Chapter 36: For Once, Ice Was Warm
THIRD-PERSON POV:
Hinata's hands shook as she crumpled her ragged fingers. She cracked underneath her breath. Her tousled hair hid her teary eyes as she hung down, panting with sweat dripping from her jaw. Her knee abruptly dropped but immediately she lifted herself.
Without a goal in mind anymore, what's there to fight, why bother to win, when she's left behind already. "It's not the end! It can't be!" She's daydreaming in denial, but at the same time, those thunders behind her ears torment her frail hope.
Todoroki leaned on his ice, shivering as his ice quirk enveloped his skin, his cold breath visibly fogged. He's beaten up as well. His face creased wearied but a worried expression was more precise about his looks as he gazed Hinata at his front from afar.
Struggling, Todoroki grabs onto his ice to stay on his feet. Touching warm blood on his ice frustrated him more. The sight of his ice tainted with Hinata's blood. "Why..." Todoroki gritted his teeth, "Why is she hurting herself!?... On purpose, when she can just dodge them!?" His bangs shadowed his eyes, upset.
Hinata needlessly exhausted herself and carelessly injured her skin, destroying Todoroki's ice with bare hands and brute force. Her mind was lost, her aggressive charges forced Todoroki to defend himself with thicker ice but it worsened the cuts on Hinata's knuckles.
Not knowing the reason behind her behavior and witnessing her continue it grieved Todoroki.
"Things aren't looking good," Midnight thought, one eye closed, observing the battle. She turned her head to see the time, it was almost up, but not much progress has happened. Both are still standing, both equally worn out. "The tables would probably turn if Todoroki used his fire..." She said in her head.
However, given Hinata's blank state in the fight, Todoroki lost his will to win the unfair match.
The longer the audience watched, their faces grew disappointed, especially Endeavor.
"Aaaaghhh, this is putting me in a tough spot," Midnight contemplated. She chinned up to check Aizawa and Present Mic in the announcement room, wondering why they've been silent lately. Her eyes widened, seeing Yaoyorozo in the room. "Is there... trouble?"
*drip* *drop*
"Uh-" Midnight flinched startled as a raindrop tapped the bridge of her nose.
Droplets showered then suddenly rained cats and dogs. The audience shrieked, being wet. Cementos instantly built them shade.

"What!?" Aizawa and Present Mic reacted. They turned off the microphone for a moment.
Yaoyorozo came and reported to Aizawa about their encounter with the mysterious dangerous man (who they didn't know yet was Chisaki). That time Hinata tried out her byakugan after suddenly retrieving her sight, that's when she saw the corpses of cops that were stationed where Chisaki and his underling exited. Hinata asked Yaoyorozo to report this Aizawa since her battle with Todoroki was about to start.
"Understood," Aizawa said after hearing Yaoyorozo, told Present Mic to stay to make the Sports Fest continue smoothly and typically. They can't let this news out before all civilians and students leave the event safely to avoid panic. Yaoyorozo was ordered to go back to her classmates and speak nothing of this to anyone. Yaoyorozo nodded.
Aizawa and Yaoyorozo left the room. Present Mic went back to business and switched the mic back on. "Okay!! I wonder how this battle would- EEK!!" Present Mic jolted terrified.
~~~
*LIGHTNING!!!!*
The crowd screamed, covered their ears, and cowered, shutting their eyes. The lightning was from afar, but the impact reached even so.
The second the flash of the lightning disappeared, Hinata was nowhere to be seen.
#: "U-Uhm, and our winner is Todoroki Shoto!!!" Present Mic announced enthusiastically as possible. Confused like the rest, only Todoroki stood in the arena, and as if cued, the timer buzzed its limit which ultimately gave him the victory.
Todoroki froze in shock, he had his eyes open the whole time. He then ran away from the arena.
Bakugo's eyelids shot up, "argh!" he grunted. Strained his spine when he jerked because of the sudden lightning.
"AAh!! KACCHAN WHAT WAS THAT!!??!" Midoriya yelped from his separate bed in the infirmary, then instantly twitched in pain for jumping from his sleep abruptly, given he had bandages wrapped around him.
"HOW THE HECK I'D KNOW, NERD!??!!" Bakugo yelled back.
An angry symbol popped from Recovery Girl who was monitoring them. "You brats quiet down!", she shouted. Their noise plus the lightning nearly gave her a heart attack.
