He's been doing it for over a thousand years. The supposed impossible task of reaping souls. He's seen people die and live, breathe and collapse. It's a set of unfortunate circumstances that have left himself both irritated and completely bored with the cards that have been dealt to him. And those cards he has to play are ones that he also has to get rid of.

Unfortunately, being among the reapers, and the supposed best, it is not something he takes the greatest deal of pride in.

Reaping souls has been his life's mission for as far back as he can remember. The list engraved into his mind felt endless at times. But that doesn't matter, because the only thing Adrian St. Cloud is remotely concerned about is completing it —because once he does he gets to go home, he gets to be finished with the game. He gets to get reaped.

Maybe he's grown harsh, unsympathetic, and that's why his superiors decide it's going to go differently this time. He won't be allowed to rush the process, risk the chances of a spirit turning poltergeist, an angry rumbling spirit that could endanger the lives of humans and witches.

Him being forced to attend Hogwarts feels like some sort of joke, but they swear it's going to make him more understanding to the destruction he causes the souls he reaps. It's not fair, he thinks idly. He's almost done with his list. Why couldn't they just let him be? But of course Death was never fair.

Having affairs with mortals isn't against the rules. Due to their extensive lives, they actually encouraged it. But Adrian had never been remotely interested in the possibility of a companion. He just wants to be finished, he just wants to go home. But Victor Krum is not some arbitrary happenstance, he is there, and Adrian just might find a little piece of home in him.
