Difficult Truth.
"Me? What have I done?" I ask Jane in complete disbelief.
Jake frowns deeply before glancing between Jane and I.
"What does this have to do with you cheating on Tobias?" Jake questions her with a hard edge to his voice. Jane glares back at him before her eyes flash with hurt.
"Tobias doesn't want me, okay? I'm moving on," Jane says before leaning further into Dylan.
My eyes practically bulge out of my head. What happened between Tobias and Jane to drive her to this decision? What does it have to do with me? None of this is making sense.
"Why didn't you break up with Tobias instead of cheating on him? This is going to crush him," I tell her. Jane's eyes snap in my direction before blazing with anger.
"I'm not talking to you! Don't act stupid... You know exactly what you've done!"
She yells before flinging out her arms with emotion. I step back and narrowly avoid missing her palm by an inch. Wow, is this the real Jane? She's kind of crazy. How did I not see this before? Jake immediately steps in front of me and his voice lowers to a dangerous tone. His first instinct will always be to protect me.
"Step back, Jane."
Jane's eyes grow cloudy with uncertainty and her new lover steps forward to defend her. He grabs onto Jake's arm in an attempt to move him away from Jane. Jake immediately stiffens and stares down at Dylan's hand like it's scorching fire on his skin.
"You have a second to talk your fucking hands off me," Jake warns Dylan.
He immediately drops his hand and regret flashes across his face. His confidence begins to crumble to the ground when he drinks in the anger radiating from Jake's presence.
"I don't want you to hurt her!" Dylan cries out.
Jake scoffs before rolling his eyes.
"Run along, Dylan. I have no business with you," Jake says quietly.
Dylan glances between Jake and Jane before deciding she isn't worth it. He turns around and begins running down the street faster than the wind. I snigger with amusement.
"Nice replacement you've found yourself," I joke with frustration.
She replaced Tobias with Dylan? The whole scenario is insane to me. Jane glares at me from under her lashes.
"Shut up, Emily. You don't know what you're talking about."
There goes the hatred for me again... What have I done? I stare back at her in confusion as I try to remember a time I may have accidentally hurt Jane. I've always been welcoming and kind to her. I've always tried to make her feel part of the family.
"I don't understand what's going on here," Jake says quietly.
Jane holds her hands up in desperation and her eyes begin to fill with tears.
"I was scared to break up with Tobias, okay?! I couldn't do it!" Jane yells out.
I fold my arms across my chest because that isn't an excuse.
"So you chose to cheat on him instead? Great move," I mutter.
"This is all your fault, Emily!"
She points an accusing finger at me and I stumble back with shock.
"W-what have I done?" I question her quietly.
Jane's eyes blaze with hurt, fury and jealousy. Her lip curls up with disapproval. When she speaks, her response causes Jake and I to freeze in place with shock.
"Isn't it obvious? Tobias is in love with you!"
A tense silence surrounds us. I blink several times before glancing over at Jake. His face is unreadable and he appears to be suffering from shock.
"What did you just say?" Jake asks Jane to repeat herself.
I wince because deep down, I had a feeling Tobias had feelings for me... I thought he was over them. I didn't realize it would eventually interfere with his relationship with Jane. This is really not good.
"It's obvious. I don't know how you didn't see it sooner, Jake. Your cousin is in love with your girlfriend,"
I pinch the bridge of my nose.
"Okay, you can stop talking now, Jane." I mutter under my breath.
She throws me a final icy glare before heading off in the direction Dylan disappeared. I watch her leave until she's a speck in the distance. The entire time, Jake is worryingly silent. I slowly turn my head to look at him.
"Jake?" I call his name in hopes to snap him out of his shock.
Jake releases a deep exhale and his chest rises and falls with every breath he takes. He spins around before storming back toward his car. I stare after him as dread begins to consume me. I've never seen him look so eerily calm. Jake pulls open the passenger door for me before storming around and sliding into the driver's seat. I hear him yelling across the road.
"Get in the car, Emily."
As soon as I'm inside the car, Jake steps on the gas pedal and it lurches forward. He zooms through the streets while staring straight ahead. My palms grow clammy due to the tense atmosphere. Do I have enough time to warn Tobias of the hurricane about to emit? It took so long for Jake and Tobias' relationship to evolve. They went from fighting constantly to tolerating each other and bonding once again. One statement is all it takes for months of hard work to come tumbling down to the ground.
"Jane could be lying to cover up her actions," I say quietly.
He doesn't say anything but I feel the car speed up further as Jake puts his foot down on the pedal.
"I won't let him do this to me again, Wentworth. Jane has no reason to lie," Jake finally responds.
His voice is blunt, short and lined with a hard edge. I wince because I've heard that tone before... He's angry and Tobias is about to be on the receiving end of his anger.
