Chapter 34.
My patience is simply running thin with the stares. I thought it would pass, but nope, it has intensified, and now I've chosen to take refuge in the school library, just for the break.
I didn't pay any mind to the few glances I've received when I entered the library, now with time passed, I feel like myself again. I know that Wesley meant well by what he did this morning, he didn't want me to remain under such attention, but I don't think he understands, what all this may mean.
I feel him sit on the chair next to mine.
" I've been looking everywhere for you."
" Well, you found me." I say, not tearing my eyes away from my book.
" Chloe, what's wrong?"
" Nothing, just tired of the stares I've been receiving since morning."
" Since when have you cared about them?" He says, his tone teasing.
I turn away from the book to look at him.
" I don't, but even to someone like me, it can get pretty annoying. Look Wesley, you're used to it but I'm not, and I don't want to start now." I say, rising to my feet and walking off to put the book, back in its place.
I feel him follow me.
" I know you didn't expect what happened this morning, and maybe I didn't either."
" Thanks, that makes me feel better." I say sarcastically.
" I know that you were uncomfortable, that's why I took you away from there. I didn't like them staring at you so much."
" It's not your fault that people like you so much, and -----------"
" I only care that you like me."
I don't say anything to that.
I hear him sigh before he speaks. "I'm not ashamed of you."
I turn away from the shelf with a frown, to look at him.
" This morning, what happened - look Chloe James, I did all of that, for people to know that I am not ashamed to be seen with you. You are the one I want to spend most of my time with, you are not just my friend, but someone important in my life, and it's better if people start getting used to that."
I stare at him, having no words to respond. He has struck me speechless, not only by his words but how determined and confident he looks.
" You don't have to prove anything to anyone, people just need to mind their own business." I shrug, placing the book in the shelf before walking past him.
" I know all that, because I don't want people sticking their noses in my business."
" Good, something we both have in common."
" But even with that said, they'll continue doing that, because they now are curious about this really beautiful girl, I'm in company with."
We both sit down and I turn to him.
" Are you trying to smoothtalk me, Adams?"
" Does it have an effect?" He wiggles his brows.
I look at him for a second before laughing softly.
" And I have now achieved getting out a smile from you."
" Shut up." I try hit his arm but he leans back, both our smiles still present.
" Look Chloe, I don't want you to be uncomfortable and I wish there was a way --------- "
" Maybe if you stopped holding my hand...."
" No, I can't do that." He says, taking my hand.
His whole demeanor has changed and he looks so serious right now.
" I'm not your girlfriend Wesley, I'm your friend." I pull my hand back.
He opens his mouth to say something but then the bell suddenly rings.
" We should get to class." I rise to my feet and pack my stuff, before taking my bag and walking off.
He falls instep with me.
" I haven't forgotten about last night."
" By your actions, I don't doubt it."
" Nothing has changed, today might be a new day but nothing has changed. I still feel the same way."
" Wesley, don't do this now." I say, mentally rolling my eyes at the many glances we receive along the way.
" Okay then, later when I come by."
" Maybe I don't want to see you later, did you think about that?"
" And did you think about the fact that I might have a way to change your mind?" My breath hitches when he says this in my ear.
I already know what he's indicating at.
" Don't come near me, Adams."
I gasp, when he suddenly grabs at my arm and pulls me to a stop.
" W - what are you doing, people are staring!" I whisper yell, secretly glancing at the attention we've just earned.
" I don't care."
" Wesley ----------"
" Don't ever say that again."
" W-what?"
" That you don't want me near you." He says it with the most serious face I've never seen before.
I open and close my mouth, yet nothing comes out.
" Don't you know that being near you feels the most right to me?"
A twinge of hurt takes over my chest due to my words, having such an effect on him. I see so much emotion in his eyes.
" Okay, I won't say it again."
He looks at me for a few seconds before he nods and takes my arm, continuing on to class.
" I'm not holding your hand." He says along the way, making me to roll my eyes.
I'm bothered by something, the grumbling of my stomach. I've been reminded that I haven't exactly eaten today or last night, now I'm paying for it.
I'll just catch something at home or on the way, if Wesley could get here any faster.
The sound of girls nearby, captures my attention away from my phone. My eyes do a quick survey around me, to see Callie with her friends, more like clique, walk on by. As if she feels my eyes on her, she glances my way. The eye contact only lasts about a few seconds, before I turn my back to them, facing ahead.
I hear their voices fade off into the distance and I sigh, remembering that Callie and I are currently not in speaking terms. She must still be mad at me and I am yet to figure out, the real problem here.
I want to understand what had suddenly set her off, the way it did that day.
