Chapter 16: That son of a bitch
Elara
"I do, and to be honest, I wish I didn't."
"Why would you say that?"
"They are one of the most powerful and most ruthless covens Elara, everyone fears them. Including my pack."
Elara put her burger on her plate and cleaned her mouth before leaning back into her seat. She took a deep breath and let it out. She wanted to know more about the Tiassili coven; she wanted to know more about her lineage, her powers, and if there was anyone out there that could help her master her powers. But did she want to be part of a ruthless coven? She reached into her pocket and took an elastic band with which she tied up her hair in a ponytail thinking about her fate. Since she was little, Elara would tie up her hair every time she had to think about something important, at first it started as a joke but growing up, it became a habit.
Looking around she met Nolan's blue gaze. He had stopped eating and was looking at her with confusion and concern. She found it sweet but also disturbing. This whole lunch at the Burger Hut with Nolan was disturbing. It seemed she was coming back to her senses. What am I doing here with him? He just rejected me, he doesn't want me, and I'm here eating lunch with him as if nothing happened? Letting out a sigh Elara closed her eyes trying to calm her nerves.
Everything about her life lately seemed to be confusing and she was always having a mixture of feelings. Am I becoming bipolar? She couldn't help but open her eyes again and look at Nolan. He was still watching her with those beautiful blue eyes of his.
"What happened?"
"I'm going crazy Nolan." She stated as a matter of fact and took a sip of her drink. "If I told you about the visions I've been having, you wouldn't believe me. Remember that day at school, when you caught me in a trance?"
"Yeah, when you broke down crying?"
"I somehow managed to unlock spelled memories in my mind. Memories I wasn't supposed to remember; something I shouldn't be able to do according to Laura. It was like my mind was under attack, and it was just too much to handle. My mom has been actively visiting me, spending time with me throughout the years. And she's been erasing my memories before leaving me every time. So imagine the wave of emotions I had to go through after seeing all of these memories in just a matter of minutes and also realize she's been alive all along."
Nolan stayed silent for a moment before getting up and sitting right next to Elara. He took her hands in his and brought them to his lips, giving them a gentle peck.
"I can't even imagine what it felt like. But I remember how broken you were and how bad it looked. I wish I could have done something to help you."
"But you did, you held me while I cried it out. Now that I think about it, today was the second time I felt this safe. In your arms. But you took that away when you broke the bond" she smiled at him trying to hide that it actually hurt her that he gave up on her. She didn't fully understand the prospect of being his mate but she was saddened by the whole rejection thing.
"I don't think I took it away Elara... you felt safe in my arms today and that was after I rejected you. Something feels wrong, I shouldn't still feel tingles all over every time I touch you, I shouldn't feel this attraction to you and I shouldn't be able to still smell that delicious aroma you send my way. But I do, and that is weird."
"How do I smell to you?" Elara leaned into him with a smile. Knowing he still felt things for her made her heart do a cartwheel.
Nolan smiled "You smell like melted caramel and a hint of vanilla. It's actually pretty addicting if I'm being honest."
Elara looked up at him and found herself drowning in the blue of his eyes. She touched his cheek and he immediately smiled showing his dimples. She knew it was wrong, she knew she shouldn't be so close to him after this morning but she was also very much aware that she couldn't stay away. Closing her eyes she gently pressed her lips against his feeling the butterflies go wild in her stomach. Nolan wrapped his arms around her bringing her closer, as close as the booth allowed him to.
Elara pulled away from him slowly and rested her head on his shoulder. It was as if she was saying goodbye to him. He rejected her, he didn't want her as a mate, which meant she couldn't keep kissing him and hugging him. All she wanted was one more moment with him before getting back to reality.
"Elara, I want you to know that Sean has been punished for biting you. He spent two nights in a cell, and he'll be there on each full moon until we are sure he can control himself. He also has only one more chance, if he messes it up he'll be banned from the pack. I know it's not enough, but that's all I could do. I'm not Alpha yet so..."
"Thank you, Nolan, it means a lot." She pulled away detaching herself completely from him and pulled out her phone from her pocket. "I'll text the girls and tell them I'm okay. School is almost over, I'll tell them to pick me up and bring my bag, I left it where you rejected me."
Elara: I know you want to kill me. I'm okay. I'm at the Burger Hut.
Laura: OMG!!! You are so dead!
Sophie: Leave her alone! We're glad you're okay. Do you want us to come over?
Elara: Could you pick me up? My bag is in the field at the outskirt of the woods.
Sophie: On my way.
Laura: I'm still killing you.
