam." He saluted. I smiled at him. I knew Jamal from the NDA, he was my junior back then.
When I entered Into the house, the aura felt sad. I felt as though I was leaving something great behind. I turned to Jamal and asked. "Where is the king?"
"He is in his room," He said.
"Okay thank you," I said. I immediately took fast strides upstairs. His room was close to the stairs so I knocked lightly on his door when I got in front of it.
"What is it, Jamal?" He asked angrily from inside. I chuckled. I guess he hates every bodyguard of his. I still knocked though and the door roughly went open with him saying, "Jamal, I'm going to skin you alive." He said angrily but stopped in his track when his eyes met mine.
"You?. What are you doing here?" He asked instead.
"Uhm, I came to pack the remaining of my of stuff," I said.
"Oh, I see. I already got them thrown away. It was obvious you didn't need them anymore." He said.
"You did what? You threw away my belongings?" I asked. I was feigning anger.
"They looked worthless Lailah. What was I supposed to do with them? and Jamal needed the room, so." He said. He turned around and walked back into the room.
"Alright then, no problem. I'm leaving Nigeria tomorrow." I said.
"Safe journey," He said dryly. I decided to ignore his behavior.
"To Canada, I'm going to base there from now on," I said. He dropped the shirt he was fiddling with and turned to me.
"What about Niger?" He asked.
"I quit it. I want to get to know my sister more, I want to be close to my family." I said.
"Okay, that's good. Family matters a lot. Some people don't matter in this world you know, you can just leave them anytime you wish." He said.
"I'm sorry I didn't continue being your Bodyguard. It wasn't..." he cut me short angrily.
"You think this is about being a BODYGUARD? Do you think that's why I wanted you to stay? Because my life is in your hands or what?." He said angrily. His veins were showing on his temples. He was angry.
"Just get out of my house Lailah DK. Go" He pointed his index finger at the door.
"I just came to say goodbye for I'll be living tomorrow. I..." He cut me short again.
"I said get out of my house. GO AWAY TO YOUR STUPID CANADA." He yelled this time. I took in a deep breath and turned around to leave. I turned and looked at him one last time but he looked away.
I took calm strides towards the door, but paused outside, my heart heavy with emotion. Without turning back, I whispered, "Haidar, it was an honor working alongside you. I'll forever cherish the memories. Thank you, and your late father, for embracing me as family when I needed it most." My voice trembled.
I held my breath, hoping for a response. Instead, the door slammed shut, its echo piercing my soul. My heart skipped a beat, and tears welled up in my eyes.
