Last Chances
[Max's POV]
“You're not trying hard enough!”
I wined slamming my face back into her pillow “I am! I've been trying since day one!”
“You've called?”
“Yes” I muffled into the pillow
“You've gone round to his house?”
“Yes” I stated again, “He rejects my calls, ignores my texts, I cant leave anymore messages and when I go to his house he doesn't open his door or he slams it in my face” lifting my head up I scratched it warily. They both grimaced at my face like they have been doing everytime they saw me.
“You actually need to get some sleep Max or those bags and black circles won't go away”
“I don't care”
Serenity shook her head lightly, looking disappointed
“What?” I asked pouting
“It's just sad that it had to get this far before you realised”
“realised?”
Trinity who was working on her laptop suddenly stopped and turn around on her swivel chair “Don't let me put my foot in your mouth”
I sighed lying back down again, my eyes closed. “I love him”
“yes you do” Serenity replied
“It's about time you realised” Trinity continued “I mean we knew before you did”
I felt the tears escape my closed lids. I put my hands over my face as I sobbed into my hands “He hates me now”
“Come on Max don't cry again” Serenity cooed as she climbed onto the bed and lay next to me, wrapping her arms around my head. I felt another pair of arms wrap around my waist obviously Trinity.
“Have you tried speaking to him in school?” Trinity asked
“I never see him around in my lessons anymore”
Trinity sighed “Max, I don't know...maybe...” she sighed again
“What?” dreading what she was going to say
“Maybe” Serenity picked up “Maybe he's moved on”
I didn't say anything the feeling of depression washed through me “He doesn't love me anymore” I wasn't sure if that was a statement or a question
“Love isn't something that disappears in a short space of time, if he loved you then he still does, but he's making it clear he doesn't want to talk to you” Serenity responded running her slender fingers through my hair
“And it has been three weeks Max, he's not letting up, maybe you should move on?”
“I don't want too” I cried “I want him, I love him” I mentally kicked my self for not saying this sooner to him “I can't give up now”
“Well if you're not giving up, we'll always be supporting you” we all sat up, Serenity placing her thumbs right in the corner of my eyes, wiping my tears away in one solid movement “there are things you need to do first”
“Right” I nodded weakly, feeling weirdly refreshed by the new found positivity
“One” Serenity started placing her index finger in front of my face “You need to find out where exactly Erick is when he is supposed to be in your lessons ”
“Two” Trinity continued “You need to sort your friend Darren out or I will. Its either friends or nothing” I nodded feeling slightly nervous about that
“No that's not two Trinity, these are steps to try and win Erick back” Serenity tutted “That's just something you have to do whenever you have time Max”
Trinity rolled her eyes “I just want him to get rid of Darren, that kid has ruined everything”
Serenity let out a soft chuckle “Two” Serenity stated putting her attention back to me “You need to tell Erick how you feel, exactly how you feel, then you can apologise. Seek and Tell”
“That's if I can get close enough”
“Don't worry Max, we have the up most faith in you” she looked up at her clock “Come on we need to leave now if we don't want to be late”
….....................................................
After a smooth journey to school we arrived pretty early. Stumbling out of the yellow Jeep, I looked out for Erick, his car was here but there was no sign of him.
Serenity and Trinity jumped out as well, “remember what you have to do Max?” Serenity asked
“Yes” I nodded “Seek and tell”
“Ok Well-”
“Hey Max” Serenity was interrupted by Katie, who was smiling clinging onto her books, taking full notice of Serenity and Trinity
“Hey Katie”
she tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear before continuing “Are you going to the library now?”
“Erm...No probably not...why?”
“Oh just asking you know, I went there every morning hoping you'll come” she laughed nervously
“Oh” I chuckled nervously “Sorry, I've just been really busy lately”
she smiled glancing at the twins again “Are they new?” she asked pointing to them
“Oh ,no these are my friends, Serenity and Trinity, they're my ride till my arm is out of this cast”
a sign of relief washed over Katie's face as she processed this “Right, right I see. I'll see you at lunch then?”
