°•°Freddy's POV°•°
"Come on, darling. Talk to me," Kate cooed and ran her long nails down my arm. I ignored her and opened the door of my hotel room. Before I could shut it, Kate dashed in and ran to my bed. She made herself comfortable on it and smiled at me.
I responded with an eyeroll.
"Okay, Freddy! Why are you angry with me?"
I didn't reply.
"Please, I'm sorry"
I didn't reply.
"Please, just tell me"
"The way you treated Naomi," I replied at last.
"How did I treat her? What do you mean?" She exclaimed, a hint of anger in her voice.
"Kate, you said we dated in our Nigerian high school, right?"
She paused, took in a deep breathe and nodded frantically. "Yes! We dated. You always called me Cupcake!"
"Then, why don't you remember Naomi? She said we attended the same highschool in Nigeria?"
"We did. I do remember her"
"Yesterday, you didn't treat her well. You pushed her when you were rushing into the car. What if you had hurt her?"
"But I didn't hurt her."
"Naomi and I are friends. The way you treated her made her feel unwelcomed. She didn't even join us for lunch that day. I haven't even seen her today. I just hope she isn't avoiding me because of you"
"What? Must she eat lunch with us? Must you talk to her?"
"She's my friend"
"I'm your girlfriend"
"That means in our Nigerian highschool, you weren't Naomi's friend," I concluded.
"Not that...um...well...Yeah! We weren't close"
"Why?"
"Naomi isn't the good girl she pretends to be. I know that. You just don't know her true color"
I folded my arms against my chest. With a scowl, I said, "Please enlighten me. What kind of girl is she?"
"I don't want to ruin your friendship," she shrugged. "I can't tell you. Instead, I will give you your chance to discover yourself".
I scrutinized her expression but I couldn't read it. I walked to my mini fridge and took out a can of malt drink. When I looked at her, I almost choked on my drink. She was looking at me like an angry lioness ready to pounce. Her furious glare scared the life out of me.
"What's wrong?" It was my turn to ask.
"Why are you befriending Naomi?"
"Is that why you are..."
She cut me short. "Why?"
"I don't see why not!"
"But...But you don't know her that well"
"I like her vibe. We relate well"
"Oh!" she snorted and bit her bottom lip.
"You don't have to be jealous. I don't like her. You are my only girlfriend"
She flashed a smile.
I just have to keep her happy or she might tell my mom a fake story that will make her angry. I don't want my mom to worry about my dating life. She has gone through a lot. I don't want her to fall ill.
I sipped from my drink and sat beside her. "Kate, I still have that dream!" I said and ran my fingers down my hair.
"What dream?"
"The one...." I trailed off as images popped in my mind of last night. It was always so hard to interrupt those dreams. But since Kate remembers my past life, she will know the answer. "The dream about....um...the mystery girl".
In an instant a frown appeared on her face but she replaced it with a smile. "You dreamt about me?"
I was silent. Why is Kate so secretive? Her expressions are always complicated. A moment she might be smiling and then she frowns. What's going on in her head?
"Freddy, did you dream about me again?" she squealed.
"Do you really think you are the mystery girl?" I cocked a brow.
"Of course it's me. I'm the only girl you have ever called Cupcake. In your dream, you call that mystery girl cupcake. That's me. Kate!"
"Then why can't I have a clear image of the mystery girl? I only see a blurry image of a girl. If you were the girl, I should have regained all my memories related to you, right?"
"Freddy darling, you worry too much"
"I've just been having the dream recently"
"See! I know why. It's because we are in Nigeria and we are together. I'm sure it's bringing some kind of flashback to you. I'm the girl you dream of. Your cupcake. Freddy, it hurts me that you don't remember me. It hurts alot"
"Hmm..." I rubbed my hand down my face. "Let's end the topic now".
"Kiss me!"
"What?"
"Kiss me, Freddy. Why don't you always kiss me?"
"Cos I respect you"
"What? That doesn't make any sense"
"I'm not the kissing type," I lied. Definitely a lie. The fact is I don't cheat. I'm loyal to Kate. The only problem here is that I just see her as my sister. Not my girlfriend.
Eight years ago, Kate was at the hospital while I was in a coma. She always supported my mother during her hard time. She even got her father to help us financially. Even when I regained conscious, she was always around supporting my mother and me. Two years ago, my mom found out that Kate was in love with me. She forced me to give Kate a chance and to ask her out. I did and then my mom forced me to date her. I did that. I feel like I'm indebted to her and that this is my way of paying her back. It sounds stupid but that's how I feel.
