Chapter 4

Dimitri

I was going through various business files, trying to work, knowing that if I didn't, I would get up and go to Kate. But an uneasy feeling gripped me, my mind going crazy with the thoughts of her and what she might be doing.

I had hurt her again. This seemed to be the the only thing I was good at when it came to her. I couldn't stop thinking about her words. She thought I didn't care. Did I really not? Why couldn't she just move on?

I loved her. I wanted to live with her for the rest of our lives. Was that not enough? Why couldn't she stop thinking about that fucking bastard who destroyed our lives a few years ago? Why couldn't she just reciprocate my love for her? Why?

With all these thoughts surrounding my mind, alongwith a horrible feeling clenching my gut, I left all the work, walking into my bedroom only to find it empty. I walked towards the bathroom, knocking.

"Kate, are you in there?" I asked as softly as I could. When I didn't get a reply after a few seconds, I kicked the door open. The sight that greeted me made me want to scream loudly.

"Fuck." I swore.

I felt my heart being ripped open, my soul leaving my body, as I breathed heavily, looking at her. There she was, her back against the bathroom wall, her eyes closed, her lips parted. Her hands were in her lap with her wrists bleeding, as she sat there in a puddle of her own blood.

"FUCK!" I roared as I realised what I had made her do.

I walked towards her, taking her pale body in my arms, calling her name and asking her to wake up. "Kate open your eyes." But she stayed unmoving, her breathing shallow.

I picked her up, securing her in my arms, before running out of the room. As I walked downstairs with Kate limp in my arms, everyone turned towards us. My eyes met Eric's concerned ones.

"Call Adriana. Tell her it's an emergency." I told him, referring to our doctor. With that being said, I walked towards the small room at the end of the hallway. This was where all my men were treated in case of an injury.

I laid Kate on the small bed. Within five minutes, the doctor was there with her staff, examining Kate. Soon enough, she was hooked to some tubes as they kept treating her.

I stood in a corner against the wall, my eyes fixed on Kate, my heart weeping and praying for her health. Hours seemed to pass before Adriana came over to me.

"We have taken care of her wounds. They will definitely leave scars but she'll be fine. Also, her body seems tense. Like she is going through some serious issues. I think the reason behind this behaviour is some serious past incident that has also led her to attempt suicide."

Nodding at her, "When will she wake up?" I asked, wanting to see the beautiful green eyes that made my heart flutter. "We have put her in an induced coma for better recovery. She won't be up before at least two days."

I felt my heart tighten in my chest. I walked towards the bed, sitting on the chair beside it. After a few moments, Adriana walked out of the room with her staff, leaving me alone with an unconscious Kate.

"What have you done Kate?" I whispered softly, holding and lightly kissing her hand. I kept staring at her face sideways, resting my head on her stomach. For the first time in years, I felt really tired. After a while, my eyes fluttered close on their own accord, my body welcoming the sleep.

3 DAYS LATER

I was still sitting on the hospital chair, waiting for Kate to wake up. The doctor had come to check up on her various times, each time telling me she was fine. But she was still comatose. And that worried me.

I held Kate's hand, caressing it. "Wake up, love. Please wake up. Let me see your beautiful eyes." Kate's hand tightened around mine. I looked up to see her eyes open slowly before she shut them again.

I stood up, moving closer to her, my body shielding her face from the light. She opened her eyes again, causing me to inhale sharply. "Water," she groaned. I helped her sit up slightly and gave her some water, before calling Adriana.

Kate

I felt tired, my body weak, my head pounding and my throat dry. Dimitri called the doctor. She came and checked my vitals, asking me various questions before she finally left.

Dimitri remained silent the whole time, his eyes fixed on the wall behind me. I closed my eyes, waiting for him to shout at me, to tell me I would regret it, but nothing came.

All I felt was a pair of lips on my forehead, the light feathery touch making my body shiver, casuing me to gasp and open my eyes in an instant. Dimitri stood above me, his eyes shining tenderly with love. Yet I couldn't believe him.

"Get well soon, love." He whispered slowly and softly, before he walked out of the room, leaving me in a haywire of emotions. I sat there for some time, staring at my bandaged wrists, before I rested my head against the pillow and closed my eyes.

The next morning a maid brought some breakfast for me. I stayed in bed the whole day before the doctor gave me permission to go. A maid was with me the whole time.

This continued for the next few days. I would wake up, eat breakfast, read something and then sleep again, all the while being accompanied by one maid or another. Dimitri was hardly ever around. He came late at night only when he thought I was asleep.

During all this time, he did not once mention the wedding. But there was an uneasy feeling that I couldn't shake off. My mind kept on telling me that I would have to become his bride no matter what.

Had it not been for what I saw that day, I would've totally dismissed my thoughts and unease.

I woke up at my usual time, going through my daily routine. A few hours had passed when Dimitri came in. He was wearing a grey tailored suit, the tie hanging loosely round his neck and his hair disheveled. Following him was a group of five people.

"This is my fiancé, Kate." He introduced me to the group. "Start doing your job as fast as you can. I want her ready within the next three hours." I frowned at his words and stared at him questioningly. Feeling my gaze upon him, he walked towards me.

He bent down and kissed my head. "We are getting married today. These people will help you get ready. Cooperate with them. I don't want to hear any complaints."

His words made my breath hitch, as my eyes suddenly blurred and I felt a lump in my throat. So it was finally happening. My futile attempt of suicide had done nothing but scar my wrists. He had not changed his mind.

Blinking, I took one look at the group of people moving around the room, preparing for my makeover, before lowering my eyes and whispering softly, "Dimitri, please don't do this." He sat beside me on the bed and held my hand.

"It's done Kate. You will become my wife today. Don't do anything stupid. I won't hesitate to make you mine even by force." His words made me scoff lightly.

"Aren't you already forcing me considering the fact that I don't want to marry you?" I asked. His eyes hardened at my words and he squeezed my hand, before letting it go. "I'll see you downstairs in a few hours." With that, he walked out of the room.

The next couple of hours seemed to pass by in a blur, as the group kept working on my hair and makeup. Soon, I was told to put on the wedding dress selected by my soon-to-be husband. It would've been beautiful, had it not been chosen by Dimitri and given to me.

As I put on the dress, my mind was bombarded with memories of past. Blinking my eyes to control the tears, I looked at myself in the mirror. The woman staring back at me looked breathtaking but her eyes were empty. They had nothing in them.

AT THE CEREMONY

"I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride." A distant voice reached my ears, snapping me out of my thoughts. I looked up to see Dimitri staring at me with love and longing.

Dimitri leaned in, causing me to shut my eyes tightly and hold my breath as I felt his lips on the corner of my mouth. I heard whistles and shouts of joy as the people around us clapped at this display of affection. Dimitri pulled away and kissed my forehead.

I could see the small smirk playing at lips, taunting me. He looked at me, his eyes shining with triumph, the love in them now concealed. He had won. I was now his wife. I belonged to him now and there was nothing I could've done to stop it. He knew how to play and he had played me well.
