Chapter Fourteen - Reuniting With Steve
The last twenty four hours fly by and the nerves along with the excitement overwhelm me as I get dressed in the uniform I had to pick up yesterday. Looking in the mirror I scan down the uniform and start to wonder what Steve's reaction will be when he discovers that his little sister signed up to be an Army medic.
Soon enough nine am arrives and along with heavy knocks on the front door. Taking a deep breath I pick up my bag then open the door to be greeted with three well dressed men and a black car parked at the bottom of the path.
"Good morning maam. Are you Miss Rogers?" One of the men asks and I nod. He nods and asks me to follow him and two others to the car.
"We are going to the airstrip then getting a plane to Europe where you will be taken to the One O Seventh Army base camp. You will meet your superior then get shown where you will be stationed." Another of the men says.
"Oh okay. I was wondering if you know my brother Steve Rogers?" I ask then all three men look at me before one of them chuckles.
"You mean that guy who has been the traveling comidic relief. Yes we know him. Why do you want to know?" The same man who asked who I am asks.
"I needed to know. I wanted to know that he is safe. Steve is the only family I have left after losing both our parents." I say with a glare then all three men laugh which makes my tempest rise. I close my eyes and exhale sharply out of my nose.
"Calm down Princess. We are sure he is safe since he is most likely doing his stupid little thing in another country pretending he is the hero." This makes me snap and I punch the man in the face. The other two men go silent as shock hits their system while the man I punched looks into my eyes.
We finally arrive at the airstrip and without waiting for the three men I get out of the car and make my way to the plane. As I walk up the stairs I look behind me to see the three men talking to someone so I walk straight onto the plane then sit in one of the seats.
"Hello I'm Jennifer. What's your name?" A dame with long blonde hair asks.
"I'm Becky. It's nice to meet you Jennifer. What Regiment did you apply for?" I ask and she beams.
"The One O Seventh. My boyfriend is fighting in the War. He has no idea that I'm going to be a medic. What about you? Anyone special in your life?" She asks which makes me smile a little.
"Same as you. The One O Seventh. My brother and boyfriend are both fighting in this War. They also have no idea that I've decided to be a medic either. I know my brother will lecture me the moment he finds out. My boyfriend Bucky he will most likely defend me like he always does." I say then feel a lump form in my throat just talking about them. Jennifer puts her hand on top of mine then starts to stroke along the knuckles.
"They must mean a lot to you for you to do this. Tell me more about Bucky." She says giving me another bright smile.
Once I've finished the story of how I met Bucky and how things are the plane lands in Europe and I'm suddenly filled with nerves. I walk off the plane feeling like my legs are about to give out at any moment and stand with the rest of the women. My eyes scan up and down the line until the one and only Howard Stark is standing in front of us.
"Hello you beautiful bunch. I'm Howard Stark but you probably already knew that. I will be showing you around the Army base, where you will be stationed and where you will be sleeping. Now I know a lot of you have loved ones fighting in this War but I need you all to focus on your tasks at hand." He says as his eyes scan the line until they land on me then a smirk appears on his face. He turns to a man standing next to him and whispers something into his ear before waving another person over. The moment I see her she smiles at me then Howard walks over with her.
"Hello sweetheart. I'm going to take a guess here and say you are the Captain's sister. I'm sure he told you that Agent Carter will personally take you to the Army base upon Steve's request." Howard says with a wink then Agent Carter playfully hits him.
"Take no notice of him. Also, call me Peggy. Steve has told us so much about you. What I want to know is why did you apply to become a medic?" She asks and I can't think of a reason.
"I guess it's because erm..." I say still unable to come up with the answer. She chuckles then says something to Howard before leading me to an open-topped jeep.
"Steve has no idea about this does he?" Peggy asks as we start the journey to the base.
"No he doesn't. I'm not supposed to be here for another two days but I miss Steve so much that I decided to become a medic. Also, my boyfriend is fighting in this War and I am hoping to see him again." I say then a blush creeps along my cheeks. Peggy gives me a knowing look before turning back to face the front as we approach the gates of the Army base.
Once we are through the gate the jeep turns off then Peggy and I get out. I see the other women being shown to the tents where we will be working while I follow Peggy. Where could she be taking me? She stops outside a big tent then opens it and walks in so I follow her.
"Agent Carter what are you do..?" A man asks as he looks at me.