"Freddy, please kiss me," she leaned close to me and placed her hand at the nap of my neck, pulling her lips close to mine.
"Anyways, I do feel the urge to eat cheese balls. Got to go," I exclaimed and hopped to my feet.
"Aren't you going to kiss me?"
"Cheeseballs. When I eat one, I'll think about it"
"Do you even love me?"
"Yes!" As a sister.
"Fine! Go and get your cheeseballs. I'll stay in your room"
"Okay! You have the spare key right?"
"Yes!"
"Bye. See ya soon." I picked my key. Just like that, I was out the door and down the hallway. I got to the parking lot and hopped into my car. Before I could get my car running, my phone rang. I pulled it out of my pocket and smirked when I saw the caller ID.
"Yo, Dennis! How you doing bro?" I greeted and chuckled.
"I'm searching for a hot Abuja Babe!" he replied and groaned.
"In Lagos? You can't find any in Lagos, dude!"
"I'm in Abuja right now. On my way to your hotel. Surprise! Surprise. I hope you have beer there"
"Son of a monkey! You're here?" I exclaimed.
"At the front of your hotel"
"Fuck you, dude! How dare you surprise me like that?"
"I didn't expect that reply. Don't you miss me?" he said in a fake high-pitch voice.
"Ah! I have forgotten about you dude. Who are you again?"
"Fuck you!" he snorted.
"Anyhow! I'm driving out now. I will meet you at the gate. Did you bring your car?"
"Yes! But I can park it. Where are you off to?"
"Food!"
"Dude, how can you read my mind?"
"I don't know. How?"
"We must be lost brothers"
I laughed at once but paused.
Wait! I lost my memories. What if he is actually my brother.
I glanced at my phone and thought of the chance that we might be related. "That's absurd! I need to drive now. Bye!"
"Hey, what's so wrong with us being brothers?"
"Bye, Dennis! I need to drive the car out. Don't you need food?"
"Oh, food! Sure" He terminated the call. I dropped my phone and skillfully drove the car out of the tight parking lot and through the big gate. I met Dennis and he hopped right into the car.
"So what are you doing here?"
"I got a contract with a networking company. They want a computer genius like me among them"
I cocked a brow and asked teasingly, "Who is the computer genius here? You? Wow! That company just made the biggest mistake of their life"
Dennis glowered at me.
"What?"
"You are so ungrateful. Don't forget I repaired your laptop when it spoilt. I even did it for free," he yelled.
"You did? I don't remember that ever happening"
"Freddy, no joke like that for here o. I am a computer genius and you need to accept that fact"
I chortled and shrugged.
"Wow! Slow down!" Dennis exclaimed as he pressed his face to the window at his side. "Oh my Lord. See African Queen. Freddy, slow down". He quickly lowered the glass of the window and poked his head out. He whistled and asked, "Do you need a ride, beautiful?"
I rolled my eyes. "Can you tune down on your playboy act? I need Cheese balls right now"
"Dude, you are screwed up. What are you doing with Cheese balls?" Dennis sneered, his eyes on the woman. I stopped the car so he could freely perform his playboy act. The woman ignored him and kept moving. That's when I noticed the other lady beside her.
Naomi! Just perfect!
Now, I was the one whistling. They assumed we were jerks and didn't even glance at us.
"Hey, Naomi!" I called out. Her head snapped at my direction and a brow shot up at the sight of me. She smiled and waved at me. I couldn't help but smile back. Her smile is so contagious. She always seems genuinely happy when she sees me. I do like that.
"Dude, how far na? You know them?" Dennis asked.
"Just the other one. She is the girl at that wedding. Do you remember?"
"Which weddi....Oh, Okay! I remember"
Naomi walked to us and stood by the car. "Hi!" she said. Kind of awkward. Why is she acting weird.
"What's up? Did you forget about your handsome friend?" I waggled my brows.
She hissed and rolled her eyes. "Handsome my foot!"
Yep! That's the Naomi I know. She has this ability to catch my attention. Now, I just want to spend time with her.
"Hop into the car. Let me give you a free ride"
"Nope! I don't want one!" She waved a dismissive hand and sashayed away with her friend.
"What just happened?" Dennis asked. He scrunched his face in confusion.
"That's Naomi. An interesting woman, I tell you," I told him.
"Well, I'm interested in her friend. So drive, Idiot. We need to catch up with them. Maybe kidnap them," he winked at me.
"You need to visit a psychiatrist. It is for your own good," I slapped his head and ignited the car engine. "Let's catch up with those beauties".
