After dancing with the bride,
I made up my mind to take responsibility of the food service. This was my strategy to find Freddy. I had a feeling he would be in the reception. Therefore, I would serve all the guests so I could locate him. I got the silver tray and resumed my duty as a waitress in a gorgeous sleeveless yellow mermaid gown.
Though it has mud stain because of a certain guy and a certain shoe that broke. I know you get the point. My life eh!
Men enjoyed my service. They took the opportunity to check me out. Some asked for my name or phone number but I made it clear that I wasn't interested.
I was still serving. I was filled with determination.
I must find Freddy. Come what may.
"Naomi, why are you serving food na? Johanna's father paid waiters to do that!" Divine whispered to me. She licked the tomatoes sauce on her fingers and added. "Enjoy your life and stop doing oversabe!"
"I want Johanna's wedding to go well. That's why I'm doing this?" I replied.
"Did they send you? No one asked you to do it. Come and sit down!" she picked fried chicken from the plate in front of her and cocked a brow at me. She and some of herr friends were settled in one of the tables.
"I'm fine. I'm enjoying myself. Bye!" I waved and scurried off. I know that I I had stood there, she would keep insisting that I joined her. Divine had kept to her words. She was devouring every food that cane in contact to her.
However, I started my food service from the left and kept moving forward. The groom and bride were dancing when I spotted a man with beard wearing a pink suit. I traced the person and figured out that it was Freddy. At that time, I froze with a plate of jollof rice in my hand that I was about to give a guest.
"Madam, you have not given me food oo! What are you looking at?" the middle-aged woman snapped.
I turned my gaze to the woman. "I'm coming!"
"That's what everyone is saying. Won't you serve food for this table?" she sneered.
I lifted a brow and looked at the table. Nine people, both children and adults occupied the table. I frowned. "We have a way we serve. I'm starting from the left to the right. We will serve you soon"
She hissed. "Get it sharp sharp!"
My eyes went back to the crowd. Freddy was dancing with the groom. I gave one of the children the plate of rice I was holding, returned the tray and rushed to the crowd. I wiggled my way through the crowd and my hand was lucky to brush Freddy's arm. He gave the groom a bro hug and the M.C announced everyone to return to their seats. I could not see him again so I resumed serving the food.
The passing-on the bonquet by the bride began. The M.C declared that all the single ladies should gather at the stage.
You're single. My conscience told me.
But I'm not ready to get married.
They said all the sibgle ladies should come out. They didn't ask you if you are ready.
I sighed and dropped the tray on the table. "I'm coming. I will get your food soon!" I told the man that sat upright, waiting for his food with eagerness.
A Nigerian love song played and the bride tossed her bonquet of flowers backwards. A lady caught it but that was not what surprised me. I was dumbfounded when a young man proposed to her. Mia screamed, "God when!"
"Awwn!" the crowd chorused and applauded. I felt different after that. Like I suddenly wished it was me. You had to see the way the guy looked at that girl. He looked at her with love in his eyes. If that lady had said no to his proposal, I was sure he would faint.
All the single ladies returned to their seats while I went back to serve the hungry man. Fortunately, I got to his seat. Yes! Freddy! Thank God! I served him his dish which was jollof rice.
He narrowed his eyes at me as I dropped the plate at his front.
"What?" I mumbled.
"We meet again!"
Yeah! I made sure we met again.
"I didn't expect you to be a waitress!" he chuckled.
Automatically, I rolled my eyes and retorted, "I volunteered to help, idiot!" My eyes widened when the words left my lips. After seven years, I still have it in me to give a rude remark when Freddy teases me. I can't believe it. Well, you can't blame me. Freddy has a way of getting on my nerve.
"Hmm...Sorry! Didn't mean to be rude!" I voiced.
Naomi is a fool! Naomi is a fool! Everyone join me and sing this song becos I'm really a fool. I'm meeting him after a long time. Instead of being sweet, I'm the opposite.
"How's your yellow dress? Don't you think your job as a waitress will leave a stain?" he tilted his head as he regarded me.
"I'm being careful!"
"Not really!" he pointed at a red splotch on my yellow dress.
I gasped and glared at him. "This is all your fault!"
"H...How?" he rose a brow.
"I did this waitress stuff to find you!"
"Why?"
"Don't you remember..." I yelled but was interrupted when Mia gripped my arm and pulled me away.
"There are other people to serve oo. No time to chat!"
"But..."
"No buts!"
"Wait!" I tried to pull myself away but she pulled me back into the area where the food were arranged.
"Naomi, what is wrong with you? We need to serve the food!"
"But I don't want to. There is something else I want to do that's more important!"
She narrowed her eyes at me. "And what is that?"
"Freddy!"
Her eyes widened. "The guy you have been looking for?"
"Yes!"
"What are you still doing here? Go and get him"
I smiled and ran out. I got to the exact spot but Freddy was not there.
"Where is Freddy?" I asked the guy I earlier saw beside him.
"He has somewhere to go. Why did you ask?"
"He is leaving?"
"Yes! But...where...I...."
"He has a girlfriend ooo!" He added at once.
My back stiffened as my eyes drilled into his. "That's not it!" I forced myself to say. "Tell me where he passed!"
"Hmm...." he pointed at a white door. "There!"
I ran to the door, pushed it open and ran outside. I saw Freddy driving out in a white car. I increased my pace. Luckily, he saw me running and paused. He lowered the glass at his door and asked, "Did I forget something?"
I froze and looked into his eyes. My brows drew together and I replied, "Yes! You forgot something!"
"What?"
"Me!"
He cocked a brow and our eyes met in an intense gaze. Though Freddy looked more of confused.
He stopped his car and got down. "What do you mean?"
"Don't you remember me? We went to the same highschool!"
"Really?"
"Yeah!"
"So you were in America?"
"Huh...What?"
His phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID and sent an apologetic look at me. "Sorry! I need to leave now or else I'm miss my flight".
"Flight?"
"To America!"
"Will you be back?"
He shrugged.
"Are we going to meet again?"
"Missy, I don't know but bye! See you later!"
I froze. See me later? Are we going to meet again.
He flashed a truly Freddy-like smile and hopped into his car. I found myself smiling.
I feel optimistic about this. Maybe we will truly meet again.
