Twenty: Elizabeth

"No, that wouldn't work either..." Eliza moans. Why must the Host make things so difficult?

"You use it for light, could that have something to do with it?" Zach leans over the table on the opposite side of Eliza.

"Light...and heat. Which means fire, light bulbs—"

"Light bulbs?" Zach raises an eyebrow.

Eliza rolls her eyes, leaning closer to the candle between them. "They produce heat too, you know. Ever leave a lamp on and feel the bulb?"

Zach chuckles which makes Eliza smile. "You always notice the things I don't," he says. "I both love it and hate it."

"Yes, well, not every man can be as smart as women are. Especially this one," Elizabeth points to herself with a teasing grin on her face.

"Please..." Zach stops for a moment, and Eliza can almost see the gears turning in his head. "Do you know what else produces light and heat?" He gives her a wide smile and looks up to where the sky is, which is beginning to get lighter as the sun starts to rise.

"Stars! Elsher, you're a genius!" She walks around the table and gives him a peck on the cheek.

Stop it, she scolds herself. You don't love him. You can't love him. But I want to...No! Snap out of it!

Going with the flow, Eliza brushes it aside and scans the room. This is an observatory, so obviously there must be some maps of the stars, right? Her eyes fall on Zach and she feels her cheeks start to heat up. Why are they doing that?

She is a grown woman and past all of that lovey-dovey stuff.

If only that is true; how much easier her life would be without the complications of feelings and relationships.

When he meets her gaze, she immediately looks away, embarrassed to be caught staring.

"Maybe there are some constellation maps over here..." She hurries to the shelf on the far wall attempting to hide the pink that dusts her cheeks.

Eliza doesn't hear his footsteps, but she feels Zach's presence behind her. An arm appears out of the corner of her eye and reaches for a scroll on the shelf, causing Elizebeth to nearly jump.

"Sorry," Zach murmurs. "Didn't think I'd startle you."

"You silently walked over here, and you know that I don't like it when you use your stealth on me." Eliza purposely avoids his gaze, instead continuing to search through dozens of scrolls on the large dark oak bookshelf.

"You're pretty smart, you know that?" He moves to stand right beside her, thumbing through the scrolls.

Although Eliza is sure that he's not paying attention to them.

"You are the one that figured this one out, so..."

Elizabeth ignores the comment and pulls one of the papers off of the shelf. She unrolls it and lays it flat on the table before taking a step back to look at it.

"It's definitely a constellation map," Eliza says. "Find any more?"

"Wait...yes. Here." Zach hands her a larger scroll and she motions for him to stand next to him.

They are going to be stuck together for a while, it seems, so might as well let the past go and deal with it.

She can't hide from her true feelings forever.

He helps her unroll the thing and Eliza grabs some books to hold down the curling edges. She turns her head to the side.

What the...

"Huh. They're the same." Zach crosses his arms, taking a step back.

No, that can't be right. The Host is full of puzzles. Why would they give the Players two of the same map?

There's got to be more to the parchments.

Channeling memories from the times she had to play Spot the Difference with Izzy, Elizabeth looks over the two maps. Her eyes scan every single dot, every coordinate, double checking the whole map before looking it over again.

There is nothing.

"See any differences?" she asks her partner, who simply shakes his head in reply.

"There's not a thing I can see that's different." Zach sighs. "Maybe we should look for another map?"

"No, I'm certain the answer is here." Eliza studies each map more closely. "It's got to be."

She sees him give her a look, but says nothing.

Heat and light.

Those have to be the key.

But where do they fit in the puzzle?

"Grab the map!" She hurries over to the lamp that sits in the corner.

"Which one?" Zach asks.

Is he dumb?

"The smaller one!" Eliza quickly removes the lampshade and snatches the map out of Zach's hands as soon as it's in reach.

She holds it over top of the lightbulb and carefully moves it bit by bit, trying not to catch it on fire.

About halfway across the map, Eliza stops.

"Bingo."

"Do I want to know what you're talking about?"

Eliza rolls her eyes. After all the time he's spent with her and Izzy!

"Secret messages. Invisible ink that is revealed with light and heat. You helped me do this with Isabelle, idiot."

"I know. I'm wondering what you found." She feels him looking over her shoulder.

"You're breathing on my neck, Zachary," she warns.

Zach groans. "Will you please not call me that?" He takes a step back nonetheless.

Eliza squints at the small handwriting that has now appeared on the parchment. She struggles to read what the message is. Are those numbers or letters?

After a moment of blissful silence, Zach asks, "What's it say?"

