Boxing Day Drama.
I've pictured Violet many times in my head but seeing her in person brings up a series of emotions for me. She's beautiful.
"What are you doing here, Violet?" I ask her.
The last I'd heard, she moved town after her massive break up with Jake. She twirls a strand of her hair around her finger before shooting me a smile.
"I'm here to talk to Jake," Violet tells me.
My brows shoot up with surprise and I continue to stare at her with confusion. What could she possibly want to talk to Jake about? She cheated on him with his cousin. Her actions speak louder than words.
"Sorry, I should have introduced myself. I'm Jake's girlfriend," I say to her.
I'm more than just his girlfriend... I'm carrying his child but Violet doesn't need to know that. I don't expect her to react by bursting out with laughter. It's a laugh deep from her stomach and it causes a frown to take over my features. Did I say something funny? She continues laughing before realizing I'm serious. She looks back at me with bewilderment.
"Oh wow... You're not joking. Are you?"
"No, I'm not joking," I respond through gritted teeth.
I stand up straighter and take an immediate dislike to her. She's kind of a bitch. I hear footsteps approaching me from inside the house. My eyes flutter closed for a brief second because I know this isn't going to go down well.
"Wentworth? What's taking you so –" Jake opens the door and appears beside me.
As soon as his eyes land on Violet, he pauses and stares at her like he's seen a ghost from his past. I hold my breath with anticipation as I wait for his reaction. They both exchange a knowing look and I feel jealousy beginning to brew in the pit of my stomach. I can't resist feeling jealous when Violet is looking at the father of my child like she wants to jump his bones.
"Violet?" Jake says her name quietly in disbelief.
Violet pouts her lips and takes a suggestive step closer.
"Hey, baby. Did you miss me?" I almost choke on my imaginary drink. Baby?
"Excuse me? What did you just say?" I ask in disbelief.
Violet tears her eyes off Jake to glare at me. The disrespect and audacity exuding from her is suffocating. I stare back at her with an equal amount of intensity. I refuse to be intimidated by someone who has no respect for my relationship. I feel Jake's arm slip around my shoulder and he pulls me into his hard chest.
"What the fuck are you doing here, Violet?"
Ah, there it is. There's the hostility she deserves to be greeted with. Violet's smile is wiped off her face and an immediate smirk plays on my lips.
"I moved back to the area and thought I'd come see you... Merry Christmas!" Violet says cheerily.
I have to admire her for her ability to keep going even after feeling Jake's hostility toward her. Jake appears equally as stunned as I feel.
"You say that as if it's a good thing. I don't want anything to do with you. You fucked my cousin, remember?" Jake snaps at her.
Violet's glossy lips settle into a thin line. "That's what I came to talk to you about."
"I have nothing to say to you," Jake hits back at her.
Violet's eyes drift over his arm that's draped around my shoulder. She makes eye contact with me for a brief second and I feel the hatred exuding from her gaze. I've been met with icy stares before but Violet's stare takes home the ribbon. I'm not a fool... She's obviously hoping to win Jake back. How she thinks she's going to do that after betraying his trust and shattering his world is beyond me.
"I think that's your cue to leave," I say to her with a narrowed expression.
"It would be easier to talk to you if your... friend wasn't in the way." Violet hits back at me before focusing her attention on Jake.
Anger begins to surge through me. I understand Violet experiencing regret for how she treated Jake, but persisting to win him back knowing he has a girlfriend is a wildly bold and unacceptable move.
"I'm not his friend, I'm his girlfriend. Your morals clearly haven't changed since the last time you were around here. Stealing another girl's boyfriend is a desperate move. It makes you look cheap and trust me, it's not a pretty sight. You heard Jake... He wants nothing to do with you. You should leave now."
Violet blinks at me in complete and utter surprise. I guess she wasn't expecting me to hit her with home truths. Before she can respond, I take a step back and slam the door in her face. Adrenaline and anger surge through my body. How dare she! My eyes flicker up to connect with Jake's and he's smirking at me. He takes a step forward, wraps his fingers around my chin before tilting my head back.
"Holy shit, Wentworth... That was hot." He whispers the words before pressing a slow kiss to my lips.
It's all I need for the anger to melt away into a puddle of nothing. Even though I'm no longer angry, I have a feeling it's not the last time I'm going to be dealing with Violet. Jake leads me back into the living room with his arm securely wrapped around my shoulder.
"Who was at the door?" Ivory asks while biting into a sugar cookie.
"Violet," I say dryly before dropping down in my seat.
Ivory chokes and sprays cookie crumbs all over the floor.
"Violet?!"
Tobias' face pales and he stares between me and Jake with shock.
