BACKSTORY
Winnie Hopper is the oldest and only living biological daughter of Jim and Diane Hopper. She had one sister, Sara, who was 4 years younger than her. Winnie was born in Indianapolis and lived there until she was 13, when she moved to her father's hometown of Hawkins.
The Hopper family were never especially close. They loved each other very much, however Winnie always felt closer with her dad than her mom. She always admired him and what he did for a living, solving crimes and hunting bad people. She only wished he could've hunted the bad thing that took Sara.
On March 2, 1978, Sara was diagnosed with Leukemia. And on November 11, 1978, the young girl died. Winnie had to be picked up and carried out of the hospital room by doctors in order to keep her away from the shell of her sister.
The dynamic of their happy family was ruined by Sara's death. Their was nothing but silence and despair and anger in the household. After a year, her parents separated. Winnie bounced back and forth between them, staying with her dad one week and her mom the next. Then, Jim Hopper decided to leave.
Winnie's father was ready to leave the city and go to where he grew up. It was quieter there, is what he said. Despite the assumption that the young girl would stay with her mom in the city, Winnie got on her knees and begged. Begged to go to Hawkins with her father.
Her parents' separation taught her how much more she connected with her father than her mother. And so after some convincing, Winnie was allowed to go to Hawkins.
It didn't take long for the girl to regret that decision though, as her dad quickly fell into a pit of alcohol and cigarettes. They lived in a trailer by a lake, which didn't bother Winnie too much. The water was pretty in the mornings. But a trailer home was only slightly embarrassing to friends she wanted to bring over.
Luckily, that issue was solved by Winnie not befriending anyone well enough to warrant an invitation. After all, who'd want to hang out with the daughter of the town's brand new deadbeat police chief?
Over the course of the first few months, Winnie bonded with Joyce Byers during the girl's constant trips to Melvad's General Store. And when her father became to much, she was invited to stay with the Byers, which she continued to do as often as possible until eventually, she decided to move in.
She was an unofficial Byers who lived in Lonnie's old office. It was a little small for a bedroom, but it made do. She developed a crush on Jonathan and a protective, adoring relationship with Will. And that's where the story begins.
