High Up.
"Have fun guys!" Jimin waved as he watched Jin, Namjoon, and Jungkook start heading out with the car. The three were headed on a little adventure together. None of the others had wanted to go so they stayed back and all waved goodbye.
"Send us pictures!" Hobi yelled after them. Jungkook gave a thumbs up out the car window. He was sitting in the passenger seat while Jin drove. Namjoon took advantage of having the back all to himself and spread his legs out over the seats.
The trunk of the car was full of everything they'd need for their little trip. The plan was to drive up to one of the peaks of a scenic mountain and from there they would have to hike up the rest to get to a cabin. It was a sought after tourist attraction that had to be booked months in advance. Thankfully it was finally their turn to go. The cabin was situated at the highest peak of the mountain and covered in snow all year round, so they made sure to bring the right attire to hike through snow.
They were told there would be equipment at the cabin the members could use to have fun, such as snow mobiles, skis, sleds, etc.
"I'm so excited!" Jungkook cheered as they ventured further from home. It was about a three hour drive to get to the mountain and then it was another hour drive up the mountain.
Along the way they did all they could to entertain themselves. They played games, sang along to music, quizzed each other about various topics, stopped for meals, etc.
Finally after hours of driving they reached the entrance. It was a gate that Jin had to get out and open with a code that was given to him when they had booked the place. Once that was open Jin drove the car through and they were headed up.
"Oh, this is steep," Jin gulped. He was a confident driver but this was new. There were moments where he had to drive the car up straight, steep inclines, and instances where he had to drive along the outer edges of the mountain.
"Want me to drive?" Namjoon joked.
Jungkook burst into laughter. "Yeah right, hyungie. We'd fall right off this cliff."
"Yah! Stop talking and let me concentrate!" Jin lightly scolded. The drive was making him nervous. He was more excited for the part where they could park the car and walk up to the cabin. An hour later they finally reached that point.
They got out and explored for a little bit. The landscape was beautiful, the area was flat enough for parking so they didn't have to worry about the car rolling away. There was a big pond they could see and nice views from the edge of the mountain. Jungkook was looking out at the landscape below him when he first realized he was feeling a bit dizzy. He decided to keep quiet about it because he knew the moment he said something his hyungs would worry and he didn't want to burden them. He walked back over to them. "Can we get started on hiking up to the cabin? It's quite a hike."
"Ahh yes, we should get that part over with," Namjoon agreed. They grabbed their backpacks out of the trunk and locked up the car. They headed for the trails that would lead them up through snow covered peaks.
"Aish..it must have snowed recently. The snow is deep," Jin complained. They had been trudging through at least half a foot of snow, making the hike take a lot longer than they had anticipated. Namjoon and Jin got lost in conversation with each other for a while when they realized Jungkook had fallen behind a bit and was being extremely quiet. They stopped and waited for the maknae to catch up a bit.
"You okay back there?" Namjoon asked. "I almost forgot you were with us. You're not usually so quiet."
"Just tired," Jungkook replied. He was more than tired. His body felt absolutely exhausted and his headache had gotten worse. His body was starting to feel generally unwell. Jin grabbed Jungkook's arm and decided to link it with his for the remainder of the hike. He didn't want the youngest to feel left out or like they were leaving him behind. "When we get to the cabin the first thing we will do is rest and eat. Sound good?"
Jungkook nodded. Resting sounded great. He didn't feel all that hungry, though. His stomach hurt.
By the time they had reached the peak of the mountain and could see the cabin, Jin was practically dragging Jungkook at this point. "We made it!" Jin screamed happily. They made their way inside and the oldest helped the maknae immediately lay down on one of the beds. Jungkook closed his eyes in hopes that it would help ease his pounding head.
While Jungkook rested, Namjoon and Jin browsed around the little log cabin. There was a small kitchen, bunk beds built into the walls, a bathroom, and a big living space with a fireplace. There was no TV, as the cabin was meant to be a time to unplug. Although there was electricity from the solar panels, unfortunately there was no cell service. They realized they wouldn't be able to contact the others until they were back off the mountain.
Jin and Namjoon started unpacking all of the backpacks before finally sitting on the couch. They began to feel drained after such a long hike. Namjoon looked over to see Jungkook curled up under a blanket with his eyes closed. "Kook?" he asked. The youngest didn't stir.
