Chapter 173: Anguish, Black Flash: The Traitor

Hi everyone! It's been a while. Once again, thank you for always being patient with me. Unfortunately, life has just been busy with me recently. However, I hope all of you are doing well and in good health!

This chapter definitely took a lot of time. It is the longest chapter I have ever written. Actually, just out of curiosity, I went back to compare it to some of the past chapters, and it is not even close. So, I hope all of you will enjoy this long chapter!

There's a lot to unwrap in this chapter, so have fun, readers!

"Rias."

Blinking at the sound of her name, Rias carefully sets the hot cup of jasmine tea down on the holder. She looks forward to Miraya sitting across from her.

"Yes?"

By chance, the pair ended up finding the other in a small, British-style coffee parlor residing in the center of Kuoh. This specific parlor is one of Rias's favorites in the city. Furthermore, it's become a place she would visit if she ever wished to relieve her mind or craves to read some manga in her lonesome while enjoying the rich teas and variety of delectable sweets the parlor has to offer.

Placing a fork down next to the chocolate cake she ordered, Miraya directs her face at Gremory, entirely centers attention on her.

Without needing to hear what comes next out of Miraya's mouth, Rias can figure out this conversation will be more serious than their previous trades of words that involved typical subjects.

With knowing that, Rias drifts closer to the table, hands folding together and resting on the white cloth surface. She grants her full attention to the human.

"I have an important question I would like to ask you... One that I have desired to ask." "I see. Please, ask away."

Miraya takes a moment to find the suitable words before subsequently opening her mouth.

"Can you explain to me your relationship with Nawin?"

Rias blinks a few times. She is not expecting such a personal question. Yet, when she gazes deep into Culdos's eyes, Rias recognizes this question is crucial to the woman.

Rather than inquiring the reason why Miraya wishes to know of this, Rias dons a tender smile on her lips before opening her mouth.

"Well, to put it bluntly. I love Nawin, and I strongly cherish him within my heart. He has become a person that I am endlessly grateful to be able to call a friend. I look at him very much like family."

Rias stares at her hands for a moment. Her smile shifts towards remembrance. "He has done considerably for the group and for me. Genuinely speaking, I have grown much as a person thanks to him. He made me want to grow more, and the longer I stand by his side, the more confidence I have developed within myself. It is not an overstatement when I declare that I would not be the person I am today if it were not for Nawin's influence. I would take a bullet for him, and I know without a single doubt he'd do the same for me."

Abruptly, a hearty chuckle emerges out from Rias's soft lip. Then, looking up to Miraya, her smile becomes light-hearted.

"Even though he has supplied me with many headaches and stress due to his brash nature, I understood his actions were always for the better of those he cherishes dearly. Nawin is the most selfless person I have ever met, and that nature of his truly changed my group for the greater... It even changed my love, Issei, and encouraged him to mature from the person he once was."

Listening undividedly to every word dripping from Gremory's mouth, Miraya remains silent, holding a firm gaze on Rias's eyes. Then, finally, she perceives it—the joy and love emanating behind those striking turquoise orbs when speaking of Nawin.

The sincere expression currently donning over Gremory's eyes draws a tender smile out of Culdos's face. Smile of relief and satisfaction.

"I am elated to hear that, Rias... Thank you for holding Nawin so close to your heart. Truly, it provides me great relief."

Gremory blinks at those last words and cannot help but ask. "Why?"

Miraya's smile changes in a particular way that Rias finds it impossible to pinpoint what she is honestly thinking. Culdos averts her gaze towards the left, looking through the window to the bustling street full of moving cars and people.

"Because I am confident now that if things ever were to turn bad... You will always do good by Nawin."

Present

Those last words from the vivid dream force Rias's eyelids to twitch to life. Her lip unfolds, breathing in a steady stream of air to the lungs. Her consciousness is gradually returning.

Getting the feeling of her body back, Rias attempts a motion to sit up. Yet, she promptly finds it fruitless. Her body feels heavy, like it is trapped underneath a substantial boulder. She tries once more, and this time, her muscles burn in disagreement with her efforts. Instantly, Rias falls back to the bed and releases a discomfort groan.

"Don't move, Rias."

That soothing, warm voice emits from the side has Rias uncover her lids. She immediately flinches at the stinging sensation and shuts her eyes swiftly, blocking them away from the brightly lit room.

Catching a moment to calm her beating heart, Rias takes more deep breaths before opening her eyes once more, slower this time. She blinks to adjust to the white room.

When her sight is clearer, Rias slowly rolls her head towards the right and sees her elder brother sitting there on a chair by the bed. Rias almost wishes to close her eyes at the sight of that smile currently exhibiting on his face.

The smile carries relief, yet there's visible sadness in them. That sadness plainly reminds Rias of what had happened—evoking her of their failure.

Shifting her head away, Rias stares silently at the ceiling with eyes devoid of emotions. A few moments pass before she finally chooses to open her mouth.

"Is everyone okay?"

"Yes," Sirzech leans forward, elbows resting above the knees, his hands firmly clenching together. "Hunter, with the help of her familiar, carried you and the others safely back to Vesarima. They are in the other room across from here recovering."

Rias curtly nods. It brings her relief to learn all of her friends made it back safe and sound without difficulties. And judging by Sirzech's gentle tone, none of them are in any kind of critical condition that demands her worrying.

"How long have we been back?"

"A full day. You are the last to wake... You've pushed yourself excessively far, Rias."

Gremory pays no mind to the comment or the concern behind them.

"How's Issei?"

Rias closes her eyes and remembers her lover laid defeated on the ground when she successfully surprised Nawin from behind, intending to end it before being hindered by Ophis.

Sirzech releases a heavy sigh while leaning back on the chair. He crosses his arms over his chest, throwing a swift glance back at the entrance door.

"He suffered the most compared to the rest. He was in rough shape, nevertheless nothing too severe. The doctors and nurses were able to patch him up mostly. However, the bones in his right arm were heavily damaged. Approximately all of them are either torn or broken. The doctors can't do much, so they have him wearing a cast in the meantime.."

Sirzech shifts his focus back to his sister. "Only way to fix an injury like that is surgery which takes time and preparation. Therefore it'll be best to leave that injury to your Bishop, Asia."

"Asia..." Rias softly whispers her friend's name, and her eyes slowly unfold widely. Realization reflects in them.

Like a wild tidal wave, dread and angst collide against Gremory. She is reminded of what she must do now, following their failure in stopping Nawin.

There is a responsibility that presently falls upon her shoulders—a responsibility of requiring to notify Asia and Lucy of what had fallen to their brother. Even the thought of that prospect is enough to cause a painful throb to arise in Gremory's jaded heart.

Yet, all of this could have been avoided if they had won the battle and successfully brought Nawin home. But, the reality is set in stone. Rias failed, and now she has to face the outcome of it. She must go to both Asia and Lucy and explain to them, to their faces, that their brother has gone rogue and aligned with Khaos Brigade. Worse, he will surely be branded a traitor to all of Vesarima.

Rias feels her heart hammering intensely, beating at such an abnormal rate that it hurts. Her breathing becomes rapid and shorter. A heap of sweat forms on her forehead and trickles down to her eyes that are wide open, reflecting panic and pain.

"Rias!"

Sirzech stands up in such haste that the chair he was sitting on goes crashing onto the ground. He can see that Rias is succumbing to a panic attack and hyperventilating.

"Take slow breaths! Calm yourself!"

Sirzech wastes no time to drop next to the girl and wraps an arm around her. Then, pulling his sister in, he holds her firmly against his chest while softly repeating those words.

"Deep breaths, Rias. Deep breaths."

Gremory gawks up at her brother. Her eyes are wide and erratic. Yet, even with her frantic state, Sirzech maintains that warm expression upon his face. His smile is all calm and reassuring.

Staring at that expression on her brother's features, Rias gets hit with a sense of familiarity and warmness. She has seen that look directed toward her so many times in the past. And they always assist in lessening her dilemmas.

Slowly, Rias is able to catch deeper breaths, steadily exhaling air down her mouth and to her aching lungs. The stress that's wrenching her heart starts to ease. Her expression softens as the pain in her chest subsides.

Sirzech exhales a sigh of relief when Rias manages to pull through the episode. He does not expose it in his expression, but his heart is pounding as well by the sudden event.

"Goodness," Sirzech releases an earnest chuckle while giving gentle strokes down Rias's soft and beautiful crimson locks in hopes of keeping her calm. "Getting me jumpy like that."

Rias accepts the warmth her brother is providing, shown by her leaning into his hold. She manages to muster a feeble smile at his words. However, the smile is very much short-lived.

"... I'm scared, brother."

Sirzech continues to tenderly stroke Rias's hair. Rarely does Rias address him without under a Japanese honorific, which he has admittedly grown quite fond to over the years.

With her now addressing him in such a regular and heavy practice, Sirzech can determine where Rias's mind is and how lost she is at this moment.

"To... To imagine facing Asia and Lucy. Having to tell them that Nawin has gone rogue. I-I failed them..." Rias sniffs, tears spilling down her glossy eyes. "I failed my friends. I failed Nawin."

The calm smile plaster on Lucifer's face wanes significantly by the sound of his sister's cry. The sorrow behind her voice is enough to make him want to explode and release all of his restraints. It pains him beyond words that he is helpless to do more to help her in this very moment.

Sirzech needs a moment to formulate the correct words to say. A moment passed till his lips part.

"You have done your best... All of you did your best. I am sorry I could not have done more to help, Rias. I... I should have done something sooner with Nawin. Do anything to hinder Ophis from reaching to him. If anyone were to blame for this, it would be me. I had the power to have done better, but I overlooked it. I allowed my naivety to cloud my judgment, and for that, I'm sorry."

Moments of silence pass till Rias regains her bearing. After releasing all the tears and sorrow she has been repressing since awakening, she feels more stable.

Petting Rias tenderly by her head, Sirzech reaches over to grab some tissues on the counter with his left hand. He passes it over to Rias. She takes it and proceeds to use it to wipe the droplets still lingering on her eyelids and cheeks.

When the tears are all clear and ridden from her face, Rias clench the tissue into her hand before gazing up at her brother. She looks at him in the eyes. Their orbs, virtually indistinguishable.

"Brother... I'm at a loss."

Wearing a tender smile, Sirzech leans down to kiss Rias's head softly before unlatching himself from her.

Planting his feet on the spotless, white floor, Lucifer stands up before turning around to face Rias. "Right now, you should focus on seeing your friends. You are the last to awake. They'd want to see you up and well."

Rias steers her eyes down, staring monotonously at the white duvet draping over her body. She finally takes notice that she is currently in a hospital gown.

A hand lightly places upon her shoulder, providing a soft squeeze, has Rias looking up. She sees Sirzech smiling warmly down at her.

"Failure is what you will have to deal with in life, Rias. It is hard, and sometimes it may feel even impossible, but you need to look past it and become stronger so you won't have to face it again."

Sirzech's wise words serve their purpose as Rias manage to muster the faintest of smiles on her lips.

With the help of Sirzech holding her hands, Rias slowly is pulled up to sit on the bed. Then, dropping her legs over the bed, her feet feeling the cold floor, Rias slips into the slippers resting beside the bed before pushing herself up to stand.

Sirzech keeps a firm hold onto one of Rias's arms till her legs quit shaking, and she maintains proper balance.

"Your body is still undergoing fatigue. I am certain you can pinpoint that your mana is remarkably low. It will take some time till you be back in your top shape." Sirzech releases Rias's hands. "I highly advise you to take it easy and rest for a couple of days, Rias. Push yourself, and you will only collapse."

Guiding Rias towards the door, Sirzech takes hold of the bar-style handle and pushes it aside to slide it open. Ready to step out into the hallway, Sirzech pauses abruptly. He blinks in surprise when he sees a person waiting next to the door leading to the room across.

Opening her eyes, Grayfia meets with her husband's gaze. The troubling aspect lurking behind those astute silver eyes has Sirzech's expression stiffen. In that instance, he can determine his wife carries some unfavorable news. He just hopes it is not what that's been dwelling in the back of his mind since the moment Hunter brought the group back.

With her brother standing there and blocking the way, Rias silently sidesteps past him. She looks at where he is staring and perks by the appearance of her sister-in-law.

"Grayfia..." "Lady Rias."

The maid offers a gentle smile full of relief to the young girl. She instantly rids the look directed to her husband. She wishes to supply no ounce of concern to Rias.

"I am very relieved to see you awake. How are you feeling?"

Rias summons up a small, tired smile on her face. "Fatigue... My body feels uncomfortably heavy. Though, with some rest, I hope to get better."

Grayfia's heart throbs at the weak and almost defeated tone coming from Rias's voice. Coming from a girl she has seen so many times is this confident, collective, and intelligent warrior. It paints an apparent picture of just how hard this defeat has affected her.

Still, Grayfia retains that smile of hers and nods at the response.

"I'm relieved to hear. Please do not exert yourself then, Lady Rias." "I won't."

Placing a hand on Rias's shoulder to draw her attention, Sirzech smiles and then gestures to the door across. "You can go on ahead, Rias. While Grayfia's here, I need to speak with her for a moment."

Nodding, Rias does not attempt to press on what her brother wishes to speak with Grayfia about. She holds no care for anything outside of her friends at this moment.

Slowly and carefully strolling past both Sirzech and Grayifa, Rias grasp at the door handle.

Before twisting the handle, Rias halts for a second. She throws a glance back at Sirzech and Grayfia. Both smiles warmly at her, which helps ease this nervousness in her heart.

Turning back to face the door, Rias lets out a soft exhale, then finally slides it aside, opening it. She steps into the room and shuts the door behind.

The smile bearing on Lucifer's face vanishes the instant that door shuts. With a serious and stern expression clouding his face now, Sirzech directs full attention to his wife.

"What happened?"

The oppressive and heavy atmosphere plaguing the room does not go unnoticed to Rias the second she enters.

Gulping down the lump bottling within her throat, Rias strengthens herself and tries to keep composed. She readies to face her friends after the defeat they suffered.

Stepping out of the curtain to enter the main room, Rias comes to a halt in her steps. She winces by the first sight to greet her eyes.

Laying there limply on the bed with the side of his head press firmly on Koneko's thighs, Gasper is soundlessly in slumber. Yet, what causes Gremory's heart to throb is the dry tears still visible on his pale cheeks. To know that the Dhampir has cried himself to sleep, Rias has to tear her eyes away from his solemn face.

Moving her attention to her Rook, Rias sees she fairs no better.

Toujou has her hand still stroking Gasper's locks, but the motion is instinctive. There's no heart in it.

Koneko stares down at the white duvet with her bloodshot eyes. No signs of light reflect behind those yellow-gold orbs. It's as if she is staring into space, thoroughly lost in her thoughts and touch of reality. So much so that she has not even moved an inch or taken notice of Gremory's presence.

Unable to keep her sights on the young members any longer, Rias peers to the left end of the room and sees Yuuto sitting next to Xenovia's bed on a chair.

Never has Rias seen Xenovia look as disheartening as she does now. With one of her hands holding onto Yuuto's, she gazes blankly down at her knees that rest flatly down the bed. Dry tears coat her wet eyelids.

Again, that throbbing pain pulse in Gremory's heart.

Wherever Rias turns, the scenes that await her provide pain and grief. Yet, most of all, it produces regret upon her for failing to save Nawin.

"Rias..."

Glancing up from the white tiles by her name being called, Rias looks toward one of the beds set nearest to the windows.

There sits comfortably on the bed is Issei. And yet, even with their situation being what it currently is, he still strives to bring out that smile of his when looking at her.

The heaviness in Gremory's heart lessens somewhat when she gazes at that warm smile. And it is enough to help her bring out her own. That smile donning Hyoudou's face is one of the many things Rias adores about her lover. He still can wear it out even in the bleakest of times.

Still, Rias is not blind by how weak-willed that smile is on Issei's face. A far cry from what it used to be. But Rias still appreciates it nonetheless.

Seeing Issei, Rias gravitates towards him, desiring to be close to him.

Pulling his head up, Yuuto comes to life by the footsteps drawing near him. He looks over and blinks at the appearance of his King. The two exchange looks. Yuuto offers a weak smile in respect, and Rias respond with one of her own.

Rias bites the bottom of her lip and steers her eyes away from the Knight. That look of despondency in his eyes is too much for her. It is plain how distressed he is over their loss.

"Hey..."

Within the range, Rias reaches out and grabs onto the offered hand from Issei. She emits a soft sigh by the feeling of that familiar warmth in her hand. It provides some much-needed comfort for her. Then, without hesitation, Rias takes a seat next to the bed while keeping a firm hold on Issei.

Opening her eyes, Rias uses this moment to look Issei over and check his condition.

Like Sirzech stated, Issei's right arm is currently in a cast. In addition to that, there still are some visible cuts shown on his arms and neck. Fortunately, none are too severe that demands her to worry.

"How are you feeling?" Issei asks first. Concern lacing clear in his voice and expression.

Though Rias holds no injures compared to him. The expression she carries is worrying to Issei. Never before has he seen Rias in such a defeated state. She looks so weak and fragile. It's as if a single bad touch could break her.

Wishing to reduce her lover's worry, Rias forces out a healthy smile.

"Fatigue. It feels like I'm walking around with boulders strapped on my back. You needn't worry, though. Brother says that with enough rest, I will be back to normal."

Hyoudou nods, but that still does not vanquish all of the worries he holds for her.

Observing Rias, Issei can tell she is taking the loss hard. Furthermore, he does not miss signs of redness in her eyes, revealing she has recently wept.

Shifting away from Issei for a moment, Rias looks over to the bed laid across from Issei's. It stations there in the dimness due to the curtains being pulled over that part of the window.

Rias's eyes widen slightly at the unmistakable river of raven locks flowing down the white cover of the pillow.

"Akeno..."

Rias grimaces at the sight of her friend's prone state.

Laying there still on the bed, Akeno has the duvet draped over her entire body, hiding even her face from the world. Evidently, she prefers not to be bothered.

Issei follows Rias's gaze to Himejima. His expression grows sorrowful by the disheartening sight.

"She's been like that since I came to..."

Out of everyone, Akeno may take Nawin's defection the worse and hardest.

"... I tried my best, Rias."

Gremory shifts attention away from Akeno and returns it to Issei. He stares out the windows. The sunlight shines through and reflects his brown orbs, and behind them bubbles frustration and regret. His lips are quivering under raw emotions.

"I-I did everything I could... I forced myself to the limit. A-and still, it was not enough."

Issei bites his lips as his hands clenched tightly into the duvet.

"I know you did the best you could to stop him, Issei," Rias slides her hand down to rest on top of Issei's. She gives a soft squeeze in comfort. "You gave it with everything you got, like all of us. Bu-" "But it wasn't enough," Issei softly interrupts with a bleak smile plastering on his face.

That smile covering her lover's face breaks Rias's heart. This is the first time she has seen Issei look so downtrodden. It's such a sinful sight, originating from the brightest and optimistic person she knows.

Swallowing down the lump in her throat, Rias dares to cast her eyes back to her friends. The despair and defeat look on their faces causes her heart to tighten up. The sight is too much to bear.

As their King, Rias realizes she should do or say something to encourage them, to help them through this challenging time. Yet, now, as much as she desires to, Rias simply cannot find it within herself to even conjure up this false hope.

There is no bright side to all of this. And Rias is conscious of this. They lost, and now Nawin is incomparably out of their reach. He left them defeated and exposed them to just how weak they truly were.

If Rias is powerless to help herself out of this time of despair, how can she possibly help her friends through this?

The front door of the room suddenly comes open, and out strolling through the curtains is Sirzech. A severe expression is donning over his face.

Rias looks up to her brother and sees that expression he wears. Instantly, the back of her hair rises up, and her heart throbs. An ominous feeling crawls up her spine.

Sirzech scarcely eyes the other members as he sets sight toward his sister.

"Rias, I need you for the moment. It's urgent."

It is clear to Rias that Sirzech carries bad news. Some part of her simply wishes to send him away to spare her of it. Right now, all she craves is to be left here with her friends. However, recognizing that look behind her brother's eyes, Rias comprehends that she can't refuse.

"Okay."

"You want me to go with you?" Issei offers when seeing the tense look in Rias's eyes. She looks back at him and shakes her head, giving his hand one final squeeze before letting it go. "Don't worry. I'll be fine. You just rest up."

Rias needs to stay somewhat substantial for the others. She can't act childish and be depressing as it'll do no good for the rest. So, standing up from the chair, she strides over to the Sirzech, following him through the curtains.

Opening the door and allowing Rias to go through first, Sirzech glances back and meet eyes with Issei before the curtain flutters back to its position, sealing the view of the group altogether.

Sirzech grimaces at the defeated and vulnerable look in Hyoudou's eyes.

Taking a deep breath into her lungs, trying to calm her heart, Rias opens her eyes and turns around to face her brother. Expression sharp, just like his.

"What's going on?"

Sirzech takes a moment before reopening his eyes. Anger is evident and bubbling behind those turquoise orbs. Lifting his right hand up, Sirzech flicks his fingers to create a magical case that envelopes both of them.

Rias throws a glance at the pale crimson mana casing them. It is clear now her brother wishes no ears to listen concerning what they shall be discussing.

Feeling confident that they are secure from all prying ears, Sirzech faces Rias. Crossing his arms over his chest, he decides best just to be blunt about this matter.

"Words over Nawin's defection has reached the councils' ears."

"W-What?!" Rias stutters out, stunned. Her eyes are wide in disbelief.

"I know," Sirzech grimaces, his arms shaking with building rage, "I still do not know how but it has reached the ears of the Old Councils. Grayfia just informed me that they wished to hold a gathering. They plan to share this with all the members in the council." "B-But," Rias steps forward, her eyes sharpening and burning with fury. "This doesn't make sense, brother! It's only been twenty-four hours! Yet they've already got wind of this?! It was supposed to be kept tight-lipped! You said so yourself!"

Sirzech does not blame Rias for her outburst. She has every right to be furious. He assured her he intended to keep Nawin's defection a secret. He gave her his words.

