Chapter Six - Picnic In The Park
It's a bright sunny Saturday and I'm at home preparing a basket for a picnic. Bucky has been asked to fight for our country so today we are spending time together before he has to leave for two months. Sure I'm a little upset but I still have Steve and two months isn't that long.
"Buggie are you done yet?" Steve whines when he walks into the kitchen sitting in one of the chairs.
"Stevie we have plenty of time. Bucky isn't even here yet." I say while making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Steve huffs putting his chin on his hand.
"Are you going to miss Bucky when he leaves?" Steve asks and I freeze before taking a shaky breath.
"Of course I am but two months really isn't that long, right?" I ask then my voice cracks a little. Steve looks at me sadly before walking over and hugging me.
"It's going to be strange without Bucky here but we can still do things together like we always do." He says pressing a kiss to my head.
"I guess you're right Stevie." I say hugging him tightly.
We hear knocking then the door opens and footsteps get closer to us. When I look up I see Bucky and he looks amazing in his jeans and t-shirt with his leather jacket. He spots me then smirks before winking making my face go bright red.
"Hey buddy. How are you feeling about everything?" Steve asks as they have their bro hug.
"I'm excited but also nervous. I really don't want to be away from Becky but I'm also doing something to change the world by fighting for our country." He says and his eyes find me again. I feel a tear fall down my cheek then wipe it away before walking over to Bucky.
"You are doing the right thing Buck. It's going to be hard without you here for two months but I still have Steve." I say while Bucky hugs me then kisses my cheek.
"I will miss you the most doll." He quietly says but Steve hears and says "hey I'm your best friend so you should miss me the most." which makes me laugh.
Once I have sorted the basket out Steve and Bucky take the items while I put on a cardigan then we walk towards one of the parks close to the neighborhood. Bucky holds my hand tightly and I feel the fear he is feeling even though he is trying to put on a brave front.
"So have you got your orders yet Buck?" Steve asks and Bucky looks at him.
"Not yet. I won't find out until I've finished the two months of training." Bucky says. I feel my heart sink a little because it all seems to be real now. There is a War. The man I love will be leaving tomorrow for two months and this world is changing.
"You're being really quiet doll. What's on your mind?" Bucky asks and I shake my head.
"Nothing Buck. Oh look, there is a beautiful spot by the stream." I say then the boys shrug before we walk over.
Bucky places the basket down then Steve lays out the blanket. I look out over the stream watching the rays of the sun hitting the water creating a beautiful shine. I jump when someone puts their arm around me then look over and smile when I see Bucky.
"I know you're scared Buck. You're putting on a brave front in front of us because you don't want to show how scared you really are. The world is changing Bucky and there isn't much we can do." I say laying my head on his shoulder.
"Of course I'm scared. It's a War. Not just some back alley fight. Men are dying or getting seriously injured to the point they need surgery then get sent back home." He admits which makes me look up at him to see he is looking out over the water of the stream. His eyes look like bright blue crystals with the way the light from the sun is hitting them.
"That's also why I don't want Steve to enlist. If I do end up losing you I really don't know what I would do. With Steve it's different because he is my brother. If I ever lost him it would tip me over the edge." I say while tears sting my eyes and blink to stop them falling but it does the opposite.
"You won't lose me doll. I've promised you I will come back home to you. I will keep that promise. Becky I need you to do something for me and you have to promise you will." He says losing the playful, fun side and being serious. I nod while he looks into my eyes and takes my hands.
"I want you to promise to look after yourself while I'm gone." He says. I look down at our hands before looking back up into his eyes.
"I promise Bucky." I say quietly because my throat feels really tight while trying not to cry.
He smiles then wraps his arms around me before kissing me softly like it could possibly be our last before he is away for two months and before he gets shipped to fight on the front line.
"We better get back over to Steve." I say slightly breathless. He nods before putting me on his lap then he stands up while picking me up and walks over to Steve.
We see Steve leaning against one of the trees with his sketchbook out drawing something. Bucky puts me down then I walk over to him and sit beside him.
"Hey Stevie. What are you drawing there?" I ask. He looks up with a smirk shaking his head.
"It's a surprise Buggie. Is it time to eat because I'm starving." He says and I roll my eyes with a small laugh then nod. He smiles and stands up with me following then we walk over to Bucky who is getting out the food and arranging it on the blanket. He looks up and smiles then holds his hand out so I take it and he helps me to sit down.
"I want to make a speech. Tomorrow the one and only James Buchanan Barnes will be leaving to train for a good cause. Bucky is not only a friend to my brother but he is also the love of my life. I know these next two months are going to be hard but with a bond that the three of us have it will fly by. Here is to Bucky." I say looking at Bucky to see tears in his eyes and a sweet smile on his face.
"I love you doll." He says then kisses me softly. I smile against his lips stroking his cheek lovingly.
"I love you too, Bucky Barnes." I whisper when we part while looking into his eyes.
Today is the day Bucky is leaving for camp for two months and Steve and I are waiting with Bucky for the bus to turn up. I'm looking around at the families who have come along to see their sons', brothers', nephews', husbands', and dads' off. I feel tears sting my eyes again then look at Bucky talking to Steve.
"I'm going to miss you buddy. Look after my best girl for me." I hear Bucky say when I walk over to the boys.
"I've been looking after her since we were children Buck. Two more months won't be so hard." Steve says and I giggle which makes the two of them look over at me.
"There she is my best girl. I'm going to miss you doll. I'm going to miss looking into your beautiful eyes. I'm going to miss holding your hand and holding you tight. I'm going to miss kissing you tenderly while showing how much you mean to me. The thing I'm going to miss most is getting to hear you sing when you think no one is listening, hearing your stories and listening to you give your opinions on things. I know I said to Steve to look after you but I know you will look after him instead." Bucky says and tears slowly fall down my cheeks. He wipes them away then kisses me until we hear the doors of the bus open.
"Bucky please don't get yourself into too much trouble." I say making him laugh then he salutes before getting onto the bus. I stay in the spot he left me watching until the bus turns to a speck and tears still fall down my cheeks.
"Come on, let's go home Buggie." Steve says and I can tell he has also been crying.
"He's really gone, hasn't he? He has left me for two months." I say through more tears. Steve hugs me while I cry against his chest feeling like half of my heart and soul is missing.
Once the tears have slowed down Steve wipes my cheeks then presses a kiss to my head before we start walking home. We walk down the street and I see the tavern where I met Bucky for the first time smilinh at the memory. It only feels like yesterday we were hand in hand dancing to the music. It only felt like yesterday when we kissed for the first time.
"Hey are you okay?" Steve asks noticing I've been really quiet.
"I'm fine Stevie. I'm Just remembering the night I first met Bucky at the tavern. It only feels like yesterday we were dancing together and we kissed for the first time. These next two months are going to be hard." I say feeling my eyes sting again. Steve holds me close with his arm over my shoulder.
"He will be back before you know it Little sister. When we get home we can watch television and think about the moment Bucky comes home." He says and I look up at him then nod.
It's going to be different now. Bucky is gone and there is a War.
