Chapter 5
Reyna yawned and snuggled back into the warm chest behind her, about to sink back into slumber–Her eyes shot open. Finnick was here last night. My nightmare–how did he even get here so fast?
She tried to sit up, only to make Finnick shift a little and pull her closer to him with the arm he had slung over her waist. Her cheeks flushed lightly with something she didn't even want to try to identify when he nuzzled her neck softly.
If this was anybody but Finnick, she would've gotten up regardless, but he was so freaking warm, and she never got to relax like this, knowing he was watching over her.
Oh, well. I really don't care if Lily chastises us. He's too comfortable to cuddle with. And with that thought in mind, she snuggled further into his arms and drifted back into her dreamless, nightmare-free sleep–the first in a long, long time.
"-how she is, Finnick. She has walls. If you're sure you want to break them down and be with her, that's fine. Just...take care not to break either of your hearts." Lily's voice roused her from her sleep.
"I will. I promise." Finnick replied quietly. He was propped up on one elbow, facing Reyna, twirling a lock of her richly colored brown hair between his fingers.
"I know you will." Her stylist walked out.
Reyna waited until her footsteps were long gone before finally surfacing at consciousness and turning over to face Finnick.
"G'morning, Finn." She said through a yawn, eyes half-shut with residual sleep.
"Morning, Reyna." He replied with a small smirk. She finished her yawn by snapping her teeth shut and giving a drowsy smile. Dear goodness, I'm about to melt from all this adorability. He thought, still playing with her hair lazily.
"We could totally not go to training." Reyna looked up at him hopefully.
"Yeah, no. Mags will haul our butts down there herself if we don't get up. And you know she would actually do it, too." Finnick retorted.
She groaned and buried her face in his chest. Oh Lordie, he's so toned!!! She blushed, pulling back and standing up. "Come on, then. We have to get ready."
They rode the elevator down to the Training Center in comfortable silence. She didn't see as many Tributes as she expected when the lift doors opened.
Reyna was immediately drawn to the knife throwing area. She strapped a belt of twenty-four knives on her waist and set the course for an equal number of opponents, stepping onto the platform and waiting for the room to go dark.
A hologram with a machete ran at her, took a hit to the dead center of its forehead, and dissolved. She spun around and threw two knives across each other, taking out another pair of enemies.
Three had snuck up behind her and now tried to attack, armed with swords. She lashed out, slicing the necks of two in an X. The last one got a dagger to the eye socket.
She kept cutting them down until finally there were two left: the archer and the trident-wielder. Katniss and Finnick. She dodged an arrow from the archer and spun, throwing a knife in its heart.
The last enemy ran up to her. She hesitated briefly, before charging it and stabbing it in the chest.
A crowd of eleven Tributes stood outside the training area, eyes wide. Finnick flashed her a grin, pride flickering in his eyes.
Reyna ducked under a sweep of his trident an slashed at his leg, which he blocked with the shaft of his weapon. He whirled around and slashed at her, making her stumble back.
She steadied her swords in her hands and charged him, jumping up and twirling midair, slashing out with both knives. He could only back up to avoid the barrage.
Immediately after, she brought her swords down in an arc, putting all her force behind it. He held up the trident staff with both hands, pushing her back. She stabbed both swords into the mats to stop from sliding back.
She leapt at him, aiming a blow for his side. He dodged and turned, striking her gut with the end of the trident. She was sent skidding backwards, all of the air rushing out of her.
He dropped the trident and ran over, thinking he had seriously hurt her. "Reyna??" His anxious voice called out. She smirked mentally, waiting until he was closer and then sweeping his feet from under him.
Finnick fell to the ground with a thud. She had her (dulled, thank goodness) knife pressed to his throat in a heartbeat, a grin on her face. "I win."
He glared at her, trying to reach for his trident. "Oh, no you don't." She sat down on his chest, her knees pinning his wrists down, and smirked, victory glinting in her eyes.
He tried to throw her off, making her lose her balance and release one of his wrists. In that instant he pushed her off and tossed her practice swords to the side, pinning her down securely. "Not quite." He taunted, his lips curling up in a smirk.
She noticed movement out of the corner of her eye and turned her head to investigate, held down as she was. It was Peeta, Johanna and Katniss. They were gawking openly (okay, Johanna was smirking and Katniss was just surprised) making Reyna blush and squirm under Finnick.
"You're too heavy!" She whined, trying to push him off. He laughed, not budging the slightest.
"Are you calling me fat?"
"No. I'm calling you all muscle." Her eyes widened, realizing how that may have sounded.
"Is that so?" His smirk widened, his voice dropping to a low murmur and his lips moving right next to her ear. "I'm glad you think so, Reyna."
She blushed like crazy. "W-what!?"
Finnick grinned playfully and got up, extending a hand to her. "I'm just joking around, Rey."
"Ah, yes. I forgot how much of an arrogant asshole you can be sometimes." She stalked out of the training area, leaving Finnick stunned.
Johanna burst out laughing, causing Finnick to glare at her and Peeta and Katniss to look at her like she was insane.
"Smooth, Fish Boy. Flirting with her and then saying it's all a joke. That's like giving her a chocolate bar to distract her while you rip off a huge band-aid."
He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "That bad, huh?"
"No, not that bad. Worse. Sleep with one eye open, yeah?"
"Shut up, Jo."
