Last Door on the Left
It's short I know omg. But I still hope you guys enjoy!
"Lia, I assure you that I won't be experimenting on you. You don't have to worry." Dimitri and I were still standing at the beginning of the Experimentation Hall as I had refused to move any further after the first few steps.
"You don't have to worry, Lia. Nothing is going to happen to you," Dimitri said, training his eyes on me. His words were the same yet they had grown softer in tone, becoming soothing to my ears.
He walked towards me and I tensed, expecting him to grab me and pull me along with him. Or perhaps punish me for my hesitation. But instead, he stood beside me telling me that I would be fine again, walking when I started to.
It was a slow process, my body panicking the further we descended down the hall. I could feel it betraying me, going against what I was supposed to do, walking much too slowly. My muscles were bunching together, my brain racing. Although I could not explain the reasoning, my ears were ringing slightly. I knew there was no physical explanation for this, but it was all I could hear as I continued down the hall.
I had hoped we would stay near the beginning of the hall, entering one of the first rooms. It would be easier to leave, and I knew how this hall was designed as I had spent enough time in it.
At first, they started you off at the beginning of the hall. This was where the easier things were done. I had been given injections in these rooms while He had been told what to watch out for and what to expect. When the symptoms did not occur, it was determined I would not be terminated. Then, you were moved further down the hall.
It was at the end of the hall that horrible things happened. Every room was soundproofed but that did not stop me from hearing the endless screams, the painful wails. The further we walked down the hall, the louder they got, my own past screams echoing around me. It had been so long since I had been inside one of the room that I wondered whether I was exaggerating. He had always told me it was never that bad because the benefits far outweighed the costs.
But I had long ago realized that He did not always tell the truth.
My hope completely vanished as we reached the end of the hall, Dimitri stopping in front of the last door on the left. He turned and smiled at me, one that I did not return.
"Do you remember this room, Lia?" he asked, watching me.
I nodded, my stomach turning. "Yes, I can remember everything," I answered, my voice a whisper. This was the room that I was screamed in, had been experimented on in, and had wished for everything to stop. But my wishes never came true no matter how hard I wished.
"I know you have a perfect memory," he said, his smile growing. "There's an important experiment being done within this room right now. We've found a subject who's a likely candidate for the Red Virus. We're going to attempt letting him join the trial."
I frowned, not understanding. Why were they still running the trail? Both Varian and I had been marked as failures the moment we left the Lab. He had told me once that trials were usually stopped and closed after success stories turned into failed ones. Beyond the two of us failing, there were little to no subjects that could survive the Red Virus running through their system as Varian and I had.
"Is it the experiment that He is watching after?" I asked, curiously. She had replaced me and it was highly possible that she had taken my spot in the trial as well.
Dimitri shook his head. "No, Lia. We did try with her, and although she's identical to you in every sense, she wasn't able to take it as successfully as you had. However, we do plan to try with her again later in the future, seeing as she's still alive after the injection," he explained to me.
I could feel a sense of satisfaction. Despite all of my flaws, I was still superior to her. I was still more perfect than she could be, even with Him taking care of her.
"Are they male or female?" I asked him, wondering whether there was a higher chance of one sex accepting the virus than the other.
His eyes lit up at the question, conveying I was heading in the direction he had hoped. "Excellent question! This subject is a male. In fact, you're quite familiar with him already," he said, causing confusion. I knew many experiments but had never been on a familiar term with any. Had he simply chosen the incorrect word?
"Who is it?" I found myself asking, ignoring the growing dread that was alarming my body. It was me to run down the other end of the hall, back to my room. My room, the one with the blue door and familiar passcodes.
Dimitri turned, typing in a passcode quickly, the door sliding open. He then looked back at me, beckoning me closer. "Why don't you see for yourself?" My curiosity won over my caution as I leaned closer, inspecting the body lying on the table.
There was the boy who smiled endlessly and talked to me daily. There was the boy who had followed me when I left and who had protected me from Cowen. There lay Levi.
*For those of you still reading this book I do have a question. I plan to go back through His Experiment soon and go through a second round of edits. This will be posted on Wattpad when finished. HOWEVER, I was thinking about changing the tenses from first to second. Which do you think would fit both of these stories better? Any feedback would help, including on sloryline, characters, or anything haha.
