(25). Betrayal
Lily's POV.
They say that just before you die, your life flashes before your eyes. Well, that's what happened to me. Well....it wasn't death per say. But it was one hell of a nightmare. But I'll get to that later. Right now I'm going to focus on the big titan of a man holding Dylan by his throat.
I tried my best not to run out at him, despite the massive urge to do so. I had to think of a plan and fast. "Hey.....I've seen you somewhere before..." The hulk narrowed his gaze at Dylan, racking his brain to remember where he'd seen him before.
My heart dropped. Now or never. I dashed out of behind the trash bin which I had been ducking behind. "Hey, jerk-face!" I shouted. Whipping out my gun. 'Jerk-face? Really?' I shoved the critical thoughts from my head, aiming the barrel at the Viper agent's face.
Wrong move. He stared at me with realization. The pieces of the puzzle came together in his head. "You..." I noticed a smirk rising on his face as his grip on Dylan tightened. "Lily Hamato." He grinned, showing off some rotting teeth. Dylan let out a strangled yelp as the man's grip on his throat tightened.
"So this must be treasured, Dylan Tanner." His eyes turned to Dylan, crushing his windpipe, which gave me the opportunity to shot him in the leg. His howl of pain was mixed with the grunt of Dylan who was dropped and landed on his ankle.
I rushed to him and caught him before he passed out and collapsed. My arm wrapping around his torso and his arm slung over my shoulder. I began running as best I could while supporting a 100+ pound male. "You ok?" I turned to look at him. He coughed, trying to regain his breath.
"I-I'm fine..." He managed a small grin, right before I heard the gun go off.
My first instinct was to search Dylan to see if he had been shot. He seemed to be as shocked as I was. His eyes found mine just as I concluded he wasn't harmed. That's when the pain shot through my leg. Starting from my calf, it spread like wildfire up my leg and made me stumble.
I let out a shriek of pain as a second bullet penetrated my right shoulder and made me stumble forward, Dylan's weight working against me and making me collapse to one knee. I was determined not to let him fall. "Lily!" Dylan was ripped from my grip and dragged by two Viper Agents. I winced and shook my eyes to a atempt to rid my sight of the swarming red and white dots.
The buff agent from before lifted his foot to my throbbing shoulder and pushed harshly. I fell back like a brick and gasped desperately for air as the pain shot from my shoulder to my chest and up my neck. Tears stung my eyes and I panted pathetically as I lay on my back.
"L-Lily!!" Dylan's voice broke through the loud rushing of blood in my ears. I opened my eyes and pushed myself up with my Good arm to see him. The agent to his left had a AK47 to his head. Dylan searched my gaze pleadingly.
My eyes widened. I tried to speak but my words caught in my throat. Buff guy suddenly slammed his foot into my shoulder, forcing me back to the concrete. My head smacked the ground full force. Stars swarmed like bees in my vision and the sound of a thousand hornets invaded my ears. My head felt as if it were bowling.
His foot pressed further into my wounded shoulder. I screamed in agony. No matter how many times you are shot it still hurts like hell. "So this is the savior." He taunted. "The one who we were told would be smart and strong enough to thwart our plans?" I whimpered as he ground his boot into my wound more. "You are pathetic. You thought you could save the world? Hah!You can't even keep your own loved ones safe!"
That's when I stopped fighting. He was right about that. I was pathetic I had let my family down countless times and now that I finally got the love of my life back he had been ripped from me once more. I was a failure. I didn't even feel the pain anymore. The hurt in my chest was way worse than any bullet could inflict.
Then I remembered. I may have failed, but I still had reasons to fight. My family, my friends and Dylan. My eyes snapped open and I glared into the eyes of the now perplexed agent. I crashed my elbow into his ankle. Grinning when I heard the satisfying snap. The howl of the muscle agent made the other two take their focus off of Dylan and to their leader who now held his foot. I stood and leaning one leg, limped to the other two shooting then both in the shoulder.
Dylan looked up at me and stood, taking my weight as I had done just before. "You OK? " I asked, a little out of breath. "You shouldn't be the one asking that." He scolded, kissing me softly. I smiled. Even in the middle of the worse sircumstance he still has time to be be a smart alek but a loving one at that.
My fingers tangled around the long hair at the back of his neck.
Bang!
I felt Dylan jerk as he slowly let go of me, seprerating our lips. His eyes held mine in a weak pained gaze. Then I felt warm liquid soak through the front of of my shirt. But from the outside. My heart pounder as I slowly looked down. There in Dylan's grey t-shirt on the left side of his abdomen was a fast growing stain of dark red. My head snapped up to see him looking down where I had been a second ago.
His head lifted slowly. He slowly released his gentle grip on me as fell. As did I. But I was grabbed by strong grimy hands who kept me from reaching Dylan.
"Dylan!!!" I screamed. He lay in a growing pool of his own blood. Curled up in a fetus position. He looked so helpless and hopeless. I faught with all the strength had left against the hands that kept me restrained. The pain in my leg and shoulder grew as I thrashed around. A figure walked up with a baseball cap on. Ge was a bit shorter than the other Viper agents. A teenager perhaps. WHe held at his his side a gun. His finger still resting resting in the trigger. I growled and pulled at the bonds that held me.
The stranger had on a bomber jacket with the Viper crest on the shoulder like the other agents but something about him seemed different. The other agents looked at him as if awaiting a command. He must have been a higher rank. Marcus' new right hand man in replacement of Scott?
The stranger bent down and sat back on his haunches beside a Dylan who was writhing in agony and shock on the concrete ground. You idiots don't take orders do you? He asked. It was a retorical question of course. The two agents who had been holding Dylan glanced at each other nervously.
The stranger continued speaking in a calm but intimidating voice. He sounded so familiar.... But my head was too foggy to match the voice with a face. "You have learned nothing. What does Mr. Houston always say?" He turned his head a little to look up at the two. They avoided eye contact as much as they could. They stayed silent. The stranger clicked his teeth in disappointment. "No? that's a shame. I shall remind you." He returned his gaze to the motionless body of Dylan.
"The most successful way to capture a hero is to threaten the very thing that keeps them alive." He reached out and gripped a handful of Dylan's now bloodstained hair and wrenched his head up to inspect his face. I snarled and jerked again the muscle Agent holding me back, trying to ignore the burning sensation in my shoulder.
I caught sight of the stranger smirking underneath his cap. He dropped Dylan's head and stood up. "But I must give you credit. You did manage to get both of the targets. Even if it was coincidental." The two agents breathed out in relief and relaxed their shoulders.
"Unfortunately," The stranger added, pulling out his Glock again. The two agents' eyes widened. "Disobedience and failure is not tolerable." I shut my eyes tightly as the gunshot rang out in the air. "Get this failed experiment to the base and into a cell." The stranger spoke. I opened my eyes to see three more agents step forward and lift up Dylan's limp form and drag it to a truck where they tossed him into the back and slammed the doors shut before driving off.
"Don't worry." The strangers voice reached my ears. "He won't die. He wasn't shot critically and he was injected with the serum. It would take more than one bullet to take him down. Especially if the serum is in full effect." He was refuting to when Dylan turns and kills mindlessly. He stood in front me and bent down to my kneeling level. He smirked. Haven't recognised me yet? Not surprised." He pulled off his cap revealing a young pale face with a small scar under his eyebrow. A head-full of dark hair clipped short. A deadly playful smirk on his face.
".......Buck??!!!"