"I know... I'm sorry about this, Rias. Truly." Sirzech taps his arms with the index fingers, his mind scrambling for answers. "It frustrates me as I have no clue as to how they got word of this. However, Ajuka is confident that it did not come from his side, and I believe him. Ajuka's people who received that surveillance video of Nawin do not hold the whole context, so they can't possibly leak anything with the concept of defection. Moreover, Ajuka works with people who are most loyal to him; they'd do nothing under the table unless said so."

Rias takes a moment to gulp down deep breathes, calming herself and pressing down this seething rage bubbling in her stomach.

So badly does Rias desire to simply lash out and explode. After everything that has occurred. The furthest thing Rias aspire is getting involved in these political games that the Old Council enjoys playing to get things their way.

"Then know this, brother," Rias reopens her eyes, and they flash in crimson. A storm of emotions rages in them. "I will stand by Nawin's side to the very end. Ophis compelled him to go rogue, and there is nothing they can say to make me believe otherwise. I lost a dear friend to that Deity."

In his mind, Sirzech is happy at his sister's words. He can hear it clearly, the care and love she carries for Nawin.

'You've got an amazing friend in Rias, Nawin...'

"Very well," Sirzech nods. "I will try to do right by his side, too. However, Rias, you must know that many won't be satisfied with that reason alone. The fact still stands that Nawin has left to Khaos Brigade. He has turned his back on Vesarima. No amount of saying can sway that fact. It pains me to say this, but I believe no matter what the verdict is. When I exit that room, Nawin will be marked as a traitor."

"I am aware, but that won't dishearten me. Let me go with you," "No." Sirzech immediately shoots down the request. "I brought you out here merely to keep you in the loop because you are Nawin's King. That council room can become a battleground, Rias. I-" "Brother," Rias sharply cuts in with a fiery look in her eyes, her lip twisting into a frown. "I am going in there with you. As you said, I'm Nawin's King and, more importantly, his friend. I must be in there to defend him if need be. So please, let me go with you."

Sirzech knows he should not. He does not wish for Rias to know just how vile things can get in that room. War of voices getting thrown around, harsh words fired that can scar many individuals who do not hold enough of a thick skin. It is no place for the faint of hearts.

As her brother, Sirzech prefers not to have Rias become tangled in such a precarious and toxic environment that the council room can morph to. Yet, when observing that fiery and determined look in Rias's eyes, Sirzech fails to find it in his heart to stop her.

"All right," Sirzech sighs in defeat, nodding. "I'll allow you to come with, but," he raises a hand, "Promise me you will keep your composure, Rias. Do not let anyone in there get the better of you. Primarily those three. Am I clear?" "I refuse to let any of them bait me," Rias swiftly reply with confidence.

Having his sister's words gives some relief to Sirzech.

"Let's go then." Flicking his fingers, Sirzech summons the teleportation spell. The sibling vanishes into a cloud of crimson sparks.

Makasha's Household

"Urgh!"

Snapping out of her slumber, Lucy unfolds her eyes, staring hysterically at the ceiling above. A sensation washes over her body as if someone had just thrown a bucket of cold water onto her.

Lucy tries to move, but her face winces at the pounding sensation in her chest. Her muscles all but tighten by the rush of emotions coursing through her body.

Realizing that she is too excited, Lucy forces herself a moment to steady her breathing. Gulping down a steady stream of air to her lungs, Lucy feels her heart settling. That pulsing sensation lessens till it is withdrawn entirely.

After bringing an arm up to wipe the cold bead of sweat from her forehead, Lucy slowly places both hands onto the soft surface of the bed. Then, with a deep and weak groan, she pushes herself to sit up.

Something that becomes immediately apparent to Makasha is the absence of familiar warmness on her left.

Eyes widening with anxiety, Lucy sharply turns her head toward the side of the bed. A short gasp leaves her lips at the absence of her sister. She should be asleep right there on that spot.

A pulse of worry courses through Makashas's heart, and her body becomes tense, ready to move. However, before Lucy can jump off the bed and begins searching, the sound of something hitting the carpet draws her attention.

Lucy steers her eyes toward the source of the noise that sounds almost like a droplet hitting a surface.

A sharp gasp escapes from Makasha's lips instantly. Her expression widens in disbelief.

Bathing in the orange sunlight glaring from the window, Asia stands there, gazing out at the evening view, wide awake.

The sound of a gasp manages to draw Asia's attention away from the beautiful view of the sunset. She turns towards the bed to look at her shell-shock sister.

"A-Asia," Lucy whispers in a stutter. Then, instinctively, she brings her hands up, almost covering her mouth. Her wide eyes do not trust what it is regarding.

Lucy gawks at those beautiful emerald orbs staring back at her. A burst of joy surges in her heart, though that is quickly dashed. Lucy leans forward and expresses concern when noticing the tears streaming down from her sister's glossy eyes.

The tears are impossible to miss, glistering there on Asia's cheeks by the sunlight illuminating upon her face.

"Nee-chan," Asia's quivering lips slowly morph into a radiant smile. It shines even brighter than the sun itself. "I-I can see you."

That familiar sting burns in her eyes as Lucy lets out the tears trickle down freely. Unable to suppress the happiness overwhelming her, Lucy breaks out one of the biggest smiles she can give in a while. Then, bolding out of bed, she hurries over to Asia.

With laughter leaving their lips, the sisters embrace each other while weep with joy. Their smile widens as they rub their cheeks together affectionately. For this particular moment, any worries of the world are gone and forgotten for the pair.

A moment of silence pass by before the sisters collect themselves and step down from the cloud of joy, returning to reality as their emotions settle.

Withdrawing from Asia, Lucy still keeps a gentle hold on the shoulders and takes a moment to accurately examine Asia's face, especially those striking emerald orbs.

A bright grin full of delight and tease cracks out of Lucy's face.

"So, do I still look any different from the last time you laid your eyes on me, Asia?"

Asia can't help but giggle at the childish question while bringing a hand up to wipe away the remnant of tears on her face.

When her vision clears up, Asia takes the chance to measure her sister, observing her entire form.

"... You have lost some weight, Nee-chan," Asia cheerfully points out, "And your eyes... They hold more maturity now compared to before. You've changed more there than anything else."

A warm smile forms on Lucy's lips when she hears Asia's comment. She is a person who does not care for anyone else's opinion on her besides those she holds close. Therefore, unlike many others, Asia's opinion has weight in them for Lucy, and it helps validate her growth to herself.

"Thank you, Asia," Lucy cups one of her sister's cheeks. "Hearing that from you means a lot."

Asia beams before opening her mouth to speak till a sudden vision arises into her mind like a tidal wave.

'Do not worry about me, Asia.' An image of Nawin surfaces. The smile plastering on his face is broken and full of sorrow. 'We will be a family once again when I bring her back with me.'

"Asia!"

Lucy becomes alert when Asia suddenly stumbles backward, dangerously close to tripping over herself, her feet wobbly and unstable.

Seeing her about to collapse, Lucy swiftly steps onward to grab hold of the blonde's arms, keeping her balance and standing. Asia's entire legs are shaking at this point.

The expression of shock plaguing Asia's face has Lucy's heart pounding in anxiety. A hand of ominous suddenly creeps from behind her, grasping her by the neck.

"W-what's wrong? Are you hurt?"

Lucy's voice manages to pull Asia back from her thoughts. That image of Nawin vanishes and replaces it with Lucy.

"Nee-chan..." With a heavy heart, her eyes stinging amidst new tears threatening to fall, Asia brings her hands up to grab onto Lucy's forearms.

"Where is Onii-chan?"

Asia's question hits Lucy like massive boulders dropping onto her body. Her entire world comes to an abrupt halt. Her heart stops beating, and her blood goes cold.

Lucy's eyes widen slowly in remembrance. Next, like a vicious stream, memories of last night come back to her, reminding her of what had happened with Nawin.

The delight of seeing Asia awake and ridden of her blindness momentarily clouded Lucy's thoughts and memory of her brother.

"Nee-chan?!"

Asia gasps when Lucy's legs suddenly give in, and she collapses onto the floor.

Fresh tears begin bawling from Makasha's glossy eyes as she stares mindlessly at her hands, the hands that were desperately gripping onto her brother the past night, desperately attempting to stop him from leaving.

"I-I," Lucy carries a broken smile, clenching her hands into a fist, holding so tightly that her arms visibly shake. "I t-tried to stop him and..."

Asia does not waste a second to be by her sister's side.

"W-what's wrong, Nee-chan?!"

Asia feels her heart is ready to break into two from the sight of the sadness and hopelessness clouding over Lucy's face. She looks so vulnerable at this moment.

'Our path may diverge but know that no matter how gray it looks... I will love you always, Lucy. You and Asia made this pathetic brother's world brighter than he could ever hope for.'

The smile Nawin wore when he said those words, the amount of force he had to use to keep it strong to mask the sadness behind them. That image is so vivid to Lucy, and it breaks her heart to see it.

"H-He's gone," Lucy stutters out of her quivering lip, her eyes shifting to Asia. "B-Big bro left..."

Not fully comprehending Lucy's words, Asia only grows more concerned. Not knowing what else to do, she grasps her sister by the hands and squeezes it softly in a way to comfort her.

"Please calm down, Nee-chan. What do you mean by Onii-chan left?"

"Asia."

A cool and calm voice coming from behind has Asia instantly come to a pause. Her widening eyes in recognition.

Twisting her head around, Asia gawks at Jonathan standing there by the doorway. He looks at them with apprehension. However, a smile does sprout from his lip when their eyes meet.

"Papa..."

Asia's lips tremble at the sight of seeing her father again, noticing he has not changed a bit. He still looks ever the calm, considerate, and kind-hearted man she met from the beginning.

There's nothing more Asia wants right now than to dash to her father and embrace him. But she pushes that urge away as there is something she must know.

"Papa, where is Onii-chan?"

Jonathan's smile grows tense by the question. Then, his eyes shift over to Lucy, who is still in tears.

Leaning off from the doorway, Jonathan walks into the room and stops in front of the girls. Dropping to one knee, Jonathan scoops Lucy up and holds her close to him. Without saying a word, Lucy wraps her arms around her father, crying onto his chest.

"A lot had happened when you were recovering, Asia," Jonathan softly asserts, then offers a hand to his youngest. "We will talk through this. Let's head downstairs. Your mom's waiting."

Her father's word only serves to fuel this unrest feeling plaguing in the pit of her stomach. Yet, Asia soundlessly nods and takes her father's offered hand. He assists in pulling her back to her feet.

Seeing Asia's eyes once again gazing at him, Jonathan cannot suppress the cheery smile breaking out from his face. His heart pulses with happiness at the sight of those beautiful emerald orbs he so dearly missed.

Giving a soft squeeze to his daughter's hand, Jonathan guides her out of the room.

"Welcome back, sweetheart."

Asia smiles cordially at those warm words. She looks up at Jonathan, a brighter smile donning her lips.

"Thank you, Papa."

Walking down the stairs, Asia peers over to study Lucy. She is still downtrodden. Her tears have dried up, but the weeps leave her lip still. It is the first time Asia has ever seen her sister breaking down like this. With how bright and fierce Lucy is, the girl now before Asia almost seems alien to her. Weak, sad, and confused.

Unable to bear looking at her sister in such a state, Lucy rears her face ahead. The ominous sensation pressing around her body only worsens the closer they draw towards the living room.

Entering within the spacious and brightly lit room, Asia promptly scours the room till her eyes rest on Yao.

Standing there with arms folding in front of her chest, her back facing the doorway, Yao provides no notice of the bodies entering the room. Alternatively, her stoic eyes remain on a picture frame resting on a shelf above the television.

The photo behind the glass shows a young Nawin. No older than six. He is sitting on a swing they once owned in front of their yard, in their previous house.

With a big, adorable grin beaming on his face, Nawin laughs with enjoyment while being pushed Yao, who is wearing just a big a grin as her son. Anybody who studies the photo would perceive they are mother and son judging just by the similarity in their smile.

"Mama..."

Some light returns to the mother's dull brown orbs when hearing Asia's melodious voice calling to her. The dreary cloud of apprehension and gloom plaguing her mind is pushed away momentarily.

Tearing her attention away from the photo, turning her body towards the doorway, Yao can't stop the gasp of joy escaping her lip when meeting her eyes with Asia. Those beautiful, bright emerald orbs stare directly back at her.

'Sayomi...'

Seeing her mother again reminds Asia how she's always been so kind, supportive, and patient with her through her time of being blind. Like everyone else in her family, Yao was always there for her when Nawin, Lucy, or Akeno could not. She even taught her how to grow more accustomed to her blindness.

Newfound tears trickle from Asia's eyes. Unable to stop herself, her body moves on its own accord, following the desire within. Asia sprints towards her mother, crying out for her.

"Mama!"

With tears welling in her own eyes, Yao falls to one knee, spreading her arms out to accept the embrace of her daughter.

"Oh, Asia," Yao mutters, sliding one hand to hold the back of her daughter's head. She can immediately tell how much more healthy Asia is now. In the past, whenever Yao tried to hug her, she constantly was afraid of putting in too much strength. Asia's body was so weak when she was blind, fragile enough that it felt as if you could break her bones like glass.

Instead of it feeling light and delicate, Asia's body is now sturdier and warmer even. Perceiving this is enough to make Yao weeb with joy.

Slowly pulling back, Yao cups both of Asia's cheeks and looks at her face.

"How I yearn to see those eyes of yours, Asia." "I miss seeing you too, Mama." Asia grasps over her mother's soft hands, holding them firmly, feeling their comforting warmness.

However, the joyful moment is quickly disrupted when Yao allows her eyes to follow past Asia and sees Lucy there nearby the doorway, clinging desperately onto Jonathan.

The tenseness from before returns to Yao's eyes when spotting dry tears clinging to her daughter's cheeks. She looks up at Jonathan, and with one passing look at one another, she understands what happened.

"Mama."

Yao peers down, and her heart immediately wrenches at the look of confusion and concern bearing over Asia's glossy eyes.

"Where is Onii-chan?"

Only giving a stiff smile in response, Yao gently lifts Asia off the ground and carries her to one of the couches lying inside the living room.

Asia speaks no words, allowing her mother to set her down on the couch. She looks over to see Lucy also drop next to her. "Nee-chan." Asia does not waste time scooting closer to her sister, placing a hand over hers to give some form of support.

Lucy appreciates the gesture, managing to muster a small smile over to her sister. Her cry has subsided. Her eyes all reddish and lose much of their usual glow.

This anxious feeling in Asia only continues to grow more and more at each passing moment. Now it is getting close to a point she is striving hard not to explode and outright demand an answer regarding her brother.

Hearing the sound of leather creaking, Asia faces ahead and sees her father taking a seat on the couch opposite them.

The air in the room quickly shifts to a tenser condition. Somehow, even when the room is brightly lit, the mood now darkens everything and makes it seem almost murky.

Asia bites the inside of her lip. She did not foresee such an adverse scenario like this when she ultimately awoke. Preferably, all Asia wanted was to wake up and be welcomed happily by her family. To finally gaze upon their faces again after so long in being incapable to.

But, most of all, Asia desires to reunite with her brother. To be greeted with that warm and loving smile of his that she endlessly adores.

"What's going on?" Asia softly asks, almost begging now for some sort of answer.

"He's gone."

Before either of the parents have the chance to respond, Lucy bluntly inserts the answer to the question. Her voice, dull and lifeless.

Asia's expression twists to confusion, not understanding the whole purpose behind her sister's words. "Gone? What do you mean?"

Lucy wipes the remnant of tears still clinging to her eyelashes. Her mind clears up.

"Last night... He returned home, and I got a chance to talk with him. H-he," Lucy's lips trembles for a moment, recalling the memory, "He said there's something he needs to do that requires him to be away for a while."

"I-I don't understand," Asia blinks in puzzlement. "If it's for a mission, then it wou-" "This isn't like that, Asia," Lucy cuts in, "Brother looked so sad... He wasn't himself."

Hearing Lucy not calling Nawin by 'Big Bro.' A nickname she virtually always calls him by as a sign of affection. It helps Asia realize this is pressing and unlike the norm.

Unable to take this confusion any longer, Asia snaps her eyes to her parents. The emerald orbs lose their kindness and warmth. Replacing them is passion and frustration.

"Mama, Papa! Where's is Onii-chan?!"

Jonathan grimaces at the angry sight of his daughter. He feels the couch moves and glances over to see Yao finally securing a seat beside him. Her expression is entirely serious. Her eyes are sharp as a blade and are restrained, covering any emotions that are brewing beneath.

When seeing that look in his wife's eyes, Jonathan remembers their conversation—remembering the position that they will take to this.

'So when the time comes, we will forgo in telling Lucy and Asia what Nawin's intention truly means?' 'Either you speaking this out to reconfirm or questioning my judgment. Which is it?' 'Haven't decided yet...'

'Jonathan, I know you detest to have to play this role anew. Needing to hide things from our children. But, we must here.' 'Years we've done that to Nawin, and here I stand with everything that has transpired. And I can't confidently say that was the best approach.' 'And I will take the blame for it. Nevertheless, this isn't just my decision but our son's. If Lucy and Asia were to know the truth, it would affect them and hinder their determination.'

'You don't think they would want to get Nawin back simply because he is their brother? Who chose to head to a terrorist group in Khaos Brigade?' 'And you believe the thought of Ophis having taken their brother won't further fuel that fire? Further, let's not overlook the weight we will place on their shoulders if we were to tell them. They would have to keep this secret from their friends. And I hate to say this, but it is the truth. Asia is entirely useless when it concerns lying. She is too kind. She will tell someone one day. Either out of mistake or weaken by the burden.'

Jonathan remembers the fiery expression vividly on his wife's face as she glares at him.

'Are you willing to gamble on our son's sacrifice like this, Jonathan?'

As harsh as Yao's words were, Jonathan understands that it comes from the best place. No matter how much she tries to hide it from him and even herself, Yao is deeply wounded by Nawin's decision to leave, but she still allows it.

Yao will forever carry the regret in her heart over her choice to cover a big part of Nawin's past from him. The shame of that becomes one of the significant reasons she can't find it within herself to stop Nawin from treading down this gray path he chose.

Furthermore, that very same regret serves to provide Yao the drive to do right by Nawin's side. Nawin wants his true intention of joining Ophis to be shrouded in deep secret. To make his plan work to its fullest, everyone needs to believe that he was influenced to go to Ophis. With that notion planted in everyone's mind, it will only provide a more definite purpose, more determination for them to get stronger so they can chase after him.

Hence, in the end, even though it is difficult for Jonathan to keep his children in the dark. He refuses to go against Nawin's wishes, damaging his sacrifice. His son has chosen to walk down this dangerous path to protect the ones he loves. And Jonathan will do whatever he can on the sideline to support his son.

"We had seen Nawin shortly after he said his goodbyes to you two," Yao finally speaks. Her voice is calm and neutral.

Lucy jerks forward and stands up from the couch. Her eyes lock on her mother. "You saw him?! Then you must know where he's gone!"

Yao chooses the following words carefully. She cannot allow there to be an opening to brew skepticism. Mentally preparing herself, Yao drags her eyes away from the glass table resting at the center to look at her daughters.

"Nawin was not himself, and his parting words were short." Yao releases a shaky exhales through her lip. "He said he would be leaving for Khaos Brigade to join with Ophis."

The silence following Yao's words is oppressive, almost to the point of suffocating. The entire world seems to have come to a pause for the family in the room.

Silence is broken by a gasp leaving Asia's lips. Yao's words have just registered to her when she realizes that this is real.

Bringing her hands up to her mouth, covering it, Asia wears a look of horror on her face. Then, she slowly shakes her head in disbelief.

Feeling her body grow heavy, like boulders just smash down on her shoulders, Lucy drops down onto the couch. Her eyes are wide and unblinking, many emotions swimming within them.

Lucy tries to speak, to retort, but she fails to get words out of her tight throat. Then, she feels her vision becomes misty once again, tears threatening to spill.

"W-why..." Lucy coughs out, stuttering through her quivering lips. The sight has Jonathan grimace and always look away. Yao tries hard to remain impassive, but she cannot hide the grief escaping from her eyes.

Lucy musters a glare straight for her parents. "Why didn't you two stop him?!" "He shortly vanishes afterward, Lucy," Jonathan replies, managing to remain composed so far. "You let him escape?!" Lucy's heating glare shifts promptly towards her father.

Everyone can already feel the temperature in the room going on the rise.

"Lucy," Yao tries to speak, only to go quiet when Lucy's aura begins manifesting to life, those blue flames burning before her very eyes.

"You let him escape," Lucy mutters, her voice heavy and boiling with anger. "You should have known something was wrong and stopped him! You let hi-" "LUCY!" Yao's booming voice cuts in and silences the blonde.

Lucy shuts her mouth in shock, but her rage is still smoldering. Her arms are shaking now, and her glare only intensifies.

"Why..."

Everyone turn and their heart clench at the river of tears flowing down of Asia's eyes. She is completely heartbroken. Her eyes are unblinking and full of emotions. Her lip is trembling, desiring to release the cries building in her throat.

Lucy's glare crumbles at the sight of her sister's sorrowful expression. Her heart wrenched. A sudden urge arises within her that wishes her to rush over and hug Asia, consoling her. Yet, Lucy can't find it within herself to take that action. Instead, the anger and sorrow within her overwhelm that urge.

Tearing her gaze away from Asia, Lucy faces her parents. Her eyes are dead cold now. "I'll go look for him then. I cannot stand still and do nothing here." "Lu-" Jonathan is abruptly cut when Lucy shuffles away, marching straight for the hallway.

"Lucy!" Yao calls out but is ignored. The sound of the front door swings opens before it slams shut, rattling the hallway.

Pushing the feeling of regret for abandoning Asia aside, Lucy chews at the bottom of her lip before opening her eyes, ready to release her wings and begin the search for her brother. She will search high and low to find him. No matter what.

Lucy's track comes to an immediate stop. Her eyes widen at the person standing there on the front porch. She opens her mouth, her lip still quivering.

"T-teacher?"

At a rare sight, Serafall does not wear her usual bright, loud, magical girl attire. At present, she dons a sharp, dark emerald blazer with a black pencil skirt. Her typical jovial, childish expression is nowhere to be seen. Replacing it is cool and almost cold exterior.

