Chapter 10: fireworks

Elara

Fireworks. That's what Elara felt in her stomach when Nolan crashed his lips on hers. She was intoxicated with Nolan's closeness and couldn't find it in her to push him away. To be honest, she only wanted more of him, she never wanted to break their kiss. A kiss like she never had before, she couldn't even compare it to the one she shared with Sean. Kissing Nolan felt more intimate and right.

The lighting came back and broke their spell as Elara slowly removed her arms from around his neck and gently pushed him back. She never noticed the lights were off in the first place. That's how intense the kiss was. Breathing hard, Elara slid down from the table and composed herself fighting the urge to look at Nolan. She couldn't trust herself not to pull him back to her and kiss him again.

Looking around she found her notes under a nearby table and picked them up before heading to where she was seated. Nolan was still standing where they were a minute ago and she could still make out the sound of his ragged breathing. She looked back at him just to make sure he was okay. She could see a storm brewing in his blueish-grey eyes.

"I... I'm sorry I touched you."

"What?" Nolan frowned. She couldn't blame him, her tongue was just in his mouth and she's apologizing for touching him?

"Nora... she told me you don't like girls touching you." She explained in a whisper. But for someone who doesn't like girls touching him, he's such a good kisser. Weird.

"Well Nora should have kept her mouth shut for once!" he snapped and gathered his backpack anger flashing in his eyes.

"She was just defending your actions... when you were mean to the cheerleaders. So don't act like a jerk!"

"So what, we share one kiss and now you're telling me what to do? Please... don't go obsessing over me as you did with Sean!" he spat with so much hate she had never seen in him before.

"Don't you dare say anything like that to me again Nolan! You kissed me!"

Her hands were fisted at her sides and she was glaring at him but all Nolan did was throw his head back and laugh heartedly.

"It was just a kiss and a bad one to be honest, something I would never want to try again" he smirked "I felt nothing. Get over it." He stormed out of the classroom before she could say anything.

She felt anger boiling within her, the burning desire she felt minutes ago dissolved into something foreign to her. With her hands fisted at her sides, Elara's body was shaking as a surge of power traveled through her, and the lights started flicking on and off like crazy until they just started exploding one after the other bringing her back to sanity. There was a blizzard of papers flying around and trashing the room. Elara grabbed her things and covered her head with her back before exiting the chaos that was happening in the classroom.

When she was in safety, she took a moment to lean over the wall and take a deep breath. A million thoughts running through her mind. What the hell was that? Did I start this? Now that she knew magic existed, she started thinking back to small incidents that have happened lately. First, there was Sean's car that engine went on fire after she wished it, then there was the ball that was never able to hit her face, and last but not least, there was the classroom's incident. All three happened when she was angry at someone.

"Shit!" she whispered reaching for her phone and texted her friends.

Elara: Are you still hanging out?

Laura: Yes, we are at Sophie's in the backyard.

Sophie: Coming?

Elara: On my way.

"Where do you think you're going, young lady?"

Elara turned to face Mr. Edisson "Detention is over half an hour ago Mr. Edisson" she explained and made her way to him handing him the paper she had written her notes on. It was a bit crumbled "I couldn't finish the book in two hours of course but here's what I have so far."

He wasn't impressed with the state of her paper but he seemed pleased with her notes as he read through and nodded. "You can send me a detailed email about it and maybe get extra credits in my class."

Elara nodded and excused herself but just as she was about to leave she remembered the classroom. The disaster she had made.

"Mr. Edisson?" She called after him and he stopped walking.

"Nolan trashed the classroom."

The three girls were laughing like crazies "I can't believe you pinned it on him!" Sophie exclaimed and laughed again laying back on the grass.

"What did you expect me to say? I just figured out I can do magic and trashed your classroom?"

They laughed again "He would have sent you to the nearest Psych ward" Laura butted before sitting up trying to catch her breath. "I knew you were a witch, the minute I saw that book with you."

"And you're a bitch for not telling us, your best friends that you are a witch as well! I mean if I hadn't rushed here to tell you what I had just experienced we would have never known about your hidden powers! Right, Soph?"

"Totally right. When were you planning on telling us?"

Laura looked between her friends back and forth not really knowing what to say. "Oh my God!" Elara exclaimed, "She wasn't planning on ever telling us!"

"To be honest I have always wanted to share my little secret with you, but put yourselves in my shoes. You wouldn't have done it either, it's not that easy."

"I know it's not, I felt like hell when I started 'seeing' things" Elara rolled her eyes "But I talked to you anyway, and after what happened today? I came here right away and told you without even knowing you were a witch. So no that's not an excuse."

"I was afraid you wouldn't have believed me." She started picking at the grass and Sophie nudged Elara.

"You could have tried, and if we hadn't believed you, you could have shown us," Sophie said softly and smiled "It's okay Laura we're not mad at you."

She let out a sigh of relief and leaned in hugging both of them "Thank god!"

