Chapter Five - Howard Stark's Expedition

Bucky and Steve are talking again since their small disagreement a week ago. We are doing a small bit of grocery shopping because I'm having to cook before we go to the Expedition tonight. Steve and Bucky have been constantly talking about it for the past two days which I have learnt to tune it out.

"It's going to be so cool. It will be like taking a look into the future." Bucky says and Steve hums in agreement.

"Howard Stark is a man who is a genius. He also knows that the dames fawn over him but I don't see the appeal. To me he is a big headed, over egotistical, rich boy throwing his money about to impress people." I say paying for some carrots. Bucky and Steve look at me shocked before Bucky shakes his head.

"That man has given us so much." Bucky tries to argue and I look at him.

"If that was the case James, why hasn't he put his money into helping people who have been hit with a financial blockade and help them out instead of putting on an Expedition?" I ask. Bucky looks at Steve who also seems to be speechless. I smirk while picking out the ripest of the apples. I plan on making an apple pie for dessert.

"Wow, you really don't like Howard Stark, do you?" Steve asks and I roll my eyes.

"It's not that I don't like him. It's just he could use the money he has to help the less fortunate people of Brooklyn." I say putting the apples into a bag.

"You have a valid argument but Howard Stark has also made weapons for our Soldiers to fight this War." Bucky says and I snort. I look at the shopping list completely ignoring Bucky's small and obvious observation crossing off some of the items I have then read the rest:

Potatoes
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Flour
Sugar
Chicken
Milk
Fresh bananas

I fold the list up and put it into my bag before walking through the stalls to find the majority of the things left on my list before walking into the small convenience store to get the rest.

"Hello Becky. Is that all for today?" Charlie asks bagging up the items.

"Sure is Charlie. Will you be going to the Expedition tonight?" I ask giving him the money.

"Unfortunately not. I can't close the store early because it will really put more pressure on myself to keep it open." He says with a sad smile.

"I really hope it's all sorted soon. Well I better go. Steve is most likely trying to cook and I don't trust him. His cooking skills aren't the best. I'm worried he will burn the house down." I say with a giggle and Charlie laughs.

As I walk home I see posters with"We Want You!" written on them with a guy pointing his finger. I was always taught that pointing is rude. I shake my head then continue my journey home praying to God Steve hasn't tried to start cooking. He isn't the best cook in the world but he does try.

"I'm home!" I call out walking in the front door. Bucky walks over and takes the bags from me then carries them into the kitchen while I take off my coat and scarf hanging them on the small hook.

"Did you get everything you need?" Steve asks the moment I walk into the kitchen. I look at him with the same look mum used to do as to say "obviously or I wouldn't be here right now." which makes Steve chuckle and shake his head.

"You really are so much like mum. She would pull the same face." Steve says hugging me.

"I am our mother's child Steven. Now you two go into the living room or go to your bedroom while I start making the apple pie for dessert." I say. The moment the two of them hear the two words "apple pie" Steve smiles brightly while Bucky looks at me admirably with a sweet smile.

"Using mum's recipe, right?" Steve asks and I playfully glare at him.

"Of course. How else will I be making it? Now out." I say while shooing them out of the kitchen. I hear Bucky chuckle then say "I'm definitely going to marry her one day" making my cheeks tint pink.

Right, now... where is the book? I look in the tall pantry then groan when I see the book is on the highest shelf. How am I supposed to get it down?

"Steve could either you or Bucky come here please?!" I call out. The moment I hear footsteps I turn around to see Bucky and shyly smile when he smirks at me.

"What do you need doll?" He asks. I point to the shelf then he nods before reaching up to get it for me.

"Thank you Bucky." I quietly says. As he gives it to me our fingers brush making my heart nearly jump out of my chest.

"You're welcome doll. I shall leave you to continue." He says when I put the book onto the counter and look up at Bucky before sighing.