Aimlessly looking around and outside the school premesis, I watch the activity happening out there and I let my thoughts to take over. All of a sudden, in my peaceful watch, everything around me comes to a standstill, when I take notice of something that threatens to take me back to the past.
My heart drops and my knees buckle, because of a sight of a navy blue truck, which slowly drives past the school, as if it has every intention to toture me with its pace. Everything about the truck spells out Luis, his truck is similar to that one.
Or maybe it's his?
My heart starts racing when the dimmed window starts rolling down, and I'm given no choice, but to painstakingly wait to see who the driver is.
No, it must be him, I have a feeling that it's Luis and he's found us, now he wants me. He wants to make me suffer, until I lose my mind.
" Chloe?" I nearly jump out of my skin, when I feel a touch on my shoulder.
" Woah, hey, Chloe!" I'm turned around to face Wesley, who looks down at me with concern. " What's wrong, you're ----------"
" D-did you see that truck?" I ask, with wide eyes.
" What truck?"
" The truck that was ------------," I stop short when I glance to where I'd seen it, preparing to point it out, but it's nowhere in sight.
" Chloe, I don't see any truck, just random cars driving by."
" No but there was, I just can't see it now and -----------"
" Hey, hey, Chloe, calm down." He says, holding both my arms.
I try to calm down, while my eyes search for the navy blue truck.
" Chloe, look at me." I keep on searching for it, hoping it will show up so I can prove it to Wesley. " Hey, look at me!"
His demanding tone earns my attention and I blink up at him.
" There is nothing there. Now tell me, what truck are you talking about?"
I open and close my mouth, but when I remind myself of who this is, that this is Wesley and he won't understand me, I don't say anything.
I pull back from his hold and take a step back, avoiding his eyes.
" Lets just go." I turn around and start walking off, only to stop short when I feel a sudden dizziness come over me.
" Chloe wait - woah, hey!" He is quick to wrap an arm around me. " Are you okay?"
I blink up at him. " Chloe?"
I shake my head, trying to shake off the dizziness.
" Chloe, talk to me. What ----------"
" I'm fine. It's just that I haven't eaten the whole day, that's all." I say, trying to move out of his hold, but he won't let go.
" Why didn't you tell me?"
" It slipped my mind, besides, it's not a big deal, so lets go and stop looking at me like that!" I point in warning after wiggling out of his hold.
" Chloe ---------"
" Lets go Wesley." I walk on to the passenger side, not even sparing him a glance.
He finally enters the car and I feel him glance at me for a moment, before driving out of school.
The whole trip I'm thinking about that truck, and what all this could mean. I don't want to ignore the signs but then again, it might just be my mind playing tricks on me.
I've been paranoid lately, letting every little thing be associated with Luis, when in actual fact, he is nowhere near us.
' He won't find us, we are safe.' I mentally tell myself.
" We're here." I snap out of my thoughts.
True to his words, I see that we have arrived.
I turn to him and already he's looking at me.
" I'm sorry about earlier, how I acted."
" Will you tell me what that was all about?"
I turn away from him and reach out to open the door, but his hand touches my arm, immediately stopping me.
" Chloe." I glance at him. " Don't shut me out." He says, his eyes pleading.
" I have to go." I open the door and get out.
" Just please - don't forget to eat." He says.
I nod, taking my bag and closing the door, before heading inside. I do all I can to not cave in and give power to the dizziness, as I head for the door. I don't want Wesley to notice, because I know he's watching.
Once inside, I let out a sigh and reach out for the nearest wall, needing support, because I'm not only dizzy but there's a headache forming too.
My bag had long fallen down.
" Chloe?.......Oh my gosh, Chloe?" I hear someone say, before I feel an arm wrap around me.
" Where's Aiden?"
" He's gone out for a moment, but he'll back soon. Do you want me to call him now?"
" No, don't. He'll overreact."
" But you don't look good, come on." She starts helping me up the stairs, since I pretty much call for it.
" Don't tell my brother." I say, after laying down on the bed.
" But he needs to know."
" No, don't." I shake my head.
I hear her sigh.
" Let me make you something to eat."
" Later, can you get me painkillers, my head hurts."
" Sure." I hear her leave and come back with the pills and glass of water, helping me.
" I should really tell your brother."
" No, please don't." That's the last thing I let out, before I block out my surroundings.
I drown in and out of consciousness, yet my eyes don't open, each time I'm met with silence until the feeling of another presence, invades my space. I feel numb and immobile, as I lay in one position, hair is pushed out of my face, making me aware that truly, I'm not alone.
It must be Aiden, gosh, it must be.
' Hello Darlin '
********
I can't remember the last time I had experienced a stomach ache, such as this one. I slept throughout the night and I had woken up, to a sore stomach. I don't think I can drag myself out of bed anymore, like I did earlier, when I needed to pee and ofcourse, to brush my teeth and wash my face.