“Sure, I guess” She waved at me before walking away smiling to herself
“Jesus Christ, can someone say desperate and completely pointless?” Trinity scoffed rolling her eyes “Does everyone have a crush on you Max?” she asked still narrowing her eyes at Katie. Serenity giggled
my eyes widen in shock “W-What?, Katie is my friend, I hardly even talk to her”
“Right” Trinity nodded her voice loaded with sarcasm
Serenity patted my back “We have to get going to school, good luck” we had a three way hug before they both climbed back into the car and I, making my way into school. I had English first and I knew for a fact Erick was in my class.
All I have to do is follow those two simple steps. Seek and tell
….........................................................
“And Andrew Williams?”
“Here Miss”
What the hell? She didn't even call out Erick's name. I looked over to where Erick usually sits but it was taken by a kid I didn't know. I sighed this was going to be harder than I thought.
…..........................
Why must everything 10 times harder than it has to be. I walked to the receptionist's desk as soon as the bell rung. She was typing away on her computer. I cleared my throat so I could get her attention
“Oh hello there” she smiled
“Hi”
“Maxwell right? How are you?”
“I'm fine thank you” I smiled for the first time in 3 weeks
“Clearly not, how can I help you? Are you sick? Want me to call home?”
“No no, nothing like that” I sighed “You're in charge of the timetables right?” I asked
she glanced at me suspiciously over her thick lensed glasses “Yes...why?”
“I need to know something?”
“What is it cutie?” she readied her fingers at her keyboard.
“Uhm...Erick Carter? He's not in my English class anymore or my Maths class or any of my classes in fact”
The receptionist sighed rolling her eyes “Darling I don't even need to tap on my computer to tell you why. One day the Principal comes walking in here with Erick Carter asking to change all his whole timetable” she grunted slightly clearly annoyed “I mean you can't just walk in here asking for a whole timetable change you know!? A few subjects okay maybe, but a whole timetable? Do you know how many students I had to switch around for that kid? Did I even get an explanation? Nope. All I know was he was having problems with another male student”
So he's purposely avoiding me.
Nice.
She sighed pushing her glasses up. “But you know: whatever Erick Carter wants, Erick Carter gets.” I nodded sadly agreeing with her “it was History I just couldn't change for him, kid got extremely pissed, so now he comes in extra early on Thursdays and Fridays for an hour with Mrs Kay just to avoid being in the classroom” I felt my eyes prick, I blinked quickly to avoid the tears that wanted to come through.
“This must be really serious”
“huh?” I asked, shaken from my thoughts
“I mean normally Erick is sitting outside my office or the principals for beating up a kid he has a problem with not avoiding them. He must really hate this kid to go to such extents. Do you have any idea who the student is?” she asked her eyes hungry for information
“Me” I whispered. I walked away not even staying long enough to look at her reaction. My lip trembled slightly as I made my way out of the school's front doors. Running quickly behind the school, I gasped at the sight in front of me.
She giggled moaning his name as she threw her head back against the wall. His hands up her shirt, her skirt hitched up, his belt unbuckled, her hands in his hair, his head buried in her neck.
They both quickly turned to face me, all of us with equal expressions
shock.
Well I guess its safe to say I've completed step one. I've found him
and now I can leave.
But my feet refused to. My hands clutched harder onto the straps of my rucksack, begging my body to run away but yet I still stood there my mouth hanging open my eyes seeping water, my nose sniffing, my breathing silently out of control,
my heart racing and breaking into tiny pieces.
“Are you like a pervert or something!? Get lost!” the girl flipped her blonde hair behind her shoulder pulling her skirt down
I should probably do that- leave. Stop torturing myself more than I am doing now.
Erick slowly removed his hands from underneath her shirt shoving his hands into his jeans pockets. The shock on his face now looked like guilt. Well I hope it was, I wasn't sure, my vision was badly affected with my tears. Erick sighed and looked away-
away from me.
“I-I'm sorry” I croaked my eyes locked on the back of my head
“Whatever” she sneered “Just go away”
“Okay” I tried my hardest to move my feet, but they refused. Probably because they know if I walk away Erick's hands will be all over that girl again.
