WHEN EVELINA AWOKE, GASPING THE FIRST THOUGHT that flew across her mind was confused. She didn't know where she was, she didn't know what had happened, and she didn't know why her head was pounding. Evelina hated not knowing. It made her feel scared.

A glaringly bright white ceiling startled her as she sat up, the metallic clink of potions' bottles surrounding her. Her breathing deepened, and the pain in her chest dulled when she realised where she was. What happened?

Arden's face came into view, a worry line etched into her forehead. "Are you okay? Where does it hurt? I'm sorry! I just-"

Evelina shook her head, placing her hand on Arden's shoulder in reassurance. "It's alright. My chest hurts a little, but... mostly, I'm confused. What the hell happened to me?"

Arden looked up. "You don't remember?"

"No, my head feels fuzzy when I try to think about it."

"Ms. Figgenblott," Arden called. "Evelina doesn't remember what happened. Is that worrying?"

"No; with the force of that curse, it's normal. Ms. Moreau," She said, turning to Evelina. "You were hit with a sectumsempra when you ran into the middle of an advanced duelling session."

"Alright, I suppose." Evelina's brows raised in curiosity. It didn't sound like something she would do.

When Ms. Figgenblott had walked away to tend to another student, Evelina asked Arden about it. "Hey, Mor, why does that story seem really unlikely?"

"Because it's not true," Arden sighed. "I'll tell you later."

"Okay, I guess. When do I get out of here?" She asked, leaning on her elbows. A wince escaped her as her ribs brushed each other in a way that made pain bloom in the area. A knowing glance from Arden and she lay back down.

"Soon, I hope. Maybe this evening." She replied.

Evelina fell dramatically back into bed.

"But that's so long!" She whined.

"I know, and I'm sorry," Her friend replied, eyes softening the slightest bit.

"Okay..." She sulked. Suddenly she perked up. "Hey, do you have cards?"

"Yeah, they're somewhere in here..." Arden trailed off, sorting through her rucksack. Evelina cast a silent Accio, and out came the cards, flying into her hands.

The two played their own version of blackjack until dusk arrived, the turrets outside casting long shadows over them. Arden looked up, and gasped.

"Wow, that was a while!" A breathy laugh escaped Evelina. "Guess it's time to go?"

"Yeah, let's go back and have a good sleep." Arden shot a pointed look at her. "You really beat me badly; you must have really been focused."

"Mor, you know I don't have to be focused to beat you." Ev laughed, nudging Arden. For some reason her friend was unnaturally stoic, gaze blank. Today had been full of fun, but Evelina knew the lilted laughs that came out of Arden's mouth were fake. She had enough practice with those. "What's wrong?"

Arden shook her head and let a small smile push itself onto her face. "Nothing- don't worry."

"Arden." Evelina stressed the syllables, looking at her fiercely. "What's wrong?"

"I just-" Arden furrowed her brows deeply and pushed the heels of her palms into the mattress. "What happened was my fault and I feel really bad."

"I'm sure it wasn't really my fault!" Evelina grinned.

"No, you don't get it!" A nurse turned to look at her questionably at her loud tone, and she smiled back sheepishly, her cheeks blushing a soft pink. "I'll tell you later."

"Fine." Evelina agreed, nodding her head.

The room slowly started to darken, lights flicking on one by one as the sun set behind the horizon. Just as Evelina's eyes started to close, Arden whispered into her ear.

"It's time, let's get out of here."

"Let's." Evelina mumbled, as a yawn threatened to escape her.

The pair stumbled along the halls back to their dorm.

"Hey, where were you?" A girl fussed, touching Arden's shoulder as they walked in. Her grey eyes glimmered with curiousity.

"It's fine Leanna- I was just escorting Evelina back from the infirmary." Arden paused, looking as though she'd forgotten something. "Right, Evelina, this is Leanna, one of our roommates, and Leanna, this is Evelina. She's new to this house."

Leanna's eyes widened as she brushed her hair back self consciously. "Wait; you're the Evelina Moreau?"

Evelina shrugged halfheartedly, to make herself seem embarrassed. "That happens to be my name."

"But- Wow- You-You're the only one to ever be sorted into the wrong house! You must be so perfect, if even the sorting that thought you should be in Hufflepuff when you're really a Slytherin!" She said enthusiastically.

"I guess..." Evelina trailed off. She yawned, this time a fake one, but it was convincing enough to get Leanna to step back quickly. "Thanks." She continued.

Arden, however, saw past it. "Tu la trouve ennuyeuse n'est-ce pas?" She mouthed.

"Oui." Evelina mouthed back. "Et je ne suis pas désolé."

A snicker escaped Arden's mouth at her reply, and as she rolled straight into bed, all Evelina could think about was how truly wonderful of a day had been.