"Well someone was tired. The kid fell asleep immediately!" Namjoon laughed. He was also a bit surprised, it wasn't like the youngest to have less stamina than themselves.
"What do you want to do?" Jin asked Namjoon. They decided to let the maknae sleep while they entertained themselves.
"Snowboard?" Namjoon suggested.
They found the storage room with all the fun equipment and pulled out some snow boards. They checked on Jungkook one last time before heading out and snowboarding down a small slope, but within half an hour they couldn't help but wish Jungkook was out there with them, making it not much fun.
"Maybe we should wake him up, I'm sure fresh air could help him feel a bit better," Jin suggested. They went inside and shook the youngest awake.
"Hmm?" Jungkook groaned without opening his eyes.
"Come outside with us. I think some fresh air will be good for you. Maybe it will make you feel better," Jin said.
"No.." Jungkook whimpered. His body was too tired to move, let alone get up and make it outside. Namjoon grabbed him and started dragging him off the bed. "Come on, you could use it."
Jungkook continued to groan in pain as his hyungs led him to sit outside. He plopped down in the snow and swayed back and forth from dizziness. He looked up at his hyungs and saw double of each of them. His vision was getting bad. Jin and Namjoon sat with him and tried cracking jokes, but the youngest didn't care for them.
Now he was having trouble breathing. He put his hand to his chest and tried to take deep breaths but he felt like he couldn't get a proper breath in. Like he was becoming desperate for oxygen.
Namjoon took his own hand and placed it on Jungkook's chest. "What's wrong?" His worry had heightened.
Jungkook started to lightly hyperventilate. "I don't know, hyung. I'm still not feeling good and kind of feel like I can't breathe." He then fell into a coughing fit. Jin leaned over and patted Jungkook's back. He gave a worried glance to Namjoon.
"Have you been getting a cold or something? If you have been starting to not feel well we could have postponed this." Namjoon wasn't mad or anything, just bummed that the youngest wasn't feeling his best.
"Hyung I wasn't sick! I felt totally fine until we got here!"
"Maybe it all just caught up to you now then," Namjoon replied. He decided that now it probably wasn't a good idea for Jungkook to be sitting outside in the snow so he stood up, pulled his maknae to his feet, and lead him back into the cabin.
Jungkook plopped back on the bed in a coughing fit. Jin started looking through the stuff they'd brought. "Did we bring any kind of medicine? I hate to see him suffering."
"I don't think we did," Namjoon replied regretfully. They both heard Jungkook start hyperventilating harder and wheezing, his desperate gulps for oxygen had become raspy. They ran to him and surrounded him on the bed.
Namjoon put his hand against Jungkook's ribs and told him to try and take deep breaths, the youngest tried but struggled. Namjoon could feel the mucus build up. "You've gotten quite congested."
"It hurts," Jungkook whimpered as he lay back down and curled up under the covers again. His lungs were hurting. Everything was hurting. He was nervous that he couldn't breathe well, he didn't understand how it happened all of the sudden. He tried to get warm under the covers and lay as still as possible in a desperate attempt to not start throwing up, because he was feeling quite nauseous now. Jin sat next to him on the bed and caressed his hair to try and soothe him.
Namjoon placed his hand on the maknae's forehead but he wasn't warm. "No fever? That's odd."
Jungkook didn't say anything. He lay there silently and watched his hyungs. He felt terrible that him being sick was ruining their free time. He didn't want them to worry like this or feel obligated to take care of him.
"I'm just going to rest more. Hyungs it's okay if you want to go back out and do things."
"Actually I was thinking of curling up with a book by the fireplace." Namjoon came up with that on the spot in order to make Jungkook feel better. He could tell the youngest felt guilty and didn't want him to. He decided to put his own plans to the back of his thoughts and do something where he could keep an eye out for him.
"Me too," Jin said.
"You hate reading," Namjoon chuckled.
"Not today!" Jin laughed. This got a slight laugh from their dongsaeng too. Namjoon and Jin both grabbed a book, which Namjoon had brought a couple for when they had down time. They sat next to eachother on the couch next to a newly lit fireplace that Jin got started. They weren't really paying attention to the books. They both sat there staring at Jungkook, who'd closed his eyes again. They watched as his chest rose and fell rapidly, and they could hear his wheezing from where they sat.