I wish to change my clothes because I feel yucky right now. I don't want anyone to see me like this because the sight, isn't good at all.
I let out a huff of frustration when the pain wont go away, not to mention, the door opens and Aiden enters. The look on his face tells me that he is not happy with me. I know right then and there, that Ingrid told him about what happened.
" Don't look at me like that." I say, letting out a groan when another shot of pain hits me.
" How else am I supposed to look at you?" He says, placing a tray of a steaming cup on my bedside table.
" I didn't want you to worry, like you are doing right now." I say.
He shakes his head. " Come on, sit up." He helps me to sit up, placing a pillow behind me.
He takes the tray and places it beside me, before holding out the cup. I scrunch my nose when the smell of ginger hits my nose.
" Can't I just take medicine?"
He shoots me with a glare.
" Chloe Ann James, don't tempt me to strangle you more than I want to right now. Here, take it."
" You love me though, I'm like your favourite." I say, taking the cup.
" Drink." He demands.
I sigh, finally giving in and taking a sip.
" Why this ginger tea though, you know I don't ---------"
" Shut up Chloe and drink."
" Sheesh, calm down, I'm drinking already." I huff, continuing with drinking it.
When I was young and I would experience stomach pains, Aiden would make me ginger tea and I didn't like it, not that I do now.
" I'm mad at you." He says after a while.
" I already got that."
" Chloe, you almost didn't make it up to the stairs yesterday. "
"Now your girlfriend was just exaggerating."
" Stop joking around and take this seriously."
I sigh. " Aiden, if I take everything to heart and mind, I might just not make it."
" This is about your health, Chloe. You didn't eat for so long and not to mention, you drank pills on an empty stomach. How could you be so careless?!" He jumps off the bed and starts pacing back and forth.
" I know that it was a stupid act on my part, I get it, and I won't do it again. "
" That's what you said the last time."
Now that feels like a slap on my face, to be reminded of that night.
" Now you want us to fight and we will fight, big time Aiden." I warn him, turning away from him when I feel myself getting annoyed.
I hear him sigh before he sits back down next to me.
" Chloe."
" Leave me alone." I shrug his hand off my leg.
" I'm sorry." He says.
I ignore him, drinking my tea.
" I shouldn't have said that."
" No, you shouldn't have." I say.
" I don't want us to fight."
I sigh, finally turning to face him.
" Look Chloe, I was worried, really worried, especially when you slept for the whole of last night."
" I know, and I said I'm sorry."
" I don't want to strangle you anymore, so relax."
" Good to know, and by the way, I don't like this." I say, putting the half drank tea aside.
" I know, that's why I made it."
" Mean." I poke my tongue at him.
" Childish." I playfully roll my eyes. " Tell me, how do you feel now?"
" I'll live." I shrug.
"I don't want a repeat of yesterday."
" I was careless, I know. Forgive your favourite little sister."
" You're my only sister, my only family."
I smile at that. " And don't forget Owen, he might not be of blood but he's still family, right?"
" Yeah, he is." He says with a small smile, which doesn't reach his eyes.
" What's wrong?" I ask.
He shakes his head, rising to his feet and getting off the bed. " I called your school earlier, so you don't have to worry. Now rest up."
" Aiden, I --------- "
A knock sounds at my bedroom door and Aiden goes on to open it, revealing Ingrid.
" I'll make you something to eat." He says, walking out.
Ingrid comes in and closes the door.
" Hey." She says, coming closer.
" This is not my favourite at all." I say, gesturing to the cup of ginger tea, which must be cold by now.
" Me too."
" Atleast we have something in common." I say.
" Look Chloe, I kinda told your brother, it slipped and --------"
" I know."
" I'm sorry."
I wave it off. " He would have found out anyway, and I shouldn't have asked you to lie to him."
" No, I understand that you didn't want him to worry."
" Yeah, but I shouldn't have put you in such a position."
" I'm sorry."
" Don't worry about it."
She nods, feeling relieved.
A moment of awkward silence takes over and before either of us can break it, another knock sounds.
" Now I feel special." I say sarcastically, before sliding down on the bed and cover myself, when Wesley comes in.
I hear movement before the bed dips.
I huff in resignation when the cover is pulled down, now exposing my head. Wesley looks down at me.
" Shouldn't you be on your way to school by now?"
" Why didn't you call me?" He asks, ignoring my question.
" Hmm, I think I did call you in my dreams, didn't you hear me calling?" I say, tapping my chin playfully.
" You would have woken up next to me if I did. Now stop joking and answer my question."