For a rare moment, Serafall indeed looks like a woman who holds the title of Leviathan.

With how serious Serafall is at this moment, it does not spell good to Lucy. On the contrary, she has an inkling feeling that something big must've happened.

"Lucy," Serafall calmly starts. There is some relief underlining her tone when seeing her student. "So, you were here all along." "All along?" Lucy chokes out. "What's going on?"

Serafall gazes towards the right for a moment. Hesitant to say the words. It is a field she loathes to do; that is breaking bad news. But, as her teacher, Serafall feels she should be the one to do so. And, it is best she does it straight. She never is one to beat around the bush, much like Lucy.

"It concerns your brother... He's g-" "Brother?!" Serafall is swiftly taken by surprise when Lucy appears before her and seizes her arms.

With desperation donning over her expression, Lucy opens her mouth. "You know where he is, teacher?!" "You are aware he's been absent?" "Yes! He was acting weird last night. Mother said that he left to Khaos Brigade," Lucy's lip trembles when those words leave her mouth. "I-It's not true, right? He's just missing! H-He must still be dealing with the breakup."

For a rare moment in Serafall's life, she wishes that the ground beneath her feet would simply split open and swallow her whole. The expression on Lucy's face and how those blue eyes are adamantly fighting to disregard the concept of her brother defecting. It is a sight that pierces deep within Serafall's heart.

When Leviathan had gotten word of Nawin's turning rogue from Sirzech, the first thing she wanted to do was be the one to notify Lucy. She hopes she can somehow lessen the blow of this terrible news. How naive she sounded. Now that she is here and observing Lucy's state. Nothing Serafall says shall lighten the impact of the news.

It is no secret to anyone and especially to Serafall of just how much Lucy cherishes her brother. All she can do now is hope that her following words will not change her beloved student for the worse.

"Lucy... I came here because I've received word of your brother," "So," Lucy's eyes light up with hope. She pushes her face forward, pressing for the answer, "You know where he is?!"

Serafall feels her lip quivering. Yet, she pushes through even as she gazes at those hopeful blue orbs.

"L-Lucy. Nawin has defected to Khaos Brigade and joined up with Ophis. Rias and her group pursued him in hopes of stopping him but were unsuccessful and left defeated by his hands. Nawin's gone rogue."

Lucy feels the entire world around her collapse at that moment.

"... N-no," Lucy whispers with a broken smile spreading over her face. She shakes her head. "T-that's not true. You must be misinformed! Brother w-would nev-" Suddenly, like a wave of cold sea washes over her, that nightmare resurface. The terrifying image of Nawin being consumed by the mark flashes before Lucy's teary eyes. Those sinister red orbs glare back at her frozen form.

Bringing her hands up to cup over her mouth, Lucy takes steps back, stumbling on the pavement. She quickly feels sick, as if someone has just punched her in the stomach repeatedly.

"Lucy!" Serafall lunges ahead the second she sees the blonde collapses forward. She catches her just in time before her knees have the chance to collide to the ground.

Leviathan feels her heart breaks when her blazer becomes wet almost immediately. Lucy tries to hide her cry by burying her face within Serafall's chest, yet they still manage to escape to the world.

Standing there in her knees, all Serafall can only hope to do is hold Lucy close, stroking the back of her head and allowing her to cry out the sadness.

Serafall saw that look in Lucy's eyes when she left the house. There was a shimmer of hope behind those blue eyes. She can speculate because Lucy believed there was a chance she could still find her brother. Now, that hope is swiftly thwarted after what she had heard of Rias and her group's downfall.

Standing by the door, her hand inches from the doorknob, ready to grab it and open, Asia stares at the white wood in front with wide eyes. Her body is utterly fixed, and her feet feel as if they are glued onto the carpet beneath.

Being by the door, Asia manages to catch the entire exchange between Lucy and Serafall. Their words replay in her mind like a broken recorder. And each time she hears it, her heart only turns heavier.

Jerking her head up, Asia's pupils widen as that sliver of hope she had within her heart simply shatters away. And replacing that is realization. The realization that her beloved brother is truly gone and out of her reach.

"... Asia."

It takes a moment for Asia to register the voice calling from behind. Then, slowly, almost robotically, Asia turns around and comes face to face with her mother.

Yao stares at the tears flowing down her daughter's wide eyes. Her heart throbs at sight, and without saying a word, she makes her way over.

Dropping to her knees, Yao brings her daughter into an embrace, and that breaks Asia. With her arms gripping desperately tight onto her mother, Asia breaks down and sobs loudly, crying out the pain in her heart.

Asia now recognizes that the vision she had of her brother was not some mere bad dream. It was real. In his final moment with her, he said his goodbye to her and left. And to know that now, it only further pains Asia.

"H-He can't really be gone, Mama," Asia cries out, burying her face to the woman's chest as if attempting not to open her eyes to return to this terrible reality.

Yao can only hold closer to her daughter, her calm expression breaking to one of grief at the sight and sound coming from her precious daughter.

Sensing a presence behind, Yao peers back to see Jonathan standing there by the doorway. His eyes cloud with conflict by the sight of Asia crying and hearing Lucy's behind the door.

Yet, Jonathan does not hold second thoughts of their plan. He knows telling his daughters of Nawin's plan would lessen their pain. However, doing so will only hurt Nawin, and it would feel like Jonathan is betraying his son's trust.

Clenching his teeth, Jonathan turns his eyes to the left and stares at the family photo hanging on the wall.

This photo is special and one of Jonathan's favorites. It was shortly taken after they had introduced Asia to their family.

Jonathan eyes his son in the picture.

Smiling happily at the camera, Nawin has his right hand placed on top of Asia's head, who is just beaming, delighted to have been adopted to their family.

'Nawin... I hope are you doing well.'

Summit

"You going to be okay?"

Standing near the great wooden and steel doors that act as the gate to the council room, Sirzech reflects for a second to take the chance and glance back to his sister.

He still is adamant about bringing her to this gathering due to both concerns for her mental health and physical well-being. The last thing Sirzech wishes to witness is Rias breaking under pressure, or worse, she collapses under fatigue.

Hearing that concerned tone from her brother, Rias cannot resist not smiling at his care. In times like these, she can tell when her brother is all serious and not being his jovial self.

Though she adores her brother's optimistic and light-hearted side, he is always bright and kind to people around him, much like Issei in many ways. However, Rias does hold considerable respect for her brother's more serious side. The side of him that helped him attain the title of Lucifer and made him one of the most powerful beings standing in this age.

"I'll be fine, Brother," Rias reassures and brings her hand up to hold Sirzech's and gives him a firm squeeze.

That helps Lucifer as the concern bearing in his eyes fades away.

Giving one squeeze back to Rias, Sirzech returns his arm to the side and faces the door. His expression matures to serious. His eyes now hold this sharpness and power in them, commanding respect.

With one push from his right hand, Sirzech propels the doors wide open.

Exhaling her breath, Rias straightens herself to look most presentable. She dons a collective expression before following her brother into the oval-shaped room.

Hushes and whispers hovering within the room suddenly come to a halt by the presence of Sirzech Lucifer. Immediately, all eyes and attention shift towards him and Rias.

Having so many eyes directing towards her all at once, Rias feels the back of her hair rising. She sneaks a glance behind and sees the two heavily armed guards pushing the door shut before returning to their position beside the doors. For them, it looked like a lot of effort, while for her brother, it was as easy as opening a plain door.

Sirzech observes the attendance and notices that nearly everyone is present in their respective seats.

However, there is one absence that has Sirzech pause. He stares at the space with a nameplate written 'Leviathan.' The chair is vacant, absent of Serafall.

Sirzech peers to the chair beside that belong to Ajuka. The two meet eyes, and Ajuka responds with a shrug. It seems he, too, is unaware of their friend's whereabouts.

"Very good. With you here, Sirzech. We can commence this meeting," Jurin, the eldest of the Old Council, addresses. His cold, wine-red eyes shift attention to Rias for only a second before returning to Sirzech. He confers no concern over Gremory's presence. Rather, he'd expected it.

As Sirzech makes his way to his respective seat, Grayfia moves to Rias and leads her by the shoulder. She escorts the young girl to a vacant seat that's reserved for guests.

When Rias is seated, Grayfia does not return to her husband's side but stays with Gremory. Rias looks up and gets only a calm smile from the maid. "I'll be here just in case, Lady Rias."

Rias's expression relaxes, at ease by Grayfia's words. Then, with a slight smile, she nods at the Strongest Queen.

Sirzech can sense much anger emanating from the civilian clan leaders and some from the royal side. The atmosphere in the room is already tense and unnerving before he even has utter the first word.

'Whatever, Jurin and the other two have proclaimed... It seems many already grasps of Nawin's desertion.'

"Let us not beat around the bush, shall we?" A deep, melodic voice comes from a member of the Old Council.

Sitting on Jurin's left is a beautiful middle-aged woman with a fair complexion. Her sleek and long pale blue hair is tied into a ponytail. The cold, whitish amber orbs of hers stare toward Sirzech with impatience.

"Let's not get riled up here, Chiyu," Jurin lifts a hand, directing his longtime friend to control her emotions.

"Sirzech," Jurin begins and shifts sight to Lucifer. "We've received reports of a rather damning turn of event. I will be frank here because everyone is on edge..." Jurin's gaze hardens. "Has Nawin Makasha truly gone rogue?"

If a needle were to fall now in the room, it would be deafening with how quiet everyone becomes after Jurin's words.

All the eyes within the room are now solely focuses on Lucifer, demanding the factual answer.

Opening his eyes, Sirzech looks at all the council in their faces. His expression is calm and controlled.

"It is with great difficulty to say this to you all. But, yes. Nawin Makasha has gone rogue and has allied himself with Ophis."

Like that, various mana signatures spikes in outrage by the knowledge.

"How could you allow this to happen?!" A fist slam to the table as one of the civilian council raises to his feet. Enrage at the news being actual—many other members sharing similar reactions.

"Black Flash was supposed to be a beacon to our people! He was a hero to us! How could he have been corrupted! Lord Gremory!" One of the members shifts her attention to Zeoticus. "Nawin Makasha was under the protection of your house! How can you let this happen?!" "No," Another man rises up, and his eyes darts to Rias. "If anyone were to be held the biggest blame, it would be you, Rias Gremory. You were his King after all!"

"Silence!" Sirzech booming voice echoes throughout the room, and immediately, the members retreat back to their seats. A flicker of fear etches on their faces.

"He does bring up a valid point," Jurin calmly speaks up. His eyes slowly avert to Rias, who squirms in her seat when meeting eyes with him.

"Rias Gremory, Nawin Makasha is in your peerage. Meaning, in some ways, he is your responsibility. And knowing a girl such as yourself who truly views her peerage as family... To have such an event to transpired is rather unforeseen of you."

Those words set some fire within Rias. Jurin's words were clear on what he was secretly implying.

'He thinks I just let Nawin go without even putting a fight... That I did not care for him so!'

"It is clear you have not received the full report of what had happened, Council Jurin." Rias does not hold back, spatting those words.

Sitting next to Zeoticus, who raises a brow at his daughter's response, Rizel produces a smirk and crosses his arms. He can see the fire burning clear in Rias's eyes.

'Heh, Zeoticus's little girl may actually put on a show here.'

"Is that so?" Jurin raises a brow and leans forward, his arms resting comfortably on the cement table. His attention is all center on Rias. "Then please do elaborate for all of us."

"Before I get to that," Rias's eyes develop attentively, staring at equal grounds to Jurin's. She shows no nervousness under his piercing gaze.

"There is something I'd like to ask you, Council Jurin, personally." "Ask away, young Gremory." "Nawin left in secret with his peerage. Only Lord Ajuka, Grayfia, and my Brother discerned his actions to go rogue. And they all chose to keep it tightlipped in hopes of receiving Nawin by sending my group and me to chase after him. All of us wish for this not to go to the public because with Nawin's reputation being regarded as unmatched, the backlash it could create would be immense. My group only just returned, not even twenty-four hours following. So," Rias stares coldly into Jurin's eyes, "How exactly did you manage to get word of this so quickly?"

Sirzech pulls a faint frown at Rias's direct approach over the matter. He was planning to address, albeit in a craftier manner, to gauge out Jurin's reaction, slipping the question in under his nose.

Turning to Jurin, Sirzech sees him as calm as ever, not fazed by Rias's question. Even with curious eyes aimed towards him by the royal councils, Jurin stays composed.

"I was the one that caught Nawin Makasha's agenda to go awol."

Rias's eyes widen at the new voice entering the fray. Both turn and see Chiyo lifting a hand, her purple lips twisting into a devilish yet lethargic smirk.

"Y-You?" Rias stutters out.

Chiyo rests her chin down on top of her left hand. She gazes down at Gremory with faint amusement.

"Elaborate," Sirzech speaks up in a commanding tone, essentially ordering the councilwoman to answer.

Chiyo does not faze by the tone and shifts her sight to Lucifer.

"Nawin Makasha did keep his exit considerably secretive, but he was in Vesarima before he left." Chiyo brings a lock over to her right hand, twisting it between her fingers. "It was in the afternoon when I noticed him and his peerage. I went on my routine of visiting Lumos Tower to observe the beautiful sunset. Everyone knows Lumos Tower offers a view of the entire capital. Consequently, I spot Nawin and his peerage racing towards the gate. I thought not much of it till I saw him throw a dagger over the gate and soon vanish with his peerage."

Chiyo raises a brow and drops the lock from her fingers. "A rather peculiar behavior, is it not? Plainly, he wished not to be caught by the guards patrolling around the gate. If he were on some mission, he'd just walk through the gate."

"... Still," Rias pushes, "That was enough to convince you he went rogue?"

"You seem to have mistaken this, Rias. Sirzech just confirmed to us that Nawin Makasha has defected," Jurin inserts. "W-What?" "I held this meeting to question this odd behavior from the Black Flash. Chiyo implied that Nawin Makasha might have gone rogue after what she had witnessed. And acknowledging who he is, I do not take that assumption carelessly. I never blatantly suggested to you when you arrived here that Nawin Makasha has gone rogue now, have I? I merely inquired if it was true. And," Jurin throws a glance to Sirzech, "It is."

Rias presses her back onto the chair, her eyes wide in shock. She cannot believe that she got played. Everything she told just now further confirmed that Nawin has defected. She knew her brother would not hide about Nawin going to Ophis because it would be impossible to keep the lies going until, eventually, suspicion arose. And it will only shine a bad light on Sirzech if he were to play such a scheme.

Rias looks over to her brother and sees he is neutral. She assumes he had heeded Jurin's tactic but still goes through with it. He finds no sense in withholding the information.

Looking down at her tightly clenched hands, Rias curses herself for allowing Jurin to play her. She bites her lip hard, almost to the point it begins to bleed. She glares up at Jurin, who she can swear is smirking down at her even though his lip is as straight as a line. He knew he got her.

"Now," Jurin turns to Rias, gestures to her to continue, "With your question answered. Tell us what happened, Rias. You so far told us you and your peerage went after Nawin to retrieve him."

Rias clenches her hands tightly under the table. She looks ahead to her brother. Sirzech gives her a look, silently instructing her to calm down, not to allow Jurin to get under her skin.

Unclenching her hands, Rias exhales a breath through her nose. She can feel Grayfia's hand on her shoulder, giving a squeeze in support. Rias knows she cannot get riled up here.

Relaxing her mind, Rias opens her eyes and looks up at the council.

"With the help of Lady Hunter, we managed to reach the Land of Ends, where Nawin and his group were to be escorted to Ophis via a special gateway. My Queen, Akeno, managed to disrupt the gateway just before Nawin had a chance to enter it. We battled, but Nawin proved to be too strong of an adversary. He outclassed us and won the battle." Rias bit the bottom of her lip at the knowledge of their defeat.

"Issei Hyoudou managed to arrive in time, and he attempted to stop Nawin, but even with the best of his abilities, Nawin still won the bout. As a last resort, I used the command seal to stop him and tried to place him under a sleep spell, but Ophis intervened... I would have been killed till Hunter arrived to prevent Ophis's attack. Shortly after, Ophis took Nawin with her to Dragath."

Recalling the entire event is enough to make Rias want to slump down with grief. It is all still too fresh for her to simply speak out without feeling this frustration in herself over how it resulted.

"Even with all of your group there, you still failed to stop the Black Flash." One of the civilian council members states with disappointment. "I believe a lot of us thought you were better than this, Rias Gremory."

"You sure look comfortably there sitting on your fat ass while criticizing the princess, aye, council?" Rizel speaks up, slamming the rear of his feet onto the table, drawing all eyes on him. "Would you have fared better against the Black Flash?!"

"We all know how powerful and gifted of a warrior Nawin Makasha is," Zeoticus calmly speaks up. "And do not gloss over the fact that Rias and her group had to battle against their friend. They were in a difficult position that no doubt challenged them mentally. So none of you," Zeoticus eyes radiates crimson in warning, "Dare start freely criticizing her, or I will personally throw all of you out of here."

Zeoticus warning work as the members that were ready to throw words to Rias quickly shuts their mouths. Some have kept quiet and sympathized with the young Gremory's position. They can imagine how distressing it must be to go against a dear friend.

"Sirzech," Ajuka speaks up, promptly gaining everyone's attention. "You have advised us that Ophis has had her eyes on Nawin for the longest time. She even branded him with the Draconic Mark. To counter that, you placed a suppression seal over it to prevent a scenario like this from coming to past." "I did," Sirzech confirms, "However, Rias had informed me that the seal was absent when she saw Nawin. Only Ophis would be capable of breaking such a powerful seal so effortlessly."

"A moment," Lord Sitri brings his hand up, his stoic violet orbs staring at the Satans. "Let us get this straight before we proceed any further. The biggest question I have right now is how we should handle Nawin's action. Did he defect on his own accord, or did the Dragon God sway him?"

"Does it matter?" Chiyo sighs, leaning back to her chair and stretching her arms high up, a yawn escaping her lip. "He is presently a stray devil. He now will be placed in the bounty like the rest of the strays. And the bond that's bestowed to him from both Vesarima and the house of Gremory shall be revoked."

Many murmurs and hushes encompass the room after Chiyo's blunt statement.

"He is not like the rest of the strays," Sirzech sharply intervenes, "Strays become strays because they yearned to act out a heinous crime on their own accord. Nawin Makasha was tempted to go stray because of Ophis's influence."

"Nawin may not have left under his own omission," Jurin joins in, his voice still indifferent. "Nevertheless, it does not change that he is a deserter. Worse, he left for Khaos Brigade. A faction not long ago invaded Vesarima."

"Yeah," a member among the civilian council shouts, "It does not matter if he is the Black Flash! To go join with such a group is a full betrayal!" "He needs to be punished no matter what!" "Put him in the bounty! Dead or Alive!"

"NO!" Rias's voice explodes in the room, shocking everyone to silence.

Slamming both palms on the table, Rias raises to her feet. Her now crimson orbs glares up at the members of the council.

"I refuse to allow Nawin to be treated this way! Everyone here owes a debt of gratitude to him! He's protected Vesarima from Khaos Brigade, risking his life for the citizens! He's a big reason why Shigemi is in talks with us to form a trade relationship! Nawin has done so much for me, my friends, and the whole of Vesarima!"

So," Rias's mana spike, her eyes piercing at the civilian council section along with the Old Council. "I shall not stand by and allow any of you to pass unfair judgment on him. Especially when Ophis's influence through the Draconic Mark is the base reason for his defection! In my eyes, Nawin Makasha is a victim in all of this!"

A stun silence befalls the room, but it quickly breaks by a burst of roaring laughter.

Shocked, everyone turns to see Rizel clapping while carrying a broad grin on his face.

"Well said there, Rias. Now, for what it's worth," Rizel smirks, sending a wink to the shocked girl, "I vouch for you. There is no way in hell, Nawin Makasha should have his bond revoked. Huh," Rizel lets out an amusing chuckle, "Not like there are any common bounty hunters that stand a chance against him."

"I'll favor with Rias," Lord Sitri adds in. "Nawin Makasha is our ally that was swayed by the Dragon God. Saying that, I will overlook his actions, but to declare he's done it through his own omission is simply irrational."

A smile of relief bears upon Rias's face when she notices more members from the royal section voicing their agreements with Lord Sitri's explanation. Zeoticus looks down at her, carrying a proud smile before giving the nod in support.

Jurin listens to some of the civilian council siding with Sitri, voicing their opinion. He finally opens his eyes and looks down at the crimson-haired princess.

"To not reprimand him to any extent cannot be accepted," Jurin sharply asserts with a frown in disagreement.

"There should be no special treatment for such an act. Even if it was done under such particular circumstances."

Rias averts attention towards the third member in the Old Council group. He finally chooses to speak after simply listening in the background from the beginning.

'Moz.'

Sirzech brings a hand up to his face, hiding a scowl that's close to breaking from his lip. Out of the three members of the Old Council, Moz is the least he preferred. There was never a time when Sirzech ever felt at ease by that man's presence.

Rias stares at Moz and takes in his appearance for really the first time. He is a distinguished person—a tall, stature man with ashen skin and sharp pale-yellow eyes. His most distinguishing feature is his smooth, almost flat face.

Rias cannot help but shudder in unease by Moz's appearance. And that feeling only further fuels when he shifts his cold gaze onto her. Rias is never one too quick to judge a person, always giving them a chance. But, there is something about Moz that truly disturbs her.

"Rias Gremory, you should leave your emotions out of this room." "He's family to me," Rias snaps back. "Don't dare try to make me deem otherwise." "Enough, Rias," Sirzech orders, then stands from his seat, drawing everyone's attention.

"Nawin will be punished for his defection."

"Brother?!" Rias gawks at Sirzech in horror, not believing he'd side with Moz.

"But," Sirzech proceeds, "That will only happen when he is returned to Vesarima. He shall not be placed into the bounty. It is unjust to brand him as a criminal when he has done no harm to Vesarima as of yet. And his defection was not done on his own accord. Therefore," Sirzech shifts his eyes over to his sister, "I will be placing a special mission for Rias Gremory, Sona Sitri, and Riser Phenex along with their peerages. Their mission," Sirzech stares up at all the council with an expression that shows no room for disagreement, "To capture Nawin Makasha and his peerage. Return them to Vesarima so they can face a fair trial."