"What's wrong?" He asks taking my hands in his. I shake my head because it's stupid. Obviously not to Bucky because he asks me again.

"I just remember when both Steve and I were children and would help our mum bake an apple pie. That book, it holds all of her recipes for different desserts. This is the first time in two years that I've used it. Also the first time in two years I will be baking apple pie alone." I say clearing my throat when he tenderly wraps his arms around me and lays my head on his chest.

"She would be so proud of you and Steve. You really are a strong dame and your mother must have been too. I bet she was also beautiful just like her daughter." He softly says and I giggle sadly.

Steve walks out and sees Bucky and I cuddling then sees the tears in my eyes. At first he goes to say something to Bucky before he sees the book then realises why I'm trying not to cry.

"Hey come here Buggie." He says. I move from Bucky then cuddle Steve while Bucky watches the brother, sister moment with a sad smile while leaning against the counter.

"Steve, do you think mum would be proud of me? I knew she was always proud of you because you would get good grades and do all your homework. She would always compliment you on your art too. I felt like I was the least loved child because I didn't meet her standards like you did with everything." I say burying my head against him.

"She would be really proud of you. You've got better and you've learnt so much from mum. She is most likely with dad watching over us and they are both smiling." Steve says which only makes more tears fall down my cheeks.

Once I've calmed down Steve and Bucky leave me in the kitchen to start baking the apple pie. I would have made a different type of dessert but I just couldn't afford to. Being in one of the poorest parts of Brooklyn we don't get the luxury of being able to afford the expensive food like the upper classes.

Once the pie is made I put it into the fridge before peeling the vegetables for dinner. It's only three thirty pm now and the Expo doesn't start until eight so I have five hours to make sure everything is cooked for both of the men who are now sitting in the living room.

While peeling the carrots I start to quietly sing under my breath then sing along to one of my favorite songs on the radio a little louder.

"Dearly beloved, how clearly I see,
Somewhere in Heaven you were fashioned for me,
Angel eyes knew you,
Angel voices led me to you
Nothing could save me,
Fate gave me a sign
I know that I'll be yours come shower or shine
So I say merely,
Dearly beloved be mine."

"Steve wasn't wrong when he said you can sing doll." I turn around to see Bucky leaning on the doorframe. I shake my head with a small giggle before he walks over and wraps his arms around my waist.

"How long were you standing there?" I ask putting the peeled carrots into the pan on the stove and the peels in the trash.

"Long enough to hear you sing beautifully doll." He says then turns me around. I look into his eyes with a shy smile while he tenderly strokes my cheek.

"Bucky what's taking you so lo..?" Steve asks then stops when he sees Bucky and I really close.

"I heard your sister singing. You weren't wrong Steve." Bucky says and I roll my eyes. Steve looks at me with a smile then chuckles.

"That's why she should perform. She is amazing just like our mum was. I remember when Becky and I were children and we used to share a room. Mum would come and tuck us in then sing us a lullaby. Oh, what was it again?" Steve asks looking at me.

"Lullaby To A Little Jitterbug. Mum really was an amazing singer." I say with a smile while tears sting my eyes.

"Could you sing it for us?" Steve asks. I look at him then smile a little and nod. Both men sit at the table while I look down then start to sing.

"Do-do-do, do-do-do-do
Little jitterbug don't cry
You'll be swingin' by and by
You are just a tiny tot
And until you've grown a lot
Your rattle will have to do

Little jitterbug go slow
You'll be rockin' 'fore you know
Daddy won't be home 'til dawn
When he left, he took his horn
Someday you will have one too

If you're like your Pa,
Sonny, you'll go far
My you'll look grand
Leadin' a band
Foolish it may be
But this dream's on me
And it's for you
Make it come true

Little jitterbug it's dawn
Why dream a dream of Daddy's horn
If you're good and go to sleep
He will give you one to keep
Little jitterbug go sleep

Sonny, go to sleep
Swing will always keep
When you're of age
You'll top the page
Listen to your Ma
'Cos she taught your Pa
His swing is true
Yours will be too

Little jitterbug it's dawn, ah-ha-ha,
Dream a dream of Daddy's horn
If you're good and go to sleep
He will give you one to keep
Little jitterbug, go sleep,
Little jitterbug, go sleep."

