English 3
I immediately plunk my head down into the desk after I plop down into my seat. It had been such a long day and I was not mentally prepared for any sort of mind numbing busywork. I heave a sigh and enjoy a few moments of peace as other students start coming in. When the 5th period bell rang I groaned and forced myself to lift my heavy head and rested it on the edge of my palm like a kickstand. Mr. Michaelis walked in and stood at the front of the room as usual and wrote the time and date on the board.
"Good afternoon class. Since we have finished our Shakespeare unit and our poetry unit, I believe it's time I turn you all loose and give you freedom for this next unit. You will be doing a book report on any book of your choice and you can present your report in any way you'd like as long as it displays creativity and proves you read the book." He said. I sighed in relief. Thankfully I read books every night before I go to bed. I can probably do a report on one of those from my bedtime selection.
"That being said, please grab your book bags and your things because we are taking a trip to the library building. Once we all have our books, we'll have a reading class period for the rest of the hour. Understood?" He asks. We all nod.
"Alright, please grab your things now and walk respectfully to the library. I do not wish to hear any complaints from my fellow staff members about my students being disruptive or disrespectful in the halls." He says. With that everyone gets up and picks up their backpacks before filing out of the room and towards the west wing of the school.
I slip my backpack onto my shoulders and pop my earbuds back into my ears and play my show-tunes/Broadway musicals playlist on shuffle as I start making my way across the school behind everyone else. The first song that plays is Over at the Frankenstein Place from my favorite sci-fi musical Rocky Horror Picture Show.
I start humming along as I walk. I watch out the windows as I pass by and see the rain drizzling down. I sigh in contentment and continue on. We all walk out the west wing door and cross the pavement to the library building. As I walk I softly sing to myself.
"There's a liiiight (over at the Frankenstein place. There's a liiiiight (burning in the fireplace). There's a light in the darkness of everybody's liiife." I sing as we enter the library.
I turn down my volume as everyone files in. I look around at all the musty but charmingly aged books lining every wall and solo standing shelf. Immediately I eyed the fiction section. Without missing a beat, I scuttle over to it. I wander slowly as I carefully scour the shelves for the perfect pick. I look at the books and see a few familiar titles like Handmaids Tale, Six of Crows and Twilight. For a second I thought about Edward Cullen, he oddly reminded me of someone.
"Ah, I might've known I'd find you here with your head in the clouds." I heard. That was exactly who reminded me of Edward. Mr.Michaelis. I stifle a small laugh as I think about their similarities.
"Something amusing?" He asks. I force myself to mussel through without laughing. I turn to him.
"Nope, j-just looking! Why?" I ask. He nods.
"I see. Perhaps you could use a recommendation for your book choice?" He says as he turns to the shelf. He pulls out Good Omens by Niel Gaiman.
"How about this one? That Crawly character is one hell of a devil, if you'll excuse the pun." He says. I contemplate for a sec.
"Hmm, maybe...I prefer Coraline if we're talking Niel Gaiman. But, that's a bit too low of a reading level." I say. He looks a bit surprised.
"My, you do know your books. Perhaps you can recommend a novel to me instead." He says. I consider his offer.
"Okay. Hmm, let's see..." I say searching the fiction novels. Suddenly I spot the perfect one for him. I pull it and hold it out to him. He takes it and puts on his spectacles as he observes it.
"Lolita, hmm?" He says. I smirk pettily at him nodding.
"Yep. It's a real page turner. I think you might find the main character relatable Mr. Michaelis." I said as I turned back to the shelf. Was it a bit of a low blow? Yes. But it was payback for him being so possessive and creepy to me before. I find a couple books I'd like to read and choose from and pick them up.
"Hope you enjoy it." I say with a smile before turning on my heel and walking my books up to the checkout desk.
