The Argument
I walk away from them, my father runs after me. I walk faster into an alleyway. Father catches up to me and spins me around.
" What!?" I say harshly. Father looks at me with a look of anger on his face.
" You won't marry than man, I forbid it," he says. I scoff.
" You forbid it?" I almost yell, " even it you forbid it, I could still elope with him,"
" Emily Alice Drake, I am your father, and you will do as I say!" He yells at me. Again, I scoff.
" Oh, you lost that right a long time ago," I glare at him. He says nothing, but he glares at me, but I continue to go on, " You want to know what's the funny thing? That when Erik is with a poor woman you praise him. But when I'm with a poor man I get criticised by you,"
Tears start to roll down my face. Father remains silent," So, you are just going to stay silent? Do you like Erik better? Am I that painful to look at after mother died? What did I do to make you hate me so much!?" I yell the last sentence. Father grabs me by the shoulders.
" I don't hate you, I love both you and Erik equally. I let out a slight chuckle.
" Me and you both know that is a lie," I say, " you never paid any attention to me, hell you didn't even know I could read until I was 10, 10! You didn't even believe me when I told you I could until I read you a whole paragraph from Homer's The Odyssey," father's face softens.
" Sweetheart, I'm sorry," he tries to touch my face, but I smack his hand away.
" Don't touch me," I say harshly," nothing you say or do will make me forgive you,"
" Emily, I love you, you know that right?" He tries to plead with me, but I just shake my head.
" The only person that truly loved me was mother," father stands there dumbfounded then he shakes his head and leaves me alone in the alleyway. I just walk around Lambeth, not wanting to go back to uncle's shop.
I walk around until I feel hands grad a hold of my waist. I turn around and see Jacob, he grins, I sigh.
" I'm not in the mood Jacob," I say," I just want to be left alone,"
" Well tough luck, I'm not leaving you here alone," he says, and he puts his arm around me, he looks at me, " You know I heard that whole argument, would you really elope with me?" He asks me, and I nod my head.
" Yes, I would elope with you, if it came to that," I weakly smile. He kisses my forehead. He grins and stops walking, he puts his arms around my waist, and I put my arms around his neck.
" You know we could get married now if we wanted to," he says like he is trying to hint something to me.
" Oh, really," I say.
" Yeah,..... would you like to get married tonight?"