Elizabeth tries to decipher it, but fails. She reluctantly shows it to Zachary. "Good luck trying to figure it out."
It takes him a moment before he responds. Eliza can't help but stare as the light of the candle lights up his eyes.

"I can't make it all out, but I think it's something along the lines of 'Playing games with...heart...not...a sign...strength...sign...weakness.'" Eliza wonders how Zach was able to figure that out from the messy handwriting.

"So it's about playing with someone's heart? Why is the message here then?"

"I don't know." Zach waits a moment before speaking again, "This Host...they know more than they should. I don't know what that message means, but I know it's meant for one of us—the Players."

"But a message for who? It's not for me, and I'm guessing it's not for you." It seems that every answer Eliza gets leaves her with ten more questions.

"I wish I knew. I have my suspicions, but none are concrete."

"We should continue looking. We may have found something, but it wasn't another clue. There has to be something else!' Eliza starts searching the room again for any clues. She starts over by the desk that rests next to the door, working her way around the room. Zach joins her, starting at the other side. Eventually, they find themselves staring each other in the face.

"Find anything?" Zach asks Eliza, looking at her hopefully.

"No, nothing. What are we missing? We've searched the whole room."

"Well, there is one place we haven't checked." Zach gestures towards the open dome.

"It's worth a shot." Eliza doesn't know what else it could be. Sure, they found the constellation. But that didn't tell them anything about where to go next.

Zach interlocks his fingers, making a kind of step for Eliza. Setting a foot down, Eliza looks pointedly at him.

"I swear if you drop me, Zachary—"

"I won't drop you, Liz."

Eliza looks at Zach and, with a small huff of annoyance, lets him help her up towards the roof. She grabs onto the edge of the hole and pulls herself up.

"You alright?" She hears Zach voice call.

"Yeah." Eliza pokes her head over the edge to look at him, "Do you want a hand?"

When he pushes a chair over, she leans over the edge. He takes her outstretched hand and Eliza starts to pull him up. She may not look strong, but if anyone thinks otherwise, they have another thing coming.

Zach grabs onto the edge and pulls himself up the rest of the way, still not letting go of Eliza's hand.

"Thanks." He mutters, moving to sit next to her.

"No problem." They sit there for a while, enjoying the other's presence. Of course, they aren't doing completely nothing. Both are trying to find some sort of clue as to where they need to go next.

"Wait. I think I've seen that before." Zach brings Eliza's mind back to the present.

"You've seen what before?"

"That constellation." Zach nods towards the sky, opening the map. Pencil marks cover the paper in a pattern that seems deliberate. "I marked down the hidden constellation on the map, so we could look at it without catching the map on fire."

When Zach holds the paper up to the sky, Eliza realizes what he was saying. The constellation on the map perfectly matches the one in front of them.

"How could I have missed it!" Zach gets to his feet, rolling up the map. At Eliza's questioning look, he continues, "It was in the drawing room, in one of the paintings."

How could she have missed that? It seems so obvious now that it's been put out into the open. Eliza vaguely remembers seeing it, but she ignored it. She wonders how she could have been so stupid as to—

Zach puts a hand on her arm, dragging her from her thoughts.

"It's not your fault. I missed it too." It still infuriates Eliza how he can know exactly what she is thinking. One time when she asked him how he did it, he only grinned in response.

Zach carefully grabs onto the edge before letting himself down into the room again. Once he is safely on the ground, Eliza moves towards the hole. She grabs onto the side and gently lets herself down into the hole. She didn't expect it to be slippery, though. Her hand slides off the edge and, before she knows it, Eliza is falling to the floor. Before her head hits the ground, Zach catches her.

"I think you just fell for me." He has a small grin on his face, and Eliza has to resist the urge to punch it off.

"Zachary." Eliza glares at him. Taking a not-so-subtle hint, Zach lets her back down.

"So, to the drawing room?" Zach asks.

"Yes, to the parlor."

With that, they walk out the room and down the two flights of stairs. Eliza and Zach take their time. They pass many doors, but none are open. The chandeliers seem to bring more light than they have before. The halls are filled with so much light that it almost hurts Eliza's eyes.

Zach holds the rolled up parchment that contains the hidden constellation. They walk down the two flights of steps, taking care to examine the walls for anything new.

They appear in front of the parlor. Zach opens the door and holds it open for Eliza. She looks at the walls, exactly like she did the other times. Her eyes stop on a painting that is different from before. The painting of a calm forest—the one that has Zuri Nguyen engraved on the bottom—now has something extra.

It has a portrait of Zuri in the middle and a date at the bottom.

"Oh my God," two voices say in unison.
