Chapter 9 | Maahishmati V
Days went by and Mani never showed up. Rudra got anxious day-by-day by his absence or maybe because she wanted to know everything about that training. She lacked sleep at night thinking about various things, at nights she heard various voices. Her Amma was also acting very different. She was sweet. Not that she didn't wanted her to be sweet or something but she couldn't digest the sudden sweetness, she would always ask about Amar which made Rudra happy yet doubtful. She would feel bad that she's suspicious of her mother but she can't help herself.
All she wanted was to be a part of their kingdom's beneficiaries, be it any war or calamity. She couldn't keep her dismay out of face the next morning.
"Rudra, its been days since you are losing to me in a run. Are you fine?" Amar noticed
"Yes, I'm fine. That can also mean that you got better"
"No, because I can feel you not putting any effort at all to win"
Rudra sat down with her head in hands, she didn't know why it affected her that much. It was not a big deal for any other girl in the community, why was she making a big scene out of it? She kept asking herself this all the time and failed to conjure up any answer.
"I... I want to be in Sena, I want to train" she choked up an answer
"So, why are you not in it already?"
She thought of an answer , no girl from there community was in the training, not one. It was wrong? Because no girl wanted to do this but she wanted to, would that mean she's rebellious or unethical? She wanted to voice out her queries to Amar but he was a boy and things were different for him, she thought how would he understand a girl's plea? Amar looked expectantly for answers but she refused to give any and she went.
At night
"I don't want to go there, do you remember what happened last time?"
"Yes, but you have to go" a female voice said crudely
"O-okay but you remember the deal, the money should reach my hut even if I don't"
"Hmm"
She didn't wanted to do this, his reply made her think that this all was in vain but she can't go back. Either she brings the evidence back or there's...no going back!
Like others mentioned there was heavy breathing sound and deranged footsteps but she had to bring at least one evidence that it's a human. She dropped some food at ground, some fresh twigs but there was no movement. Then she took out raw meat which was still red and then she threw it.
What she saw next was a dreadful sight , she had never seen something this much horrible. She saw a man with very long hair walking with the help of legs and hands. He took the meat and ate it with some difficulty but didn't flinch a bit which made her nauseous. She took a step back, kept throwing some meat and walked back. He kept following but then he turned around to face her and she stopped dead on her tracks! His face was decaying, his body skinless and hair all over his chest. She fainted...
Sivadurga was pacing back and forth. Another death! How can it happen so consequently? The way her body was splattered, without limbs and eyeballs. I couldn't see it! She had been in worry since the news came out of another death. Drushtya had gone with Kunwar Meghwal to encapsulate the sea range and docks. Now she is the one to address the crowd that is gathered outside. She told them to calm down, she's going to make the security even stronger for everyone.
It was night, after addressing hundreds of people and making better amendments she was headed towards her room when she saw Amar sleeping in her room.
"Amar, did you eat before you are sleeping?"
"No, I'm not hungry"
"Without eating anything I won't let you sleep"
"I said I'm not hungry!"
"What happened?"
"I don't know, tell me about me about their training. I want to know everything"
"Why?"
"I um, why can't girls be in the sena?"
"They can be but there are none who want to join"
"No!"
He continued "No maa, Rudra is going crazy to join it. Can she? Will you ask Kunwar Meghwal?"
"Okay, Amar you don't want to join?"
He changed the topic, he ate and then slept. Maa, you don't even need to ask. Where she will be, I'll be there too. That's what friends do.
Next day, Sivadurga talked to Raksha Dal and they weren't pleased at her plea. They did not wanted to train a girl.
"I order you to take her to practice"
"Rajmata, if it were some other time I'd have laughed on it but now these are serious issues please don't toy with us"
"It's my orders!" She roared
They were shaken with her sudden uproar and nodded hastily but they wouldn't let it be easy for her.