Everyone is caught off-guard by Sirzech's sudden proposal.

A big smile spread across Rias's face, realizing what her brother had just pulled. The tightness in her heart loosens in relief. She glances back and sees Grayfia sneaking a smile toward her husband.

'They must've planned this. Now,' Rias looks up to the council. 'None can go against brother's decision without any substantial reason. Especially when he added Sona and Riser into the mix.'

"Rias and her team failed," Lord Sitri remarks, pushing his glasses up the ridge of his nose, his eyes glow in intellect, dissecting Lucifer's words. "But, adding my daughter and her team. Along with Rizel's son with his team. And all of them focus on retrieving Nawin Makasha."

Lord Sitri bears a faint smile and nods. "Taking into account the determination that will surely burn inside all of them. I say your plan is sound, Lord Sirzech."

"And," Zeoticus looks at his daughter, "I suppose when it's time for the next bout with Nawin, you will be ready, Rias?" "Of course," Rias boldly replies, "I won't give excuses over my failure. Except when it's time for us to go against Nawin again. We will not fail. I shall do whatever it takes to bring him home. He's my peerage and, more importantly, my family," Rias looks up at the councils. "So let me and my friends handle this. Please."

"Also," Rizel lazily interjects, "Let's be real here." He opens one eye to gaze at the members. "The public reception to us deciding to put Nawin Makasha on the bounty and worse, to the kill list. Huh, expect some backlash when they discover what exactly had fallen to him."

With a knowing smirk, Rizel shifts to Lucifer, "I suppose you won't hold anything back when issuing this news to the public, Sirzech?" "Of course not. The public should know the truth of what had happened to Nawin. How they will react to the news is entirely up to them."

Ajuka sits there silently on his chair. Eyes close and arms crossed over his chest. Then, a smirk dances on his lip as he listens to how well Sirzech has executed his plan.

Many chatters from different council members agreeing with Sirzech's plan are increasing by the moment. It is looking impossible for anyone to go against it.

'Nicely done, my friend.'

Ajuka opens his eyes and gauges the expression on the Old Councils.

'Of course, they are indifferent. Aside from Chiyo, I've never seen them break to expose what they are truly thinking.'

"Well," Sirzech looks around at the council members before stopping dead on the Old Council. "Many parties vote to agree with my plan. So I take it there is no dispute?" Sirzech does not hide the challenge in his tone. He's about ready to storm out of here, already tiring of this conference.

Chiyo frown in displeasure while Jurin and Moz remain impassive, offering no response to the challenge.

"Do as you wish, Sirzech. I offer no conflict." Jurin stands up, crossing his arms behind his back. "I shall part with these words, though." Jurin shifts his eyes to Rias. "The next time you and your group face the Black Flash. I hope it will yield a better result. The longer he remains in Khaos Brigade, the greater the chance he will become trouble for us all."

Jurin's words do not sway Rias in the slightest.

Her still crimson eyes and piercing into the man's orbs. "Don't worry yourself over Nawin, Council Jurin. As I stated, I will take all the responsibility when it comes to him."

Jurin gives the faintest of smirks at Gremory's words before he teleports away, vanishing in the gray light.

Moz grants no response or even bothers to open his eyes. Instead, he activates the teleportation and departs the room.

Rias's heart skips a beat, and she gasps by suddenly coming to face with Chiyo. The Old Council appears from the blue and leans close to Gremory, staring straight into her eyes.

Behind Rias, Grayfia becomes tense but does not take action. Not yet.

Tapping the bottom of her plump lip with the index finger, Chiyo feels herself wearing a rather charming smile.

Rias is taken aback by the beautiful smile in front of her. It baffles her a moment at how Chiyo can transition so quickly and effortlessly when it comes to her outlook. A moment ago, she was devilish, working against her to try and place Nawin in the bounty book. Now, with that smile, she seems like the friendliest person in the room.

A shudder crawls down Gremory's spine. The hair at the back of her neck stands up. Rias cannot help but feel like she's staring at an individual with two different faces. And it is an unsettling presence.

"You care so immensely for Nawin Makasha," Chiyo lightly comments, that smile somehow growing even bigger. "Hopefully, he won't become too unrecognizable after being taken in Khaos Brigade."

The almost taunting tone Chiyo uses when saying that—and saying it with that smile. Rias feels her lip twitching, threatening to scowl at the woman openly. Her hands leaning by on sides starts clenching into fists.

"Come, Rias."

Placing a hand on his sister's shoulder, Sirzech throws one stern look at Chiyo before escorting Rias towards the door.

Hands resting on her exposed hips, Chiyo stares at the siblings' back. That bright smile of hers slowly morphs into a satisfied smirk.

A teleportation seal appears beneath, and Chiyo vanishes in a ray of purple glow.

The meeting room is still populated with councils speaking among each other. Many still retain a sense of disbelief over the knowledge of Nawin Makasha aligning with Khaos Brigade, willing to serve someone like Ophis.

"Ophis has branded him... It should not be a big of a surprise that this development followed." "I could never figure out why Ophis wanted the Black Flash? There are more powerful individuals in Khaos Brigade" "True. It is a mystery."

Rizel rolls his eyes at the chatter and kicks his feet off the table, standing up from his chair.

"Thanks for that, Rizel."

Letting out a deep chuckle, Rizel turns around and sees Zeoticus standing next to him. Wearing that ever-charming smile of his.

"I may not know Nawin greatly. Still, I do know he's done well by my son's side. Riser's change for the better ever since he has been friendly with Makasha and Hyoudou. Thus I am merely returning the favor with my support."

"It surprises me."

Zeoticus and Rizel watch Lord Sitri stopping next to them, making a close circle away from the other councils.

"Sora?" Zeoticus raises a brow, seeing his old friend donning that calculative expression.

Rearing his eyes up to both of his longtime friends, Sora opens his mouth to speak.

"They yielded without submitting much of a complaint or even a counter, for that matter. Odd, isn't it?"

Rizel shrugs his shoulders, not attempting to decipher or look too much into it. Zeoticus's eyes twinkle in agreement with Sora's words.

"Rias's heartfelt speech managed to sway the councils," Rizel states while crossing his arms over his chest. "She won the room, and Sirzech made it conclusive. So they retreated. Don't look too deep into it like you usually do, Sora."

Sitri exhales a sigh, nodding. "Perhaps you are right." "They are old fashion," Zeoticus remarks. "The word betrayal would hit them more in the nerve and give them added motivation to seek reprehension than most here."

"And come on," Rizel openly snorts, "After what transpired in the tournament's conference. I hold no doubt the three bear some animosity for Nawin." "Oh, no doubt," Sora nods in agreement.

Rizel looks beyond Zeoticus and sees many of the council members begin to flood out of the room. Some choose to exit through the door, while others simply teleport away.

"Your daughter showed some serious fire there," Rizel remarks, shifting attention back to his friend.

A hearty chuckle leaves the lips of Zeoticus.

"She certainly was showing a lot of her mother's side during those moments. But," the father carries a proud smile, "Her desire to rescue Nawin reached the council members and ultimately won them over. Sirzech's plan would not have been so easily executed if it were not for her words."

"Well," Sora pushes his glasses up, one sharp eye staring at Zeoticus, "Let us hope that when the time comes, and she goes against Nawin Makasha once more. She will be victorious."

Elsewhere

Breathing in the refreshing air through his mouth, filling his lungs up with it, Yuuto softly exhales.

Drawing a small smile, Yuuto stares at the petals dancing in the wind in front of him. Each of the petals is diverse in color. He marks all the colors swirling before his eyes.

Red, blue, yellow, green, black, and white. All the petals dancing within this small, secluded patio Yuuto has stumbled upon. Still, he does not grasp if this exotic place is privately owned or produced for the public's enjoyment.

Nevertheless, Yuuto does not care as the view around him is breathtaking. A welcoming sight after remaining stuck in the plain, monotonous wall, being the hospital's room.

Exhaling out another quiet sigh, Yuuto diverts his attention to the person responsible for uncovering this spellbound place.

Lifting her left hand to the air, Xenovia catches one of the leaves washing over her head. Drawing it down, she gazes upon the black petal fluttering between her fingers.

Yuuto feels his heart throbs at the stoic expression currently clouding over his lover's face. Her tears may have long dried up, but the redness around the edges of her eyes reminds him of when he had to console her in his arms.

Never before had Yuuto witnessed Xenovia cry as much as she did when learning of their failure to stop Nawin shortly after she awoke.

The memory of Xenovia's tears cuts Yuuto deep and brews this profound regret within his heart.

After giving everything she had in the battle, Xenovia placed her trust with him to bring Nawin back. Yet, he failed her and failed all of his friends. Worse, he failed Nawin.

"... I'm sorry."

The abrupt apology has the Quarta pull away from her daze. Blinking to reality, she leans to look over at Yuuto.

"For what?"

With a heavy smile on his face, Yuuto stops in front of Xenovia. He lifts his hand and catches a petal of his own—a white one. He gazes at the beautiful and bright thing between his fingers before looking at Xenovia.

"In failing to bring Nawin home... You place trust on me, and I-" "Don't beat yourself over that, Yuuto."

Xenovia closes her eyes to hide the emotions threatening to resurface. Then, releasing out an uneven sigh, she looks at Yuuto. A sad smile wears her lip. "I allowed my emotions to take over and blurted out such insensitive words. I was scared, and to ease it, I put such a burden on you. An unfair burden."

"Scared of failing?" Yuuto asks in curious. "Part of it," Xenovia averts her gaze back to the petal. Its color reminds her of Nawin. "I was more scared of the thought of losing another friend I dearly cherish."

"I've told you about the training I underwent to become an exorcist," "It was brutal," Yuuto remarks with deep anger lacing in the back of his voice. Xenovia becomes sadder, nodding. "Brutal is putting it generously. It never used to be so torturous, but the church decided to make some changes when it comes to the next generation of exorcists. And I was part of that generation."

A look of pain is cast over Xenovia's face as she reminisces back to her times in the church. Specifically the training she had to endure day in and day out.

"Six days a week. Nothing except training till the sunrise and nightfall. That was my whole life for years... And during those years, I have lost many of my friends. Some could not take it and be forced to leave the church for their well-being. Others broke under pressure and lost a part of themselves. They, too, left. No matter how many times it happened, I never became numb to it. Every time I make a friend, it only ends with me seeing them gone from my life so abruptly. And to speak the truth, if Irina were not to have stepped through those doors that day and joined the group, becoming my closest friend. I may have fallen under the pressure too."

Bringing his other arm over, Yuuto grasps Xenovia's hand and holds it firmly. "You understand well just how painful it is to lose your friends," "Too well," Xenovia murmurs.

Yuuto brings his right hand up, pushing the white petal to now lean next to the black petal. Xenovia dons a look of confusion while Yuuto wears a broader smile.

"Like you, I've gotten my friends taken away from me too soon. And not a day goes by; it does not haunt me. We both tried our best to stop Nawin because we don't wish to lose another friend that is precious to us."

"But," Yuuto slides the white petal in between Xenovia's fingers, having it stand there side by side with its black counterpart. "Though we have lost friends in the past, and there is nothing we can do now to bring them back, as much as we wish to. However, Xenovia, we change that with Nawin."

Yuuto softly claps his hand over Xenovia's and looks at her in the eyes. His expression, reserved with faith.

"Together, along with our friends, we will bring him home, Xenovia. So we will get another chance, unlike in the past."

Yuuto's words bring a realization to Xenovia. It helps her recognize that what he says is true. Though they may have failed first, there is another chance to correct that in the future. It is not a lost cause like her friends in the past, who are all entirely gone from her life.

With tears welling in her eyes, Xenovia grace Yuuto with a bright, beautiful smile. "Y-Yeah," she hiccups. "We won't lose him. When that chance visits, we will bring Nawin home. Then," Xenovia finds her eyes drawn back to the two petals, "All of us can be together again."

Releasing the petals, Xenovia watches them carry away by the wind. They split apart from each other, looking to go on their separate journey. However, Xenovia's smile widens when she sees the petals reunite higher in the air. Flying side by side as they disappear over the green hedge.

"Yuuto..." "Hmm?" "I want to become stronger. That battle with Senpai... It revealed just how behind we were. I replayed that battle in my head so many times since I awoke. And I'm so irate at myself for being that weak."

Xenovia looks down to Yuuto. Her yellow eyes now burn with expectation. "If we are to succeed in bringing Senpai home. We need to be thoroughly prepared when that next time comes."

Yuuto nods, then lean in to plant a soft kiss on Xenovia's forehead. He pulls out and looks her in the eyes.

"My sentiments exactly. I'll be there with you at every step of the way. We'll train together and grow stronger together."

Xenovia beams by having her lover's full support. Then, with a soft laugh leaving her lip, she pulls Yuuto into a big embrace, a gesture which he happily returns.

Hospital

When the world around her eventually comes to a standstill, Rias lets out a sharp exhale in easing her lungs. She reopens her eyes to lay it upon the large, three-story building painted entirely in white not far from where she stands.

Rias fails to hold back the frown expanding on her face at the sight of the hospital.

"Never were a fan of hospitals," Sirzech remarks, noticing the look. "Is anyone?" Rias glances at her brother. "Visiting hospitals only spells adverse events that had befallen on oneself."

"Away with that frown on your face, Rias," Sirzech lightly chuckles and brings a hand down to Rias's head, ruffling the soft crimson locks. "You should be happy."

Rias blinks and faces her brother fully with a questionable look on her features.

"You are consumed with worry, Lady Rias," Grayfia softly points out. "We achieved the result we desired in the assembly." The Queen's smile edges slightly wider. "You shall have some good news to present to your friends."

The cloud of gloom vanquishes almost promptly when Grayfia's words thoroughly register with Gremory's mind.

"... Yeah."

A small smile makes its way on Rias's face. "You are right, Grayfia."

"You did well in there, Rias," Sirzech inserts. A proud grin adorns his face. "You've stood up through all the onslaught and did not waver. Furthermore, your passion for desiring to defend Nawin resonated with the councils. If I had not let you gone there with me, things might have ended for the worse."

The smile on Gremory's face only grows after her brother's high praise.

"You're giving me too much credit, brother" "Nope," Sirzech swiftly disagrees. "My plan would not have worked as well as it did if it were not for you. You've done well by Nawin's side, Rias. You should understand that." "As I said in that room. Nawin's a victim. I will not stand for any misjudge aimed towards him."

Rias pauses for a moment, staring at the dirt ground beneath her feet. Finally, she looks at her brother.

"You chose to make Nawin's departure known... Coul-" "You know I cannot string them along, Rias," Sirzech softly cuts in. "The end to that straw will only damage my reputation and paint Nawin in a poor light. Even if I were to lie and push it hard that they'll believe I've assigned Nawin to a long-term contract. It still will operate on temporary bases, and they will continuously be on my back to expect news of Nawin's return."

Sirzech bears a wane smile at his sister.

"Now that Ophis finally has her hands on Nawin. She won't be giving him up easily. I have little doubt she will be keeping him remotely from every major village, absent from many spy eyes. Your chances of finding him will be scares, Rias. Hence the tremendous risk for me to go that route of deception."

"I..." Rias pause before heaving a deep sigh. With no proper counter to give, she admits understanding with a nod. "Your reason is fair, brother. I just... I wish it still wouldn't have to come to this. Even though we prevented Nawin from being placed in the bounty book and his bond revoked. He still will be acknowledged as a stray, a traitor by the masses."

"When words get out out this. Some will judge Nawin's defection more harshly than others. Even taken into account of Ophis's influence," Sirzech states, "Not much can be done to improve that, Rias. Moreover, do not look past that even though Nawin may be viewed in high regard by many. There is a party that does not share that sentiment. Although Nawin's brashness and willingness to speak out his mind have earned him admiration from the people, it has also irked others in the past."

"And the ones against Nawin will be damning him the moment they are conscious of the news," Rias asserts. She does not try to hide the anger surfacing her eyes or spilling from her tone.

"Hey now," Sirzech taps Rias's forehead with an index finger, rearing her attention back to him. He bears a familiar smile. One that reassures all will be fine.

"While there will be people who view Nawin under a bad light. There will be many more that shall perceive Nawin as a victim to Ophis. Alike you, Rias. So refrain from getting bogged down with all of this negative thought. Have faith in the people."

Lucifer's wise words hold the effect it intended as Rias manages to soothe herself. The tenseness that is quickly growing upon her shoulders subsides.

"Yeah," Rias bears a lighter smile, "I'm sure numerous groups will comprehend the full picture." "Indeed they will," Grayfia reassures, "Allow me to remind you, Lady Rias, that Sirzech intends to reveal all in the report. So the public shall be aware of everything. The Draconic Mark included."

Gremory's smile only widens by hearing this. That heavy feeling of doubt and uneasiness bubbling in the pit of her stomach vanishes by the couple's thoughtful words.

"Now," Sirzech's tone turns stern, "It's time for you to return to bed, Rias. Enough with the worry. After done getting your friends up to date with what happened, I want you to relax for the day. Understand?"

Rias is unable to suppress the soft giggle escaping her lip at the sudden shift in Sirzech's mood. Now he's acting just like how an older brother would.

"Understood. Thanks for everything, brother. And you too, Grayfia."

"Rest well, Lady Rias."

Giving one last pet to Rias's head, Sirzech steps back to stand beside his wife.

Flicking her fingers, Grayfia promptly signals for the teleportation.

"You have done more than enough, Rias," Sirzech says. "We'll continue everything tomorrow. Focus on your well-being for now."

Bearing a parting smile on their faces, Sirzech and Grayfia are swiftly whisked away by the teleportation seal, dissolving amidst the shimmering silver light.

Now by her lonesome, Rias draws in a deep breath, filling her lungs with the fresh air of Vesarima before releasing it all in a gentle exhales. She does not realize how much she needs that till now.

The tightness that's been weighing upon her heart since she came to becomes noticeably less so. Her muscles, now more loose and nimble. No longer does Rias feel as if there's this big boulder strap upon her back.

For the moment, all the worry and anxiety have subsided from her consciousness.

'All right,' Rias reopens her eyes to gaze towards the hospital. A faint smile carries on her lip. 'Best tell the others of the good news.'

"Buchou?"

Before Rias has the chance to take the first step, a voice calls for her out from behind. Turning around, Rias blinks in surprise at seeing Yuuto and Xenovia walking towards her.

"Yuuto, Xenovia," Rias softly mutters. "What are you two doing out here?"

Although none of them sustained significant injuries, the doctors still press that all of them should remain in bed to recuperate efficiently.

"Got bored," Xenovia casually replies while crossing her arms behind her head. "Staying in that room all day would drive anyone mad."

Rias lets out a short snort as she entirely agrees with the comment. "Can't scold you on that. Though," Rias wears a smile, examining her Knights, specifically at their eyes, "You two seem to be... Happier."

The dull, desolate eyes from before are now absent. Their expression, no longer hollow. There's life on them now. And their eyes, presently shining with vigor and enthusiasm.

The sight is truly welcoming for Gremory and only serves to widen the smile that's already plaster on her face.

The couple shares a look at one another. Yuuto lets out a grin while Xenovia smirks.

"A bit of talking can go a long way," Xenovia fondly speaks before facing Rias. "Can't afford to be depressed forever. We may have lost now. However, we will get Senpai back next time."

Quarta's words leave Rias speechless. The conviction behind her tone is unmissable.

"... Yeah," Gremory's expression brightens. "Next time, we will win and bring Nawin home."

Getting to hear those words emanating from her friend helps solidify Rias's belief. She may have announced those similar words during the assembly to win over the councils, yet it would be a lie if she said she fully believed in those claims. Her passion was as genuine as it could be. But her belief to achieve the task she declared was not as strong as she would've preferred.

It is easy for Rias to endure doubts. She vividly recalls how Nawin decimated them in the Land of Ends, how he humbled them. He showed them just how significant of a difference they were to him in terms of power. He revealed to them plainly how hopeless it blatantly was to defeat him.

The feelings she experienced during the course of that harrowing battle will be something that lives within Rias for the eternity of her life.

"Are you ok, Buchou?"

Rias removes herself from her thoughts when hearing Yuuto's concerned voice.

"Pardon me," Rias provides a reassuring smile, "Just lost in my train of thought. Let us head inside. I have some news to share with everyone."

The Knights nod and accompany their King to the building.

Xenovia tilts her head and hops forward to land beside Rias, strolling next to her.

"What's this news?"

Rias chuckles amusingly. "Can't you wait?" "It involves, Senpai, right?" "It does," "Well, now I'm inquisitive."

Standing now at the bottom of the stairway that leads up to the front doors of the hospital, Rias turns around to face Xenovia, her smile now absent.

"There's a lot to go through, so I rather not rehash it all with the others too. Just know that I got the result I wanted."

Rias's answer eases the anxiety in Xenovia's heart. "So, good news?" "Yeah," Rias nods, more at ease. "Good news. Now," she turns ahead and begins walking up the stairs, "Let us go share it with the rest."

Halfway through the steps, Rias's left foot suddenly loses its balance, causing her to slip. Her body falls ahead, hurrying straight to the concrete steps.

A breeze blows from the side, and Yuuto catches Rias before she can connect the stairs. Then, tugging her arm over his shoulder, keeping a proper hold by her waist, Yuuto assists her back to her feet.

"T-Thanks, Yuuto," Rias sighs out before offering a gracious smile to her Knight. "Not a problem, Buchou. Let's head in so you can rest."

"When was the last time you had a proper sleep, Rias?" Xenovia asks, finally noticing the black bags underneath Gremory's eyes. Her face is also paler than normal. "... Days. I honestly can't give the exact number," Rias gives a weak chuckle. "For long, I was simply focused on searching for Nawin. So sleeping wasn't my concern."

"Well," Xenovia walks past the pair and stops in front of the door. Grasping the lever in her hand, Xenovia pulls it open before turning to Rias. A soft smile wears on her lip. "You have done more than enough for him, Rias. You should focus on yourself for now and get better."

"Yeah. You're right," Rias utters with a tired smile.

With the help of Yuuto, Rias ascend the stairs and reaches the top. Wanting to save Rias's face from the eye of the public, Yuuto releases her when he's confident she can stand on her own two feet.