When they broke the group hug, Sophie cleared her throat and sat up straight. "I'm going back to school tomorrow, I'm feeling way better, and in control."

They cheered in happiness and Laura made a small happy dance before sitting back down "how did you fix your blackouts?"

"I didn't fix them, Laura. I learned to control them." She took a deep breath "Witches, I need to tell you something"

"Did you hear her call us witches?" Laura grinned

"That was so cool" Elara laughed until Sophie cleared her throat again "Okay we're listening sorry"

"I found out I'm from a psychic family, each one of us has powers of their own." They both looked at her with open mouths but she ignored them "Apparently, my mother is a banshee, she can tell when someone is about to die. But it was driving her insane so she shut it off." she frowned a little "My sister can siphon magic from any magical being or artifact she touches. I, on the other hand, have the same power as my grandma, which was causing the sleepwalking, and the blackouts."

"Which is?" Elara asked in a low whisper not sure her friend even heard her. She couldn't believe both of her friends were from the supernatural world.

"I'm a necromancer." She announced and sat back down with a sigh as if the information was weighing too much on her chest. "I've been wanting to tell you the second I learned about it but I had to focus on my abilities in order to control them."

"Okay, so I'm just new to this whole supernatural world thing, so care to explain what a necro..."

"Mancer, necromancer" Laura cut in. She was still in shock. "A necromancer can conjure spirits..." when she saw the puzzled look on Elara she rolled her eyes but was patient with her knowing she never believed in all these things. "Dead people's spirits Elara, she can conjure them, speak to them..."

"I can also help the lost spirits find the light. That's why I was having blackouts, I was helping them without even knowing."

"Yes, but there is more..." Laura wasn't sure Sophie's grandma told her the whole truth "Some necromancers are powerful enough to raise the dead and bring them back to life. And..."

"Don't stop now..." Sophie begged her needing to know more.

"The people they bring to life become their servants, their pawns... Necromancy can be very dangerous. Just as being a witch with great powers!" she warned her friends "I'm serious, you need to really control your gifts before even trying to use them. You could get hurt, or worse hurt someone you love."

"The fire at your house... last year, was it you?" Elara asked her softly only to earn a nod.

"I was practicing a fire spell in my room even though my mom instructed me not to. But we all know how stubborn I am" she laughed a little "well it came out too strong and I burned the place down. We were lucky to make it out alive. Turns out, I can't control fire. I can light it, but can't control it. Other witches can, some can control all elements, like the enchantress you were reading about. Others can do basic magic and can't control any element. It all depends on their lineage."

"Wow, that is too much information for one day!" Elara got on her feet getting ready to leave. She needed to go see Marcus and get her laptop in order to do her homework. She didn't want to seem weak but she was scared. She didn't know what to make out of being a witch, or the fact her mother was alive hiding somewhere and always reached out and checked on her but erased her memory afterward, or even the fact she loved kissing Nolan but he was just another jerk!

"Wait where are you going?"

"Marcus, I need to get my laptop. Or a new one if he wasn't able to fix it."

"How will you go there?" Laura asked her with concern "It's already getting dark.

"Just like I came here, using my feet" Elara shrugged and was about to grab her bag when Sophie stopped her.

"You're hiding something Elara, You're leaving because you're afraid to tell us. What happened today?"

"Aside from turning into a witch? Nothing, oh yeah I had a temporarily mental and emotional meltdown because many of my childhood memories decided it was okay to pop out in the middle of a high school full of judgmental teens."

"So that's the reason you had your outburst in the detention room?" Laura asked raising an eyebrow.

Elara felt cornered, she hadn't told them about the kiss, she didn't want to tell them about the kiss. Not because she didn't trust them, but because talking about it would make it as real as she was.

"Nolan kissed me. Like full tongue and everything. It was fucking hot! But then he had to act all cocky and tell me it meant nothing and was a bad kiss" she blurted out quickly anger vibrating through her as she recalled the event. The wind picked up, fallen leaves started flying and Laura held Elara's hand.

"Calm down" she whispered "Think of something else, think of ice cream, you love ice cream right? That bubblegum ice cream Sophie and I hate" she laughed a little and let go of Elara's hand as soon as the weather was back to normal. "Looks like you control the wind just like me. That's weird; I took you more of a fire person"

"It's just the hair" Sophie teased as they both tried to lighten up her mood.

"Girls, since we're being honest with each other, I'd like to tell you both something about this town." They both looked at Laura expectantly "Elara, you were attacked by a wolf. Not a normal wolf though, it was a werewolf who lost control due to the full moon."

Elara threw her head back and laughed hard only to be joined by Sophie. She knew she was attacked by a wolf, she wasn't crazy, but a werewolf? That was new. "You don't expect me to believe werewolves are real right?"

"They are. Read the book of witches again, it will make more sense and hopefully, you'll find the blank pages filled out this time."

"Fine I'll check it out tonight but I still don'...." Laura cut her off starting to feel irritated.

"Nora is a werewolf!"
