Chapter 10
"Okay," Sonya said. They were in front of the North entrance of the Labyrinth. Rachel gazed up and shuddered. It was huge. "Today, to calm the Glen Girls, we've decided you too could be helpful."
"We could?" Rachel said, deadpanned.
"Yes!" Sonya happily replied. "Do you remember if either of you are fast runners?"
"We don't really remember anything." Aris said, gingerly. "Same as you."
"Ah! Well, we'll put that to the test, now won't me?" She smiled. Rachel was scared.
"What are you going to do with us? Make us run from those weird alien things? Or-or chase each other down to the death?"
"Whoa, whoa, woah, Rachel. We're not savages." Soyna's face was scrunched in worry. "No, no, no. Nothing like that! Just a little friendly race." Aris and Rachel looked at each other. Really? A race? "Yes! A good old fashioned race."
"Why are you so eager for just a one-on-one race?" Now Rachel could sense discomfort in Aris' voice.
"Because we've made it a bit more... fun," Soyna giggled.
Oh gosh. Aris said. We're going to die here.
"From here, you'll run there," she pointed to what looked like the beginning of an obstacle course. "And try and beat the obstacle in record time."
"What happens if either if us win?"
"You'll replace Marie." Sonya said quickly, sadness hinting in her voice.
"That quick?" Aris almost yelled.
"We need to move on fast to survive, Glenner," she pulled out a watch. "You start..."
Man. I don't want to go against Aris... I don't want to do this at all.
"Now!" They took off at lightning speed. The obstacle course consisted of tire jumps, vine swinging, fence jumps, running through mud and soon, crawling in it. Wire dodge, and avoiding being pelted by whatever the other Glen Girls were throwing at them. It was a pretty well made course, for the materials they had anyway.
The last thing they had to do was swim and run back to where Sonya still was.
"Good job, Rachel! You won!"
"What?" Aris panted. "I clearly beat her by a mile."
"Well, too bad." Soyna giggled again. "You'll just have to be in another Finders group." Aris looked at Rachel but she was too exhausted to exchange more looks. "Well! Let's get you guys situated."
She brought them to a small shed behind the Meeting Place. There was boxes and weapons everywhere. That was an understatement. Rachel noticed amidst the mess a small latch at the back of the building.
Do you see that? Aris asked.
Oh yeah. It's perfect.
Rachel was still weary whenever she talked telepathically. It was all too strange.
Soyna grabbed two pairs of chest armor, shoes, and watches.
"To tell when the walls are about to close," They put the stuff on and Soyna grabbed other stuff.
"Where's Harriet? Shouldn't she be overseeing this?" Rachel inquired. She had been the one to call Aris and her over. Where was she?
"She's just doing Leader stuff."
"Okay..." she rolled her eyes. More secrets.
"Great, they fit!" Soyna examined them.
"So... we're not going out today?" Aris asked.
"No, silly."