Midoriya silenced like a scared squirrel.
Bakugo tight-lipped. His head then wandered in thought, "That lightning... was familiar." Hinata crossed his mind.
#: "First place goes to Todoroki Shotooo!!!!!" echoed the speakers in the hall.
Midoriya's mouth opened wide, awed, smiling, "Wow, good for them! 1st and Hinata's 2nd..." he sincerely complimented, then his voice turned puny, "and 3rd place..." he looked at Bakugo, but dared not to continue his statement.
"THE HELL YOU LOOKING AT!?!!" Bakugo scowled, it made Midoriya squeak frightened.
Minutes later it informed, #: "Unfortunately, the awarding here on the stage will be canceled due to the apparent top three victors' wounded conditions."
Bakugo was shocked to hear that "Just... what... happened...?" He thought, bothered. How bad did Hinata and Todoroki's fight go? Are they severely hurt- no, specifically in Bakugo's mind, "Is she alright?"
#: "Also, on account of the unexpected heavy rainfall, for your health and safety, the Sports Fest shall end early from here..." The announcement ended with greetings of gratitude and farewell.
"I guess that means I'll be having two more patients." Recovery Girl uttered, preparing two infirmary bedsheets expecting Todoroki and Hinata.
Bakugo watched and waited for the door of the infirmary to open.
*knock-knock*
"Get in," Bakugo answered. Impatient as Recovery Girl was slow to open the door.
Midnight appeared, drenched.
"Where are the two children?" Recovery Girl asked, seeing it was only her at the door.
"They're missing."
They were taken aback.
"Hinata ran off from the fight. Todoroki chased her." Midnight entered and borrowed a towel there, drying her spiky hair, "Must be because of the lightning, it's the only reason I can think of."
"What you mean by that!?" Bakugo rudely asked, earning a glare from Midnight.
"I came to tell you not to wait for them," Midnight ignored Bakugo for his impoliteness and talked to Recovery Girl. "You may leave early ma'am, the students and citizens are already departing as well as we speak."
"Well I can't leave yet, I still have these two to take care of." Recovery Girl answered, pointing at Midoriya and Bakugo. It made Midnight look at them, made her notice Bakugo's eager curiosity.
Midnight was silent for a while, considering.
"Maybe she's terrified of thunders... I don't know, just a guess." Midnight said for Bakugo's sake. "Hinata was totally out of her cool during- no, even before their match started, the weather was upset already then..." she wiggled her head, her hair all dried up, "and that crazy lightning... must've made her lose it that she ran away."
Bakugo then eased a little after at least getting a grasp of what happened, but he wasn't also entirely relieved. "So... where are they now?" his words volumed low.
"Eh???" Midnight grinned, "Am I seeing this right?!?!! Never knew you're capable of caring!" she teased.
"SHUT UP YOU-!!!"
"I told you they're missing, didn't I?" Midnight replied, silencing Bakugo. "But don't worry, they're looking for them. To be honest, what's there to worry about? They couldn't have gone that far, if they did, they probably returned to their homes."
"That's exactly what's worrying." Aizawa appeared behind Midnight, at the door. Just came from what Yaoyorozo reported. He came to the infirmary thinking Hinata would be there by now but hearing Midnight, it turned out he was wrong.
"Ow, Eraser Head..." Midnight turned to see him.
"Aizawa-sensei..." Midoriya greeted. Bakugo didn't bother to.
"The cuts on Hinata's hands were severe. Todoroki was freezing during their fight." Aizawa continued his statement, glaring at Midnight. "Both are out in this cold storm, you think they'd survive? What part there is not worrying?"
Bakugo skipped a beat of his breathing. He slowly motioned to get out of his bed.
"And maybe you've forgotten, Midnight," Aizawa went on, "Hinata has no... home..."
Aizawa collapsed.
"You talk too much," Midnight caught him in her arms. Bakugo and Midoriya were also suddenly asleep.
"Was that necessary to use your quirk?" Recovery Girl uttered, having a mask up to her nose.
"I only said things were fine to calm Bakugo cuz he looked like he'd dash out of bed regardless of his broken spine if he heard bad news about Hinata. Aizawa was slow to get that!?" Midnight scoffed, slightly offended. She dragged Aizawa and laid him down on one of the beds there. "And this skinny mummy man was probably going to search for Hinata out in the rain, thinking he'd be strong enough now without getting sick again?" She sighed. "Geez... and he even gave me an angry look! Hmph!" she crossed her arms and faced up to the side.
