Cheater.
I storm toward Violet until our bodies are inches apart. Violet glares back at me with the same intensity.
"What do I have to do to make you crawl back under the rock you came out from?" I spit the words out at her with sheer frustration. I'm so over dealing with Violet and her obsessive need to steal my man.
"You won't get rid of me. Jake wants me, Emily. You can't stop this from happening," Violet hits back at me.
My hands tighten into fists by my side. Behind me, Jake releases a frustrated groan.
"I don't want you, Violet! How many times do I have to tell you? I've moved on."
Violet doesn't listen to a word he says. It's almost like she has selective hearing. She leans in until her breath hits my cheeks.
"You're just temporary until he figures out how much he's missed me."
She spits out the words with venom. Before I know it, my hand is flying back and I slap her cheek with force. Violet's head turns to the right and her cheek begins to grow beetroot red from my slap. Jake immediately lunges forward and grabs hold of me.
"Woah, Emily. You should not be doing this right now," he yells before yanking me into his chest.
His head drops down until his lips align with my ear.
"Think of the baby. She isn't worth it," Jake tells me.
I can't remove the picture of her kissing him from my mind. I pull out of Jake's embrace before storming toward Violet for a second time. She's recovered from the slap and fresh anger brews inside her green eyes.
"You bitch! I can't believe you slapped me!"
"I'm not scared of you, Violet. You don't intimidate me in the slightest," I yell back at her.
She tries to lunge for me but Jake steps in between us. He whirls around before staring down at Violet with fire in his eyes.
"Back off, Violet! I do not want you. I don't ever want to see you. I don't ever want to speak to you. Leave town again for all I care. Just back the fuck off!" Jake screams at her.
Violet's face turns shades paler and she stumbles back with hurt flashing through her eyes. I glare at her with my chest rising and falling due to the adrenaline. For a brief moment, I figure she finally gets the message. Violet glares between Jake and I before her eyes fill with fake tears.
"You don't mean that! What we had was special, Jake. You know it."
I scoff in complete disbelief. Is she serious? What happened to her to make her this delusional? Jake appears to be staring at her with the same shock and disbelief. When Violet doesn't get a reaction, she whirls around and stomps off in the opposite direction. My shoulders slump in relief due to her departure. Jake presses his palms into his eyes while taking several deep breaths.
"What the fuck just happened?" Jake says out loud.
Instead of responding, I turn my back on him and begin walking away.
"Emily!" Jake calls out after me. He begins running before his hand wraps around my arm and he stops me in my tracks. Before I turn around, my eyes flutter closed and I take a deep breath. It's difficult to subside the swarm of anger and frustration swirling inside me.
"Why were you talking to her alone out here, Jake? You know she's trying to get you back. You know she's trying to break us apart." I whisper quietly.
Jake pulls me toward him until I hit his hard chest. His arms envelope me from behind and he rests his chin on my shoulder.
"I'm sorry. That couldn't have been easy for you. I was only out here because she wanted to talk and I thought I could finally get through to her. I didn't know she would try and kiss me otherwise I never would have entertained her offer to talk," Jake says down my ear.
I soften inside his hold and release the breath I'm holding. All of my anger and frustration should be toward Violet... Not Jake. He didn't do anything wrong.
"Do you forgive me?" Jake asks quietly before turning me around. He winces when he notices the hurt look in my eyes.
"I'll forgive you if you buy me two portions of greasy fries," I mutter under my breath.
Jake's lips twitch with amusement and he wraps his fingers around my chin before leaning closer. His warm breath hits my lips.
"It's a deal," he whispers before inching closer to kiss me. Before his lips meet mine, I reach up and wipe my fingers over his lips. He looks at me with a questionable expression.
"I'm wiping the remnants of Violet away. There is no way I'm kissing you after the snake has left her germs behind," I shudder.
Jake laughs and his chest vibrates against mine.
"God, I love you."
I loop my arms around the back of his neck before smiling up at him.
"I love you," I say before inching closer. His lips meet mine in a slow kiss and I sigh against him with delight. Jake's hands slip under my shirt and he caresses my bare skin with his rough fingers. His hand spreads across the front of my stomach and he deepens the kiss with a brush of his tongue. I greet his kiss with the same intensity and it feels good knowing he doesn't push me away. I'm the one Jake wants... Not Violet. When he pulls away, he rests his forehead against mine before searching my eyes.
"That slap was badass, Wentworth. Who is this new version of you? I'm yet to meet her," Jake grins at me with his usual heart-stopping smile. I grin back at him before shrugging.
"You learn a thing or two living with the Melvin's. I won't allow anyone to walk all over me again."
His blue eyes fill with pride. He pulls me tightly against his body before dipping his head low for a second kiss.
"Is it weird if that turned me on?" Jake whispers before kissing me again. I laugh against his lips before nodding my head.
"Yep, definitely weird."
My stomach ruins the moment by gurgling loudly.
"Your wish for fries is my command, Miss Wentworth."
Jake takes a step back before doing his best version of a courtesy. I beam from ear to ear before slipping my hand through the crook of his elbow. I could get used to the Princess treatment.
