Chapter 15
Dimitri
I was in a state of ecstasy. I held my beautiful Kate in my arms as I kissed her lips and made love to her body and soul.
There was a constant pounding on our bedroom door and I opened my eyes, looking around.
"Dimitri! Open the fucking door!" I heard Eric's loud voice.
I groaned, getting out of the bed and opened the door for him.
"Wha-"
"Attack! We are under attack," he told me. "You need to come with us now. We need to leave. The situation is very serious."
"Just give me a few minutes. I'll see you downstairs." I told him.
He nodded and left.
I turned back to look at the bed, where my darling was now somewhat awake. She looked so beautiful I couldn't help but stare at her for a moment too long.
"What's wrong, Dimitri?" She asked in a groggy voice. "Is everything okay?"
"Go back to sleep, darling. It's nothing," I told her. Then I moved quickly to the bathroom to freshen up and get dressed. Within a few minutes, I was putting on my jacket, ready to leave. I walked towards Kate's side of the bed where she was sleeping soundly and kissed her head.
Just as I was about to walk away, I felt her holding my hand. I looked at her and found her staring at me with wide eyes.
"Where are you going?" She asked me.
"I'm sorry, darling, but something urgent came up and I need to go and check what it is. Forgive me for leaving you alone but I think it might be important." I told her.
"But, Dimitri," she said in a small voice. "Can't you just send Eric or somebody else?"
"I am the Boss, Kate. I need to be there." I told her firmly.
She looked at me with glistening eyes and whispered quietly, "I don't want you to leave, Dimitri. I'm scared. I am very scared."
I breathed deeply and cupped her face in my hands. "I'm sorry, my love. But I can not stay."
I, then, placed a kiss on her head, mumbling in her ear the words I always wanted her to remember. "I love you, Kate, my darling. I'll come back to you as soon as this is over." Pecking her lips, I got up and left the room, hurrying downstairs.
I saw Eric and a few other men huddled in the centre of the room and walked towards them. They all stood straight when they saw me approaching, and waited for me to say something.
"How bad is it?" I asked.
"From what we've been informed, it seems pretty fucked up, Boss. I think it's better if we get there fast and kill the fucking bastard who tried to mess with us," one of my men said.
"Any information on who's behind it?" I asked, looking at Eric.
Eric's face hardened as he uttered the name that I already suspected.
"Desmond Saviano."
"Fuck!" I cursed loudly. "I'm going to kill that fucking son of a bitch. He's going to regret his entire existence. I'll make him pay for this in such a way that he will curse the day he was born."
I was fucking outraged. I was not going to let a fucking bastard ruin my business or hurt my family. Desmond Saviano was going down.
"I'm coming for you Saviano. I'm going to kill you."
I then walked out of the estate, with my men following behind me, ready to teach those a lesson who even thought of messing with me.
Kate
As soon as Dimitri left the room, I tried to get my raging heart under control. But it just kept beating wildly against my ribcage, leaving me breathless.
I had not prayed for anything since Elijah died. But sitting there, anticipating the future and what it might have in store for us, I prayed to God for Dimitri's safety.
Dimitri
It had been a few hours since I left the estate. The situation was pretty bad and we needed to form a plan soon to get Saviano out of our way. My whole body was tense, my mind was in a complete overdrive, taking in every minute detail, and trying to comprehend a solution for the problem at hand.
To relax myself, I decided to call my beloved wife. I took out my phone and dialled her number, waiting for her to pick up. A few seconds later, I heard her beautiful voice fill my ears.
"Dimitri, are you okay? When are you coming back?" I smiled hearing her voice.
"I'm fine, my love. How are you?" I asked her.
"I'm fine, Dimitri. But to be honest, I miss you. I miss you being around me. And," she broke off, not saying anything anymore.
"And what, darling?" I asked her. "Kate, are you okay? What were you saying?"
"I'm okay, Dimitri. But I'm scared," she said in a quiet voice.
"Scared of what, darling?" I asked again.