Jin turned to Namjoon. "Joonie I'm worried about him," he whispered. "If he's feeling sick to the point he's having trouble breathing I don't think we should stay here long. He needs a doctor before he gets worse. Our poor bun seems to have gotten really sick out of nowhere." As the oldest he felt it was his duty to make sure everyone was okay all the time, so whenever someone fell ill he was always the first to respond in an effort to help.
"I agree with you, hyung. Let's see how he's feeling tomorrow and if he's not feeling better we will head out. I'm not too worried about having to reschedule this. It will be more fun next time as long as he's feeling better." Namjoon continued to watch the maknae's chest rising and falling. "I don't understand how this hit so hard out of nowhere. That's not like his usual colds or sicknesses. For him they always start gradually."
"I don't know either," Jin replied. They were both at a loss.
Jin asked Namjoon if he was hungry, in which he was, so they made some soup together. Jin went over and rubbed Jungkook's back to wake him up.
"Hmm?" A sleepy Jungkook mumbled.
"You hungry? Can you try to eat something? It may help. Hyungs made some soup, something that will be light on the stomach."
Jungkook shook his head no without opening his eyes. Jin tried to force him to eat anyway by taking a spoonful of soup and trying to shove it in Jungkook's mouth, but it spilled everywhere. "Please Kook-ah? Just a little bit? Hyungs are worried."
Jungkook simply shook his head no again. Opening his eyes hurt too much, even with them closed he felt the room spinning.
Namjoon kneeled down next to the maknae's head and ran his fingers through his hair. "If you don't feel better by tomorrow morning we're going to leave, okay?"
This got Jungkook's attention. He mumbled again. "N-no...hyungs....stay...have fun.."
"We can have fun another time, what's important is your health, bunny." Jin caressed Jungkook's cheek. Both of his cheeks had gotten quite red. The youngest started to cough badly again and Jin stood there rubbing his chest and patting it. He turned to Namjoon and gave him another worried expression. The leader returned the same worried look. They felt terrible that there was nothing they could do to help as it was already night time and they couldn't hike down in the dark.
They also couldn't hike down the next morning because a terrible blizzard had rolled through. Jin had gone outside to see how bad it was and he almost got lost as soon as he'd stepped out the front door. The blizzard was so bad and the snow was coming down so hard he couldn't even see his own hand when he held it out in front of him.
Jungkook hadn't woken up yet when Jin went outside. The oldest walked over to the leader and pulled him aside in case Jungkook was secretly listening. "We can't leave in this," he whispered, "What the hell do we do if he's still really sick, Joonie? We can't stay here and who knows when this storm will end!"
While talking they heard Jungkook shuffle in bed and then start coughing. His coughing was getting worse and worse. He sounded like he was trying to hack out the ocean from his lungs. They both looked at eachother and knew they were in a really bad situation now because Jungkook was clearly more sick than the day before and for the time being they were trapped in the cabin.
They ran to the youngest. Jungkook's coughs were so raspy and mucusy that he couldn't get any oxygen into his lungs. His hyungs were panicking and so was he. He felt like he was drowning. Jin grabbed him and turned him to lay on his stomach, then hitting his back gentle enough to not hurt him but hard enough to help him cough up all the liquid. It was white and frothy.
"Ew..what the hell is that?" Namjoon asked when he saw what the maknae was coughing up. It didn't even look like normal spit.
Jin ran and got a small trashcan so Jungkook could spit up into it. He was coughing so hard now that he was gagging and starting to throw up. Hot tears were pouring down his cheeks. He wanted the misery to be over. He'd never felt this kind of sick before.
"Nooo please don't cry," Namjoon cooed when he saw the youngests tears. "You'll feel better before you know it."
"I-I don't feel good, hyungs," Jungkook whimpered. He was at the point where he felt so sick he just wanted to go home, but when he saw the blizzard outside of the window he knew that wouldn't be happening anytime soon. He buried his face into his hands and continued to cry. Jin pulled him into a hug. "We know you don't feel good, bunny. I'm sorry there's nothing we can really do for you. You just have to keep resting." While hugging Jungkook he looked over at Namjoon, they both could see the helpless feeling in each others expressions.