"Thank you, Yuuto." "Not a problem."

Now on a solid surface, Rias walks on her own feet and enters the building. Xenovia and Yuuto follow closely behind.

Entering the reception space, Rias makes a moment to scour around. Her expression relaxes in relief. The room is empty—no patients or visitors in sight.

Xenovia raises a brow then throws a glance over toward her lover.

"Why so dead?" "It's a private hospital. This one, in particular, is mostly used by royals. So it does not get crowded here often."

"In truth," Rias glances back, "People will only really visit hospitals if it's grave. Potions that you purchase in the local drug stores can be dealt against most illness effectively."

"That makes sense. Then taking healing magic to account," Xenovia muses.

Rias shifts attention ahead and scours the room once more, now to find the stairway leading up the second floor.

Spotting it to the left end in the room, Rias readies to walk till something catches her eyes.

"Urgh?!" Rias's heart skips a beat when her eyes catch a glimpse of golden locks fluttering at the stairway, disappearing around the corner.

The gasps instantly draw Yuuto's attention. He looks over to notice his King's expression. Shock and disbelief are written all over her face.

"Buchou?" Yuuto calls out in concern. "Something the matter?"

Rias blinks and shakes her head. A small patch of cold sweat falls from her forehead as she turns to Yuuto. "My mind may be playing tricks on me... But I thought I saw a glimpse of Asia just now."

"Asia?" Xenovia frowns. "Doubtful, Rias. Why would she be here? She does not even know of Senpai's situation yet."

Yuuto stares at Rias for a moment before rearing his attention to the stairways. It's empty.

'And I can't sense her mana...'

"You may be hallucinating, Buchou," Yuuto comments and looks back to his King. A soft smile bears on his face. "You are exhausted. Your worry for Asia may be getting to you." "Yeah," Xenovia nods. "You should honestly rest up, Rias."

"Thanks for your concern, you two. But," Rias woks hard to muster up a firmer smile, "I want to inform you all of the news before I hit the bed."

The Knight nods when seeing Rias is set firm on this. So they continue following her towards the stairway.

"Ah, Princess Gremory!"

A nurse exiting one of the rooms spots Rias and her party. She rushes towards them with an ever-pleasant smile adorning her young face.

"Yes?" Rias blinks, wondering why the nurse wishes to speak with her. "Is something the matter?" "Oh, no," the nurse waves her hand. "I just wanted to inform you that you have a visitor" "Visitor?" Rias repeats before glancing back to the empty reception area.

"Hm?" the nurse also notices something amiss and searches the room. She scratches her head. "That's weird... She was just here. I'd say I'll be escorting her to your colleagues after checking in on a patient."

Rias feels her heart throbbing faster with each passing word leaving the nurse's mouth. Behind, Yuuto and Xenovia share a look.

Abruptly, Rias breaks off towards the stairs. Her heart is pounding, and her eyes are wide.

'She can't be here!'

"Buchou/Rias!"

Rias ignores the call of her Knight the same as she is ignoring the burning sensation coursing through her legs. Then, with a discomforting grunt, Rias jumps high and passes all the steps before swiftly turning around the corner to face another flight of stairs.

The pain for the moment is relatively numb, hidden by the adrenaline. Rias push on and jumps high again to arrive on the grounds of the second floor.

Panting hoarsely, Gremory sinks to one knee, unable to be on her feet anymore. Her body is screaming for her to stop. Yet, Rias ignores it and shakily rears her head to the left to look down the hallway.

Her heart momentarily halts.

Wandering steadily through the hallway, those striking gold locks fluttering with each step is none other than Asia. Donning casual clothes, the Bishop has her back faces Gremory's wide eyes. Heedless of the stare.

"Buchou!"

Yuuto appears beside Rias and swiftly kneels to her side. The concern is written all across his face. Xenovia arrives subsequent, and she notices Rias's startling gaze.

Eyes narrowing, Xenovia follows it to down the hallway. A sharp gasp escapes her lip.

The sound of Yuuto's voice reaches Asia and has her pause in her steps. Tilting her head in confusion, she slides her left foot to the side and slowly rotates around to face the source.

The time comes to a slow for the party as their gaze eventually sets on Asia's face. In an instant, all of them feel as their world comes to a sudden halt. Their hearts leap up to their throats.

Standing there fully facing the trio, Asia stares at them with those brilliant green orbs no longer sealed behind their lids. So bright and stunning they are that it is unmissable.

"N-No way," Xenovia murmurs under her shaky breath. Her eyes unblinking, in disbelief. Her mouth agape.

Yuuto carries no words. His right arm that hovers near Rias's shoulder is entirely frozen in place. His expression broadens in shock.

"A-Asia..." Rias whispers.

She blinks and blinks till her eyes begin to well up. No matter how many times she closes and reopens her eyes, Asia still remains there in her sight. Not some fabrication made up from her weary mind or even a dream. Those green orbs gazing at her right now are real. No longer are they hiding away by the curse.

"Asia!" Rias calls out. Her quivering lip, forming a small smile. She tries to stand but ends up collapsing onto the floor. Her body no longer obeys her request.

When she sees Rias tumble to the hard floor, Asia immediately takes action and rushes over.

The sound of Gremory's body hitting the ground snaps Yuuto out of his shock, and he promptly returns attention to his King.

"Buchou!"

Lifting and placing her gently on the floor on her back, Yuuto notices a shadow and looks up to see Asia kneeling on the other side of Rias.

Once again, Kiba finds himself transfixed over those green orbs. Not believing what his eyes are perceiving.

Without speaking a word, Asia places both hands tenderly on the center of Rias's chest. A familiar pair of silver rings form around the middle fingers. And promptly, green mana manifests from the rings.

While this is all occurring, Rias's eyes do not leave Asia for even a second. She examines and takes in all the features on the blonde's face. And Rias is beyond happy that she can read what emotion is now coursing through those green orbs.

Concern yet also a lingering of relief.

Gradually, Gremory feels the burning sensation plaguing her legs begin to subside. The discomfort and pain expression on her face loosens.

"Urgh?!"

Rias's heart grows heavy when she finally catches sight of the faint redness surrounding the edges of Asia's eyes. The red veins are unmissable this close—evident aftermath of crying.

When the blinding mana slowly begins to fade, Rias manage to decipher it now. The deep sorrow buried behind those green orbs.

Retracting her arms from Gremory and setting them on her lap, Asia offers a smile. A weak one.

"I've stopped the pain, but you need to re-"

Asia halts when her friend sits up, then abruptly pulls her into an embrace.

"I'm sorry, A-Asia," Rias sobs out, "I'm so sorry I could not have stopped him. But, believe m-me when I say that I tried my best. All of us did!"

Asia sits there motionlessly, listening to Rias's sobs. Then, her eyes start to become glossy, welling up with fresh tears.

Lifting her arms, Makasha wraps them firmly around Gremory's form. Finally, she breaks out in her own sob, burying her face on her friend's shoulder.

Yuuto slowly returns to his feet and steps back to give the pair some space. He peers over at the sound of a sniff from the side and sees some tears trickling down Xenovia's face.

Knowing Quarta is striving hard to hold her cry in, Yuuto lifts his arm and wraps it around her shoulder to pull her in. She does not hesitate to wrap her arms around him, concealing her face near his neck as she releases her tears entirely.

"... I never doubt you did not, Buchou."

Slowly pulling away, Asia sniffs before bringing her arm up, wiping the droplets with the back of her hand. Her eyes, now redder and stinging from all the tears.

Asia attempts to muster up a healthy smile, but it only ends up being half of one. "Please know that I hold no gripes toward you or the others, Buchou."

Asia spares a glance to Yuuto and Xenovia. "I comprehend how hard it must've been for all of you... To battle Onii-chan. I-I," she looks down to her hands, palms wide open, "I don't think I could ever lift a finger at him. I love him too dearly even to consider hurting him."

"Even then," Xenovia sniffs as she wipes the last tears from her cheeks, "We tried our best to bring him back, Asia. Still... It just was not enough. I'm so sorry."

Asia simply responds with a nod. She does not need to say the words that are lingering within her mind. It'll only rub salt on the wound.

Unlike the members of the group, Asia has been there when her brother would train in solitude. It became one of their bonding moments. She'd go with Nawin early in the mornings and do some light exercises with him. Then, when that's over, she'd simply sit on the grass and listen to him train till he was satisfied. Following that, she'll heal him of any injuries he afflicted on himself.

Asia comprehends adequately just how powerful her brother is. She has sensed the times when he genuinely tries to go all out. And in those flickering moments when she felt the power lurking within her brother, Asia comes to understand that he is on another level when compared to all the members of their group.

Though Asia profoundly dislikes viewing her friends in a smaller light as she appears now. She cannot turn her back on reality. That being she was not completely caught off-guard when discovering the outcome.

Wiping the remnant of tears left, Asia exhales a soft sigh. After all the cries. She does not believe there are any tears left within her. In truth, she feels emotionally drained.

"All right," Asia faces Rias with a weak smile.

Taking her friend's hands into her own, Makasha extends her knees, helping Gremory return to her feet.

With Asia assisting in balancing her, Rias manages to stand suitably straight. Although the pain is now forgotten, the fatigue is still very present.

"You need to rest, Buchou." "Ehehe," Rias cannot help but chuckle at those words, "I've been hearing that all day from many." Asia's smile widens slightly. "Cause it's true."

"I'll take a rest but only after talking to the others." Rias bear a big grin, the biggest one she had given in a long time. "Everyone will be elated to see you, Asia."

Amidst the successful outcome in the assembly and now Asia being here with her eyes miraculously uplifted from the curse. Rias feels as if good fortune is finally smiling down upon her and her dear friends.

A thing they desperately are in need of after everything.

"Let us go see them then," Asia asserts and turns to resume walking down the hallway once more. She still has one hand holding to Rias just in case.

Yuuto watches Rias following Asia closely. The calm smile on his face wanes though at noticing a shift in Asia's behavior. The kind and caring nature that always follows Asia are still ever-present, yet Yuuto senses this almost apprehension from her when she speaks.

'... I imagine you desire to just up and leave to search for Nawin.'

When reaching the door, Asia looks to the side at the number plate. "Room 204..." "They are all in there. It's the biggest room on this floor," Rias remarks.

Giving a simple nod, Asia looks ahead to the white door. Her expression is calm, almost stoic even.

That look on Makasha's face draws a throbbing pain to Rias's heart. Again, the guilt rears its ugly head.

However, Rias suppress that feeling down to focus on what's in front of her. She holds this hope that reuniting with the others will help Asia just as much it'll help them.

"Nervous?" Rias warmly asks. "... A little."

Not letting the short answer bother her, Rias turns to the door and grabs the handle. Then, she slides the door to the side with a pull, fixing it at the very end to have it wide open.

Inside the room, Issei is the only one to perk at the sound of the door opening. He shifts his eyes away from the windows and looks over toward the entrance. The curtains had been pulled aside by the nurse earlier under his request.

Seeing who is the first to enter the room draws a loud gasp out of Issei.

Hyoudou's noise draws the others' attention. And when seeing him gawking toward the doorway, all of them shift their eyes to follow.

"A-Asia?!"

Koneko's whole persona comes to life by the sight of her best friend. Almost in instinct, her body wants to move and rush over to the blonde's side. However, before she has the chance to, she is left fixed in place when coming to eye with those green orbs.

"I-Impossible..."

Raising from the bed, Akeno gawks with wide eyes at the blonde. Like the others in the room, she is in disbelief with what she is witnessing.

Releasing Rias's hand, Asia steps into the room to fully present herself. Her eyes trail to all of her friends, one by one.

A weight burdening Makasha's shoulders finally lifts away when she has the chance to fully observe all of her friends' conditions. Even though she acknowledges what the nurse had assured her that none of them had sustained any fetal injurious, Asia still worried until she could see it with her own eyes.

"I'm so glad," Asia starts with a brighter smile than before gracing her face. "You all are in fine health."

"Asia-chan!"

Crying out with joy, Gasper pounces out of his bed with newfound vigor. Landing in front of the blonde, he draws her into a big hug.

Though surprised at first, Asia releases a hearty giggle and accepts the warm embrace from the Dhampir.

Hearing footsteps from the right, Asia peers over to see Koneko stopping next to her. Those yellow orbs, still wide in unbelief and staring undeviatingly into her eyes.

Then, a teardrop trickle from Toujou's eyes. Asia simply smiles and reaches out to pull her friend in to join the embrace.

Heaving a shaky sigh from her mouth, Rias stares at the heartwarming scene with a smile. Some heat builds in her eyes for a moment, and a teardrop does sneak out.

Crossing her arms under her chest, Rias examines the grins sharing between the trio. Their giggles, filling and brightens the room. Rias's gaze shifts to the others, and she sees the rest of the group also bearing their own smile at the scene. Their eyes all rest on the young members.

For a moment, everyone in the room is happy. Ignorant by the event that had befallen. And it is a sight Rias begged to witness since she awake. Her tired heart swells with warmth and relief.

"Buchou," Yuuto whispers from behind. "Please have a seat next to Issei-kun. You shouldn't burden yourself by standing long."

Rias nods and complies with her Knight's advice.

Noticing his lover walking towards him, Issei bears a warm smile before scooching over to the edge to make space on the bed.

Xenovia returns to her bed while Yuuto stays behind for a moment.

Sliding the door shut, Kiba presses his right palm on its center space and assigns a suppression seal. For this moment, no one can hear anything leaving out of this room.

The Knight turns around and meets eyes with Rias. She offers a small nod to approve his decision. He returns the gesture before heading to take a seat by Xenovia's side.

"You nee-" "Sleep?" Rias finish the line for her lover while carrying an amusing smirk. "I know, I know. I must really look awful, hmm?" "I don't think I can ever be able to describe you as awful, Rias," Issei admits while watching her take a seat by his side. "You're too gorgeous for that word. You just look exhausted."

Rias fondly giggle at the sweet words then leans in to give Issei a soft kiss on the cheek. "I'll sleep in a moment. There's a matter at hand that needs to be dealt with."

The pair shift attention to Asia.

"How?"

Koneko pulls away then brings both hands to cup Asia's cheeks, gazing at those green orbs. It's been so long that Koneko has forgotten how beautiful they are. So lively and green like a forest.

Asia's smile falters slightly at the question, but she opens her mouth.

"Onii-chan helped me."

Everyone feels like they've been hit by a hammer when hearing Asia's referring to Nawin. The smiles occupying their faces vanish, and replacing them is shocked.

"Nii-chan?!" Gasper chokes out, wiping away the tears clouding his vision. "H-He lifted the curse?"

Asia grows silent for a moment. Then, an image of Sayomi settles into her mind. She contemplates if she should reveal the truth that could possibly paint her brother in a worse light. Now that he's gone, she does not know if what had happened would be something he'd want to be revealed.

"Asia."

Makasha blinks out of her thoughts and views up to see Rias looking at her. A reassuring expression dons on her face.

"I guarantee that whatever the answer is, we will not misjudge Nawin. We won't look at him any differently other than being our dear friend."

'That's right...'

Asia looks at her friends and remembers what they went through in an attempt to bring her brother back. She should not contain any doubts with them. Her concern for Nawin has blinded her to that.

"Onii-chan helped with lifting the curse, but he was not the one to have done it." Asia breathes to calm her nerves before looking up to her friends. "He took me to meet with Sayomi Dracul. And she was the one responsible for dispelling the curse on my eyes."

"Sayomi?!" Issei shouts out in shock.

Many members of the group are equally stunned by this unexpected revelation.

However, Rias and Akeno received the news with more grace. Their eyes find theappearo each other for a short moment.

'Sayomi's company was what I needed during that hard time. If it wasn't for her... I'd be in bad shape by now.'

Both vividly recollect Nawin's words concerning the Pureblood. It's grown apparent to them by now that Nawin no longer views Sayomi Dracul as an adversary.

Opening her eyes, Rias spares a glance over at Issei.

"Have you been briefed with everything that had occurred?" "Yeah. Yuuto put me up to date after I woke up" "Good."

Rias shift her face to turn to all of her friends.

It has become apparent," Gremory raises her voice, drawing everyone's attention. "That Nawin no longer discerns Sayomi as a threat." "I had a hunch that could be the case," Issei speaks up. "When we were in Brasov. Not once did Nawin appear hostile towards Sayomi. I mean, he actually encourages all of us to make temporary peace with her."

"Wouldn't that be a logical move on Senpai's part?" Xenovia inserts, "We all know how powerful she is. Becoming antagonistic towards her would only spill danger."

"It's not that..."

Everyone turns toward Akeno, surprised by her acknowledgment and decision to join the conversation.

Brushing her hand over the crafted metal threads, Akeno stares at the black diamond glistering on the bracelet. Then she looks up to the Knight.

"You weren't present on that mission, Xenovia. If had Nawin-kun positively still seen Sayomi as an enemy, he would have been more on guard. Tense and full of caution. Yet, when Sayomi was standing right beside him, Nawin-kun was perfectly calm and unguarded in her presence."

Biting her lip, Akeno shifts her gaze towards the window, desiring to look away from the many eyes watching her.

"He was comfortable in her presence, and she was with his."

Xenovia is stunned by this new piece of information.

Rias softly frowns while studying her best friend with an eye of concern. Though she may not show it outside, Akeno is greatly suffering still from the defeat.

Since entering the room, Rias has perceived the signs. How Akeno is constantly sneaking glances towards the bracelet. Focusing and observing that diamond to receive the slightest clue regarding Nawin's well-being. She's in constant apprehension.

"The question then becomes," Yuuto speaks up. "Why the sudden shift in view? We all know comfortably of Nawin's once hatred for vampires. Sayomi Dracul and her actions fundamentally were what created this deep hatred Nawin had carried over the vampires for so long. And that hatred reached to a point he became incredibly hostile towards Gasper when they first met."

"That's right." Issei vividly remembers that instance.

It is a rare sight to witness Nawin ever becoming that furious. Issei can never forget that look his friend carried when discovering that Gasper was a vampire.

"That sort of hatred does not casually wither away."

"There is no point in us speculating when we are scares of evidence," Rias cuts in and retakes the rein of the conversation. She reverts her attention to Makasha.

"Asia, I see you want to say something. Please, speak." Rias did not miss the expression on the blonde's face when Issei finished his thoughts. She clearly wishes to interject but is hesitant.

Asia remains silent for a moment, contemplating if she should speak out her mind. But then, she swiftly erases the doubt. She is among her closest friends. Hesitation is not required here.

"I will forever find hard-press to forgive Sayomi for what she had done to me. And, it'll take even more strength to have me forgive her for harming my friends and my Onii-chan. Yet, when I met her... Though I could not see her, I could sense her, feel her presence."

Asia places a hand to her chest, recollecting from memory.

"She did not wear that malicious or dark aura around her anymore. So though, I was nervous and scared. Deep down, I knew she would not lift a finger on me at that moment because there's no evil intent in her bones."

"Asia..." Koneko whispers with wide eyes. "What are you trying to say?"

"Sayomi Dracul had done a lot of bad things to us all. But, the person I met that day was entirely a different Sayomi. She... She was kind and genuine."

"Wait a moment," Issei interject. Skepticism writes clear on his face. "Asia, don't you think she could be playing you?!"

Asia shakes her head then shifts her eyes to Hyoudou.

"Before she lifted the curse, she apologized to me and said that she regretted placing that curse on me. For someone as powerful as her to openly apologize to a person she barely knows... Much less cares. It can't be for mere play."

Again, Makasha's retelling of the Pureblood leaves everyone speechless and conflictive.

"And," Asia closes her hand, clenching the fabric of the shirt. Her expression softens at the recollection. "She said to me that I am a wonderful little sister to Onii-chan. And... The sincerity in those words cannot be deceived."

A silence befalls upon the room, with everyone unable to respond to what Makasha had said.

'Satans...' Rias internally cusses, bitting the nail of her thump in frustration. Her mind is in scrambles with questions. 'Sayomi Dracul... Why is it every time we learn something anew about you, it simply exposes more doors for pondering.'

"Sayomi Dracul..." Akeno squeezes the sheets into her hands. Her eyes, glaring out the window to the purple sky. "Just what exactly do you want?" she mutters under her breath. This mystery shrouding the Pureblood is reaching a point it aggravates her to no end.

"There's no point in us pondering about this." Rias finally speaks up, shaking her head, ridding the thoughts of the Pureblood. She turns to face her friends.

"Sayomi Dracul's goals and her connection with Nawin are too shrouded in mystery. Although, it does give me an abundance of relief to now hold more confidence that she no longer acts as a threat to Nawin like in the past. And judging by her interaction with Asia. I feel some sense of assurance that as long as we don't antagonize her, she will leave us be."

"I guess you are right on that," Issei exhales a deep sigh. He feels a weight is lifted off his shoulders. "All of us are well aware of how powerful Sayomi is. If she does not pose a threat to us anymore, then I only see that as a win."

"What happened after she removed the curse, Asia-chan?" Koneko tenderly asks. She hopes her friend can shine some more light on this mystery.

"Not much else," Asia bears a regrettable smile. "Removing the curse was very taxing on my body. I... I caught a glimpse of Onii-chan as he caught me. He was wearing such a big smile on his face," Asia paused for a moment to stable herself, her eyes stinging at that image arising in her mind. However, quickly, Asia feels Koneko grasping her hand, giving a comforting squeeze. "He was so overjoyed to see my eyes again, but we could barely converse before I passed out. During the next few days, my body was recuperating, so I was in bed, asleep through the procedure."

"... Please," Asia faces Rias. Her eyes, full of plea. "Explain to me what occurred with Onii-chan, Buchou. I want to understand everything. I-I need to learn why he took such drastic actions. The last time I saw Onii-chan, he was the same loving brother I had always known and loved. How can things change so much in such a short amount of time?"

Rias grimaces at the thought of needing to retell everything. It is all still so fresh that recalling their failure hurts and bothers Rias to no end. Yet, she must dismiss her own discomfort as Asia wholly deserves to know everything that had befallen her brother.

"Of course, Asia. Though, please," Rias ushers toward the chair placed beside Koneko's bed. "You should take a seat, Asia. You must be tired."