Time for step two.
“E-Erick can I talk to you?” I sniffed
He turned slowly to face me, he looked angry now, annoyed and frustrated all in one.
“Didn't you hear what Sarah said? She wants you to go away. Now”
“But I wan- need to talk to you”
“I don't care” he was getting more annoyed
“I-”
“Just go away Max, Darren's probably getting worried” he narrowed his eyes at me distastefully before looking away again.
No matter what I said now it wasn't going to change anything and there was no way I was going to blurt out my feelings in front of this girl. If he really wanted to make this work he would of given me a chance but he didn't. I nodded finally managing to walk away.
For good.
[Erick's POV]
“My names Sasha by the way”
“What?”
“You called me Sarah, my name's Sasha”
“Oh...I'm sorry” the tanned girl wrapped her slender arms around my neck and kissed me softly. A kiss I couldn't bring myself to respond too.
“What's the matter, you're not in the mood anymore?”
I gently removed her arms from around my neck “No, I don't feel well all of a sudden” I dragged my feet away from her and back into the school building.
Why did I feel so bad?
I haven't done anything wrong.
My mind keeps flashing back to those minutes ago.
I'm not in a relationship with him anymore.
So why do I wish he did not just see that?
He cheated on me.
So why do I feel guilty too?
And he is no longer worth any of my time.
So why do I feel like I should of listened?
I walked through the empty corridors, trying not to slam my head into the lockers. I knew avoiding him was a good idea. Look at the pathetic mess I am now.
“Hey you” I looked over it was the receptionist beckoning me over
“Yes” I said in a monotonous voice
“What have you got against poor little Max? Kid came here looking all distraught wondering why you weren't in his lessons anymore”
Was everyone trying to make me feel bad? I knew breaking up with him was going to be hard, I just didn't realise it was going to be painful.
But I needed to move on
For good.
[4 months later]
[Erick's POV]
The bell rang and I quickly rushed out of my seat, it was lunch time but I wasn't eating. I was meeting my 'girlfriend' of the week Jessica by the girls toilets. The hall way started to get more and more crowded as people rushed to get their lunch but it was going to get empty soon. One of the classroom doors opens and out comes Max with Darren walking behind him. I ignored the tight feeling in my chest like I always got whenever I saw his face and sped off completely ignoring their existence.
“Erick!”
I turn around to see Mrs Kay beckoning me over with her hand. I looked in the direction where I was supposed to be going and sighed. I could have easily walked away but she is coming into school early for me so I don't have to be in the class.
“Yes Miss?” I ask impatiently but I try not to sound too rude.
“I won't be able to teach you tomorrow morning so you're going to have to come to my lesson last period”
my eyes opened with surprise and dread “I can't miss, absolutely no way” there was no way, I was going to sit in that lesson not with Max's desk right next to mine
“Erick, I'm not going to have you walk around the school during my lesson because you have a problem with another student. Do me a favour for once”
I groaned “fine” its been four months and I haven't spoken to him since. Things will be fine.
…...........................
[Darren's POV]
“So we know thanks to Henry Ford and mass production, America thrived extremely well in the 1920s but can someone give me another reason why America did so well?” Mrs Kay scanned the classroom searching for her next victim.
My next victim was going to be Erick,
what the hell was he doing here?
I watched Max get fidgety and nervous over his presence, his face red. I watched how he tried his best to focus on the board but his eyes would somehow always drift back on to Erick.
4 months and it's obvious Max still wants him
4 months of me trying to get closer to him
A complete waste of time.
I sighed in my seat.
I just need to try harder.
Mrs Kay locked her eyes on me but before she could call my name there was a knock on the classroom door.
“Come in” Mrs Kay shouts sitting at her desk
Amanda and Casey comes strolling in with clipboards in their hands.
“We have a short announcement Miss” Amanda smiled
“Make sure it's quick” she sighed sorting out her papers
“Alright, so as you know me and Casey are in charge of the dance committee and the final date, theme and venue for this years summer dance have been decided.