After some more back rubs, the youngest fell asleep again. His breathing had gotten labored and it sounded like he was drowning with every breath he took. His eyelids started to swell and then so did his cheeks. When the hyungs noticed his decline they panicked even more.
"Joon....he's suffering too much. We have to figure something out. What if he has some kind of infection or something? We've done nothing and he's only getting sicker." Jin didn't know what the hell the problem was but he knew whatever it was, it was only getting worse and it scared the hell out of him.
Namjoon was worried as hell too. In his head he tried figuring out every single thing that could have gone wrong for Jungkook between when they'd arrived and when he started to not feel good. He was fine when we left home. Fine eating. Fine when we parked the car at the mountain. We hiked up and he was feeling sick. What could have happened on the hike up? Think...Namjoon...think...
Hike...hike...up...
It finally hit him.
"Jin hyung!" Namjoon screamed. "The altitude! He's getting sick because of the atmosphere! Oh hyung we have to get him out of here! If he stays too long it could kill him! We've already been up here too long that's why he's so sick!"
Jin looked at Namjoon with wide, terrified eyes. "You think that's the problem?! How the hell do we get him out of here in this weather?! We won't be able to see shit out there! We'd just get lost!"
"Well we can't stay here! If we stay here he dies!" Namjoon fought back.
"And if we go out there he dies too!" Jin burst into tears. He didn't see a way out. He figured leaving wasn't an option because they'd just get lost and swallowed by the blizzard, but Namjoon wasn't backing down.
"He either dies here, or we all die at least trying to save him," Namjoon demanded.
"You really want to do this?" Jin asked, panicking.
The two stared at each other in silence. Both of them were crying. "We..we have to, hyung. We have to help him. We have to try. This can't wait. He's already too sick."
"Okay." Jin took a deep breath to clam his nerves. He was terrified about the entire situation but understood Namjoon's point and fully trusted his decision. If Jungkook was in this much danger they needed to try to get him to safety and to a hospital for help. Their only option was to brave the storm. They decided they were going to leave their stuff there and worry about that another time. Right now the only priority was Jungkook. They both walked over to him and shook him awake. The maknae was completely out of it. He moved and groaned a bit but didn't open his eyes.
"Hey, bunny, we're leaving. We realized you're sick because of the air up here and we need to get you out of here," Jin said softly. He tussled Jungkook's hair, "We will get our stuff later but right now we have to go."
Jungkook opened one eye but it rolled closed again. He was too weak and dizzy to comprehend what Jin was telling him, but he felt his body getting picked up and before he knew it was being piggy backed on one of his hyungs.
Namjoon and Jin took turns carrying their sick and almost unconscious maknae through the snow. They made sure to bundle him and themselves up in the warmest clothes for the journey. They couldn't see through the snow but Namjoon was still able to use the compass on his phone to help guide them a bit. It was much, much harder walking through now almost two feet of snow. Especially while carrying another person. Jin and Namjoon made sure to cling to each other while they walked so they wouldn't get separated. They had to stop for a moment when Jungkook started to throw up over Jin's shoulder, thankfully it only lasted a minute. The two hyungs had to yell loudly just to hear one another speak or give some kind of direction.
And finally, they found the car after hours of making their way back down. They lay Jungkook down in the back seat. He was completely unresponsive and the two grew frantic. Jin tried shaking him. "Hey, no. Wake up. Koo? Koo wake up! Stay awake! Namjoonie-ah why isn't he responding?!"
"I don't know! We just have to get off this mountain and call for help!" Namjoon panicked. They frantically got all the snow off the car that they could and then Jin hopped in the drivers seat and Namjoon hopped in the passenger seat. They gave each other worried looks again. The drive up the mountain had been terrifying enough for Jin and now fear was absolutely ravaging through his body knowing he needed to somehow get the car down this steep mountain in a blizzard. Namjoon squeezed his hyungs shoulder. "You can do it, hyung. I believe in you. For maknae."
Jin took a few deep breaths and started slowly hitting the gas. They weren't sure how well the car would do in this kind of snow, but thankfully it seemed to do alright. After a treacherous and dangerous journey back down the mountain they finally made it to the main road, and just like magic the blizzard had calmed and fallen into a light snow fall.
