Chapter 18

They were all gathered together to discuss the newest revelation. "The arena appears to be shaped like a clock, with a new threat every hour." Reyna said as their entire group walked on the rock to the Cornucopia.

"But they stay only in their wedge." Katniss added. "It all starts with the lightning."

"Then the blood rain, fog, monkeys." The District 4 girl reported. "That's the first four hours."

"At 10:00, the big wave." Katniss finished.

"Wiress, you're a genius." Finnick praised, walking past the woman he spoke to.

"Look, the tail points to 12." Peeta commented.

"That's where the lightning strikes at noon and midnight."

Reyna nodded, a feeling of foreboding settling over her. She kissed Finnick, just a peck on the lips. When he looked at her with a question, she smiled a little. "In case something happens. To either of us."

Beetee and Katniss had been talking about the tree during this exchange, and the genius from 3 devised a plan to use the wet sand and the lightning as a weapon.

Wiress sat down, muttering under her breath, while the others talked among themselves, around the circle Peeta was drawing in the black sand under the Horn.

"So 12:00 to 1:00, lightning. 1:00 to 2:00 is blood rain. Then fog, and then monkeys." Peeta recited, crouching.

"And then 10:00 to 11:00 the wave."

"What about everything else? Did you guys see anything?" Reyna asked, crossing her arms.

"Nothing but blood." Jo answered.

Peeta interrupted. "It doesn't matter. As long as we steer clear of whichever sector is active, we should be fine."

Finnick finally spoke, and dryly. "Yeah. Relatively speaking."

Reyna's head snapped up when Wiress gasped, seeing the Gloss stabbing her. But they were too late.

Katniss promptly shot an arrow into him, although Reyna's knife was already sticking in his heart. Two cannons went off, but the girl from 1 was already attacking.

Johanna pushed Katniss to the side and swung her axe into Cashmere with a yell.

Finnick attacked Brutus, after giving a battle cry. He was doing fine until another girl slashed his leg, making Reyna's eyes narrow. That b*tch is as good as dead.

Peeta helped him limp away, and Reyna took the offensive, lips curled back in a terrifying snarl as she spun and slashed. She was chasing a Tribute when the Horn started to spin.

She just had time to sheathe her swords so they didn't impale her before she fell, separated from the others but still in sight.

The problem wasn't primarily in hanging on. Or at least it wouldn't have been if not for the frothing water spraying on the rocks and turning them slick. No, the problem was avoiding the weapons. Very sharp weapons, as Reyna learned, upon getting a scrape on her shoulder.

Cashmere's body rolled off and fell into the water, distracting Katniss. She only had a fingertip's hold on the rock, and her grip was soon gone. She screamed, sliding back.

Johanna barely grabbed her in time, straining to hold them both. She dug her axe into the rock, clenching her jaw tightly. "Hold on!" She grunted, her hold on Katniss slipping. "No!" She shouted as the other woman fell in the water. Jo looked over at where Reyna was, only–

She wasn't there.

Reyna must've been under the water for at least a minute, which would've been fine. Except, the current was too strong. Even for a lifelong, Finnick-taught swimmer.

Speaking of her friend+, she had been out of his sight when she slipped. He didn't know she was gone yet.

Someone else fell into the water, with long brown hair. Katniss.

Reyna tried to swim over to her but her vision was starting to get dark. Maybe she should just sink into the water. Let go.

And that's just what she did, her body going limp. I should really work on not losing consciousness as often as I do.

Finnick raised his head, looking around for Reyna. His eyes held desperation he wasn't about to hide. "Reyna?" He scrambled to his feet, scanning all of the rock. She wasn't there. "Reyna?!"

"Finnick!" Johanna shouted, pointing to the water. Someone was floating back-up in the sea, with brown hair. Reyna.

He dropped his trident, taking two strides before diving in the water and cutting through the distance to her. She was dragged to the sand and laid on her back.

Finnick dropped down on the shore next to her, listening for her heartbeat.

Whatever he heard, it wasn't good. He started small compressions on her chest, pumping her lungs. Five of those, then he leaned down and pinched her nose shut, pressing his lips to hers and breathing in her lungs for her.

Johanna ran over, dropping to her knees next to her friend. "Reyna?"

Finnick tried again, and again, and again. And then he still tried.

"Finnick–" Katniss put a hand on his shoulder, which he roughly shook off.

"No! I'm not giving up on her!" He said, trying again. He didn't notice the tears running down his face, but everyone else did.

Johanna was about to scream at him to stop, that she wasn't coming back, when it happened.

Her eyes flew open, wide as saucers. She started coughing, the sea water being ejected from her lungs. Finnick let out a shaky breath, bringing her into his arms.

Reyna reached up, touching the cuts on his temple gently. A frown appeared on her face as she examined it further. "You're hurt."

"I..." He swallowed thickly, holding her closer. "I thought I truly lost you, and you're worried about me?" His voice rose, incredulous.

She let out an easy grin, reaching up to kiss him briefly before settling back in his arms. Her voice came out weaker than she hoped for but stronger than she expected. "I get the strangest feeling this has happened before, don't you?"

He laughed, the sound muffled by his lips pressed to her hair. "Yeah." He whispered, memories of their first meeting flashing through his mind.

Johanna tried to be mad, she really did. "Don't you ever scare me like that again! Do you know how selfish it would have been to leave me with these morons?"

Reyna just laughed. She knew her friend well enough to know she was just rattled.

Peeta was pale, Katniss was uncharacteristically quiet, Beetee was pacing, Johanna had her hands on her hips, and Finnick–

He was crying. Maybe he didn't know it, because his face didn't twist up. Or maybe he was one of those people who could cry in that sexy, non pug-face way. But the salty tears fell onto her cheeks were proof that Finnick Odair was very much human, and very much vulnerable under his pretty face. Something very few people knew, it seemed.

But Reyna Odai–Bowman, let's not get ahead of ourselves–knew. People who love each other just know like that.
