Chapter 12
Rachel woke up from a deep sleep.
Man, she thought, I haven't gotten this good of sleep since I got here.
She jumped out of her canopy, nearly falling out with her new found energy. Her watch started beeping.
"Crap!" She ran to the Finders Shed and got quickly ready. After that, she raced toward the entrance where she was suppose to meet Jane, the Leader of the Finders.
"Sleep good, Flounder?" Jane said, her arms crossed.
"Sorry Jane," Rachel said with an edge to her voice. "And I'm not the Flounder anymore."
"Hm." Jane shrugged. "Good thing you didn't sleep too late since the Maze isn't open yet." As if it was summoned, the grinding of the door started, making Rachel jumped. Jane chuckled and Rachel wanted to bad to punch her in her primadonna face. "Let's go." Jane said, ignoring Rachel's glare.
As they jogged, Rachel could see Jane with a notepad and a pencil.
"What's that for?"
"Listen, kid. Just because you're here to replace Marie, a great second-in-command, doesn't mean I trust you. So, just cake it and run on."
"But, if I'm supposed to be doing something of the like to help you, shouldn't I know what you're doing?"
Jane groaned in frustration, but didn't respond. Rachel sighed, wishing Aris was here. He was probably having much better luck than she was.
After awhile, Jane stopped abruptly. Rachel ran into her, having been lost in thought.
"Wha-"
"Shh!" Jane was staring at a long corridor. Rachel could barely hear her as she said under her breath, "That wasn't there before..."
"What do you mean?" Jane grabbed her wrist and dragged her as she ran fast through it. "Jane!" She finally let go of her wrist after a few minutes and Rachel ran behind her. Something strange was happening inside Jane's head, Rachel knew it.
They stopped in a huge, open place. Walls were number 1-5. Jane squealed. Rachel walked to the edge of the walls, placing a hand onto one of the numbered ones. Instead of touching solid wall, a square went into it. A button.
"Flounder, no!" The walls and floors started moving. The ground grew spikes and the walls moved forward. Rachel ran to where they had come from, Jane at her heels. "What an idiot you are, Flounder!"
"My name is Rachel!"
They weaved in and out of corridors and corners, up and down walls, until they reached the entrance they came from. The walls were still moving as they drove into the grass. Once they caught their breath, Jane screeched through her teeth.
"You are always ruining things, Flounder! We have have just lost out chance out of here!" Rachel stood, fists balled.
"How was I supposed to know anything with you guys being to secretive!? I didn't know I would ruin things, I also most certainly did not choose to! Stop blaming everything on me! I don't know anything!!!" A crowd had formed. Rachel searched their faces, Aris no where to be found. He was probably still in the Maze. Did the moving walls affect where he was? Was he dead? Rachel didn't need to push through the crowd, they parted for her. They feared her. They feared Aris. For good reason, too. They were getting out of here, no one else. They'd leave these idiot blobs behind and gain their own freedom.
Without thinking, her feet led her to the creek. She kicked off her shoes and plopped down on the sand, letting the water dance around her feet. The numbers on the wall. The Code. That's how they were getting out. They just needed a plan on how. She would need Harriet and Sonya on this one.