Asia nods and complies with her King's advice. Now that things have settled down and her adrenaline settling, Asia can feel this fatigue set in. Though she may not be exhausted physically. Mental-wise, it's another story. But, Asia pushes on. She will only continue to feel restless and uncontentious till she hears everything that has happened to her friends and brother.

Koneko and Gasper plop onto the bed and sit between Makasha's sides.

"A moment..." Everyone turns and sees Akeno eyeing Asia. Her expression is antsy. "Asia, where is Lucy?"

"Oh," Asia lowers her sights to her lap, her hands that are resting there clench together. "She wanted some time alone. Both of us learned of what happened from Lady Serafall, who chose to come over and deliver the news personally."

A fleeting look of annoyance crosses on Gremory's face when hearing this. Carrying anger towards Leviathan for intrusively taking the matter into her own hands. But, Rias quickly dissolve the anger. She can imagine how Lucy would take the news. And, Serafall, being a closer person to her than Rias, it makes more sense that she'd be the one to reveal what had happened.

'I honestly should thank her for that,' Rias inwardly breathes in relief. The prospect of being the one to bear telling the message of what had happened to Nawin to his sisters waned on Rias's shoulders since she awoke. Serafall truly saved her from grief by doing what she did.

"Nii-chan... She did not take the news well and left. I don't know where's she gone, but Lady Serafall is searching for her as we speak."

Akeno grows solemn. It is as she feared. She knows too well just how much Lucy cares for her brother. She looks up to him and always sees him as her personal hero. It was why Akeno remembered when Nawin told her he always tried to strive and set a good example for both Lucy and Asia.

To now recognize what Nawin had done. Devastating would not be a strong enough word to describe what Lucy must be feeling.

"I see..." Akeno softly mutters before turning her face away from everyone, focusing back on the view of the calm sky.

"With Lady Serafall involved, I am sure all will be all right, Asia," Rias comes in to comfort her friend. She notices talking about Lucy has damper Asia's mood and renewed the worry within her. "They are teacher and student. Lady Serafall will be best to calm her down." "Yes," Asia exhales before looking at Rias with a faint smile. "You are right, Buchou."

Taking a deep breath of her own, Rias perks when feeling a hand on her shoulder. She looks back and sees a supportive smile on Issei's face. That helps calm her heart, and she responds with a gracious smile of her own.

Returning to face Asia, Rias opens her mouth to begin retelling the event that ultimately led them to battle against Nawin in the Land of Ends.

Gremory leaves no single detail out and even lets Asia and the others openly know of her fruitless effort in trying to find Nawin early on before she went to Akeno for help.

Within herself, Rias endeavors to remain composed throughout the conversation. Simply hearing the words leaving her mouth is difficult as it makes her consider different steps she could've taken that could have yielded a different conclusion.

"Nawin was simply too powerful and outclassed all of us... I honestly am still figuring out how he managed to escape the binding spell Akeno had on him. He was entirely pinned on the ground. And if he did manage to escape, why was Riser there in his place? And how did he become affected by Gasper's sacred gear?"

"I've never seen him do that before," Issei admits.

Considering he had arrived later in the battle, Issei pays close attention to all of Rias's words. And in truth, he is left mostly stunned at just how Nawin succeeded in overpowering the group in such a dominant manner. And judging by some key parts in Rias's retelling, many were giving it their all in the battle.

"Actually," Asia speaks up, garnering the attention of all. "I'm cognizant of that ability. Onii-chan explained it to me one time when he saved me from a sneak attack by a stray. How he does it is that he switches place with an individual he has already branded with the Speeding Shadow God marker."

"W-wait, so," Yuuto stutters, his eyes widening in realization, "Nawin must've placed a seal somewhere on Riser's body during their hand-to-hand exchange!" "Then," Koneko inserts, "When he succeeded in lifting the pillars up for an instant with his mana, he switched spots with Riser."

"That's insane!" Xenovia shouts, "Senpai always had such a moveset?!" "I believe it is one of his recent techniques. He kept it a secret simply cause he had not mastered it yet. He said if it were used incorrectly, he could end up heavily hurting himself."

Asia bears a strained smile. "All of you must've had him in a tough position for him to resort to using that."

"Hurt himself how?" Koneko softly inquires. "If the technique isn't done correctly, it could end with Onii-chan crashing into the person or object he's trying to replace. And accounting the sheer instantaneous speed that the Speeding Shadow God is..." "Satans!" Rias gasps in horror. "That's beyond dangerous!"

"Putting himself and Riser at such a risky situation," Yuuto frowns at the thought, "I'm surprised he'd desire to pull such a perilous stunt. Though Riser would suffer the same injury, he can heal back effectively with his regeneration. But, for Nawin, that would have spelled the end for him in the bout."

"Senpai must have been more confident in his ability," Xenovia inserts. "I find it hard to accept he would pull such a reckless maneuver consider the stake." "Yeah," Issei agrees with the Knight, "That doesn't sound like him. Nawin may be reckless under certain situations, but when it comes to the battlefield. He is sharp."

"Well..." Rias speaks up, "All of us had witnessed just how much Nawin had grown. He is at a level that even I am not prudent of. So what both of you said, Issei and Xenovia, may not be far off. Anyway," Rias sighs in tiredness. Pinching the side of her thigh in hopes of staying alert, she then turns to Asia with a small smile of appreciation donning her face. "Thanks to your insight, Asia. We got that mystery cleared. It would have bothered me to no end considering at that stretch, victory for us was almost assured before Nawin countered with that maneuver."

Tapping her arms with her fingers, Xenovia averts her eyes to Hyoudou.

"It's your turn to fill us in on what happened, Issei. Now's the best time for it." "Yeah," Issei nods. "Guess now is a better time as any."

"A moment," Rias cuts in with a lift of her hand. "I did not get to ask this earlier. Where is Riser? He should be in this room too."

"He left before any of us came to," Yuuto answers. "The nurse told us the doctor tried to reason him to stay here and recuperate, but well... Riser was set to leave, so none of them can do much to stop him."

"I see. Sounds like Riser." Rias understands her childhood friend well. He probably chose to leave here so none can see him in a negative mindset. Like the rest of them, he will surely be taking the defeat harshly.

Pushing aside Riser for the moment, Rias turns to Issei with curiosity in her eyes.

"You haven't told them?" "Not yet. Xenovia was bugging me to; however, I wanted to wait till you were present for it, Rias." Gremory cannot help to smile at her lover's considerate nature.

"I see. Do begin then, Issei. Best not to keep poor Xenovia in suspense."

Soft chuckles leave the lips of Hyoudou before he turns to face the others. Now all eyes are on him.

A bittersweet smile makes its way on Issei's face when he recollects the moments that had come about in his battle with Nawin.

"I won't go into full detail and be quite blunt with this," Issei states.

Immediately, the group can affirm that asking Hyoudou to retell the battle is hard on him. None can blame him. The memory is no doubt fresh. And his failure haunts him still in front of his face. Accordingly, none of the members push an argument and simply stay silent, waiting for him to continue.

"Truthfully, Nawin was keeping up at my best in the beginning. Even on Boost Forty-Five, he still was holding his grounds." Issei spares a glance over to his cast arm. "When I pushed to Fifty, Nawin countered with the Draconic Mark."

"Sounds to me you two were evenly matched," Yuuto remarks. "Briefly," Issei corrects, "I was holding my ground well with Nawin at that moment. However, Nawin continued to only get stronger. Every time I created a gap between us in strength, he effortlessly lessened it."

"Then, he managed to get the upper hand and knocked me down, rendering me near unconscious. Honestly, I thought it was over there till...."

Rias bring her hand up to place it on Issei's back, offering him gentle strokes to comfort. Along with the others, she can see that he's striving to remain composed and not allow his emotions to take over.

Letting out a shaky exhale, Issei reopens his eyes, a small smile of reminiscence dons on his face.

"Before I could succumb to darkness, I remembered a specific memory involving Nawin." Issei lets out a hearty chuckle which helps to lighten up the mood in the room. Some members smile at this, respectfully listening to Issei pouring all these words from his heart.

"There I was again training to get stronger though this time I felt like I had hit a wall. Stuck under this daunting ceiling. Nawin came to visit and, of course, saw where my mindset was at clear as day. And like always," Issei can feel his eyes beginning to sting, and he forces back the tears. He has no desire to cry in front of everyone. "Nawin always lend his ears to me and listened without a complaint... Never once did he express disgruntlement. And when he's done listening, he'd have the correct words to respond that make things feel better."

"... He always does, doesn't he?" Xenovia softly whispers with a fond smile carving on her face.

"I say," Yuuto asserts, staring at his crossed arms with a nostalgic look in his eyes, "All of us are well familiar to that sentiment."

"When I caught a glimmer of Nawin's retreating form, it truly hit me to what will happen if I failed there. I'd lose him to Ophis. But, then, something inside me snapped, and I felt this torrent of power coursing through my body, pushing me awake."

Yuuto leans forward from the chair with a look of shock, quickly wearing his feature.

'D-Did he reach that level?!'

Rias is staring at Issei closely, sharing a look alike to her Knight as she waits for him to continue.

"This newfound power felt like it came from the depth of my soul, answering at my time of need. Finally, my desperation and determination managed to reach it. And before I can even think of it properly, I screamed out 'Balance Breaker' and donned an entirely new form."

All eyes in the room gawk at Hyoudou in shock. They all are knowledgeable of the power withholding to a Longinus's user and just how significant it is when one achieves Balance Breaker. A power that rivals that of Gods and may even surpass them.

However, this revelation promptly brews another major question within all of them.

If Issei had achieved Balance Breaker... How could he have possibly lost the bout against Nawin?

"I don't understand," Akeno speaks up. Her voice is sharper and more firm than before. She stares straight at Issei. "If you had achieved Balance Breaker, how could you have failed in stopping Nawin-kun?!"

"Akeno!" Rias snaps angrily toward her friend for the brash comments. She knows the defeat hurts Issei just as much as the rest of them. "Don—""It's ok, Rias," Issei softly cuts in, showing no offense or hurt by Akeno's comment. He can fully understand where she is coming from, and he isn't blind to the fact that many in the room are probably thinking the same thing.

"When I donned the Scale Mail, my chances of victory seemed assured," Issei admits, his mind replaying the battle vividly. "Nawin was having a difficult time and did manage to out clever me in ways, but I always counter with overpowering him in sheer strength and speed... For the first time in my life, I felt like I truly surpassed Nawin in power."

The last statement catches some by surprise. Many know it is not something Issei would say so impulsively claim as surpassing Nawin is one of his goals in life.

"What happened next?" Xenovia speaks out, anxious to hear more.

"We ended up in a standstill, and I tried hard to convince Nawin to stop going to Ophis, but... His mind was made up. I begged Ddraig to give me everything he had and was able to summon the Scale Mail again." "Wait," Yuuto jumps in, "You weren't wearing it during that moment?!" "No," Issei shakes his head, facing the Knight, "Nawin heavily damaged it with a modified version of his Demonic Lightning. Instead of it being the usual black electricity, it was crimson and much more powerful."

Asia holds her chin, her eyes staring hard on the white tile floor.

"That's certainly new from my Onii-chan. He's never told me of this technique," Asia admits.

"I was ready to put everything in my last Rotation. Nawin looked exhausted, so for a flicker of a moment, I thought I really had a chance to end this until...."

Everyone is surprised to see the look of anxiety suddenly bearing upon Hyoudou's face. A cold sweat forms on his forehead, dripping down between his eyes.

Blinking and returning to the present, Issei looks up and can feel Rias's hand on his back. A gesture which he greatly appreciates.

"Till Nawin muttered those words' Balance Breaker' and transformed to a different form."

Once again, the room grows quiet by this new revelation. All the members, stunned to now realize that the battle between Nawin and Issei was so fierce and unrelenting that it pushed not only one but both of them to achieve this paramount status that not many can claim they have.

'Both Longinus users achieving Balance Breaker together,' Rias stares at her lover. 'It's unheard of. Especially when there have been records of previous Longinus users who never could obtain such a legendary status in their entire lifespan. Their battle must have truly pushed them to the brink of their abilities.'

"W-What do you mean by a different form, Issei-kun?" Asia inquires after recomposing herself. She wishes to know everything about her brother's newfound power.

"Well," Issei tries to find the words to best describe what he saw. "My Balance Breaker allowed me to obtain a battle armor. However, Nawin's altered his appearance entirely. His hair grew longer, reaching up to his waist, and it was in the shade darker than usual, almost pitch black. His pupils were still red, but the sclera was entirely black, like an abyss. And, he wore a black cloak that moves in a flame-like manner, as if it had a mind of its own."

From the description alone, the group can perceive how dangerous that newfound form of Nawin's is. And presently, it is becoming apparent to them how the result turned out to be the way it ended.

"Shadow of Calamity," Issei utters the name, remembering it vividly when it left Makasha's mouth. "That's what Nawin called it before transforming."

Rias keeps a note of that name, intending to research it when she has the opportunity.

"Putting everything I had in it, I threw the Giant Rotation at Nawin... Looking back at it now, it was entirely a pointless effort. Nawin released a blast that was entirely black, like a wave of darkness. It caved through the Rotation and engulfed me. For a moment, I found myself in a world of abyss. Then, Scale Mail shattered under the relentless pressure, and I lost consciousness."

"... You fought valiantly, Issei-kun," Yuuto speaks up when seeing his friend staring at the bandaged arm, frustration evident in those brown orbs.

Issei looks up at the Knight. A hollow smile wears on his face.

"It doesn't matter how hard I fought, Yuuto... Especially in that battle. What mattered most was the end result, and I failed on that."

"You may have failed, Issei-kun," Asia inserts, drawing the eye of Hyoudou. "But have some comfort to acknowledge that you had given it your all. And I am confident that deep down, my Onii-chan will have greatly appreciated your effort."

Asia's heartfelt words manage to console Hyoudou. His smile now shows more life as he nods. "Yeah. I'll have to be more prepared the next time we meet." Issei looks out the window, staring into the distance.

"I ain't giving up on you, Nawin. Not ever."

Asia smile at those words, as do Rias and the others.

"Buchou..."

Rias turns by the sound of Gasper's quiet voice calling for her.

"Yes?" "Nii-chan... He never truly wanted to hurt us, did he?"

Rias blinks, taken aback by the comment.

Gasper stares at his hands for a moment before looking up at his friends.

"I never sensed killing intent from him. He did not truly hurt any of us besides Riser, who could always heal himself back. During the whole bout, I felt like he was... Holding back." "We know what Nii-chan is capable of," Koneko speaks, "And our fight with him was not him at his best."

Yuuto silently nods at his friend's word, reopening his eyes.

"You two are right. I also did not miss the lack of shadow weapons utilized throughout the battle. He discarded the Twisted Etcher fairly early on." "Same thing can be said with you, Issei?" Xenovia turns to Hyoudou." "Well, I'm still here and having felt just how powerful his balance breaker was. Nawin could have done much worse than just this," Issei glances over to his cast arm.

"Even though he's been influenced by Ophis, Nawin-kun is still himself," Akeno looks down at the bracelet, tracing her finger on the gem. "Recall how he handled Koneko and Gasper? There was nothing but love in his action."

None dispute Himejima's words, coinciding with her completely.

"Yes," Rias softly speaks, "Nawin indeed did not wish to harm us. I know that if he had it his way, he'd wish to have left without a battle."

"It just makes it more frustrating," Xenovia squeezes her arms firmly, her eyes burning with steady hate. "To know that it was because of Ophis's doing that Senpai had forced to battle us."

"For what's it worth," Asia speaks up, drawing the other's attention.

They regard the expression of relief bearing upon the blonde's face. "It soothes my heart to know that my Onii-chan has not truly changed. He sounds still much like himself. It truly sickens me to learn what Ophis has done to him, but it brings me relief that she has not done something to have changed him entirely. I whole-heartedly believe now that when the time is right, he will come to his senses."

"All of us hope for that too, Asia," Rias comments, smiling at Makasha's thoughtful words.

Rias slowly blinks when her vision begins to blur. Her eyelids are becoming noticeably heavy. It reminds her that she's running on her last sliver of energy. If she does not wrap this up soon, her body will simply put her to sleep itself.

"Ok, everyone," Rias raises her voice to draw everyone's attention. They know to listen closely, judging by that tone.

"I'm sorry, but I am close to passing out, so I want to get this out before I return to my room," Rias rubs the bridge of her nose, pinching it faintly with her nails to keep herself awake. Finally, she opens her eyes to look at her friends.

"Reason behind why I left so abruptly with my brother is because there was an assembly held by the Council. Everyone was there. Civilian Clans, Royals, and the Old Councils. The motivation for this particular assembly is to discuss about Nawin's departure."

"What?!" Xenovia yells. Anger surges in her eyes. "How can that be?! It has barely been a day, and word has already gotten out of this?!"

"Exactly," Akeno joins in, her eyes flashing in yellow "How could they have possibly received word of this?! You reassured us that Sirzech promised to keep all of this under wraps!"

"And he did, Akeno," Rias calmly replies. "My Brother was not the reason for this to have come out. When I heard of this, trust me when I say I planned to learn how exactly it got out." "And I'm going to make a wager," Yuuto's features grow sharp. "That a member of the Old Council was the one to come upon this information?" "Yes."

The atmosphere in the room instantly shifts to tense with the mention of the Old Council.

"Chiyo was the person. I won't go too much detail on her cause in truth; I know not much about the Old Councils as individuals," Rias admits. "How she found out about Nawin's desertion...." Rias pauses and bites the bottom of her lip. She's still very frustrated regarding the matter, and it only makes it worse by how Chiyo uncovered it.

"Chiyo spoke that she was on her ritual afternoon stroll that took her to Lumos Tower. From there, she caught sight of Nawin, Akame, and Misako hastily leaving over the wall."

"A-An afternoon stroll?!" Xenovia cracks a quivering smile, her wide eyes in disbelief by what she just heard. "A-Are you actually serious, Rias?!" "She's lying!" Koneko angrily inserts.

Rias stare at all the furious and skeptical look on her friend's faces. It's clear none buys into Chiyo's account. And she cannot blame them for that.

"I know it seems coincidental," "Too coincidental," Akeno growls out. "But, understand that my Brother and Grayfia were present in that room. And both sensed no deception in Chiyo's claim," Rias states.

That has everyone in the room pause. The skepticism brewing on their faces lowers, though still is present with some.

"... What do you believe, Buchou?" Yuuto asks after gathering his thoughts.

Rias heaves out a long sigh, rubbing her brows.

"Like all of you, I want to call Chiyo out for falseness, but I too sensed no underline lie in her tone when she spoke of her finding. Therefore, regrettably, her claims hold true. It is unfortunate for us that she happened to be visiting Lumos Tower at the exact time as Nawin planned his leave."

"So, what does that mean?" Issei asks, "Is Nawin officially been branded as a traitor?"

"My goal when attending that assembly is to do whatever it takes to prevent unfair punishment from befalling on Nawin. And to stop anyone in that room that holds an agenda against Nawin to draw out their cards, utilizing this opportunity to take advantage against him," Rias notifies before glancing back to her lover. "Preventing him from being branded a traitor is undoable, Issei. No matter the explanation, Nawin has deserted Vesarima. There's no way else to look at it."

"I see," Issei whispers, his brows furrowing in frustration.

"T-Then," Gasper speaks up, "Did you at least manage to do something to help Nii-chan's case, Buchou?" "I did," Rias nods with a bright smile. "My brother and I were successful in convincing the council to halt from placing Nawin on the bounty and revoked his bond" "Really?!" Yuuto leans forward, a grin of relief spread across his face. "That's fantastic, Buchou! In truth, that was what I was most worried about." "So was I," Rias admits. "Some tried to argue, desiring him to be put on it, but Nawin's past action has carried much and made an impact in a lot of the councils' hearts, so many were adamant on placing him on the book."

"Wait," Xenovia raises her arm to draw attention, "I thought Senpai is already in the bounty book?" "Yeah," Issei nods, equally confused as the Knight. "Can you elaborate to us, Rias?"

Gremory shoots a glance at Yuuto, who nods and flick his index finger.

A hefty brown book appears above the Knight and falls into his hand. Yuuto flips the book open then swiftly flicks through the page until it stops on a certain one.

"Here, Xenovia," Yuuto passes the book to his lover's hands. He leans to her side to look at the context with her.

Xenovia gives the slightest wince when viewing the photo of Nawin on the page. Her heart aches by seeing those brown eyes staring back at her.

"With Nawin-kun's accomplishments and reputation," Yuuto places his index finger on the page, drawing Xenovia's eyes. "He fetches a hefty amount with the bounty hunters." "Five Hundred Thousand Gold," Xenovia gasps. "But," Yuuto moves his finger up and passes the photo to the title above it. "Alliance with Vesarima and House of Gremory."

"That was what I was striving arduously to preserve," Rias states. "Nawin may be worth much, but those titles will keep many individuals away from him. Not only is he an S-class adversary. He also has the protection of Vesarima and Gremory on his side. No sane bounty hunters would try to target Nawin with all of that when there are criminals out there fetching higher price and is an outcast due to their crimes."

"If Buchou had failed to prevent those titles to remain," Yuuto grimaces at even the thought. "It will be similar to Nawin-kun being placed on the bounty officially. He will be marked as a criminal, and no doubt his bounty will double or tripled depending on how the council sees fit. With the rise of his stock and his protection from Vesarima and Gremory revoked. Bounty hunters all around the world will be on the hunt for him. And there are some out there who are much stronger than even Nawin-kun."

"Nii-chan's life would be in constant danger," Asia holds her hands together, pressing them close to her chest. She breathes a sigh of relief before looking towards Rias. "Thank you, Buchou. I did not know this could have turned into such a great issue." "Yeah," Issei also looks relieved and drops onto the pillow, "I thought the only thing we'd had to be concerned about is his reputation here. So it's a big weight off our chests to know that there won't be any powerful bounty hunters out there that will be targeting Nawin's back."

"Believing there won't be a hunter out there that'll still wish to partake in collecting the bounty on Nawin-kun is a bit too naive, Issei-kun," Yuuto remarks. "But with Buchou's victory, it will certainly eliminate more possibility of them."