Bucky and Steve smile while I wipe a few tears then Bucky walks over and hugs me.

"That was beautiful doll. Maybe one day when we have children of our own, you could sing them that lullaby." He whispers which makes me giggle slightly.

We arrive at the Expo and Bucky has his arm around my waist but other dames keep trying to flirt with him making me jealous. I'm lucky Bucky isn't taking any notice of them but Steve is still acting like he is.

"Bucky!" A female voice calls. I look around to see who it is. The moment I see her I frown then see her walk over.

"Bucky Barnes how are you?" She asks and I throw her a death stare.

"Gillian, I've told you to stay away from me. We were a one night thing and that was two years ago." Bucky says. I turn to look at Steve and mouth "well, don't blame them." to which Steve shakes his head.

"I tried to call you Buck." She says then looks at me with a look of disgust.

"Who is she?" She spits and I growl at her quietly.

"This is my girlfriend. You will show her some respect." Bucky sternly says which makes me look at him to see anger written all over his face.

"Why would you want her when you could have me?" She asks trying to push me away until Steve steps forward so she couldn't get closer to Bucky.

"Well, if it isn't Steve Rogers? Still haven't got a girlfriend yet Stevie? I guess a loser like you wouldn't be good enough." She says. That's it. She can say shit about me but no one and I mean no one talks about my brother like that.

"You better shut that mouth of yours sweetheart. No one and I mean no one talks about my brother like that. You're jealous because Bucky doesn't want you so you resort to bullying my older brother." I say pushing her. From behind me I hear Steve groan because he knows I'm protective of him then hear Bucky chuckle with a low whistle.

"You're related to Steve? Wow, you are most likely just as pathetic as he i..." She says. I push her into a wall and pin her. Before I get the chance to seriously hurt her both Bucky and Steve run over and pull me away before making me walk away.

"Jesus doll. What was that?" Bucky asks but I hear the pride and amusement in his tone.

"No one disrespects my brother. Why did you stop me? That bitch deserves to be taught a lesson." I say breathing heavily and still filled with anger. Bucky turns me around then looks into my eyes melting the anger inside before gently kissing me. I feel my whole body relax then put my hands on his chest while one of his hands caress my cheek and the other is on the small of my back.

"Come on doll, let's walk over to see what Howard has for us." Bucky says when we part from the kiss.

The three of us walk over and I keep looking at Steve because we walked past an Army enlistment tent. I don't want my brother to enlist because it would leave me on my own. There is also a chance Bucky could get deployed if the War requires us to fight.

Once we get close enough I see a car then see Howard Stark explaining about cars of the future that may not even need to have wheels to drive.

"Holy cow." Bucky whispers when the car lifts from the ground. Honestly I'm quite surprised too. The car falls then Howard just chuckles.

"I did say it will be a few years did I not." He says making everyone laugh.

"That was pretty cool. Don't you think so Steve?" I ask turning around to see my brother isn't behind us.

"For the love of God. Buck I think Steve may have gone to the tent we saw." I say rolling my eyes. Bucky shakes his head then we go to find my brother.

"Jesus Steve. You won't get accepted because of your Asthma. They will just reject you again." I say when I find him.

"I have to try Becky." He says and I huff while trying to keep my temper. Bucky watches the argument then takes my hand to calm me down.

"She is right Steve." He says and I look up at Bucky with a thankful smile. Steve rolls his eyes then shakes his head.

"What am I supposed to do? Men are laying down their lives out there and I don't want to work in a factory." He says and it's my turn to roll my eyes.

"Come on, let's go dancing to forget about all of this." I say and Bucky nods while Steve shrugs.