"Scared of the dangers you might be facing right now. I'm scared for you, Dimitri," she whispered.
"Kate, please, rela-" I started to say but she cut me off.
"I'm fucking worried about you, you goddamn idiot," she screeched. "So don't you dare tell me to relax. What if something happens to you?"
"Nothing would happen to me, love." I tried to reassure her. But she wasn't listening to me. And then I heard her sobbing on the other end of the line.
"Kate," I called her, worried. "Kate, darling, are you okay? Please don't cry, my love. I will be fine."
"Promise me you'll come back soon," she said, still sobbing.
"I promise I'll be back as soon as I can," I told her.
"And promise me that you will come back to me in one piece."
"I'll try my best, darling, but I can not promise you such a thing." I told her gently.
"If you can't promise me that you'll be safe there, then please come back. Don't stay there. What if something happens to you?"
I sighed deeply. "Kate, darling, don't forget I am Dimitri Kuznetsov. I'm used to all these situations. I'll be fine. Now, stop worrying about me and take care of yourself. I have to go now. I love you, Kate."
"I-I-"
"Love, don't say anything," I said, cutting her off. "We'll talk about all this feelings stuff when I come back."
I heard her let out a relieved sigh. "Okay," she said. "Be safe."
I then ended the phone call, focusing on my current business situation.
Kate
I missed him. I missed him more than I ever missed Elijah. With Elijah, I knew he was dead and won't be coming back. And as much as that thought grieved me, I had slowly accepted it as the truth.
But with Dimitri, I knew he was alive and breathing. And it was difficult not to think about him and hope and pray for his safety.
My feelings for Dimitri had changed. I was not okay with the fact that he killed Eli, but
I was trying to live my life with him. And even if it wasn't love, I still felt something for him.
I had already lost Elijah. I didn't want to lose Dimitri as well. I wasn't ready for that. Maybe I'll never be ready.
Before going to bed, I decided to call him. Although we had talked just a few hours ago, I still wanted to hear his voice again. I dialled his number and waited for him to pick up. It kept ringing and ringing. Soon I reached his voicemail. I tried calling again but it all went to voicemail
I was scared now. I felt my heart constricting inside my chest, as I thought about all the bad things that might've happened to him. An image of him lying on a cold floor, in a pool of his on blood, flitted across my mind and I started crying.
I was sobbing when I heard my phone ringing. I picked it up to see Dimitri calling me. I attended the call.
"H-H-Hello?" I stuttered, trying to control my sobs.
"Kate?" Sobs racked my body when I heard his voice saying my name.
"Kate? Kate, love, are you okay? Did something happen? Talk to me, Kate," he said worriedly.
I wiped away my tears and took in deep breath, trying to get my emotions under control. "I-I am fine, Dimitri," I told him, hiccuping.
"Why were you crying, love?" He asked, his voice soft.
"I miss you, Dimitri. I want you to come back to me."
"We already discussed this, Kate," he told me, sighing deeply. "I will come back as soon as I get rid of this whole situation. And I am trying my best to do it as quickly as possible. But you calling me like this, crying over the phone, and telling me you miss me, it just makes it all the more difficult for me."
"When will you come back?" I asked him.
"I don't know," he said.
"What do you mean you don't know?"
"Love, the whole situation is so fucked up that I don't even know if I'll be able to call you again, let alone come back to you. But all I know is that, it might take a few weeks, maybe even a month before we see each other again."
Hearing his words pained me and I took in a deep breath, not letting myself cry.
"Okay," I told him quietly.
"You should sleep now, darling. It's getting late."
"I'm not sleepy," I told him as I lay down on Dimitri's side of the bed. Inhaling his scent on his pillow, I allowed my body to get relaxed. I closed my eyes as Dimitri kept talking to me, telling me everything will be okay.
Before I finally drifted off to sleep, I heard him whisper, "I love you, Kate. And I will come back to you. Always."
And the promise in his words put my mind at ease, and my body succumbed to darkness.