"Coronal Phillips. I want to introduce Captain Rogers' sister Becky. She was requested by the Captain himself to be personally brought here by myself." Peggy explains and this Coronal Phillips looks me up and down without his expression changing which makes me feel uneasy.
"Okay fine. Take her to one of the tents then tell Rogers someone is here to see him." The Coronal says then walks out of the tent.
"Don't worry about him and his harsh attitude. He isn't all that bad once you get to know him. Come on, I will take you to your tent then we will go and see Captain Rogers." Peggy says as she gives me a friendly smile. I nod then follow her out of the tent and down a dirt path until we reach a little campsite with at least fifty tents.
Once Peggy has shown me the tent I will be sleeping in we make our way to the other side of the Army base. On the way I see many men who have had to have medical attention due to bullet wounds, premature explosions from grenades and many more things that could cause serious damage.
"Are you okay?" Peggy asks which brings me out of my own mind and I give her a tight lipped smile with a nod of my head. She doesn't look too convinced but doesn't ask any more questions as we continue our walk. As we approach a stage I see Steve bent over his small book that he carries everywhere then look at Peggy and she nods her head.
"Hey Stevie." I say the moment I know he can hear me and watch as his head shoots up then whips around to face me.
"Oh my God. When did you get here? You aren't meant to be here for another two days." He asks as he engulfs me in his now muscular arms and nearly crushing me. I giggle then wrap my arms around his torso as tears start to fall down my cheeks.
"I thought I would surprise you. I've missed you Stevie." I say then we part and he wipes the tears from my eyes with a smile.
"I've missed you too, Buggie. Wait... why are you in that uniform? Please tell me you didn't." He asks as he loses the smile and it is replaced with a frown.
"Steve I needed to do something to be here with you and Bucky. Where is he?" I ask then I look around to see if I can find him. Steve takes my hand which makes me look back at him to see what I don't want to see in his blue eyes.
"We haven't heard from Bucky in a while but I'm sure he is okay. Come on, we have a lot to talk about and I want a proper explanation as to why you thought enlisting as a medic would be a good idea." He says which makes my heart drop.
While walking through the Army base I can't help but to think about Bucky and hope he is safe out there. I will lose myself if I lose Bucky. He made a promise to come back to me. Steve notices I'm quiet and he stops walking then puts his hand on my arm.
"I can hear your thoughts Buggie. Bucky is fine." Steve says which makes me look up at him which is still weird because I used to have to look down at him before he left.
"I hope he is Steve. Anyway, I still hate you for leaving me too." I say which makes him chuckle with a shake of his head.
"I'm doing what I've always wanted. I'm doing something for our country." He says and I raise an eyebrow while looking at the uniform he is wearing.
"Yes because wearing tights and touring is definitely helping in the War." I sarcastically say with a roll of my eyes. Steve laughs as he shakes his head before gently pushing me and I smile because it does feel good to be with my brother again.
"The stocks go up by ten percent in every state I visit so in a way it's kind of helping." He says with a smile.
"Captain Rogers may I talk to you for a minute?" We both turn around to see Peggy then I notice a light pink blush appear on my brother's cheeks. Oh this is too good.
"Sure thing Agent Carter. I won't be long Buggie so just sit on these steps and I will be over soon." He says not taking his eyes off of Peggy which makes me smirk.
"God Steve stop being weird. Oh and use protection too." I say which makes the blush go a shade darker and Peggy giggles uncomfortably. He shoots me a glare then walks over to Peggy while I go over to the wooden steps to wait for Steve.
After twenty minutes Steve joins me and sits beside me. I look at him to see he has a smile on his face. What did Peggy say to him? He looks at me and the blush returns so it must be something personal between the two of them.
"Well, are you going to tell me or not Steve?" I ask. He shakes his head with a chuckle then he puts his arm over my shoulder and pulls me to his side before getting out the little sketch book I sent with the letter I sent a few days before finding out I would be coming here and shows me a picture he drew.
"Steve this is beautiful." I say as I look at every line and take in every detail then look up at him and wrap my arms around his neck. He takes the book from me and stores it in his pocket then holds me in his arms.
"I know you used it as a distraction though so I would forget about my question." I say then chuckle when he exhales a laugh through his nose.
"Okay, okay. Peggy wants to go dancing once the War is over and I told her I don't know how to dance." He says and I wiggle my eyebrows at him which makes him scoff and push me. I slightly slip but manage to get my footing again before playfully glaring at him.
"That was just mean Stevie. I could have hurt myself or should I say you could have hurt me." I say and pout which makes him laugh a little.