Elara smiled at her friend's text and put her phone away. She saw the waitress eyeing Nolan with a smirk. She was aware Nolan wasn't even looking at her, he was busy with his phone but she wanted to teach her a lesson. She thought about using her magic but then remembered what happened in the woods and changed her mind. She shouldn't be using her magic to hurt people, it wasn't who she was.
"Has Nora found her mate?"
"Yes, she was happy about it too. His name is David, he's a warrior in our pack."
"What if he was part of another pack?"
Nolan put his phone away and gave Elara all his attention "She would have to change packs and be part of his."
"So she was lucky she got to stay home... and she found a werewolf, like her. Not a human. I'm sorry you only got me."
"Only got you? Are you kidding me? If I knew you weren't just human, and that you'd be okay with it I would have never rejected you."
"So knowing I'm a witch changes things? Like do you regret rejecting me?"
"Yes, and no..." he took in a deep breath and let it out "Elara you're part of the Tiassili coven, that would have complicated things as well. So I still think I made the right decision..."
She was hurt more than she could ever admit it but she played it cool and plastered a smile on her face. Mostly because she wanted to know more about her coven, and she needed him to tell her what happened between his pack and the coven.
"I see, but may I ask why? I mean something obviously went down between the coven and your pack."
"Yes... we were on good terms with the coven for decades, wolves even mated with the Tiassili witches and would live on our territory. It was all good until fourteen years ago, one stupid wolf, killed his mate's sister. And she was a very powerful Tiassili witch. That wolf was banned from the pack and has been on the run since then. The Tiassili blame us because she was killed on our territory and they took it as a breach of the peace treaty we've had for decades. They said it was history repeating itself, whatever that means."
Elara listened to him intently, fourteen years ago was when her dad left, she was only four then. He never called or wrote or tried to contact her or her grandpa in all those years. She wanted to know who that wolf was, if he was from town, she might know him. Maybe her father left with him?
"What was the wolf's name?"
"I don't know Elara, I was only four when all this happened. I only know about it because I'm an Alpha to be and they have to give me information about my pack." He looked at her raising an eyebrow "I could look into it? We keep records of who got banned and why."
"Really?" when he nodded Elara smiled and pecked his cheek "Thank you so much!" she saw Sophie park her car in front of the diner. "And, thank you for today. For being there for me."
"Of course, that's the least I could do after... you know."
After rejecting me. Elara smiled and nodded before heading out of the Burger Hut. She didn't feel like leaving him. She didn't really want to go, but she had to. She wanted a moment with him and got it so now it was over. They would be back to partially hate each other. She reached Sophie's car and looked back into the diner one last time. Nolan was still watching her. She felt a pang in her heart as he looked at the waitress and smiled at something she said. Shaking her head she climbed into the car and saw her friend giving her a murderous look.
"Before you kill me, you need to listen! I was feeling really bad and I didn't know why but then I knew why and..."
"And what? you called Hulk instead of us?"
"Jeez, Laura! I didn't see you!" Laura was sitting in the back giving her a death glare. "I didn't call him! He found me in the woods by the stream... you know where I used to go with my mom when she was still...around"
"See! I told you we had to go to the stream but you just wouldn't listen!"
Elara watched as her friends started to banter back and forth and wanted to stop them but she caught a glimpse of Nolan getting in a car parked right next to theirs. He was with Sean. He looked at her one more time before Sean drove away. Elara closed her eyes and let out a heavy sigh "Please shut up!" she said as calmly as she could.
"You don't get to tell us what to do we're mad at you! We've been worried sick! And Sophie was going to call your grandpa!"
"Oh no, did you call him?"
"Of course not! I had my doubts about you being with a boy! But I had no idea you would be with Hulk!"
"Stop calling him that! And I wasn't with him, I just told you he found me!"
"Oh so instead of calling us you came here to have lunch with him? And why wouldn't I call him Hulk? That's what you call him!"
"Exactly, I get to call him that not you Laura. Now please just stop yelling! I'm sorry okay! I didn't mean to scare you, and you're right I should have texted sooner but I had so much on my mind, I had so many questions for him..."
Sophie leaned in and took Elara's hand in her left hand and Laura's hand in her right hand. She made Elara held Laura's free hand so they were forming a triangle.
"Both of you breathe. There is too much negative energy." She closed her eyes and started chanting something in latin, and both girls felt the negative energy leave their bodies.
"Now that we're all back to our senses," Sophie smiled "What was going on? Why did you leave campus?"
"Nolan is my mate. Well was, he rejected me."
"That son of a bitch!"
