(6). First Encounter
Lily's POV.
I kicked the door to the apartment room shut. I tossed the suitcase to the side and lugged my backpack to my new room. The drive to Detroit was tiresome and quite an experience. I dropped the bag and flopped on the bed.
~Flashback~
"No! You are not leaving to find that Phsyco!"
I pulled my arm from Mark's grip. "Mark! It's my only chance of finding out if it really is Dylan! And if it is, I have to find a way to get to him before the authorities do."
"No!" He ran his hands through his jet black hair, ruffling it. "L-Lily......I-I can't let you judt..take off like this....." He turned and hugged me. "I-Please come back safely..."
I smiled a little. "I will, Mark. Don't worry about me." I hugged him tight before going to my room and filling my suitcase with necessary items.
~End Flashback~
I huffed and sat up, walking out to the kitchen where I opened the fridge, scanning the insides. I closed it and grabbed an apple from the table and walked to the couch and stared out the window. The sun was dropping and the streets were slowly becoming deserted as people rushed to their homes.
I didn't know what the fuss was about. It was still light enough to see. In New York, everyone is out after midnight still. But after 9:30 in Detroit, the city becomes a ghost town. I noticed multiple figures in dark green jackets threatening civilians.
I almost choked on my apple as I saw a glint of a gun and a gunshot rang in my ears. "Curfew! Everyone get inside!" One of them shouted. A man with spiky blond hair. A young woman with fiery red hair waved an Ak47 in the air and cursed at an elderly man with a young boy.
The old man tugged the boy's hand, leading him to the apartment building. I pulled the curtains shut, my heart pounding like an anxious race horse's waiting for that one gunshot.
Detroit. A city that was supposed to be nice and an amazing town was being harassed. But by who?
I flicked off the lights and returned to the bedroom. I lay down on the soft bed, not stopping to change my clothes. 'I'll do it tomorrow...' I thought.
~Next Morning~
I loud crack woke me up. A crack that seemed to shake my room and definitely my heart rate. I jumped out of bed and fell over the side.
"Ow...." I rubbed my head, and stood up, peaking out the window. Nothing of last night seemed to affect anyone. People strolled the streets as if all was normal and life was good. I knew better. There was something not right here. Something much more than an average serial killer.
I stood and changed into a dark grey tee shirt with a blue and white checkered shirt over it, and light blue jeans. I pulled my baseball cap from my bag and fit it on my head. I walked out of my apartment room into the hallway and almost bumped into a familiar figure.
The young boy from last night. "Sorry." He mumbled, picking up a grocery bag he had dropped. bent down and picked up a runaway package of chicken. "This yours?" I handed it to him. he took it, looking up at me sceptically.
"You're not from here are you?"
I raised an eyebrow at him. "What do you mean?" He took the orange and put it in the bag. "No one around here helps each other. "It's pretty much every man for himself. Anyone else would have kept walking, even kicked the things, but you...?" He shook his head in disbelief.
"You helped. So.....thanks..." He turned and opened the door to his apartment room I guessed he shared with his grandfather.
That kid was pretty mature for his age, I must say... He looked about 7 or 8. But talked like an adult. Guess it comes with living in a city where serial killers are on the loose and mysterious government agent threaten innocents at night.
I continued walking down the hall and exited the building. The streets were swarmed with people going here and there. How was I supposed to find a serial killer in this mess? Uncle Jack worked something out, having me work at a cafe as a cover-up.
I opened the door to the small shop and walked behind the counter. "Lily, Hamato?" I turned to see a slim older woman with a lazy appearance and a look that told me. 'You mess with me, you're fired!'
"Y-Yes. That's me." I held out my hand to shake the woman's. She stared at my hand as if it were a moon rock found on Mars. She glanced up at me before turning around and waving a bony hand for me to follow. "You are late. You need to be here bright and early every morning. Or you are fired!"
There is was.
I took a deep breath and followed the woman behind the counter. She threw an old apron in my face. I pulled it off and was about the protest but she began talking. "Put it on, kid. I'm not gonna let you scare away my customers before you even start working. I'll be paying you but don't expect a fortune."
I nodded and put on the apron, dusting it off with my hands before going to work, washing all the dirty dishes, I turned on the coffee machine and grabbed a dish towel and dried the dishes, putting them away in the cupboards.
The woman, whose name I learned was Natalie, walked in carrying with a more cups. "Hurry up, and we're switching. So get out there, and don't scare them away." I rolled my eyes without he seeing and dried my hands, going out to the front.
~TIME SKIP~
A couple hours and many customers later, I wiped my brow with the back of my arm. "I gotta admit, kid." Natalie slid some cups and saucers from the tables and walked to the back. "You're a natural at this."
I grinned. Maybe staying here wasn't all that bad after all.
The bell rang, sounding the door opening and the meaning of a new customer. I turned with a smile to greet the customer. "Hello, how ca-"
"On the ground, girly." The burly guy pointed an M16 at my head, his smirk showing off his pearly white teeth. His hair was grey, but he was obviously young, early thirties I'd say. I glared at him, not moving an inch.
Natalie was on her knees in an instant, whimpering and begging me to follow suit. I glared at him.
"So, it's gonna be like this huh?" He growled. "I'm gonna say it one more time princess, cuz I feel generous today. On. Your. Knees."
I still stared at him defiantly. Not budging.
His eyes glowed with anger and amusement. Mostly rage. "Fine. one more bloody body on the streets."
He took aim and cocked his rifle.
Oooohhhhhh!!! Cliffhanger!!! What do you think?! Will Lily kneel? Will she get shot? What will happen if she does?! OOOoooooohhhhhh!!! Hope you enjoyed this Chapter!
