Chapter 35
Eventually, the relative peace of District 12 was broken, and it was announced that they were taking the fight to the Capitol in two weeks. Already, the base seemed more alive. A quiet buzz was constant, be it the hum of machinery or the murmur of conversation. It soothed Reyna, oddly.
She and Finnick has been training, working to be field-ready. If their combat triggered a flashback, it was suppressed to keep a level head. More often than not, one of them woke with nightmares, and had to stumble to the other's room (much to the chagrin of their respective roommates) in ungodly hours of the night.
Finally, the woman had enough of beating around the bush. She was taking a water break with Finnick when she casually said, "You know, we should get married."
The poor guy nearly choked on his water, then coughed for the next solid five minutes while Reyna rubbed his back and he attempted to clear the H2O from his lungs. When he stopped wheezing, he looked at her like she was crazy. "Marriage? As in, matrimony?"
Reyna bit her lip and stepped back, a blush darkening her cheeks. Her arms crossed in front of her almost instinctively. "I-I mean, it makes sense. We get special privileges a-and - you're right, it's a big deal and it's okay if you're not ready -"
Finnick gently grabbed her hands and twined their fingers together. "Relax, Reyna. You're right, it's the logical decision. But I want you to know that you can choose for yourself now. If you aren't ready to get married, nobody can blame you."
She mumbled out, "I don't know what it should feel like to be ready for something so big - or maybe it's something that only matters a little? - but I want to be with you." Her eyes met his, and uncertainty flickered there. "Capitol be damned, let's be happy for two weeks before the world comes crashing down on us."
His face split in a grin. "Then I'd love to marry you."

The wedding was amazing. Everyone from every station was there, and somehow the District had managed to procure a wedding dress for Reyna and more suitable clothes for Finnick. If you asked either of them about the ceremony, they'd smile through the entire story.
It was all a nervous, anxious, excited blur until the fun began and they relaxed, but here's how it happened.
The dress was gorgeous, yes, and she was grateful to have such a long mirror to check her appearance in, but she didn't know how it was supposed to look. Was she elegant and poised? Was she alluring? Was she strong and independent - would getting married take away from that independence?
Her mile-a-minute thoughts were interrupted by Prim and Mrs. Everdeen coming inside. Reyna thought her legs were going to give out. It was actually happening.
Katniss's mother smiled gently at her and lead her away from the mirror. "You're nervous." She stated, not unkindly.
The Victor nodded, her stomach churning. The older woman had a knowing look in her eye. "That's perfectly normal, Reyna. This is a big commitment, and it's better you realize that than skip in like a lovesick fool and make a mistake, no?"
Reyna bit her lip. "What if he's the one regretting this? What if I'm forcing him to do something he doesn't want to do?" She didn't say the, 'It's happened too much to him before,' but everyone in the room knew it.
Prim came forward and took her calloused hand in her soft ones. Healer's hands for nurturing, not fighting. "He loves you, Reyna. He truly does. Anyone who spends an hour with you two could see it."
Warmth erupted in her chest and she couldn't help a tentative smile. When she looked in the mirror again, she didn't try to asses how others would see her. Just how she and Finnick might. Her hair was in soft, brown curls. It was finally healthy, and the color was amazing. Her makeup wasn't strong or particularly bold, but that's what she loved about it. The Capitol had forced her to wear gaudy things that made her look gorgeous, but it particularly beautiful.
Mrs. Everdeen brought forward a veil, but she shook her head. "No hiding. I want him to see me, the real me."
The next few moments mixed together but she remembered Katniss coming in out of breath to wish her good luck before slipping outside to notify everyone of the bride's impending arrival.
Johanna linked their arms together and smirked just before they walked down the aisle. "You got this," she said with a smile. "I'm proud, Reyna. You're moving on with your life while you have a chance. That's something everyone deserves, but you took your happiness back from the Capitol. Oh, and he's demigod-levels of hot."
They both laughed, and as the doors opened and the bride stepped forward, their smiles were genuine.
After she got up the aisle Finnick smirked at her. "You look beautiful, Reyna."
"You're not so bad yourself." She whispered back.
The rest of the words were meaningless until they got to the vows. She hadn't felt this jittery since her first Games. "Finnick, I-" she broke off and laughed quietly. "I had this whole speech planned out about how much I love you, but it just doesn't seem right. Love means to feel strong emotion toward someone, and that's too broad. I adore you. I admire you. I respect you. I'd follow you to the ends of the world. I mean all of these things when I say I love you."
His vows were next. Their eyes didn't drift apart the entire time. "We've been friends since we were kids, and I've loved you since then. You were always so fearless, even when I wasn't. You stood up for the people you cared for, and taught me to do the same. You held your head high when your pride was broken, even if it was just to breathe from under the water. I learned from you the importance of fighting back and standing up for what you believe in. I learned what selflessness means, even though you pull it off way better." They shared a wry smile, but both started tearing up. "I'd do anything for you, anything you asked, and I'd be smiling the whole time. I love you."
Again, it all blurred together in happy, teary smiles until the presiding man announced that they could kiss. It was electric. It was gentle. It was a whirlwind of emotion and a warm, soothing embrace all at once. They pulled apart reluctantly, their breaths mingling, eyes dark. She felt Finnick's smirk against her lips. "Would you be so kind as to dance with me, Mrs. Odair?"
She nodded and wrapped her arms around his shoulders while his went to her waist. He spun her and they were giddy with love and affection.
The dancing was a blast. Everyone came around and spun together, smiling, happy, relaxed. They didn't have any fancy cake or any food at all, really, but that didn't take away from the party.
Finnick and Reyna were just happy to have that moment, that day, to theirselves. They danced, two people focusing on each other and nobody around them.
When they finally sat down and simply watched, smiles were permanently seared on both their lips. "So," Finnick stared with a smirk and a glint in his eye. "Now that we share the same room..."
She smacked his arm but couldn't help a tiny grin. He just laughed and kissed her on the cheek, adoration in his eyes. "I love you," he said.
"I love you." She whispered back.
A/N: h-hey guys! ............You don't know how sorry I am about not updating for such a long time. I've had kind of a rough transition in my life lately, along with some questions about my future, but that's not a really good excuse, so... sorry? Please don't kill me. I wrote a wedding chapter to make it up for you! Yay, happy couple! Anyway, all I can say is that I watched 2 seasons of iZombie, 2 seasons of Supernatural, the new season of the 100 (I'm still waiting for Bellarke), and both seasons of Voltron: Legendary Defender. If you haven't already, you should check out those shows, they're really good! Voltron may sound geeky but it's a really, really good show. It's on Netflix only, though, so.
Check out my other works (please, I'm begging you) because they're not that bad! Oh, and I didn't edit this chapter at all so sorry for any mistakes. I don't know when I'll update again, so no promises on that. As always, don't forget to read, vote, comment, share, and add! I hope you amazing readers that have stuck with my procrastinating self enjoyed this!