"Is there more, Buchou?" Koneko urges to hear the rest. She won't be able to relax till she knows everything.

"To make up for our failure, my brother has assigned us a special mission. Myself, Sona, Riser, and all our group will personally see to capture Nawin and his peerage. We shall bring them back to Vesarima so they can face judgment on their desertion."

This news brings a smile across many of the member's faces.

"That's great!" Xenovia joyfully exclaims, "So capturing Senpai will be exclusive to us along with Sona and Riser!"

Yuuto gives out a hearty chuckle, "Lord Sirzech is a crafty one to pull that rug under the council's feet. None can really argue against that when he decided to add Sona and Riser into the mix." "Indeed," Rias nods, rubbing her brows, "But, we must not be blind by how fragile this victory is."

"W-What do you mean, Buchou?" Gasper asks, growing nervous.

Apprehension bears on Gremory's tired face before she opens her mouth. "Many within the council and civilians shall view Nawin as a victim in this whole ordeal. That will play a big favor to our cause in protecting Nawin and safely bring him back home one day. Yet, that opinion can acutely shift side-ways if Nawin and his group were to ever do or get involved in something that'll put Vesarima in jeopardy or harm it in some ways."

"Accounting that Khaos Brigade not long ago launched an invasion on Vesarima," Akeno scowls. "The chance of Ophis having Nawin-kun do something villainous for her own gain is highly possible."

"So if that happened," Koneko grasps her shirt, concern bearing over her face, "Nii-chan could end up in the bounty book as a criminal!"

"That's... Not good," Xenovia mutters, looking deflated now, fully understanding the rigorous position they are in. "We simply have to accept that," Yuuto asserts. "Our best hope is that we do find Nawin before he has the chance to do something that will be unresolvable."

"All right, everyone," Issei speaks up. "Let's stop our conversation here and save it for tomorrow. Rias needs her rest."

Everyone turns and finally takes notice of Rias's state. She's barely holding on to stay awake. Her eyelids are blinking slowly and repeatedly, trying hard to remain open. Her body is swaying faintly to the sides. Her eyes, now missing that sharpness and light in them.

"I'll take her to her room," Issei informs as he gently pushes Rias to the bed for her to lie down.

The instant her back touches the soft surface, Rias closes her eyes, and they remain shut.

"A moment, Issei-kun," Asia speaks up as she stands up from the chair and makes her way toward the bed. "I apologize for not doing this earlier. I was so concentrated on Onii-chan."

Staring at the cast for a moment, Asia gently presses her palms on it then begins the healing process. Green mana emits from her hands and surrounds Hyoudou's arm.

"Don't worry about it," Issei softly reassures the girl.

Hyoudou suddenly flinches and bites down the grunts trying to escape his throat. He can feel his bones moving in the arm, rearranging and fixing themselves.

Asia bears a frown at the severity of the injury. It is no surprise to her now why the doctors here would be struggling with it. It would take a full-scale surgery procedure to fix this.

"It was my own doing," Issei notices the look on Makasha's face. "I damaged it when putting all I had in the Giant Rotation."

Responding with a silent nod, Asia returns to concentrate on healing. It takes a full minute till she feels all the bones have settled to their organic place.

"That should do it," Asia retracts her hands and looks at Issei. "Has the pain left?" "Yeah," Issei grins, "It's entirely gone. Thanks, Asia." "No problem. Just please be careful in the future, Issei-kun." "I will."

Hopping out of bed, Issei forcibly pulls the case off his arm and sets it on a counter. He promptly scoops the now sleeping Rias onto his arms and turns around.

"I'll stay with her till she's awake."

"Of course," Yuuto smiles at his friend, "Don't concern yourself about us, Issei. You just focus on Buchou. There's not much for us to do till tomorrow when we are all discharged." "Take care of Buchou," Koneko states while Gasper nods.

"Thanks, guys."

Holding Rias close to his chest, Issei makes his way towards the door. Yuuto quickly stands up from the chair and moves to open the door for the pair.

"Thanks, Yuuto" "Mhm-hmm."

Standing by the doorway, Issei pauses for a moment before throwing a glance back to the room.

"Asia," "Yes?" "I just want to say welcome back."

Asia blinks in surprise before donning a bright smile.

"I'm happy to be back."

Smiling at the blonde, Issei turns around and finally leaves the room with Rias in his arms.

Softly sliding the door shut, Yuuto looks out the window and sees the sun already settling on the horizon. The night is approaching.

Yuuto shifts his gaze when noticing movement by the corner of his eyes.

"Akeno-senpai?"

Everyone turns to see Himejima pushing herself off the bed to stand. She flicks her fingers and gets rid of the gown, replacing them with a casual outfit.

"I need some time to myself to gather my thoughts," Akeno speaks out. "I'll be having dinner elsewhere, so please don't wait on me."

Many stare at Himejima with concern. Yet, they have no words to offer to help her. All of them know the recent event with Nawin has hit her the hardest.

"Akeno-onee-chan."

Himejima comes to an abrupt halt at the center of the room. Her throat tightens by the fact Asia still addresses her under that term. After everything she has done, she does not deserve to be called by that affectionate title.

Breathing shakily through her nose, Akeno peers back to look at the blonde.

Asia wears a warm smile that's full of love and support.

"Please know that I bear no resentment at you for anything you had done. You've made mistakes, and I will not gloss over the fact some of them were severe. Yet, I whole-heartedly believe that you did it out of love for my Onii-chan. Not from a place of maliciousness."

A sense of relief blossoms in Akeno's heavy heart. Her lip trembles and her eyes turn glossy, threatening to spill the tears. Unable to stare at Asia and that smile of hers without risking breaking down, Akeno looks ahead. She wishes no more to cry here.

Biting the bottom of her lip, Akeno nods her head as she clenches her hands to stop them from shaking.

"Thank y-you, Asia. I'm comforted to hear that."

Flicking her fingers, Akeno summons the teleportation that swiftly whisks her away in a blinding light.

"... Will she be ok?" Xenovia breaks the silence with a question, staring at the spot where Himejima stood. Concern expresses clear on her face.

"The best thing we can do for her this moment is to provide her space," Asia softly answers. "Right now, she is very much loss on what to do next." She looks up at her friends. "I believe we all can relate with that to some degree..."

Gently setting Rias on the bed and guiding her head to rest comfortably on the pillow, Issei steps back and takes a moment to look at his lover.

He cannot suppress the smile arising from his face at the sight of Rias sleeping. She never fails to look adorable and innocent in her sleep. It is one of the sporadic moments Issei ever gets to see her so off-guard and at ease.

Right now, Rias is no devil or a princess of one of the wealthiest and most powerful clans in the underworld. Instead, she looks as normal as a girl her age can be.

Leaning down, Issei brings a hand over to brush the locks from Rias's forehead before planting a soft kiss there. The gesture brings out a faint smile to Gremory's face, which has Issei bears his own smile.

Moving away from the bed, Issei makes himself comfortable on the chair station next to it. He rather Rias have the bed to herself than him making it cramped for her by joining in.

Releasing a sigh, Issei leans back on the chair and stare at the ceiling mindlessly for a moment. Next, he shuts his eyes and starts to concentrate.

'Ddraig?'

The silence continues even after waiting a full minute. Issei frowns lightly at the absence of his companion. His heart aches in worry and frustration.

Since Hyoudou unlocked Balance Breaker, Ddraig has not made himself known.

'... Speak to me, buddy. Anything. Just to let me know you are all right.'

The worry in Hyoudou only develops worse by the continuous silence on the other end.

Suddenly, a surge of energy burst from Issei's heart. His eyes snap wide open in shock by the intense sensation coursing through his body. The iris in his eyes glows brightly in emerald for just a moment till it reverts to its normal brown.

A big grin breaks out from Hyoudou's face.

"You idiot... Getting me all worried like that," Issei whispers, placing a hand on the center of his chest. His grin shifts to a softer smile of comfort.

Elsewhere

A pair of black wings flap hastily and soundly, assisting Serafall to soar through the cold night at a rapid pace. She blasts through the dark clouds as her bright, pink color eyes scour ahead at the deserted landscape.

Anxiety brewing on her features.

Mountains, rocks, and dry hills are all that greet the Satan's gaze. It is one of the many isolated and uninhabitable lands that dwell within the underworld.

'Where is she?!"

Serafall looks to the north, west, south, then lastly, east. Trying to perceive any signs of her student. Yet, only the silence of the night coldly welcomes her.

Then, a thunderous explosion roars from behind Leviathan that instantly draws her attention. Swiftly turning her whole body around, Serafall gazes upon the enormous blue blast plaguing the sky.

The explosion is vibrant and big enough to momentarily blind the whole land, plunging the dark night to near daylight at a glance.

Flapping her wings, Serafall leans her body forward and rushes towards the source without a moment of thought.

Emerging from the cloud of smoke, Serafall opens her eyes and sees a horde of the undead surrounding Lucy on all sides. At that moment, she senses the sinister aura coming from the land below. It becomes clear now why this particular area is left so desolated.

It once must've acted as one of the battlegrounds during the Great War age. Like any war, many casualties befallen during those grueling times, and many warriors, young and old, died with regret in their hearts. Regret that, in the end, leaves their spirits tied to this place. And in turn, it plunges this very land into a cursed place.

Serafall slowly descends while wordlessly observing Lucy standing there, entirely calm under her predicament.

Snapping her arms to the sides, Lucy unleashes a wave of flames around her that wash over the horde, incinerating them into ashes within seconds.

Lucy's glowing blue eyes snap to below in time to see a hand exploding from the earth, latching onto her ankle. Its skin is decaying green, rotting in some parts that the bones from within come out visible.

Scowling in disgust, Lucy draws her right arm down just as the undead pop its head from the ground. The creature is promptly hit with a blast of flames that erase its existence while decimating the earth below.

Slowly retreating her wings, Serafall brings her right feet down first toward the ground. The moment it touches the earth, the entirety of the land momentarily shifts to a shade of blue hue.

The dry, gray color earth becomes ice-blue. And Lucy's fire that is running rampant around portions of the land is instantly relinquished under the cold.

The undead that is desperately trying to escape out from the earth have all but become frozen in place, their decay body encased within a block of hissing ice.

The sudden sight of the land before her turning to ice has Lucy snap out of her frenzy. She does not need to turn around to know who's responsible for this.

"Stop, Lucy," Serafall calmly speaks up when noticing her student bending her knees, ready to catapult herself to the air and move elsewhere.

Lucy pauses, choosing rather to listen or ignore Leviathan's word. Ultimately, she returns to standing straight and in place. Though favors not to face her teacher.

"... I told you to leave me alone," "Hence you can be left to your own to do this? Mindlessly slaughtering undead till you drop to exhaustion?" Serafall sharply retort.

Inside her chest, Serafall's heart aches by the hollow tone in Lucy's voice.

Silence follows for a moment. The cold wind passes by the pair, whistling in the air.

"... Take me to the Land of Ends," Lucy stoically requests.

"And what precisely will you do if I were to take you there?" Serafall asks with narrow eyes. "Your brother no longer even exists in this dimension, Lucy."

"Then what should I be doing now?!" Lucy screeches out to the night.

Blue flames erupt into existence and encompass Makasha, answering to her frustration and rage.

"H-He's gone. My big brother has left m-me."

The calm expression wearing over Serafall's face cracks and shatters when she sees droplets falling by Lucy's feet. The sound of her sobs is apparent in the dead of night.

"I-I know Ophis has done something to him! I knew that the mark on his neck was going to one day be a big problem! B-But I..." Lucy stares at her shaking hands, her glossy eyes flickering in frustration and hopelessness. "I-I thought it would all be o-ok because my big brother is the strongest person I know. H-He would always be there. Unbreakable and unwavering. Like a beacon of life. B-But now he's, h-he's—"

Lucy stops when a hand rests on top of her head. She gazes back, her glossy eyes wide in surprise.

"Your brother is indeed mighty and special," Serafall softly asserts. "And it is unfortunate that he has caught the attention of Ophis... I understand it's frustrating to you that you are unable to do anything now, Lucy. So," Serafall slides her hand down to the back of Lucy's head and pulls her face into her chest. "As much as I wish I could do it for you, Lucy, I am powerless to bring your bother back to you. However, there is something I can and will do for you. And that is to prepare you for the time when you do come to face your brother or other adversaries in Ophis's group."

Serafall brings her hand up and wipes the tears from Lucy's face, staring at her. Those pink orbs radiate with love and resolution.

"I will do everything within my power to help you become even stronger, Lucy. From here on out, I shall dedicate more of my time and focus on you and your growth. Following what befell your brother, I shall not permit you to suffer a similar fate. That be at the hands of the Akumi or Khaos Brigade."

Even uttering out those last words garners this surge of rage within Leviathan's heart. She will never allow any of them to lay a hand on Lucy. And if they perform and bring harm upon her student, Serafall is well prepared to plunge the entirety of the underworld into the ice age in retaliation.

"When it is time that you face your brother, I will make certain for your sake that you are in a level to bring him home and free him from Ophis's grasp."

A gentle smile bears on Serafall's face while she softly strokes Lucy's smooth hair before resting a hand on her cheek. "The moment I had accepted you as my student, Lucy. You became my priority, and it is my responsibility to lead and guide you to survive and strive in this harsh world. I'll always be there by your side till the day I am certain you are ready to tackle any obstacles by yourself."

Sobs escape from Makasha's quivering mouth as newfound tears form and trickle down her eyes. Rather than being one of frustration or sadness, the tears now are in relief and solace.

At this moment, Lucy truly feels not so painfully alone in this. Serafall will be there and assist her through hardship and this painful reality that is now absent of her brother.

"I'll be there with you," Serafall reaffirms. "At every step of the way, Lucy. Do not fret and be defeated at the thought of your future without your brother. Instead, strive and believe in a future where you will bring him home."

Lifting her arms and wrapping them around Leviathan, Lucy nods and allows herself to cry her heart out. Releasing the tears that are still stored within her.

"I-I want to become strong, teacher. S-So I can b-bring my brother back," "And I shall do whatever I possibly can to help you, Lucy. Never will I leave you alone in this path. Remember that."

Kuoh

"Thank you, Miss."

The waitress submits a beaming smile to Himejima before collecting the check and the empty plate before leaving to the kitchen to deliver the dirty dishes to be cleaned.

The smile on Himejima's face immediately withdraws the moment the waitress departs from the table. Keeping it up for even a few seconds is a tiresome task for her.

Averting her eyes to the window, Akeno catches a moment to gaze upon the bright, neon lights shining through the glass, created by the lively nightlife in Kuoh Center. Restaurants, bars, shop stands, and malls. All of them awake in the night. Some that only open exclusively in the night are wide awake, ready to work, and take in customers till midnight.

The sight is a norm one with crowds of people gathering and moving through the streets. That be the elderly, adults, or teenagers. Some are either alone, with friends, or with family. All of them are here for their own variety of reasons.

Akeno gives out the faintest wince on her features when she catches sight of a couple strolling past the restaurant. Both look to be the same age as her. Smiling and laughing together, their hands firmly clasp at each other, their body leaning close. All the clear signs that they are a happy couple and still new into the relationship.

There's an air of innocence around them that people with experience in a relationship would notice.

Feeling a throb in her heart, Akeno tears her gaze away from the couple by the window. Then, grasping the glass of half-empty water, Akeno brings it to her lip and drinks it down till it's empty.

Setting the glass down, Himejima slides to the edge of the couch and stands up. Her eyes shift to the left to discover more couples occupying the tables. Happily chatting with each other. The sight makes Akeno sick with frustration and regret.

Looking ahead, Akeno makes quick toward the exit, keeping her eyes fixed on the door and nothing else.

Leaving the restaurant and now standing on the sidewalk, Akeno breathes a sigh of relief. The tenseness weighing on her shoulders evaporates, and the suffocating feeling she had in the building dies down.

Akeno finds her eyes moving back to the bracelet and focuses on the gem embedded in the center. It still remains the color onyx. Witnessing the stone remaining unchanged helps brew some sense of relief within Himejima's heart.

'What should I be doing now?

Akeno finds herself asking as she begins to walk, wandering through the street, blending in with the crowd. Her desire to return to the hospital is empty. She still holds no wish to see her friends at the moment, aspiring to remain alone. Yet, even when she was alone eating, her mind continued to provoke blankness.

It's been a long time since Akeno has felt this empty and lost. Not since that day, when she lost everything in a single night. Her home, her family, everything.

There is a part of Akeno that desires to return to the Land of Ends. To arrive there and start screaming out into the air for Nawin. Begging him to appear before her and reconsider his decision. Yet, in her heart, Akeno knows well the attempt would be utterly fruitless.

The moment Nawin stepped foot in Dragath, it was all over.

"... Such a long face you bear, Akeno-san."

Himejima stops dead in her track by a voice calling her name. Her heart skips a beat at that voice. It sounds awfully familiar.

Turning toward the source, Akeno feels her mouth drop, and her eyes stretch wide, gawking at the person leaning by a food-stand serving takoyaki.

"Miraya..."

Akeno stares in speechlessness at the woman. Not foreseeing meeting her in a place like this. For all she knew, Miraya had up and disappeared somewhere after what Nawin had left.

Uncrossing her arms, a bag containing a box of takoyaki hanging in her left hand, Miraya strolls toward Akeno. A calm smile carries upon her features.

Only when Miraya stop in front of her does Akeno shake out of her shock.

Akeno's body tenses when meeting her gaze with Miraya. Their last interaction with one another was a far cry from a good term.

"Miraya..." Akeno starts with rigidness in her tone, "What are you doing here?" "Just fetching some snacks," Miraya lifts her arm up, shaking the bag around.

"You looks quite distressed, Akeno-san," Miraya returns the bag by her side, tilting her head. "Why is that?" "..." Akeno does not offer a straightaway reply. Her mind is in shambles under this predicament.

In truth, somewhere in her mind, Akeno was reasonably confident that Nawin had taken Miraya with him when he chose to leave for Khaos Brigade. It's difficult to imagine Nawin getting Miraya involved in the supernatural world, considering the danger it would place on her well-being. Yet, it is near impossible to expect he'd just up and leave her after what had happened between the two of them.

Now Akeno faces a challenge over if she should mention Nawin to Miraya. She holds no knowledge of just how aware Miraya is regarding Nawin's situation. If she even knows of the supernatural world and that Nawin is a devil.

"Come."

Akeno blinks and looks up to see Miraya turning around, gesturing her to follow. "It is clear you need someone to talk with. Let's go somewhere quieter." She points ahead with a bright grin adorning her face. "I know of a great cafe near here that serves gelatos that is to die for!"

"You... Why are you being so friendly with me?" Akeno finds herself asking the human. "After what I tried to do to you."

"I'm not one to hold grudges so easily. Your distaste for me is very apparent, Akeno-san. However, there's also something I desire to discuss with you about." "Distaste is too strong of a word," Akeno utters, confliction bear upon her features.

Miraya retains that smile then, once again, gestures Himejima to follow. This time, the latter does. The pair silently travel through the crowd together.

It does not take long till the girls' stroll takes them to a small, innocent-looking cafe set near the end of the street.

When entering the building, they quickly spot no lines in front of the counter, gracing them with the convenience of swiftly giving their orders without needing to wait.

The place is relatively packed though not overbearingly so, as there's still a handful of tables left unoccupied.

Akeno's lip twitches, threatening to pull a frown over the number of couples they are passing by to reach their table. Although she should have seen this coming. The bright, light-hearted decoration within the cafe very much appeals to a younger crowd. It is a perfect and ideal setting to bring your significant other.

Taking their seat on the white, clean chairs, Miraya and Akeno do not have to wait long till their order arrives.

Staring at her selected cup of strawberry gelato for a second, Akeno peers at her surroundings and notice that Miraya has set them rather far from other people. Their table is placed furthest from the serving stand, near the back of the cafe.

Clearly, a table reserve for a more intimate conversation.

"They really do make the best chocolate gelato in Kuoh!"

Akeno turns at the sound of a squeal across from her and sees Miraya taking a second spoonful of chocolate dessert to her mouth. She is beaming by its taste.

Seeing how much she's enjoying it, Akeno picks up the plastic spoon and scoops a spoonful of strawberry gelato on it before bringing it to her mouth.

"... This is delicious," Akeno softly remarks after having the flavor settle on her tongue. Then, she quickly goes for a second spoon.

"Isn't it?" Miraya lets out a light chuckle. "I've heard the owner boast to a customer that nearly all their ingredients came from Italy. It is why they are so delicious."

For few moments, the pair simply enjoy their desserts in silence. The air surrounding them still holds this faint tenseness in them, but it's much less so than Akeno would've expected after what had happened in the past between them.

Sneaking a gaze across, Akeno senses no animosity coming from Culdos. Not in the slightest. And that stirs some regret within her regarding her past actions.

Himejima shall never forget that furious expression worn on Nawin's face after he pulled her inside the house, glaring at her with such disappointment and fury in his eyes.

"So," Akeno blinks and looks up to see Miraya focus on her. "What has happened to have you be like this, Akeno-san? You look much like a lost soul out there."

Biting her lip, Akeno averts her focus down to her gelato. Miraya's question is not one she can answer with truthfulness. Though her feelings for Culdos are mixed at best, Akeno will still keep protecting Nawin's wishes to have Miraya be oblivious to the supernatural world.

"... Where have you been, Miraya-san?" Akeno counters with her own question. There's some force in her tone.

With her mind more settled, Himejima remembers now that during Rias's search for Nawin, she discovered that Miraya had disappeared the same time as him. Furthermore, Rias believed that Miraya may have even met Sayomi before all of them left Gray Lotus.

Recollecting that, Akeno begins to grow some suspicion within herself. She stares at Miraya with extra sharpness in her gaze.

'Why would she be here in Kuoh? Rias claimed she left with Nawin-kun. It would be believable to assume she'd be with him in Dragath than here. Nawin-kun would never simply have left her here without saying a word.'

"You aren't going to throw a hand at me now, are you?" Miraya teasingly asks. She sees those violet orbs glaring at her now.

The jest does nothing to ease this uneasiness in Akeno. Instead, it only serves to brew her suspicion.