"Violet?"
Aunt Myra and Michelle sit up straight, almost sending their glasses of red wine tippling over the edge.
"Violet?! What is that girl doing back here?"
Jake releases a deep breath of frustration before pressing his palms into his eyes.
"Yes, Violet! Is there a damn echo in here?"
The room falls silent with awkward tension. I replay the conversation with Violet over and over again inside my mind. It stirs up nausea in my stomach and I slap a hand over my mouth as I feel it crawling its way up my throat.
"Uhh, not again," I mutter before darting out of the living room. I make it to the toilet bowl within a split second before emptying the contents of my stomach.
*
I'm sitting in Lulu's cafe with a hot chocolate. My best friend, Trisha Louise Lockwood, is sitting opposite me with a strawberry milkshake. I've just finished telling her the story of meeting Violet for the first time.
"Ugh! What a bitch! I can't believe you didn't punch her for trying to steal your man," Trish tells me.
I snort at the idea of punching Violet.
"She isn't worth it... I'm not worried about her."
"How did Jake take it? It must not be easy to see her again after all these years."
"He's been... quiet. I think seeing Violet again has dug up his feelings surrounding Tobias and the whole cheating scandal. Him and Tobias haven't spoken properly since she showed up at the door," I take a sip of my hot chocolate with caution.
Everything I'm eating or drinking follows up with a wave of nausea. It's completely random and comes without warning. I've thrown up more times than I can count. My features scrunch up into a grimace and I stare down at my hot chocolate with disappointment.
"What's wrong? Is it gross?" Trish asks me.
I chew on my bottom lip before reaching into my pocket.
"I have something to show you."
My nerves build as I prepare to tell my best friend about the pregnancy. I pull out the test before placing it on the table in front of her. Trish stares down at it in shock. For several long seconds, she doesn't say anything. "Trish?" I question her quietly.
Her face is unreadable and it begins to heighten my nerves. Will she react badly just like everybody else?
"Shut the front door." Trish breathes out in awe before grabbing hold of the stick.
She stares at it before looking up at me and that's when I notice the tears in her eyes.
"You're going to be a Mommy?" Trish whispers with emotion.
Her words hit me straight in the heart and I immediately feel tears fill my eyes. I picture a child, part me and part Jake, calling me Mommy. A creation of our love. I'm suddenly hit with a wave of love and disbelief and I begin nodding my head profusely.
"Yes, I'm going to be a Mommy," I laugh and cry at the same time.
Trish begins blubbering before leaning over the table and embracing me tightly. I cling onto her as we both experience the emotion together. She's the first person I've told about the pregnancy who reacted with nothing but joy for me. I didn't realize how exciting it was to have people react with joy at the news instead of dread. She doesn't question how young I am, or how long I've been with Jake. She doesn't worry about my future career or how I'm planning on raising this child. She accepts the decision for exactly what it is... A miracle.
"Oh, Emily. I'm so happy for you. You're going to make the most amazing Mommy," Trish blubbers like a baby on my shoulder.
I mirror her reaction until we're both an emotional mess.
"You're going to make the most amazing Aunty," I tell her.
Trish pulls back with a look of excitement in her large eyes.
"Aunty Trish... That has a good ring to it, doesn't it?"
"Yeah, Trish. It does. God, I love you. This is exactly why you're my best friend," I laugh while wiping my eyes.
Trish beams back at me before inspecting the pregnancy test. She breathes out in disbelief before taking a seat.
"I can't believe it. You're going to have a baby with Jake freakin' Melvin."
I can't believe it either. One year ago, I locked eyes with Jake for the very first time. Since then, my life has drastically changed and I owe it all to him.
"How far along are you?" Trish asks me.
I place my hand over my stomach to feel for a bump, but I'm left disappointed.
"I have no idea. My scan is soon and that's when I'll find out everything I need to know."
I don't know whether it's first pregnancy nerves or a bad feeling settling deep in my gut. I feel like I'm on the edge of my seat, waiting for something terrible to happen. I put it down to living a whirlwind life last year... Everything is going to be fine. I have to learn to ride the wave as it comes instead of constantly worrying. It's time I started to adapt Jake's laid back approach to the curveballs life is throwing in our direction. Trish's eyes light up at the mention of my scan.
"I can't wait to see the little bean. How is Jake feeling about the pregnancy?"
"He's taking it better than I thought he would. I was afraid the news of being a Dad at nineteen would freak him out, but he's coming to terms with it. We both are," I smile before glancing down at my stomach.
My heart fills with love and I'm finally beginning to feel the fog lift from my mind. Yes, having a baby is terrifying... But it can also be beautiful and life changing.
