Chapter 9
We all pile into the elevator, and ride it up to the intensive care unit. "Fallon, Alex, I think you two should go first," Alan decides. Fallon and I enter the room Chad is in.
He lays there, hooked up to all these machines, looking lifeless. His eyes are open, but I don't see the spark that's usually there.
Fallon rushes to his side. I kinda stay back, this is too much. I have to get out of here, I run out if the room, and into Alan's arms. "This is too much," I sob. "Sssh, Alex, he'll pull through, Chad's a fighter." He strokes my hair. "I don't wanna lose him," I whisper. "You won't," Alan replies. We stay like this for a while. When Fallon comes out, Alan wipes away my tears and lets me go.
"He's not allowed to come home for a while," she says, softly crying. Kelsey rushes over to comfort her, and Alan and Joey slip into the room.
I walk over to Caleb, and sit next to him. "Hey," I say. He turns to me, "Alex, you okay?" I shake my head, "No, I've already lost my parents, I can't lose him too." Caleb puts his arm around me, "Is that what you're worried about?" I nod, "Chad saved me. Without him, I'd still be with that lame excuse of a boyfriend."
"God has this all in control, just trust him," he says. I smile, thinking about what Chad told me. If God loves me enough, that his only son would die for me, I should love him too.
Alan and Joey come out, so Caleb and Kelsey go in.
"No matter how much he picks on me, I don't know what I'd do without him," Joey mumbles. Alan smiles, "You two are adorable!" Joey smirks, and playfully punches him. "Don't hate the truth," Alan replies.
Joey walks over and sits next to me. "What up, girl?" He asks, trying to cheer me up. I grin, "What up boy?" Joey smirks, "I asked you first!" He reaches over and begins tickling me, I shriek moving away from him. "Kids, calm down," Alan says. "He started it!" I point to Joey, with a smirk. Alan points to two chairs, and we sit in the like little kids in time-out.
Once Caleb and Kelsey come out, we regroup. "What should we do now?" Joey asks. "I wanna stay with Chad," I whisper. "Alex, are you sure?" Caleb asks. I nod, "I promise I'll call you guys if something happens." Fallon's eyes look worried, "Promise? You can't run away, okay?"
"I promise." Alan nods, "If it's what you want." I hug each of them before they leave. "Love you," I tell them. "We love you too, girl," Joey says hugging me. "Be careful, hun," Kelsey says. I smile, "I will."
I wave to them as they all leave the hospital. I walk back into Chad's room, he's conscious, but still under anesthesia.
I talk to a few nurses, "I'm staying the night with him." They smile, "Is he your dad?" One of them asks. Normally, I would shake my head, but this time I nod, "Yes, I love him so much." They point to a chair, right next to his bed. I take his hand in mine, and squeeze it. He unconsciously squeezes back.
"I love you, dad," I whisper, fighting back my tears. The nurses head to leave, "Let me know if you need anything, honey," one of them quickly says. I nod, pulling out my ringing phone.
Alan's name flashes, I answer it, still holding Chad's hand. "Hello?" I smile. "Alex, are you doing okay?" Alan asks, concern flooding his voice.
"Yeah, I'll be fine. You guys are coming back in the morning, right?" I ask. "Yeah, kid, we'll be there, quite possibly the first thing you'll see," he laughs. I laugh too, "Okay, we'll see you then!" Alan clears his throat, "Yeah see ya then, beautiful. Love you." The line goes dead.
I love him, and everybody else. I just can't believe Chad is here. Something keeps telling me it's my fault. I rest my head on my shoulder and drift off to sleep.
I'm awoken by my phone ringing, it's 3AM who could possibly be?
"Hello?" I croak. "Alex! This is Joey! They figured out who hurt Chad," he says, out of breath. "Who?" I ask, curiously. "Logan Ammons."
I begin crying, "No, no! Joey, are you sure?" I ask through the tears. "Yeah, sorry kiddo," he says. My brother hurt Chad. Chad was right, I should've listened, if I had we wouldn't be in this mess.
I lean over Chad, "I'm sorry, Chad," I whisper. "Alex, are you okay? Who's this Logan?" Joey asks. "No, and Logan is my brother. Chad and I got into a fight after he called. Why didn't I listen to Chad? I'm so stupid! If it wasn't for me Chad would be at home right now!"
"Sssssh, darling, shhhhh," Joey whispers, "Stop blaming yourself! Chad wouldn't want that! I'm coming to that hospital!" He says, as the line goes dead.
I grab Chad's hand, "I'm so sorry, Chad, it's all my fault! I love you so much!" I frantically whisper.
Susan, the nurse, comes in, "What's wrong, dear?" She asks. "I'm fine, Susan, I am," I wipe away my tears. "Okay. Your dad is gonna be just fine. He should wake up in about three hours. Then, we'll run some tests, and if they're okay, you can take him home."
I smile, "Thanks, Sue." She waves as she leaves. I hold Chad's hand and cry softly. I love him so much, I don't know why this happened.
