Chapter 14

"It's getting dark, we should get some sleep." Peeta advised after a little while, Reyna already resting in the hut.

"I'll take first watch." Volunteered Finnick, taking his trident in his hand.

Katniss looked at him with distrust. "Not a chance."

Their voices, slightly raised as they were, woke Reyna, and she slowly got out of the tent, using one of Finnick's extra tridents as something to lean on. She sighed as her partner stood up, looking–let's just call it unpleased.

"Honey, that thing I did back there for Peeta? That was called 'saving his life.' If I wanted to kill either of you, I would've done it by now." He said smoothly, without any trace of doubt.

Reyna put a placating hand on his arm after he walked away, causing him to look at her with concern. "You shouldn't be up, your burns aren't done healing yet."

"And you shouldn't be arguing with our only allies." She retorted.

"She started it."

Reyna narrowed her eyes playfully, walking away and then turning back, shaping her pointer and middle fingers to make a 'v', then motioning from her eyes to him. I'm watching you, Odair.

He shook his head with a grin but followed her anyway. If he was going to sleep at all, he would need his partner beside him.

Reyna had a problem. She was trying to climb over a fallen tree to get a good place to sleep, but her back just wouldn't allow it. She was about to give up when she was swept off her feet–literally.

"You could've just gone around it, ya know." He commented dryly, doing just that.

"I like to live life to the fullest, mister." She quipped back.

"Yes, of course. Because hopping over fallen logs is all life is about."

"No, there's other things, too."

"Oh?"

"Mhm. Like this." She said, bringing her lips up to meet his. Sparks flew behind them–wait, no, Peeta was just bored and throwing nuts at the force field.

Finnick's eyes widened and he stumbled, trying to catch her and himself simultaneously. Thus, she ended up caged in his arms against the wide trunk of a nearby tree, which had caught the both of them.

He pulled back with an almost bashful look and cleared his throat. His eyes were dark, the azure almost swallowed by the black of his pupils.

Reyna ducked her head shyly, making him give a smirk. "There certainly is that."

A silver parachute floated down near them. She and Finnick glanced at it, then back at each other. Reyna finally spoke, breathlessly, "We should probably get that, right?"

Inside was a small, silver jar, maybe five centimeters across. A note was attached in Adam's handwriting:

"Keep it up!" - A

They both blushed darkly, shy as children. Psh. Dorks.

Reyna had been taken back to the main camp and laid down on her stomach. Peeta zipped the back of her suit down while Katniss stood guard and Finnick held the jar. He put some of the salve (which was in the jar, and had a cool, sweet smell) on his fingers, spreading it on her back.

She sucked in a breath, relieved of the burden of pain. Her partner took this as a good sign and continued to spread the cream, saving some for later and leaving the jar with Katniss. They decided to leave her back exposed to the wind, to air out. Not that there was much wind anyway.

The cream had sunk into her burns, and already they were almost healed. The dead skin just had to fall off, and then she would be fine.

He drew her closer and pressed a kiss to the top of her head. She fit under his chin perfectly, so that's exactly where she went, nuzzling his chest. She could bend her back now, and move much more than she could earlier.

His steady, thrumming heart under her ear pulled her from consciousness, and she sank into sleep in less than a minute.

A while later, Finnick carefully moved her next to Peeta, so that he could talk with Katniss. He wasn't taking a single risk with Reyna, and Peeta could watch over her, for the most part.

When she was safe as she could be, he made his way over to Katniss, who was keeping watch. "How's Peeta?"

"He's fine, I think. Just tired. And Reyna?"

"She'll be fully recovered soon."

"You love her." It wasn't a question.

"I do."

"Then you had better keep her out of trouble, Odair."

"I will."

Everyone was woken by the tolls. One, two, three, they went. Four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve. They all shared a glance, every muscle tense.

"Peeta, zip up my suit, if you would." Reyna asked, turning her back to him.

"I counted twelve." Katniss said, her brow creasing.

"Midnight?" Finnick suggested.

"Or the number of Districts." Reyna said, her expression matching Katniss'. She looked at her female friend, realizing they had said the same thing at the same time.

Lightning flashed, hitting a tree in the distance.

"Well..." Finnick started with a sigh. "If you're not gonna sleep, I will."

"Okay." She replied, settling back against the tree with her bow in hand, an arrow nocked.

Finnick went over to Reyna, who had put her head down again after the lightning ended. She felt an arm around her waist and gentle breathing on her neck, and she knew that he had her back like she would have his. That he needed her to keep the nightmares away just as much as she needed him. And isn't that what partners are for?

"I think I love you, Fin." She mumbled sleepily, her eyes drooping.

"I think I love you, too, Reyna." He spoke into the nape of her neck, his voice rumbling in his chest. That, and the breathy brush of his lips on her skin sent chills down her spine.

It seemed like they only got a few seconds of rest before Katniss screamed.