The class broke out into a chaos of excited whispers and cheers
Casey brought her fingers to her lips and whistled, the whole class dropped silent “Thank you. Last year the theme was beach party and we had it at the wonderful 5 star Queen Beach Hotel thanks to Erick” The class clapped and cheered and began gossiping again guessing what this years theme would be and where it will be held
I felt a small tap on my arm turning to my right it was Max who was leant over, his face full of confusion
“Darren, what is this Summer Dance?” I looked at him in surprise but then I remembered that Max only came in September, so this would be his first
I leant in closer “The School holds a dance every summer at these extravagant Hotels, the students come to the Hotel the night before which has always been on a Friday and we stay in the rooms that have been assigned to us, and then the dance is always on the next night. After the dance is finished we can leave anytime on Sunday. Everything is paid for by Erick”
His mouth opened in a small 'o' shape “Students get a room each? Theres like...so many of us”
I chuckled “No, there has to be a minimum of 2 in a room and a maximum of six. Girls and boys are not allowed to mix in the rooms and you can't bring your own dates”
Max nodded “Wow”
I glanced over Max's shoulder randomly to find Erick staring at him sadly
“Do you want to a share room?”
Max thought about it “You think that's a good idea?” his face unsure
I hid the hurt I felt “I won't do anything, I'm only asking as a friend”
Max nodded a grin on his face “Okay then sure”
“Great” I smiled, I glanced back at Erick who was now staring at Casey and Amanda looking extremely pissed. The class went silent again to listen to the rest of the girls' announcement
“This year theme is” Amanda grinned
“Black tie!” Amanda and Casey laughed
The reaction in the room was positive, Last year some people had problems with the whole Beach Party theme
“And where having it at The four Seasons” The class went into a frenzy or shrieks, screams and high 5s
“Lastly” Amanda began “The date is the 19th June”
The 19th June?
“Isn't that your birthday?” I whispered quietly into Max's ear
“It's your birthday!?” Amanda gasped
Whoops.
Guess not quietly enough.
Max nodded, blushing a little
“Oh my gosh then we most definitely have to get a cake!” Amanda scribbled furiously onto her notepad
“We should totally dedicate the end of the night to him as well” Casey suggested leaning over Amanda's clipboard
“Definitely!” she grinned
“You seriously don't have to do that” Max protested politely
“Nonsense” Amanda dismissed him with the wave of her hand “Now remember guys write on a piece of paper who you want to share a room with and hand it to anyone on the dance committee by the end of this week, all those who don't will be partnered up with someone by us” with that the two girls skipped out of the room.
This was going to be my last chance to get Max to love me.
….................................................................
[Max's POV]
“Oooh! So what are you going to where!?” Trinity giggled as we jumped out of the car and walked up to my house
“Probably a tuxedo”
“Nice!” Trinity winked giving me a thumbs up
I fumbled around in my bag looking for my keys
“Are you sure you want to share a room with Darren?” Serenity asked, her voice full of doubt
“I have no one else to share with, I don't really talk to anyone else and besides Darren said he wasn't going to do anything” pulling out my keys from the bottom of my bag, I unlocked the front door. We stepped in and headed for the kitchen.
As we all took a seat on a stool Serenity smiled nonchalantly “This year is going by so quickly”
“I know right in a couple of weeks it's going to be the summer holidays...” Trinity continued
“And then college” Serenity finished
“And I'm never going to see Erick again” I mumbled quietly, so quietly I'm not even sure if the girls heard me
“There's still a chance for you two, you know? I know it's been long but who knows” Serenity responded
I smiled sadly “It's too late, he's moved on” I thought about all the girls he's always with in the corridors.
How happy he looked
“You know Max, he still doesn't know how you feel, maybe that's all he needs”
“I don't think so somehow”
“What's the worst that could happen?”
“He'll completely reject me like he did last time I tried talking to him”
Trinity sighed frustrated “Max you never see him in school anymore, this dance could be your last chance!” hope danced in her eyes
And hope rushed through my body
“You're right”
This was my last chance.