"No. Though please do answer my question." "Sure. I was with Nawin for the most part. He was left in worse shape after the breakup." "And?" "Why must I elaborate further? The rest is a private matter between him and myself."

Anger spark within Himejima. She cannot help but feel there's a mischievous insinuation underlining Miraya's tone.

"When it comes to Nawin-kun, it is my business." "You seem to have forgotten that you two are no longer an item, Akeno-san. So it is best you alter that mindset."

Himejima lowers her head, the front bangs waver over her eyes, concealing those electric yellow orbs sparking to life.

There it is again. Those particular words speaking from that mouth. Akeno does not know or understand why but when listening to Miraya criticizing her over her relationship with Nawin. It bothers her much, bothers her to the core.

Though it may sound like it is coming from a reverent place, Akeno cannot help but feel as if Miraya is secretly taunting her over her blunders. Is it her insecurity influencing this? Blinding her to recognize the truth. Or is Miraya's honesty genuine and not some farce ploy?

"... You should've stayed dead."

"Heh... Haha... Ahahaha!"

Akeno looks up in shock at the laughter coming from Miraya. She is utterly bellowing, her head craning upward to the ceiling. And, that laugh sounds menacing and chilling, almost like it's emanating from an entirely different person.

"Oh, Akeno Himejima," Miraya slowly lowers her head to look ahead. A dark smirk spread across her face. "You never cease to aggravate me."

Sensing something is amiss, Akeno examines her surroundings to finally notice the people within the cafe. All of them are frozen in place. It's as if reality for them has come to an abrupt halt, trapping them in time.

Shooting her sight towards the window, Akeno also perceives essences of mana radiating from outside, and it circles the whole building, indicating a barrier has been placed upon it.

Now the cafe's existence is effectively cut out of the real world.

"Best keep your eyes ahead."

That sharp and cold voice causes the back of Akeno's hair to curl up.

Gulping down a lump building in her throat, Akeno slowly shifts her eyes forward. Her blood goes cold at the sight of Sayomi Dracul sitting across from her.

That intense, menacing smirk adorning the Pureblood's pale face is enough to make Himejima's heart skip a beat, fear ensnaring it.

"Y-You," Akeno chokes out, her throat tightening and her voice wavers. "You disguised as Miraya?!"

Leaning back on the chair and crossing her arms under her breasts, Sayomi holds her eyes steady on Himejima. "Meeting me will only result in you cowering away and fleeing."

Akeno soundlessly grits her teeth over the fact the Pureblood views her in such weak light. Worse, she cannot confidently retort without looking childish and pathetic. Her claim would hold no ground. Akeno is well aware that when it comes to strength. She and Sayomi are realms apart.

"Where is Miraya?"

"Oh," Sayomi raises her brow. Amusement is blatantly clear on her features. "Now you care for the girl? Not a second ago, you wished death on her."

Akeno visibly flinches and steers her head to the side, hiding the look of regret in her eyes. She knew what she said was horrible and regretted it immediately after speaking it.

Even taking to account her feelings towards Miraya are complex at best, she would never honestly wish death upon her.

'You sure about that?!'

Akeno's eyes widen at the image of Makeno appearing before her face. That sinister, frightening grin wears so wide on that ghostly pale face. Akeno jerks back lightly, a spark of fear clouding over her expression for an instant.

"Huh," Sayomi tilts her head under notice, "You still have yet to tame and master your Nephilim side. An indictment and negligence on Azazel and that father of yours part."

Akeno snaps her sight ahead, shocked by the mention of her father. Yet, what's most surprising for her is the tone Sayomi uses when addressing her father. There's some bitterness behind it, indicating that the two may have been familiar with each other.

Feeling Makeno's presence subsiding, Akeno grows more at ease. Her shoulders loosen its tenseness, and her mind free of that murkiness.

"You talked as if you know him," "You really have cut yourself from your past, haven't you?" Sayomi calmly asserts, "Always terrified to face it, yet you still grasp onto it in some manner."

A scowl swiftly earns its way upon Himejima's face. "You understand nothing about me! Don't speak as if you know everything!" "I know plenty," Sayomi sharply retorts. "And it's an insult to conceive that you are the offspring of Shuri. You may have adopted her kindness, but you lack her wisdom. Your sister took more after her than you."

"Ugh!"

Akeno's eyes instantly change to electric yellow. The atmosphere within the room shifts and becomes dense to the point of suffocation. Many of the glass cups littering on tables suddenly crack then shatter under the pressure.

Akeno swiftly stands up and slams her hands on the table. The cups of gelato go flinging to the sides, crashing onto the floor.

Rage and hatred boiling behind her yellow orbs, Akeno glares ahead at the Pureblood.

"Yo—""Sit down," Sayomi commands, her blood-red orbs gleaming. Not a second later, Akeno feels her body tenses then sits itself back on the chair.

The loss of control over her own body frightens Akeno to the point her anger is swiftly forgotten. With her eyes returning to their normal violet shade, she looks at the Pureblood in silence.

The glow on Sayomi's eyes slowly fades and dims till it returns to its normal state. "Desperately attempting to run away from your past, yet a single mention of it and you lose control. It is astounding your relationship with Nawin lasted as long as it did. Reveals just how much he loved you," Sayomi frowns. "Still, you managed to push him to his limit."

Akeno drops her eyes to the table. Sadness and regret swell within those violet orbs.

"... Just what do you want from me?" Himejima whispers, wishing to be left alone.

"I am here to return a favor for a certain someone."

Akeno returns up to the Pureblood. Perplex by her response.

"I'll make it clear now if you have not already got it through that thick head of yours," Sayomi sharpens her expression "I do not like you, Akeno Himejima. You are a girl who merely lucked her way into Nawin's heart. All because of that face of yours."

"W-What do you mean?" Akeno stutters out.

Sayomi lifts her right hand up and traces the locks falling over her face back. Her eyes center up to observe the plain white ceiling.

"Guess I'll entertain you with that answer since you won't be getting from the other party any time soon... Not like she'd fret much over it."

"Though, first," Sayomi locks eyes with Akeno, "Tell me, Himejima, just how much do you recollect regarding your sister?"

"...." For a moment, Akeno persists in remaining silent. Part of her does not wish to even speak of that woman. But, the curiosity within her grows more by the second to hear what Sayomi has to say. Akeno knows it's something important. And it could involve Nawin in some form.

Bringing her arms up to the table, hands clenching together, Akeno stares at her nails for a moment before finally opening her mouth.

"She was never around... She cared only for herself," Akeno is unable to suppress the hate climbing in her tone. It only grows more evident with each passing word. "Scarcely do I recall ever creating any fond memories with her. Looking back at it now... She never even felt like part of our family. She... Was focused on someone else."

Sayomi's eyes gleam with intrigue at the shift in Himejima's tone on the last sentence. Her hatred reaches near its peak.

"She had someone else that was more important to her than her own family. That person," Akeno's lips curve into a scowl, her hands clenching together tightly to a point it is shaking, "Always garnered her attention. She broke many promises to me because she needed to be with them. Huh," Akeno cracks out a hollow smirk; her eyes carry disdain. "Shortly after Mom was murdered, she simply up and left us. I bet she went running to that oh-so-precious person of hers. Leaving me behind when I..." Akeno pause but pushes the following words out "When I needed her the most."

"... Heh."

Akeno looks up in shock. She stares at the Pureblood, chuckling.

"Calm yourself," Sayomi opens her eyes, an amusing grin bears on her face. She peers at those glaring violet orbs. "I am merely amused by the irony in all of this." "And what do you mean by that?!" Akeno spat out with venom.

"I never was aware of you holding such resentment for Karasu," Akeno scowls at the name but does not interrupt the Pureblood. "I knew of how absent she was during most of your life. She and I had a relationship that allowed me to obtain some insight into your family." "Are you the reason for her absences?!" Akeno shouts, the idea sparking in her head.

Remaining ever calm, Sayomi confers entertainment by Himejima's accusation. However, she can't blame her for running with that idea. "Believe whatever you wish. But, I have done nothing to Karasu to make her be that way. What you told was the truth. There was indeed someone in Karusu's life that she cherished and loved that had garnered her undivided attention. So much so she placed him above even her own family and dedicated most part of her early life solely to him."

Akeno leans forward, her eyes widening in apprehension.

"You know who this person is?!" Sayomi tilts her head. "Of course. And you happen to know him very well too" "... W-what?" Akeno whispers. A sudden feeling of dread bubbles inside her heart.

"Before I came into the fray, Karasu was the one to care for Nawin alongside his parents. He was her whole world, and Karasu took upon herself to dedicate much of her life for his sake."

Akeno feels her blood go cold. The world around her comes to an abrupt stop. Her heart begins pounding so violently that she can hear it. Sayomi's words repeat in her mind again and again. Loud and clear.

"N-No," Akeno shakes her head, her wide eyes pushing ignorance, "You are lying! T-That's not correct! H-how can this be when I have never even met Nawin-kun once in my younger years?!" "Why should there be the need for you to reach him?" Sayomi sharply retorts, "You were merely an outsider. You had no role in the matter. So why was there a need for you to meet Nawin?"

Hearing all of this. It brings up a memory within Akeno. A memory of that photo she found hiding within an album in Makasha's house.

The photo showed her mother with Nawin. And it was apparent, her mother held love for him by the way she smiled while holding onto him. Akeno cannot deny the fact that her family was very much involved with Nawin's family in the past.

'Why would all of this be kept a secret from me?! Why is it that you never make an effort for me to even meet with Nawin-kun, mother?'

Sayomi perceives clear what Himejima is pondering by just examining those violet orbs.

"Then..." Akeno chokes on her own saliva, her throat tightening for a second before relaxing and allowing her to speak. "Nawin-kun was the one all along... W-why?" Akeno looks up at the Pureblood. Desperation bears on her front, seeking an answer.

Sayomi remains indifferent before opening her mouth.

"Cause Nawin was Karasu's to be," "..." Akeno's mouth agape, her body falls back entirely on the chair, her eyes widen in disbelief. "S-She... T-they wer—" Akeno is unable to finish those words, her mind in shamble, failing to form any coherent words.

Sayomi tilts her head, her eyes staring to the side. Those blood-red orbs recollect specific memories.

"For the time, it makes perfect sense on both parties. Yao and Jonathan desired their son's safety above all else. Shuri wished for her daughter's happiness. Karasu was a prodigy since birth. At a young age, she already was ten times stronger than you are present. Moreover, her love for Nawin was apparent since she first set eyes on him. Yao and Shuri were not blind to that and decided an arranged marriage would be in order for the pair."

"No," Akeno shakes her head "NO! You are lying!" she shouts out, yet her voice scarcely holds conviction.

Sayomi pays no mind to Himejima's outburst and merely continues.

"They waited till Nawin turn five to make the marriage official. Over the years, they both watched just how happy the pair were together. Being the older one, Karasu was always there for Nawin and acted much like a guardian to him. She nurtured him and took care of him when Yao and Jonathan could not. And in turn, Nawin always reciprocated those feelings. He unceasingly was happy and gleeful by Karasu's company. Understanding just how natural and well the two bonded with one another, how happy they were together. Yao and Shuri had little ambiguity left and went with marriage."

Sayomi turns to face Akeno.

"They were naive and desperate. Yao and Shuri. Their love for their children made them act impulsively, rushing them to their happily ever after, believing that Karasu shall always be there by Nawin's side and protect him and love him till his death. And I don't doubt if things turned out differently in the past. It could've been just be the way they envisioned. But," Sayomi draws a humorous smirk, "They did not account for someone else to enter Nawin's life and shift the entire predicament."

Akeno looks up from her hands. Her eyes now coldly glare at the Pureblood.

"What do you mean by that?" "None of them took to mind the possibility that Nawin could become bewitched and fall in love with someone else. If that were to happen, all their plan and hopes would be at risk. And, unfortunately to all the parties... That was what came to pass."

A long, tense silence befalls upon the pair. None speaks a word.

Akeno stares absent-mindlessly at her hands resting on the table. She does not know what to think or even believe. Her instinct warns her not to trust a single sentence that has left Sayomi's mouth. Yet, in her mind and heart, she recognized they could very well be true.

All of what Akeno heard serves to fill in these blanks that were always there when regarding her sister. And, it brings light and sense of why her mother was involved with the Makasha.

Karasu has forever been an enigma to Akeno. They have always been sisters by name and blood more than anything else. And listening to what Sayomi had said, it is genuinely the first time in Akeno's life that she has ever learned this much about her own elder sister.

'All those countless times you left me high and dry... Breaking promises. You did all of those things for Nawin-kun?'

"You were the one, weren't you?" Akeno softly asks, looking up. "That Nawin-kun fell in loved with." The photo that Rias showed her reemerge in her mind. That smile on Nawin's face. So genuine and happy, she can never forget that smile. And he wore it with the person sitting across from her.

"Indeed I am," Sayomi calmly answer, "Though I have no intent or interest to comment further about my involvement." A fierce expression crosses upon her face. "My past with Nawin is something you have no need to grasp, Himejima."

Akeno winces by the sudden shift in tone from the Pureblood. It is unwise to push on that matter. So, she suppresses the curiosity bubbling within her.

"... Why tell me all of this?" "To make something clear with you."

A chair abruptly goes knocking aside by Sayomi swiftly standing up. She pushes her right hand forward to snatch Akeno's head, forcibly pulling her to her feet. Then, with her index finger and thumb holding around Akeno's headframe, Sayomi pulls her in close to stare deep within those startled and fearful violet orbs.

"You know why I don't like you, Himejima?" Sayomi quietly but coldly asks. Akeno says nothing, only staring intimidatingly back at those powerful eyes. "It's cause you are merely a girl who lucked into Nawin's heart. How is it that Nawin looked over people like Misako Ichiru or Irina Shidou? Girls that hold better hearts than you and would do right by Nawin's side. How is it he looked past them and be with you?"

"Love," Akeno whispers out and takes a hand to Sayomi's wrist, trying to pry her off.

"Love," Sayomi smirks in amusement, "He did indeed love you. But don't you always find it puzzling why he gave you such a chance? Why, after Raynare, was he quick to give a relationship another shot so soon? And why was he always so patient with you when things were becoming toxic between the two of you?"

Akeno offers no reply, as she has none. Instead, she stares at the Pureblood with confusion and shock.

"He may not remember Karasu. But, there will always be a part in his mind that is familiar with her. And," Sayomi leans in to get right into Himejima's face, "This pretty face of yours is what drew him to you. He may not be aware of it, but I've seen those looks of reminiscing and familiarity when he gazes upon you numerous times. Your relationship with him was built upon a bond of the past that Nawin fostered with your sister. If you hadn't been born with this face that shares a striking resemblance to Karasu. Nawin wouldn't give you a second look, and you'd just wind up being another friend of his like that Gremory and the rest."

"You were never meant to be with him and to prove that fact further," Sayomi lifts Akeno up, pulling her feet off the ground. "You succeeded in pushing him to the very point that he felt forced to leave the relationship. Nawin always was forgiving to you, and you had an abundance of chances to set it right. Yet, you annoying persist in making decisions that only result in squandering those chances and end up hurting Nawin!"

In a fit of irritation and anger, Sayomi pulls Akeno back then hurls her away.

Himejima ends up slamming back-first onto the solid wall. Cracks split on the brown surface by the impact, and Akeno coughs out empty air by the severe crash.

Slowly sliding down to her feet, Akeno collapses knees first onto the cold floor. She has no strength to give both physically and mentally.

"You distrust him with your past and doubt him when he needed your support the most. You learn new things about him and his past yet give nothing in return. You develop jealousy and even hate towards Miraya when you witness clearly just how much she meant to Nawin. Your distaste for Miraya stems from the fact she is everything that you are not... Her existence points out your flaws and the flaw in your relationship with Nawin. Am I right, Himejima?" Sayomi stops in front of Akeno, looking down at her with those dark eyes. "Selfish, ignorant, and narcissistic. All of that is what I see in you. It is pathetic to comprehend that you are the sister of Karasu."

Kneeling in front of Akeno, Sayomi bears a taunting smirk.

"So blind you are. Your attention is always focused on Nawin, yet you still fail to comprehend many things occurring around him. Tell me, do you recall that night, the Masquerade event?"

Akeno's dull eyes slowly widen, wondering how Sayomi would know of this.

"Remember a nameless woman coming towards you and asked for permission to dance with your dear Nawin?" "N-No," Akeno shakes her head, understanding what the Pureblood is insinuating, not believing her words.

"Silver locks tied to a side ponytail. A half-face masquerade masks painted in black with magenta spirals. One shoulder dress reaching to the knees, color in magenta." Each description leaving Pureblood's mouth only widens Akeno's eyes further. "You never even noticed when handing Nawin over to me."

"It can't be... H-He'd say something to me!" "And what?" Sayomi snickers. "What would you do? He kept quiet to keep you safe. There's a lot of things he has not told you regarding me. Cause he does not trust you enough to be level-headed about it. Your reckless actions and reactions at matters that regard to him always garner worry from him, Himejima."

Akeno grimaces and has nothing to say to defend herself. Sayomi is right. If Nawin had said something to her about it, Akeno would have acted rashly and done something reckless the next time she confronted Sayomi.

'You kept all of that a secret to protect me cause you knew how I'd react...'

"Now you get it?" Akeno weakly looks up at Sayomi. "You and he should have never been a thing. The result to an end to you two's relationship is a testimony of that." "And what," Akeno muster up some strength to scowl, "You saying he should be with you?" "He already is."

Akeno goes speechless by the comment.

Then, something catches her attention from the side of her vision. Something is glistering from Sayomi's right hand. Akeno finds her eyes drawing towards it, and her beath hitches at what it is.

Wearing snuggly around the index finger of the Pureblood's is a striking black ring. The simplistic design of it along with that beautiful red color gem embedded right in the center. Akeno recognizes it immediately being the exact identical ring that Nawin wears.

"There was always something holding both of you back, weren't there?" Sayomi tilts her head, smirking in knowing, "I've only recently learned that you two have not even gone intimate with one another. Weird, isn't it? Being with him for that long." "H-How do you know that?!" Akeno shouts. "Cause I've taken the pleasure of being his first. Rightfully so."

Akeno feels as if her entire world just comes crashing down. Her heart momentarily stops.

"N-No," Himejima stutters out, her lips quivering. Her eyes stare at the ground, unable to bear looking at that smirk on the Pureblood's face. "Y-You are lying. Nawin-kun... H-He would never do anything like that with you." "Choose whatever you desire to believe. I care less either way."

Slowly extending her knees stand back up, Sayomi gazes down upon Akeno. She has taken the last news the hardest.

Now staring mindlessly at the space between her legs, Akeno's eyes slowly turn glossy. Regret, sorrow, and disbelief are all present in those wide violet orbs.

"Though you caused him much pain and difficulty, I shall not turn a blind eye to the fact that you have brought some joyful moments to his life. So, I'll leave you this one piece of advice that'll benefit both you and him in the end."

Sayomi turns around and flicks her fingers.

A dark portal splits open from reality in front of the Pureblood. A swarm of bats flocks out from the world of darkness, circling around their master.

"Give up on pursuing love with Nawin cause you aren't worthy of it. Rather, focus and better yourself as a warrior and a person. At this moment, you are merely a loss piece in the grand scheme of things, Akeno Himejima."

"... You are right."

Sayomi pauses by the portal. She glances behind and sees Akeno staring at her.

"Right now, I'm not worthy of being with Nawin-kun. How our relationship ended proves that. I have to face myself and my past first before I can even wish to be with him once more. I made mistakes. Mistakes made by my insecurities, jealously, and fear that was conceived by my past. But I won't blame it on just my past because it is also a fault of my current self."

Akeno presses her right hand back to the wall, pushing herself slowly to return to her feet.

"A lot of things you said are true... But, one thing you can forget about is that I will give up on ever loving Nawin-kun." Akeno sucks air into her lungs. Resolve burns evidently in her eyes even as tears trickle down to her cheeks.

"Whatever you think of our relationship! Even if it is built upon my sister's past with Nawin-kun! I don't care as I know my love for him is genuine! And I know he felt the same way too when we were together! What I had with him was something I'll never trade for! So when the time comes when I can face myself in the mirror and not think of the past or the pains inflicted by it, I will do whatever it takes to try to be with him again. If need be, I'll spend the remaining days in this world to do whatever it takes to beg for his forgiveness and for him to give me another chance. Because that's how much I love Nawin-kun!"

Himejima's thunderous words echo through the room.

Sayomi stares at the panting Himejima with wide eyes. For a split second, she sees an image of her younger self paralleling Akeno. Their eyes, bearing identical resolve and fire in them. All for Nawin.

"Huh," Sayomi snorts in dismissive and turns around, stepping into the portal.

"I'll see if your resolve will burn as bright as you claim, Akeno Himejima. And will it sustain going into the future."

Akeno watches the portal soon shut and vanish from existence. In that instance, the barrier around the cafe breaks away, and everyone inside resumes their activities.

Luckily, with her being near the end of the room, Akeno manages to stay under the customers' radar. Holding her bruised arm, she slowly makes her way toward the exit in a discreet manner to not draw any attention to her.

"Thank you, Miss!" A lady at the counter happily exclaims as Akeno leaves the building.

Bringing a hand up to her face, Akeno wipes away the remnant of tears clinging to her cheeks. She takes a deep breath and exhales, striving to compose herself.

After creating a fair distance from the cafe, Akeno comes to a stop. She finds herself gazing up to the sky and finally takes notice of the beautiful night. Sea of bright stars spread across the darkened sky, the moon is out in full and illuminates brilliantly.

For a moment, the sound of the nightlife blurs away, and the scene of the passing masses vanish from sight. Akeno gazes upon the starry night with wonder and hope. A faint but crooked smile forms on her lip. Her violet orbs are dull, almost empty of emotions.

"Whatever it takes... I will work my hardest to earn your love and trust once more, Nawin-kun."

High up on top of one of the many buildings rowing through the streets. A brown crow hangs by the ledge, its head jerking in different angles though its eyes remain in a single spot. The striking slit violet orbs of its stare down at Akeno.

Spreading its wings out, it caws to the night before flapping its wings to lift to the air. The crow flies high into the sky before dispersing into a flock of feathers.