*
Jake orders me a burger combo with an extra portion of fries. He drops the food in my lap and I release a gasp of excitement. I've been craving fries all day. I reach for a fry before popping it into my mouth. A groan of delight leaves me.
"Oh my god, this is better than sex," I say before diving in for more.
Jake grins in my direction while driving home.
"There is no way those fries are better than having sex with me."
I grab a fry before popping it into his mouth. His brows raise with surprise as he chews.
"Okay... I see where you're coming from," he laughs.
I take a huge bite of the burger before leaning back in my seat to savor it. My eyes close as I enjoy the moment.
"Can I have a bite?" Jake asks me.
I open one eye before glaring at him. "No way. I love you, but I love the burger more."
He fondly shakes his head before stopping at a red light. He takes the opportunity to lean over and kiss me with passion. When he pulls away, his blue eyes are hooded over with arousal.
"You taste like burger and chips," Jake murmurs.
"Yum, lucky you," I whisper back at him.
The light changes and Jake reluctantly tears his eyes off me before turning his attention to the road. I stare out of the window as I make my way through the burger and fries. Satisfying my pregnancy craving is the best feeling in the world. My eyes land on a familiar face and I sit up straighter in my seat.
"Is that Jane?"
Jake slows down before nodding his head.
"Yeah, that looks like her. What is she doing out here alone? It's late."
I gesture for him to pull up on the side of the road. Maybe she needs a ride. She's leaning against a wall while scrolling through her phone. Just as I'm unfastening my seatbelt, I notice a male figure walking toward her from across the road. Jake immediately stiffens beside me and switches into protective mode within a split second. We both watch as Jane lifts her head and smiles sweetly at the guy approaching her.
"Oh. Who is that?" I ask quietly, feeling uneasiness stir in my guts.
I can't help replaying the conversation Tobias had with me a few days earlier. He was worried Jane was cheating on him.
"That's not Tobias," Jake says as his hand tightens around the steering wheel.
"It could be a friend," I murmur in response while searching through my phone for Tobias' contact.
Maybe I should call him. Jake turns to look at me with darkness brewing in his eyes.
"Do friends kiss like that?"
I gasp before snapping my head up to look at Jane. Sure enough, her arms are wrapped around the mystery boy and she's kissing him like she's scared to let go. My heart drops to the pit of my stomach.
"Oh my god, Tobias was right. She is cheating on him."
Jake curses under his breath before removing his seatbelt. He flings open the driver's door before climbing out of his car. I place my food aside before following after him. My heart hammers and I feel sadness consume me for Tobias' sake. How could Jane cheat on him? He's so good to her. Jake storms toward Jane with his shoulders rolled back and anger radiating from his body.
"Are you going to introduce me to your friend, Jane?" Jake yells out toward her.
Jane stiffens and immediately pulls away from her mystery lover. Her eyes grow wide with shock and she stares between me and Jake with a look of guilt on her face. Her mystery boy watches Jake with fear. When Jake approaches, he takes an uncertain step forward and attempts to make himself taller by standing up straight. Jake pauses before glaring down at him with disgust.
"You're not scaring anyone, buddy. Get off your tiptoes."
The guy's cheeks begin to turn purple with embarrassment. Jake looks furious as he glares at Jane and her mystery lover. I step forward and place a hand on Jake's arm to remind him to stay calm. I know he's angry for Tobias, but I don't want him to do something he's going to regret later. He's come a long way from committing crimes for Amil, his former boss. He's finally on the right path and I don't want anything or anyone to lead him off it. Jake's body relaxes for a split second and he turns to give me a brief nod.
"Well, Jane. Aren't you going to say anything?"
I question her with a raise of my brow. To my complete surprise, Jane glares at me as if I'm the one who's been caught cheating.
"Shut up, Emily. This has nothing to do with you."
Hearing her speak so boldly causes me to blink with surprise. Who is this girl and where has Jane gone?
"Excuse me? You're cheating on Tobias with this guy! Why are you acting like I'm the one in the wrong? I thought you loved him!" I yell back at her.
The mystery guy turns to look at Jane with confusion on his face.
"Who's Tobias? You told me you were single," the boy says quietly.
I immediately feel terrible for him.
"Don't listen to them, Dylan. I don't have any feelings left for Tobias Melvin."
Jane spits out his name like it's a dirty taste on her tongue. I'm unable to believe I'm standing in front of the same girl who I've spent time with for the last several months. The boy who I now know is called Dylan steps toward Jane and slides an arm around her shoulders. I almost faint at the scene in front of me.
"Tobias is going to lose his shit," I mutter before running my hands over my face.
He's going to be hurt and devastated. I know how much he liked Jane, and knowing she's cheating on him is going to send him spiraling again. Beside me, Jake releases an angry animalistic noise in agreement. Jane glares at me before turning her attention to Jake. She points at me with an accusing finger. What she says next causes my mouth to hang open in shock and confusion.
"You really shouldn't trust your girlfriend, Jake. You don't know who she really is."
I have no idea what she's talking about.