The first thing they did when they had cell service again was call for an ambulance. They continued to drive until they saw the ambulance in the distance and waved it down. Flying out of the car, the two hyungs began screaming and pleading for help.
"Please! Hurry! Help! He needs help!" Jin screamed through tears. They watched as paramedics opened their car door and pulled Jungkook out onto a stretcher. They tried waking him up but he was still unresponsive. His vitals were weak. They put an oxygen mask on his face and whisked him away in the ambulance, leading Jin and Namjoon who sped there behind them.
When they arrived they ran in asking if he'd woken up or anything, but there was no good news. Jungkook's condition hadn't gotten any better. They were mortified with the thought that Jungkook was going to die and they held each other tightly while they cried.
"I don't want to lose him, hyung," Namjoon sobbed.
"I know. Me either," Jin cried back.
Jin called the others and there was a lot of panic. The hospital was a good three hours away from everyone else and they were so desperate to get to the hospital as fast as possible that they ended up getting their company to rent them a private helicopter to pick them up and get them there.
When the others arrived they ran in and met up with Jin and Namjoon. Everyone was crying and hugging each other.
"What the hell happened to him?!" Hobi screamed as he wiped his tears. "Has he gotten any better? Is he going to be okay?!"
Jin said they didn't know what the outcome would be, which made everyone fall into a fit of panic attacks. Taehyung and Yoongi ran around trying to find anyone who could get some information but they were escorted back into the waiting room with the others with no news.
Their hearts were broken as they sat around waiting while having no answers to anything. Namjoon and Jin explained what had gone wrong and how they'd gotten their maknae off the mountain once they realized what the problem was but they were terrified that it may have been too late. The others commended them for their bravery on carrying Jungkook through the storm and driving the car. The two didn't brag or boast about it, they said it was all they could do.
After a few hours a doctor came in to finally report on Jungkook's condition. To their relief he'd actually woken up and was on the mend. The doctor said if he hadn't gotten there when he did he may have been much worse off in the end. The members hugged each other cheerfully at the good news and asked if they could see him. They were allowed to visit but were told he still wasn't feeling great and he was sleepy, but they didn't care. They raced to his room and found him laying in his hospital bed with his eyes slightly opened. He turned his gaze to them.
"Hyungs? "Jungkook whispered. He was confused. He didn't quite remember what happened to him and how all the sudden all of his hyungs were surrounding him in a hospital. They all stood around him, touching him, holding his hands, playing with his hair, caressing his cheeks.
"You scared the hell out of us, Kook-ah!" Jin said, "Never do that again! We were terrified for you!"
"What happened?" Jungkook asked.
Namjoon and Jin explained everything to their maknae and the others hearts broke hearing about how sick the youngest had gotten on their trip. Jungkook began to remember how bad he felt until the moment of falling unconscious.
"They even carried you through the blizzard!" Yoongi reminded.
The youngest was completely blown away by what his hyungs had been willing to do in order to save him. He couldn't have been more grateful. He only spoke for a few moments before falling asleep again. A nurse came in to check on him and they asked her if he was really going to be okay.
"Of course," the nurse smiled, "He's on the mend, and once he's feeling a bit better and rests up he'll be as good as new."
The members felt another wave of relief hearing the good news. All would be okay. Jungkook was going to be okay.
A few days later Jungkook was feeling like himself again. His hyungs hadn't left his side the entire time. He apologized to Jin and Namjoon for ruining their vacation but they told him it's no big deal as long as he was okay.
"Plus Jin and I have to go back to get our stuff." Namjoon smiled while looking at Jungkook and the members knew the rapper wasn't done with whatever it was he was trying to say. Namjoon started chuckling to himself before making a light hearted joke.
"Would you like to come with us?" Namjoon asked. Everyone chuckled and Jungkook said he thinks he'll have to pass on that.
As the day progressed it was clear that the youngest was feeling much better and was going to be discharged soon. The members couldn't thank Jin and Namjoon enough for their act of bravery in saving their maknae.
They knew that no matter where they were or which members they were with, they were always in good hands, and always going to be protected.
[The End]
