(35). Crossing Lines

An audible thud was heard and  Lily whipped her head around as much as she could. "Dylan?" She croaked. The boy's guards just looked down, seemingly as confused and shocked as she was. Even Jayden seemed temporarily shocked. Lily took this opportunity to wrench herself from agents' firm grip and fall to her knees beside the spasming body on the floor.

"Dylan!" Lily placed one hand on his face and the other on his chest, checking for the rise and fall of his breathing. The two guards stepped towards her but stopped as Marcus held up his hand. With a gasp, Dylan sat up, his mouth hung open in heavy pants.

Lily's POV.

Dylan looked to me and I noticed something different in his eyes. They sparkled. Like...they used to. Before I could even ask if he was ok, his hand slipped up behind my neck and brought me closer as he pressed his lips to mine in a passionate, almost desperate kiss. He kissed me like he missed to taste of my lips. He kissed me like an alcoholic who'd found the last bottle of beer in the cupboard.

As we regretfully pulled away, he smiled wearily and stroked my cheek. "I remember." His voice was hoarse. "Everything." His hand dropped to mine and squeezed it. I felt like crying. Tears welled up in his eyes. I could feel my vision getting blurry as my tear ducts mimicked his.

A slow, dramatic clap snapped us back to reality. Marcus hopped off of his desk where he had been sitting. "What a beautiful reunion." He signalled to his soldiers who roughly pulled us apart. "Lily!" Dylan cried. I struggled against the harsh calloused hands that held my arms behind my back. Dylan's face was full of pure worry.

3rd Person POV.

Jayden watched on in silent admiration. He couldn't help but notice the way the Tanner boy looked at Lily. He looked as if he didn't care what happened to himself, he just wanted her to be safe. How Lily gazed at the young man made Jayden realize she would never look at him the same way she looked at Dylan. Jayden's eyes began to sting and he turned around, dragging his sleeve across his face.

He had lied earlier. He HAD noticed they way his uncle looked at the army commander, Buck. He knew he had been replaced, but he had refused to accept the truth. Jayden turned back around. All he had ever done, he had done it to impress his uncle, who had been the only father figure in his life. Now he had to face the facts. His uncle was a narcissistic bastard who didn't care one bit about him.

Lily had been right. They were all just pawns in his uncle's game of genocide. And Jayden has been the knight. "Why do you hate me so much?!" Dylan demanded. "You took my father's necklace, you tortured me to no end, chasing me and my mother, you took my memories! Why?"

Marcus' eyes darkened with such a hatred that it made the hairs on the back of Dylan's neck raise. "Your father took from me, my chance of success. Not only did he take the formula to the serum form me, but he betrayed the trust I had in him."

The room was silent. "Your father took everything from me." Marcus glared at the boy. Jayden was disgusted. This was his uncle's reasoning behind torturing Dylan? How low. Dylan's glower softened to a shocked expression. "Heh, You should have seen his face as I sank the knife into his chest," Marcus said fondly.

Dylan's face contorted in a burning rage. "He stared at me with such determination I wanted to laugh." Marcus grinned evilly. His eyes glistened with pleasure as he fixated his gaze on the kneeling boy in front of him. "Do you know what his last words were?"

Dylan thrashed in his bonds. Tears had already begun to stream down his face. Marcus' smirk grew wider. "He said, 'My son will find a way to stop you. He was destined to bring you to your miserable knees. ' " Marcus threw back his head and let out a maniacal laugh. Lily glanced from the psychopathic man to her left, to the young man in tears of sorrow and anger to her right.

Jayden stared in disbelief at his uncle who he had until now, respected and looked up to. "And now is the moment you feel the pain he should have felt." As he backed up, Marcus motioned for the guards to leave. The agents nodded and shoved the couple down. As the two stood, their eyes widened as Marcus stepped back, his arm reaching back to the desk. His fingers wrapped around the handle of the Glock and dropped his arm beside his body.

Lily's throat constricted. 'Oh, God.' She thought. 'He's going to shoot Dylan!'  Then Marcus raised his arm, aiming at the weapon at her. "No!" The shout sounded the same time the gunshot rang out. Lily could only watch as the boy to her left dove in front of her.

Jayden's stomach burned with a pain he had never felt before. He looked down from his uncle's astonished expression to the growing red splotch on his green shirt. "What's wrong with you, boy?!" Marcus roared. "Are you mad?"

Jayden stumbled forward and sent the shocked and enraged man a satisfied smile. "No. I finally know how to make all the mistakes I've made right." He snatched the pistol from his waist and turned to Lily. Her eyes widened. This didn't make any sense. She stared down the barrel of his gun as he fell to his knees.

"Jayden you don't have to do this." She rasped.

Tears stung his eyes. He breathes deeply, aiming the pistol at his own skull. "I wish that were true." Lily searched his eyes for any hint that he was joking.  She found none.

"Lily. I'm sorry for all the trouble I caused you....and Dylan." He sent them both a sincere apologetic smile. "Trust me. There is no other way. I'm sorry."

As the gunshot rang out, a loud cry echoed it. "No!" Marcus' expression changed from rage to horror. Along the coast, the aircraft targeting America self-destructed. Then the one headed for Germany. The sparkling mist falling into the crashing waves of the ocean. The craft aimed for Asia, self-destructed two minutes from its target.

Lily's tear streaming gaze tore from Jayden's lifeless body to the shocked and enraged Marcus. The murderous look in her glare could bite worse than any legitimate viper could. "Do you feel any shame?!" She screamed, her shoulders trembling.

Marcus glared back. "I should have known you would be the fall of him. I was a fool to insert the kill switch under his miserable skin."

Lily lunged at the man with a roar of anger and sorrow. Unfortunately, she was held back by a pair of strong arms. "You're a monster!" She yelled, struggling against Dylan's embrace. "You only care about yourself!"

Marcus looked emotionlessly at his nephew's body. "He was a liability. Collateral damage." The young couple couldn't believe what they were hearing. "You are a sick bastard!" Dylan shouted, holding Lily close to his chest. Marcus smirked at them, raising his gun once again. In a flash, Dylan had charged the man. Maybe it was the Viper serum that still surged around in his system. Maybe it was the adrenaline. Perhaps it was just instinct to keep Lily safe.

The girl looked on with eyes the size of saucers as the boy she loved with a passion tackled the man she hated with a passion to the ground. Dylan threw punch after punch at his father's murderer's face. Lily flinched as the gun went off again. Out of terror, she backed up, and a cold hand grabbed her arm.

Well, well, well,......what an unfortunate turn of events. (Man, I sound like Marcus.....) Anyways, Love you guys for sticking with me this far! Hope you enjoyed this chapter and I'll see you in the near future! :)