"She could be lying to divert the attention away from her cheating scandal," I tell Jake.
He grunts in response but doesn't appear to be acknowledging my words. Jake barely parks the car before he kills the engine and darts out of his seat. I remove my seatbelt and scurry after him. He charges up the driveway, pulls open the door before yelling throughout the house.
"Where is Tobias?" Jake calls out while searching every room downstairs.
He's filled with anger and adrenaline. Every door is pushed open and slammed into the wall opposite.
"Tobias?!" Jake screams out for him.
The kitchen door opens and Myra appears holding a mug of tea. Her eyes grow wide when she finds her nephew storming through the house screaming to find her son.
"What is going on?" She asks firmly to Jake and I.
I open my mouth to speak but I don't know where to start. How do I tell her Tobias has been accused of being in love with me? It sounds ridiculous.
She narrowly avoids Jake bulldozing straight into her as he searches the kitchen for any sign of Tobias. She stumbles to the side and places a hand over her chest with surprise. When he doesn't find him, Jake releases a loud groan of frustration. He storms toward Myra before placing a hand on either side of her face. He leans down and presses a quick kiss to her forehead.
"I'm sorry, Aunt Myra. I didn't mean to shove you."
Jake mutters before whirling around and tilting his head back to scream up the stairs.
"Tobias! Get down here!"
Myra's eyes remain large with bewilderment and I shrink into myself with discomfort. I hope Tobias isn't home right now. It'll give Jake a chance to calm down before he confronts him. To my disappointment, I hear footsteps upstairs before Tobias appears at the top of the stairs. His dark hair is disheveled, his white t-shirt is creased and he's wearing gray low swung jogging bottoms. He runs a hand through his hair before yawning.
"What have I done now?" Tobias calls down the stairs.
He sounds like he's just woken and now he's going to be faced with a living nightmare. Jake stands at the bottom of the stairs and stares up at his cousin with a murderous look.
"I've just been speaking to Jane," Jake says to Tobias.
His chest moves erratically and he struggles to speak due to the raging adrenaline flowing through his body. His hands tighten into fists by his side. Jake's words peak Tobias' interest.
"Really? Where? I haven't spoken to her in a while," Tobias says before walking down a few steps.
He pauses with caution before scanning Jake's posture.
"You're going to hit me, aren't you?" Tobias says with his dark eyes full of suspicion.
I'm impressed at his ability to read Jake so well.
"It depends what your answer is," Jake hits back at him.
Tobias' face scrunches up with confusion.
"My answer to what?"
Jake stares at his cousin for several long seconds, almost as if he doesn't know where to start. He inhales a sharp breath to keep himself calm, but I don't think it's helping.
"Jane is breaking up with you." Jake says bluntly.
Tobias' head draws back instantly and his mouth falls open with disbelief.
"What!? Why are you telling me this and not Jane?" Tobias yells before storming down the rest of the stairs.
I immediately place myself between the two boys because I know this isn't going to end well. It seems like this is the first time Tobias is hearing about the break up. His reaction only confuses me further... Why does Jane believe Tobias is in love with me? What has she seen or heard?
"Get out of the way, Emily." Jake mutters quietly.
I shake my head and keep a firm hand on his chest to keep him a safe distance away from Tobias.
"No way. I'm not going to stand here and let you two rip holes into each other."
My words cause Tobias to splutter with shock. His hand finds its way to the strands of his hair.
"What the fuck is going on? Jake wants to hit me because Jane broke up with me?" Tobias yells in disbelief. "What kind of messed up family is this?" Tobias adds.
I turn around to look at Tobias while keeping Jake firmly away from him.
"Look, Tobias. I have to ask you a question and I need you to answer honestly. Okay?"
Tobias glances between me and Jake with an uncertain look.
"Okay... Go on? What's the question?"
I take a moment to gather myself before I speak. The words sound ridiculous coming out of my mouth.
"Jane is breaking up with you because she thinks you're in love with me," I say the words quickly and hope Tobias is immediately going to shut me down.
Jake stares at his cousin to gauge his reaction. Myra watches on silently as I drop the bombshell.
My heart thuds ferociously inside my chest as I wait for him to tell me I'm ridiculous. I wait for him to tell me Jane's accusation is an outrageous lie. There's no way he's in love with me after he almost abolished his relationship with Jake after sleeping with Violet. I need him to reassure Jake he would never betray him like that again and he's learnt his lesson. I don't expect Tobias to freeze in place, fall silent and stare at me with a blank look on his face. The color drains from his already pale cheeks and a look of guilt flashes across his eyes. I close my eyes for a brief second. Guilt is not what I wanted to see in his expression...
Guilt means Jane is right. Tobias is in love with me.