"Let him be...." Recovery Girl sighed. "You know how Aizawa's been lately stressed about-" she paused, seeing Midnight back at the door to leave.
A pale expression was on Midnight's face, that was later curtained by her hair.
"I'll be going then." Midnight downheartedly bid. "I'll look for them."
***
"Hinata!! Hinata!!" Todoroki shouted under the blaring weather, but no one could hear. He turned and turned around, he was certain he saw her going this way, but she couldn't be found. They couldn't be found. The hazy grey atmosphere surrounding him had him lose track of where he is.
Out in the freezing temperature, his eyelids grew heavier, turning drowsy.
Todoroki shook his head, widening his eyes back open. He looked down at his left hand, focusing on his left side to at least make a slight fire for warmth, but dense raindrops kept falling... his flesh became more frigid.
"Hinata!!!" he called once more, hoarse.
A strong wind blew, tottering Todoroki's footsteps, swaying his path. He staggered leaning on a tree nearby. Mud splashed, his shoes soaked beneath it. "Hinata..." his voice fainted.
A distinct droplet. A tinge of warmth fell on his head. It slid down to his jaw. It pattered against the damped ground, painting it red. More of it gently drizzled his hair, both clear and dark in color. Tears and blood...
"Hinata!?" Todoroki looked up. A bolt of lightning flashed the scenery in sync, meeting her depressed tearful eyes. Darkness returned instantly.
"Hinata, get down there, it's dangerous!!" Todoroki shouted with all his strength. Thunders rumbled. "Hinata!!!!" There was no response.
Todoroki punched the tree trunk, frustrated. His hand shook. He gritted his teeth, exhaling a cool fog. Ice crept out of his right side and encompassed their surroundings. Rain gradually muffled in noise from outside, his ice roofed the two of them, crystallizing an ice shell.
He panted, exhausted. "Can't you hear me? Or are you ignoring me?..." Todoroki heaved, slightly hurt within. His voice echoed in the enclosed dome of ice. He faintly lit his left palm with fire. The dark space illuminated, revealing his reflection from his ice on every side, and also Hinata who sat on the branch of the tree, her knees up to her chin, arms hugging herself.
Todoroki's fire soon engulfed warmth in the air, warming himself from his shivering. The ice started to melt, dripping tiny liquid from above. Inside their somewhat own world. Inside Todoroki's ice with the tree in the center. It's just them, no one else. It was tranquil yet melancholic. Patters of drip-drop rang gently through their ears, some were blood from Hinata's wounded hands.
Hinata was quiet, solemn, her tears have gone. What's done has been done. The fact can't be altered anymore. She's left behind.
"Why did you stop crying?..." Todoroki rested on the ground, "Just cry, you don't have to say anything..." Leaned his back on the tree, his knees up, carrying his stretched elbows.
"Will you come down and sit with me here, Hinata...?" Todoroki softly asked.
She was still wordless. Hinata lowered her face to her knees, covering her expression.
"You're bleeding," Todoroki said, "it's dangerous... what if you pass out and-"
Hinata suddenly crossed his sight, falling.
"Hinata!"
It became dim.
His fire extinguished having caught Hinata in his arms, afraid he might burn her.
Todoroki gulped.
Hardly seeing anything, his other senses heightened.
Feeling the heat of their attached bodies, hearing their hearts beating. Their drenched bodies this close in the dark.
Hinata's heavy breaths touched Todoroki's face, it made his lips shudder, aroused.
"Shoto..." Hinata panted.
Todoroki stiffened, speechless.
Suppressed cries were then heard, "Thank you... Shoto...." Hinata expressed, her voice trembling.
Suddenly two slender arms slipped through the edges of Todoroki's neck, the exhales from her lips tickling his hair strands. The weight he carried lifted from his arms, meeting her intimate embrace against his torso. "...and I'm sorry, Shoto..." Hinata cried.
Todoroki was taken aback yet later relaxed. "It's alright..." he hugged her back, sinking himself on her shoulder.
A small ray of light shone above their heads. His ice had already melted at the top, creating a whole that revealed a clear sky.
The rain stopped, or so in Hinata's eyes... she thought,
"They're gone."