" I was asleep." I answer honestly.
" You're shutting me out again."
" I'm not, I'm telling you the truth." I say.
He doesn't say anything, but stares at me.
" Okay, look into my eyes and tell me if I'm lying."
I see his eyes search mine, before he sighs. " I told you to eat."
" I know, I know, but I got dizzy and then a headache happened, all I thought about was sleeping everything away."
He gives me a disapproving look.
" Don't look at me like that."
" I don't like that I didn't hear from you."
" Well, it's not like we talk on the phone everyday, now do we?" I arch my brow.
" And who's fault is that?" He gives me a cheeky look.
" Definetly not me." I shake my head.
" All this must change, communication is key, Chloe James."
" To what?"
He doesn't answer me but pecks my cheek, before getting off the bed and heads for the bathroom.
" Uh, wrong door Adams."
" I'm going to prepare a hot bath for you."
" Wesley, I can do that myself, now go to school or you'll be late."
" I'm not going!" He calls from the bathroom.
" What do you mean you're not going?!"
The sound of water suddenly comes on, cutting me off.
" Wesley, what are you doing?" I say suspiciously, when he returns, standing at the bathroom doorway.
" What does it look like I'm doing?" He crosses his arms.
" Wesley.........." I say in a warning tone.
" I'll take care of you today, no one else but me."
" Oh gosh." I groan out, pulling the covers over me.
*******
I can't believe Aiden trusted Wesley to ' look after me.' Actually, I call this babysitting. I thought Aiden would have been all big brother protective and protesting at the thought, but nope, whatever Wesley had told him downstairs without me present, must have been one heck of a speech.
So Aiden and Ingrid left, and now it's only Wesley and me. Spending the whole day with Wesley, is something I never thought would happen, but here we are.
As much as I tried protesting and kicking him out, Wesley Adams neither gave into my demands. I found myself actually being the one letting him have his way.
Finally bathed and refreshed, with a fresh set of clothes, I head out of my room and downstairs, only to meet Wesley as he comes up the stairs, holding a tray of food in hand.
" What are you doing out of bed?"
" I don't want to feel hospitalised in my own room Wesley, so don't even think about ordering me back there." I say, walking past him and heading to the living room.
I hear him follow me and when I've taken a seat on the couch, he follows suit, placing the tray onto my lap.
I murmur a thank you before digging in. I find myself demanding that he join me, but because he's stubborn, he says no.
I demand that he must eat later on, because I don't want him to get hungry, while ' looking after me.'
" Can't we go out, I don't know, maybe to take a walk or something?"
" No, you're staying in bed."
" But I'm fine now." I pout at him.
" No, I don't think so." He shakes his head.
I roll my eyes.
" You'd think I was critically sick or something." I mumble, looking away from him.
" Stop complaining and eat."
" Yes sir." I do a salute gesture before continuing to eat.
I feel him watching me the whole time, making me feel weird. It's not long that I lose my appetite and put everything aside.
" You didn't finish."
" I'm full, now stop being a boring ' nurse' and lets do something."
He wiggles his brows at me and I give him a ' really ' look.
" I didn't mean that."
" I heard it was the best medicine."
" Who told you such a lie?" I ask through a laugh.
" I will never reveal my sources. " He pretends to be zipping closed his mouth and I roll my eyes.
" Okay, seriously though, lets do something because we can't be sitting here, doing nothing."
"We can play a few games, watch some movies, listen to music or --------"
" Lets do everything."
I'm taken aback when he suddenly pecks my lips.
" Why did you do that?"
" You didn't let me finish and this is part of everything."
" Wesley, stop." I warn him.
" I'm kissing you Chloe James, because I like it very much and it feels good to do it."
I blink at him, not sure if I heard him right.
" That just sounded weird."
" I don't care. It makes sense to me." He pecks my lips again before rising to his feet and taking the tray to the kitchen.
My face warms up as I watch him walk away.
" I can feel your eyes on me."
" So?"
He stops in his tracks to glance at me, over his shoulder.
" So it must mean it's true what they say, that my ass looks good."
I blink at him twice before I burst out laughing.
I snuggle into my pillow, having resigned for the day. I had a good time spending it with Wesley and now, I have called it quits, since I couldn't keep my eyes opened any longer.
I could feel fingers combing through my hair and it feeling so nice. I found myself drowning into sleep for some time, before the sound of voices nearby, woke me up slightly.
I recognised them as Aiden and Wesley talking.
' Thank you for trusting me with her.' Wesley says.
' I've finally understood that you can't stay away from her.'
' I can't. '
Silence.
' Okay then, I'm going to ask that you don't hurt her.'
' And I'm going to ask that you don't go, don't take her away from me?'
