Chapter One - The Move To The High Rise
Here I am sitting in the empty apartment after spending six years here making so many memories with boxes upon boxes stacked high ready to be put into the removal van. I've broken up with my boyfriend of six years after finding out that he cheated on me when he went on these so-called "business trips". It turns out he was going to another woman's house and they have been sleeping together.
"Hey at least you can start a new life in The High Rise and forget your past and live your present and future." My best friend of ten years Carley says the moment she sees me looking off into space.
"I know but I have also built a life here too. I've spent six years here. A everything in boxes just... I don't know." I say with a sigh glancing around at all of the boxes that hold everything I own.
"You need to let go of Jackson. He treated you terribly and I really want you to enjoy your life. You're thirty for Christ sake and you aren't getting any younger." She says which makes me chuckle looking at her.
"I guess you're right. How about we have a wine from a plastic cup because that's all that hasn't been packed?" I ask getting two plastic cups making Carley laugh. I pour the wine and we sit in the middle of the now empty living room then Carley insists on making a speech.
"This may not be the beginning but it will definitely be the end. From one crap hole to another. Also, hopefully to a fresh start." She says then we tap the cups together and start laughing at our childness.
A few hours later with everything moved onto the moving van Carley and I get into her porche to follow the van to The High Rise. I'm still nervous about moving into such a prestigious place but Carley has told me that people don't bother anyone on the twenty fifth floor where I will be living. Not only that but I will also be living next door to Carley.
We arrive and I look up with my breath catching in my throat at the sheer size and height. Carley taps my shoulder and I look at her to see she is smiling then the moving van men help to take the boxes and furniture up to the twenty fifth floor to my new apartment.
Once all of the boxes and furniture are inside the apartment I go into Carley's apartment and she makes us a drink. I look around at her apartment and smile because it's just so... her. She walks into the living room then gives me the drink and we sit on her sofa.
"So what do you think so far?" She asks and I smile again.
"Doesn't seem as bad as I first thought. It's a massive change but I'm sure I will eventually get used to living here." I say then she nods.
"I will come by tomorrow and help you finally unpack. Until then you can stay here just like we would while in college." She says which makes me chuckle.
"Sure thing. I will just pop next door and get some pajamas." I say. She gives me the "you can borrow some of mine." look which makes me laugh. I roll my eyes and we catch up after being apart for three months due to our work schedules being hectic because I'm a Primary School teacher whereas Carley is a well respected lawyer.
"So when will you be going back to teach the little darlings?" She asks while we have a glass of red wine.
"Probably in a few weeks. Trevor has said I can return at any time and also said the position is still open." I say which makes her eyes go wide.
"I think he may have a thing for you. I don't blame him either. You are beautiful." She says and I burst out laughing.
"Jeez Carls. After my breakup with Jackson I don't think I will be rushing into anything just yet. Is there any one I need to avoid while here?" I ask then she looks up shaking her head.
"Not anyone I have met so far. I heard that there is someone else who moved in today. That's about it. Don't know their name or anything about them." She says and I nod.
"Well, we have a busy day tomorrow so we better sleep." I say which makes her sigh and pout. I try not to laugh at her because she has always been like this but I'm really tired after such a hard day.
"Just one more drink." She says and I roll my eyes before nodding. She cheers and jumps up to pour the two of us another glass of wine.
"Have you got anyone special in your life yet Carls?" I ask then see her cheeks tint a little pink. I raise an eyebrow while she gives me the glass then sits next to me.
"Kind of. His name is Harry. He lives on the twenty nineth floor and he is a bad boy model. We haven't exactly been on a date but we have had sex a few times." She says while her cheeks go a deeper shade of pink and I giggle putting my hand on her knee.
"Well, he better not break your heart or I will make sure whoever he decides to fuck after you won't enjoy it. I will make sure his dick is ruined." I playfully threaten knowing Carley is the one who isn't afraid to tell a guy where to go. She laughs then throws back the rest of her wine before putting the glass on the table and her hand over mine.
"You know I can handle myself Becky. I'm worried about you. You fall too hard and too quickly the moment you start getting to know someone." She says and I can't argue with her because I know she is right.
"I won't be doing that again. I've definitely learnt my lesson after Jackson." I say. Carley raises her eyebrow at me and I roll my eyes.
"Whatever you say hun. Come on, let's go to sleep." She says hugginh me before getting me a blanket and I grab one of the cushions off the sofa.
