I always wondered if staring was really a bad thing. Some people have their hearts flutter when the guy they like stares at them. Some people flirt with eye contact, I think it's pretty sweet. Though it's something I will never do, eye contact was weird for me.
They weren't sitting together. They were in the same classroom and we weren't having any teacher at the moment but they weren't sitting together. I know because I was staring at them. Subtly though.
School was back in full swing and everyone was buzzing around with gossip on what might have happened during the break. The hottest topic was Maureen and Joseph's sudden ship wreck. That's right. JoReen has sank to the bottom of the bottomless sea and it made me happy.
Happy was an understatement. I was overjoyed. Ecstatic. On cloud 20 even. The doors were finally opened to me. My chance was here and although this was good news, I was damn curious as to what had caused the split.
Today was the absolute first day back and shockingly there were a large number of students in school, usually the multitude of students would start coming on the second week. Today, not one teacher had walked through the class door and we weren't surprised, not one bit.
Instead, we were busy creating scenarios as to what might have caused the split. By we, I meant me, myself and I. Others were gossiping about it but no one was openly talking about it, it was something you shouldn't be caught doing but everyone was aware you were doing.
Maureen currently sat by herself, her head was on her table while one of her legs rapidly moved up and down, a similar habit we both acquired. It was unlike her to be by herself, even more so with her head down.
Joseph was surrounded by his "boys", Favour was right beside him with the others on a table or something, I didn't really care about them. The particular specimen I was currently analyzing subtly, was laughing at something one of them said. He seemed relaxed, as if things were as normal as ever. Which it wasn't.
The class metal door was slammed open with force and seconds later, a random student called out, "Class, Sit Up!" Our hands pulled up into a bike riding position, horizontal and as straight as a wooden ruler. The students previously lounging on tables were standing tall, both arms locked at their sides.
The naval officer who I now identified as the school's lunatic, Uncle Chimadin, took slow steps in the direction of the class board. The heck did he want with us now. An eerie silence had taken over the classroom, all eyes on the man dressed head to toe in a blue uniform and black combat boots.
Uncle Chimadin walked over to one of the girls in my class and narrowed his eyes before pointing at her. "Why are you looking at me?" For a second everyone just stared in utter confusion and irritation.
"Stand up!" The girl, Jennifer, slowly rose up from her seat. She looked around the class in confusion, her eye brows crinkled together, pressing her lips into a thin line. "Get out of the class."
Jennifer didn't do anything for a second which was surprising because Jennifer always had something to say. "But sir, I didn't do anything." Uncle Chimadin's eyes widened as big as a saucer. He took a step back and beat his chest twice. "You are calling me a liar?!"
Jennifer's eyes widened as she gaped at him, I felt a sudden sadness for her. Today she had been the unfortunate victim of uncle Chimadin's madness. Poor Jenny. The man didn't stop there, he grabbed her arm harshly and pulled her out of her seat.
He even proceeded to shove her towards the doors of the class, to which she confusedly walked out of. He followed behind her and right before he exited the class, he spun around.
Like a dream, our eyes locked and his lips curved in what looked to be a smirk. "You!" My eye brows furrowed on instinct and I shot up from my chair. My palms shook with annoyance as my jaw clenched.
"Out of the class!" My legs became jelly as I swallowed, choosing the safer path, I headed out of the class. Jennifer gave a glance of confusion before turning back to the Rating. He cleared his throat loudly before running his eyes over both of us. If this were a different situation, I'd be convinced he was eye raping us.
"You had the audacity to call me a liar shebi! And you-" He pointed his muggy dark finger at me, "-You can be insulting me in your mind right?" Yes that was what this nonsense was all about. This stupid bit of his.
Uncle Chimadin had a habit of blaming students for doing things they didn't do, just like every other rating in the school. The one difference was, his reason just never made sense. He'd say we were insulting him in our minds or that we were sending out ancestors to kill him with our eyes and then punish us in stupid ways.
I sighed and shook my head, I was so not in the mood for this. Much to my luck, the school bell rang which meant it was time for lunch and just as we predicted, "Wait for me, I'm coming back." Then the crazy old man retreated. With a sigh, I spun around to enter the class only to bump into Daniel.
He gave a bright grin that reached his eyes and tilted his head to the side in this cute weird way. "I'm going to buy something, let's go together." He reached for my hand which out of normalcy, I pulled towards my chest in an instant. "No thanks. I'm tired and there's sun, I'm already dark enough, can't be looking like under of pot."
As expected, Danny broke into a laugh and shook his head. "But aren't you already like that?" My eyes widened in an instant and my hands became my weapons as I attacked my target repeatedly smacking and punching him while he laughed like they were tickles. This boy really irked me a lot.
The sound of someone clearing their throat brought us to a stop, both of us turning to a blank faced Maureen. Almost like magic, we both stepped aside noticing we were blocking the door and allowed her through. "Awkward." Daniel muttered seconds after she was out of range.
Right. Things were awkward. Crazy awkward between us. Especially after that fight that almost caused us suspension. I expected hate, rage, spite but instead it was awkwardness. Very surprising. Not normal in the least bit. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that we were best friends or something but I didn't like thinking too much of it.
By the time I snapped out of my thoughts, I noticed Danny talking to a Junior student and handing him money. So it seemed neither of us were going under the hot sun today. I went back to my seat and Danny followed behind me like a lost puppy. We'd really become good friends, good enough to fool everyone.
Suddenly there was this weird aura that over took me, like this tingling sense and moments after looking around the class, our eyes locked. I think there were some people we weren't fooling. Maybe someone like Ushie Joseph who was currently staring deep into my soul.
