Chapter 1

Chapter 1

Sam Johnson POV

The dimly lit room felt heavy with suspense  as Timothy my brother and the Alpha of the pack bangs on  the worn-out wooden table in anger at the mention of everyones favourite topic. Rogues.

This topic always comes at least once during the weekly team meetings.

I look around the room that's filled with other pack leaders, such as the gammas, healers, warriors and elders.

My brother Timothy Johnson has been an alpha for a year now, It's a lot of pressure to be an alpha and I could see that it was getting to him.

Although I was older than Tim,  I am glad that my step mother hated me so much that she wouldn't even  let me say the words 'Alpha' and 'me' in the same sentence.

You must be wondering why my 20 year old year brother is leading our pack when it should be me.

The answer is simple. I'm a bastard.

I first met timothy and my father when I was ten years old, my mother had decided  that she could no longer take care of me.

My mother and father were mates, but because my father was the pack alpha he was not allowed to mate with anybody and he was already set to marry Timothy mother.

But they couldn't help themselves and thus, I was made.. Yaay..

My mother tried her best to raise me, I gotta give it her, she held it in for as long as she could, and when she couldn't handle the pain anymore she didn't want to abandon and leave me all alone, so she pinned a hand written letter to my shirt, gave me a kiss and set me off.

Although I was only ten years I knew what was going to be happen, I knew that I was not going to see my mother anymore.

My father raised me equally to my brother to the best he could.

It was hard for him to love me the same way he loved my brother.

The luna was never happy with me. I always understood her side, I'm not clueless.

In her eyes,  I was the bastard that was going to ruin her family legacy, because of me her son could possibly lose his alpha title.

On the bright side, Timothy and I bounded the minute we met, He has loved and supported me unconditionally.

"damn it it! Sam! i have no idea what to do at this point" Timothy growls, brining back to the present.

'soren this'    'soren that'   ' he's evil blah blah blah'

I sometimes tend to space out when we talk about the rogue problem. It always the same thing with them.

The 'dusk moon' is what the rogue pack named themselves. No one refers to them as that because a group of rogues do not make a pack, therefore they don't get a name. Simple.

Rogues have existed as long as werewolves have but they have always been  just a  nuisance to others, thieves and thugs that posed little threat to no one but themselves until four years ago when a new leader stepped up and changed the game.

Soren Thornbourn.

The mastermind behind the transformation of the 'dusk moon' rogues, they went from a ragtag group of pack-less weak rogues into a relentless force of terror overnight.

Under Soren leadership, they evolved into something more sinister.

He moulded them into a well-oiled machine of destruction, instilling in them a sense of loyalty born not out of camaraderie but out of a fear of him.

There's no room for mercy in Soren's world, no place for compassion. Those who crossed him quickly learned the error of their ways, often meeting a grisly fate at the hands of his merciless enforcers.

Soren ruled his domain with an iron fist, brooking no dissent, tolerating no disobedience. To defy him was to invite death itself.

A fact that had become all too clear to those who dared to challenge his authority. Many packs were destroyed because they tried to take him down.

All of the minor packs are now gone. Only the four major packs were remaining.

Fortunately, the Midnight pack has not encountered him yet, but those who have described him as a tall and imposing creature with piercing eyes that bore into any soul that dared his gaze.

He is the reason the Four major pack have made an alliance to each other and joined forces to bring him down if he so much tried to attack one of us.

I listen to my brother as explains the fact that we were chosen to send one of our warriors to Soren's territory to gather information.

Soren was a thorn in our side, a relentless force that seemed immune to defeat.

But this time would be different. This time, the four major will take him down, no matter the cost.

" you need to make sure you're not caught, and if you are,  they can not find out about the plan " Jack continued, his voice low and intense.

" if you get caught, don't worry. Try to survive what ever torture they put you through because if you're not back in one month, we will come and find you"

A sense of unease settled over me like a dark cloud.

The plan was simple. Infiltrate their territory and gather intel to dismantle them from the inside. But the plan was also dangerous and stupid.

I feared for the worst for the warrior that would be going out there.

My brother's gaze flickers to the door and it creaks open. The luna enters the room, her presence commanding attention despite her petite frame.

The luna was once an alpha, after our father passed away, she had taken the position until last year when timothy came of age. Her steely gaze spoke volumes about the power she still wielded.

"Don't mind me, please continue" she smiles, her voice cutting through the tense silence.

After timothy finishes he turns to his mother, his expression guarded as he waits for her to speak.

Instead she turns her cold gaze on me.

A chill runs down my spine.  "I think, this is a mission for a beta," she says, her voice like ice.

"sam, what do you think?"

My heart sinks at her words, a knot forming in the pit of my stomach.

"It's too dangerous," Timothy protests, his voice laced with concern " we are going to send a warrior, they're  trained for this mom"

The luna is right. I can't sacrifice a valuable member of the midnight pack. It has to be me. A beta is replaceable, a warrior isn't.

"I'll do it," I say, my voice steady despite the turmoil raging inside me.

"I'll go to their territory. I'll get the information we need."

Timothy expression softens at my words, a mixture of pride and concern shining in his eyes. He knew as well as I did the risks involved, the dangers that awaited me on the other side.

And he also knew that this was our chance to finally bring peace to our people.

The luna's steely gaze was unwavering as she studies me, I could feel the weight of her expectations bearing down on me, her silence speaking volumes.

She once told me that, it was my job to protect timothy with my life, to put my life on the line if it meant our pack would be safe.

"you don't have to do this " Timothy voice was filled with concern, his brows furrowed with worry.

He had always been protective of me, always looking out for my best interests.

"I do," I replied, my voice still steady.

"I'll do whatever it takes to take down those rogues"

The luna's lips curls into a tight smile, a glimmer of approval shining in her eyes. "That's our beta"

Her tone has soften ever so slightly. "I knew we could count on you sam."

I have done something right, something good so why do I feel so unsettled?

I can't shake the feeling that there was more to her decision than meets the eye. With the luna,  there were always secrets lurking beneath the surface of her stoic facade.

As the door closes behind her, timothy let out a heavy sigh, his shoulders slumping with exhaustion. "You know you have nothing to prove to her" he said, his voice tinged with worry.

He steps forward resting his hand on my shoulder in a silent gesture of support. " I am doing this for you Timmy not her." I tell him

"i know Sammy" he groans annoyed but his voice soft with understanding. "Just promise me you'll come back in one piece."

A pang of guilt stabs me at my heart as I look into his eyes, knowing the worry I was causing him, I hated myself for it.

But I can't back down now, I have to see this mission through to the end, no matter the cost.

"I promise," I say, my voice barely above a whisper.

I wrap him in a hug. "I'll come back. I swear it."
